A detailed study of 45 joint samples using four statistical measures across 500 different ΔI_(L)values identified a clear line interval effect with two stages: stable and fluctuation-discrete.Further statistical analysis showed a linear relationship between the error bounds of four parameters, shear strength evaluation, and their corresponding maximum ΔI_(L)values, where the gradient k of this linear relationship was influenced by the basic friction angle and normal stress. Accounting for these factors,lower-limit linear models were employed to determine the optimal ΔI_(L)values that met error tolerances(1%–10%) for all metrics and shear strength. The study also explored the consistent size effect on joints regardless of ΔI_(L)changes, revealing three types of size effects based on morphological heterogeneity.Notably, larger joints required generally higher ΔI_(L)to maintain the predefined error limits, suggesting an increased interval for large joint analyses. Consequently, this research provides a basis for determining the optimal ΔI_(L), improving accuracy in 2D profile line assessments of joint characteristics.展开更多

The present in vitro study was designed to assess the impact of various dietary components on the performance of orthodontic brackets. Methods: Metal orthodontic brackets were bonded to 66 extracted anterior teeth divided into groups based on the solution type: Milk, Gatorade, Cold Coffee, and a control group using water. Each group consisted of 20 teeth except for the control group, which included six teeth. The bracketed teeth were submerged in their respective solutions for 15 minutes three times daily at different intervals to mimic an in vivo environment and were stored in artificial saliva at room temperature (23?C). The specimens underwent artificial aging through 10,000 cycles of thermocycling (representing one clinical year) between 5?C and 55?C. Shade measurements were taken using a VITA Easy Shade device, capturing the classic shade and L*, a*, and b* values. Delta E values were calculated immediately post-bonding and after 7 days, 1 month, 1, and 2 clinical years. The shear bond strength of each bracket was measured using an ultra-tester machine. Results: After two clinical years, significant differences in ΔE color values were observed across all groups, with the most substantial change noted in teeth immersed in cold coffee. Brackets submerged in milk demonstrated lower shear bond strength than other solutions, whereas the control group exhibited the highest shear bond strength (P = 0.01). Conclusion: The study indicates that dietary components significantly influence tooth color stability and the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets, underscoring the importance of considering these factors in orthodontic treatment planning.展开更多

A hollow cylinder torsional shear apparatus was utilized to conduct tests on remolded samples under both normal and frozen conditions to investigate the mechanical properties and deformation behavior of loess under complex stress conditions. The results indicate significant differences in the internal changes of soil particles, unfrozen water, and relative positions in soil samples under normal and frozen conditions, leading to noticeable variations in strength and strain development. In frozen state, loess experiences primarily compressive failure with a slow growth of cracks, while at normal temperature, it predominantly exhibits shear failure. With the increase in the principal stress angle, the deformation patterns of the soil samples under different conditions become essentially consistent, gradually transitioning from compression to extension, accompanied by a reduction in axial strength. The gradual increase in the principal stress axis angle(α) reduces the strength of the generalized shear stress and shear strain curves.Under an increasing α, frozen soil exhibits strain-hardening characteristics, with the maximum shear strength occurring at α = 45°. The intermediate principal stress coefficient(b) also significantly impacts the strength of frozen soil, with an increasing b resulting in a gradual decrease in generalized shear stress strength. This study provides a reference for comprehensively exploring the mechanical properties of soil under traffic load and a reliable theoretical basis for the design and maintenance of roadbeds.展开更多

The interfacial microstructure and shear strength of the joints were studied. According to the experimental observations, the molten interlayer reacts vigorously with base metals, forming several continuous reaction layers. The typical interfacial microstructure of the joint can be expressed as GH99/(Ni,Cr)ss(γ)/TiNi(β2)+TiNi2Al(τ4)+Ti2Ni(δ)/δ+Ti3Al(α2)+Al3NiTi2(τ3)/α2+τ3/TiAl. The maximum shear strength is 258 MPa for the specimen brazed at 1000°C for 10 min. Higher brazing temperature or longer brazing time causes coarsening of the phases in the brazing seam and formation of brittle intermetallic layer, which greatly depresses the shear strength of the joints.展开更多

The results show that the average size of voids decreases while the amount of voids decreases after increasing to the maximum value with the increasing bonding time. The irregular void with a scraggly edge tends to an ellipse void with smooth surface and then changes to a tiny void with round shape. The grains across bonding interface occur at bonding time of 60 min. The shear strength of bond increases with increasing bonding time, and the highest shear strength of bond is 887.4 MPa at 60 min. The contribution of plastic deformation on the void closure and the increase of shear strength is significant even though the action time of plastic deformation is short.展开更多

Taking the values of Su from laboratory tests as references, several existing Su-predicted methods based on CPTu are compared and evaluated. To verify the presented cone factor Nk, additional test sites are selected and examined. The results show that the values of cone factors such as Nkt, Nke, and Nau, depend on the shear test mode and disturbance. Generally, the values of Nke show more scattering than those of Nkt and N△u. For the stratified and layered sediments of the Yangtze River floodplain, it is recommended using the net cone resistance qT to estimate Su and the preliminary cone factor values Nkt are from 7 to 16, with an average of 11. It is also confirmed that the CPTu test, as a new technique in site characterization, can present reasonable parameters for bridge foundations.展开更多

Kinematical element method was adopted to determine factor of safety and critical failure surface, which overcomes the disadvantage of limit equilibrium method. The theoretical relationship between the combination of shear strength parameters and stability state was studied. The results show that the location of critical slip surface, F/tan f and F/c depend only on the value of c/tan f. The failure surface moves towards the inside of slope as c/tan f increases. According to the information involving factor of safety and critical failure surface in a specific cross-section, strength parameters can be back calculated based on the above findings. Three examples were given for demonstrating the validity of the present method. The shear strength parameters obtained by back analysis are almost consistent with their correct solutions or test results.展开更多

文摘The influence of Mo and ZrO_(2)nanoparticles addition on the interfacial properties and shear strength of Sn58Bi solder joint was investigated. The interfacial microstructures of Sn58Bi/Cu,Sn58Bi+Mo/Cu and Sn58Bi+ZrO_(2)/Cu solder joints were analysed using a scanning electron microscope(SEM)coupled with energy dispersive X-ray(EDX)and the X-ray diffraction(XRD).Intermetallic compounds(IMCs)of MoSn_(2)are detected in the Sn58Bi+Mo/Cu solder joint, while SnZr,Zr_(5)Sn_(3),ZrCu and ZrSn_(2)are detected in Sn58Bi+ZrO_(2)/Cu solder joint.IMC layers for both composite solders comprise of Cu_(6)Sn_(5) and Cu_(3)Sn.The SEM images of these layers were used to measure the IMC layer’s thickness. The average IMC layer’s thickness is 1.4431μm for Sn58Bi+Mo/Cu and 0.9112μm for Sn58Bi+ZrO_(2)/Cu solder joints.Shear strength of the solder joints was investigated via the single shear lap test method. The average maximum load and shear stress of the Sn58Bi+Mo/Cu and Sn58Bi+ZrO_(2)/Cu solder joints are increased by 33%and 69%,respectively,as compared to those of the Sn58Bi/Cu solder joint.By comparing both composite solder joints, the latter prevails better as adding smaller sized ZrO_(2)nanoparticles improves the interfacial properties granting a stronger solder joint.
文摘This study aims to predict the undrained shear strength of remolded soil samples using non-linear regression analyses, fuzzy logic, and artificial neural network modeling.A total of 1306 undrained shear strength results from 230 different remolded soil test settings reported in 21 publications were collected, utilizing six different measurement devices.Although water content, plastic limit, and liquid limit were used as input parameters for fuzzy logic and artificial neural network modeling, liquidity index or water content ratio was considered as an input parameter for non-linear regression analyses. In non-linear regression analyses,12 different regression equations were derived for the prediction of undrained shear strength of remolded soil.Feed-Forward backpropagation and the TANSIG transfer function were used for artificial neural network modeling, while the Mamdani inference system was preferred with trapezoidal and triangular membership functions for fuzzy logic modeling. The experimental results of 914 tests were used for training of the artificial neural network models,196 for validation and 196 for testing. It was observed that the accuracy of the artificial neural network and fuzzy logic modeling was higher than that of the non-linear regression analyses.Furthermore,a simple and reliable regression equation was proposed for assessments of undrained shear strength values with higher coefficients of determination.

文摘2D profile lines play a critical role in cost-effectively evaluating rock joint properties and shear strength. However, the interval(ΔI_(L)) between these lines significantly impacts roughness and shear strength assessments. Consequently, this research provides a basis for determining the optimal ΔI_(L), improving accuracy in 2D profile line assessments of joint characteristics.

文摘The shear strength deterioration of bedding planes between different rock types induced by cyclic loading is vital to reasonably evaluate the stability of soft and hard interbedded bedding rock slopes under earthquake;however, rare work has been devoted to this subject due to lack of attention. In this study, experimental investigations on shear strength weakening of discontinuities with different joint wall material(DDJM)under cyclic loading were conducted by taking the interface between siltstone and mudstone in the Shaba slope of Yunnan Province,China as research objects.A total of 99 pairs of similar material samples of DDJM(81 pairs)and discontinuities with identical joint wall material(DIJM)(18 pairs)were fabricated by inserting plates, engraved with typical surface morphology obtained by performing three-dimensional laser scanning on natural DDJMs sampled from field, into mold boxes.Cyclic shear tests were conducted on these samples to study their shear strength changes with the cyclic number considering the effects of normal stress, joint surface morphology, shear displacement amplitude and shear rate. The results indicate that the shear stress vs.shear displacement curves under each shear cycle and the peak shear strength vs.cyclic number curves of the studied DDJMs are between those of DIJMs with siltstone and mudstone, while closer to those of DIJMs with mudstone. The peak shear strengths of DDJMs exhibit an initial rapid decline followed by a gradual decrease with the cyclic number and the decrease rate varies from 6%to 55.9%for samples with varied surface morphology under different testing conditions. The normal stress, joint surface morphology, shear displacement amplitude and shear rate collectively influence the shear strength deterioration of DDJM under cyclic shear loading, with the degree of influence being greater for larger normal stress, rougher surface morphology, larger shear displacement amplitude and faster shear rate.

文摘Extraction of methane hydrate from subseafloor reservoir may potentially trigger seabed slides and induce subsidence. To address the problems,it is crucial to properly characterize the phase equilibrium condition of pore hydrate and the shear strength of the soil.As one of the key constitutive components, the phase equilibrium condition enforces a constraint over pore gas pressure, temperature and unhydrated water content.Such a constraint, however, has been traditionally ignored in analyzing the mechanical behavior of hydrate-bearing soil.In this paper,a series of stepwise hydrate dissociation tests was performed, and the phase equilibrium condition of pore hydrate was determined, providing an effective way to evaluate the unhydrated water content during hydrate dissociation.Meanwhile,a series of direct shear tests was also conducted to explore the shear strength characteristics of the soil.It is shown that the shear strength of the hydrate-bearing soil can be significantly influenced by pore gas pressure, unhydrated water content, hydrate saturation and several other factors. In particular, the measured shear strength depends upon the initial water content of the sample, pointing to a potential problem that the shear strength could be wrongly determined if not properly interpreted.A shear strength criterion, which enforces the equilibrium condition of pore hydrate,is developed for hydrate-bearing soil, establishing a link between the equilibrium condition and the shear strength. The proposed equation describes well the shear strength characteristics of hydrate-bearing soils, remarkably unifying the effects of pore pressure, temperature, water content and hydrate saturation.

文摘The characteristics of residual soils are very different from those of sedimentary soils.Although the strength characteristics of sedimentary soils have been studied extensively, the shear strength characteristics of granitic residual soils(GRS)subjected to the weathering of parent rocks have rarely been investigated. In this study, the shear strength characteristics of GRS in the Taishan area of southeast China(TSGRS)were studied by field and laboratory tests. The field tests consisted of a cone penetration test(CPT),borehole shear test(BST),self-boring pressuremeter test(SBPT),and seismic dilatometer Marchetti test(SDMT).The shortcomings of laboratory testing are obvious, with potential disturbances arising through the sampling, transportation, and preparation of soil samples.Due to the special structure of GRS samples and the ease of disturbance, the results obtained from laboratory tests were generally lower than those obtained from situ tests. The CPT and scanning electron microscopy(SEM)results indicated significant weathering and crustal hardening in the shallow TSGRS.This resulted in significant differences in the strength and strength parameters of shallow soil obtained by the BST.Based on the SDMT and SBPT results,a comprehensive evaluation method of shear strength for TSGRS was proposed. The SBPT was suitable for evaluating the strength of shallow GRS.The material index(ID)and horizontal stress index(KD)values obtained by the SDMT satisfied the empirical relationship proposed by Marchetti based on the ID index, and were therefore considered suitable for the evaluation of the shear strength of deep GRS.

文摘Triaxial compression tests were conducted on the alfalfa root-loess complex at different growthperiods obtained through artificial planting. The research focused on analyzing the time variation law of the shear strength index and deformation index of the alfalfa root-loess complex under dry-wet cycles.Additionally, the time effect of the shear strength index of the alfalfa root-loess complex under dry-wet cycles was analyzed and its prediction model was proposed. The results show that the PG-DWC(dry-wet cycle caused by plant water management during plant growth period)causes the peak strength of plain soil to change in a"V"shape with the increase of growth period, and the peak strength of alfalfa root-loess complex is higher than that of plain soil at the same growth period. The deterioration of the peak strength of alfalfa root-loess complex in the same growth period is aggravated with the increase of drying and wetting cycles.Compared with the 0 days growth period, the effective cohesion of alfalfa root-loess complex under different dry-wet cycles maximum increase rate is at the 180 days, which are 33.88%,46.05%,30.12%and 216.02%,respectively.When the number of dry-wet cycles is constant, the effective cohesion of the alfalfa root-loess complex overall increases with the growth period. However,it gradually decreases comparedwith the previous growth period, and the minimum increase rate are all at the 180 days. For the same growth period, the effective cohesion of the alfalfa root-loess complex decreases with the increase of the number of dry-wet cycles. This indicates that EC-DWC(the dry-wet cycles caused by extreme natural conditions such as continuous rain)have a detrimental effect on the time effect of the shear strength of the alfalfa root-loess complex. Finally, based on the formula of total deterioration,a prediction model for the shear strength of the alfalfa root-loess complex under dry-wet cycles was proposed, which exhibits high prediction accuracy. The research results provide useful guidance for the understanding of mechanical behavior and structural damage evolution of root-soil composite.
文摘The Editor in Chief has retracted this article. After publication, concerns were raised over potentially inconsistent data-for example, the author mentioned residual soil with silt fraction, but Fig.5 shows even the smallest grains are beyond silt grains.Further analysis showed that Fig.6 and Fig.9 show both loose and dense soils exhibiting very similar dilatance behaviour, which is not typical. The author shared raw data, but it was incomplete and could not be verified. The Editor in Chief, therefore, has lost confidence in the findings of this article. The author does not agree to this retraction.
文摘Introduction: The stability of orthodontic brackets throughout orthodontic treatment plays a critical role in the treatment’s effectiveness. Conclusion: The study indicates that dietary components significantly influence tooth color stability and the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets, underscoring the importance of considering these factors in orthodontic treatment planning.

文摘Serious riverbank erosion, caused by scouring and soil siltation on the bank slope in the lower reaches of the Tarim River,Northwest China urgently requires a solution.Plant roots play an important role in enhancing soil shear strength on the slopes to maintain slope soils, but the extent of enhancement of soil shear strength by different root distribution patterns is unclear. The study used a combination of indoor experiments and numerical simulation to investigate the effects of varying plant root morphologies on the shear strength of the sandy soil in the Tarim River. The results showed that:(1)by counting the root morphology of dominant vegetation on the bank slope,we summarized the root morphology of dominant vegetation along the coast as vertical, horizontal, and claw type;(2)the shear strength of root-soil composites(RSCs)was significantly higher than that of remolded soil, and the presence of root system made the strain-softening of soil body significantly weakened so that RSCs had better mechanical properties;and(3)compared with the lateral roots, the average particle contact degree of vertical root system was higher, and the transition zone of shear strength was more prominent.Hence, vegetation with vertical root system had the best effect on soil protection and slope fixation. The results of this study have important guiding significance for prevention and control of soil erosion in the Tarim River basin, the restoration of riparian ecosystems, and the planning of water conservancy projects.

文摘This paper aims to comprehensively analyze the influence of the principal stress angle rotation and intermediate principal stress on loess's strength and deformation characteristics. This study provides a reference for comprehensively exploring the mechanical properties of soil under traffic load and a reliable theoretical basis for the design and maintenance of roadbeds.

文摘Reactive brazing of TiAl-based intermetallics and Ni-based alloy with Ti foil as interlayer was investigated. Higher brazing temperature or longer brazing time causes coarsening of the phases in the brazing seam and formation of brittle intermetallic layer, which greatly depresses the shear strength of the joints.

文摘The bonding interface characteristic and shear strength of diffusion bonded Ti-17 titanium alloy at different bonding time were investigated. The contribution of plastic deformation on the void closure and the increase of shear strength is significant even though the action time of plastic deformation is short.

文摘In order to obtain the reasonable undrained shear strength Su for geotechnical analyses of bridge foundations in Yangtze River floodplain clayey soils, a site-specific study is conducted using the imported piezocone penetration test (CPTu) with dissipation phases at the Fourth Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge construction sites. It is also confirmed that the CPTu test, as a new technique in site characterization, can present reasonable parameters for bridge foundations.

文摘A rigorous back analysis of shear strength parameters of landslide slip was presented. The shear strength parameters obtained by back analysis are almost consistent with their correct solutions or test results.

文摘Accurate assessment of undrained shear strength(USS)for soft sensitive clays is a great concern in geotechnical engineering practice. This study applies novel data-driven extreme gradient boosting(XGBoost)and random forest(RF)ensemble learning methods for capturing the relationships between the USS and various basic soil parameters.Based on the soil data sets from TC304 database,a general approach is developed to predict the USS of soft clays using the two machine learning methods above, where five feature variables including the preconsolidation stress(PS),vertical effective stress(VES),liquid limit(LL),plastic limit(PL)and natural water content(W)are adopted. To reduce the dependence on the rule of thumb and inefficient brute-force search, the Bayesian optimization method is applied to determine the appropriate model hyper-parameters of both XGBoost and RF.The developed models are comprehensively compared with three comparison machine learning methods and two transformation models with respect to predictive accuracy and robustness under 5-fold cross-validation(CV).It is shown that XGBoost-based and RF-based methods outperform these approaches.Besides, the XGBoostbased model provides feature importance ranks, which makes it a promising tool in the prediction of geotechnical parameters and enhances the interpretability of model.

文摘In order to improve our knowledge of the mechanical effect of the roots of mixed-plantings on soil reinforcement and slope protection, the influence of roots of a mixed-planting with four herb species(Medicago sativa L.,Elymus nutans Griseb.,Puccinellia distanx(L.),and Poa pratensis L.)and one shrub species(Caragana korshinskii Kom.)were investigated on the shear strength characteristics of saline loess soil. The root distribution characteristics were assessed via a survey when the plants grew for one year. The effects of the root biomass density, the root mass ratio(RMR)of the fine roots to the coarse roots, the moisture content, and the salt content on the shear strength index of the rooted soil were analyzed via a triaxial compression test, and the mechanism of these effects was discussed. The results indicate that the biomass density decreased linearly with increasing depth. The RMR initially decreased with depth and then increased, exhibiting in a quadratic relationship. The cohesion of the rooted soil increased linearly as the biomass density increased. The cohesion of the rooted soil initially increased with increasing RMR and salt content, and then it decreased. The turning point of the cohesion occurred when the RMR was 0.6 and the salt content was 1.18%.The internal friction angle of the rooted soil initially increased with biomass density and then decreased, and the turning point of the internal friction angle occurred when the biomass density was 0.015 g/cm3.The relationships between the internal friction angle of the rooted soil and the RMR and salt content were exponential incremental and linear subtractive relationship, respectively. Both the cohesion and the internal friction angle of the rooted soil linearly decreased with increasing moisture content.
