Ground penetrating radar(GPR)is a vital non-destructive testing(NDT)technology that can be employed for detecting the backfill grouting of shield tunnels. To achieve intelligent analysis of GPR data and overcome the subjectivity of traditional data processing methods, the CatBoost&BO-TPE model was constructed for regressing the grouting thickness based on GPR waveforms.A full-scale model test and corresponding numerical simulations were carried out to collect GPR data at 400 and 900 MHz,with known backfill grouting thickness. The model test helps address the limitation of not knowing the grout body condition in actual field detection. The data were then used to create machine learning datasets. The method of feature selection was proposed based on the analysis of feature importance and the electromagnetic(EM)propagation law in mediums. The research shows that:(1)the CatBoost&BO-TPE model exhibited outstanding performance in both experimental and numerical data, achieving R^(2)values of 0.9760,0.8971,0.8808,and 0.5437 for numerical data and test data at 400 and 900 MHz.It outperformed extreme gradient boosting(XGBoost)and random forest(RF)in terms of performance in the backfill grouting thickness regression;(2)compared with the full-waveform GPR data, the feature selection method proposed in this paper can promote the performance of the model. The selected features within the 5–30 ns of the A-scan can yield the best performance for the model;(3)compared to GPR data at 900 MHz,GPR data at 400 MHz exhibited better performance in the CatBoost&BO-TPE model. This indicates that the results of the machine learning model can provide feedback for the selection of GPR parameters;(4)the application results of the trained CatBoost&BO-TPE model in engineering are in line with the patterns observed through traditional processing methods, yet they demonstrate a more quantitative and objective nature compared to the traditional method. 展开更多

The problem of shield tunnel uplift is a common issue in tunnel construction.Due to the decrease in shear stiffness at the joints between the rings, uplift is typically observed as bending and dislocation deformation at these joints.Existing modeling methods typically rely on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, only considering the bending effect while disregarding shear deformation.Furthermore, the constraints on the shield tail are often neglected in existing models. In this study,an improved theoretical model of tunnel floating is proposed. The constraint effect of the shield machine shell on the tunnel structure is considered using the structural forms of two finite long beams and one semi-infinite long beam.Furthermore, the Timoshenko beam theory is adopted, providing a more accurate description of tunnel deformation, including both the bending effect and shear deformation, than existing models.Meanwhile, the buoyancy force and stratum resistance are calculated in a nonlinear manner.A reliable method for calculating the shear stiffness correction factor is proposed to better determination of the calculation parameters. The proposed theoretical model is validated through five cases using sitemonitored data. Its applicability and effectiveness are demonstrated.Furthermore, the influences of soil type, buried depth, and buoyancy force on the three key indicators of tunnel floating(i.e.the maximum uplift magnitude, the ring position with the fastest uplift race, and the ring position with the maximum uplift magnitude)are analyzed. The results indicate that the proposed model can provide a better understanding of the floating characteristics of the tunnel structure during construction. 展开更多

Based on the first unde rwater railway shield tunnel, the Shiziyang shield tunnel of Guangzhou Zhu- jiang River, the prototype test was carried out against its segmental lining structure by using "multi-function shield tunnel structure test system". And the mechanical characteristics of segmental lining structure using straight assembling and staggered assembling were studied deeply. The results showed that, the mechanical characteristics of segmental lining structure varied with the water pressures; especially after cracking, the high water pressure played a significant role in slowing down the growing inner force and deformation. It also testi- fied that the failure characteristics varied with straight assembling structure and staggered assembling structure. Active faults are a common adverse geological phenomenon that can occur during tunnel excavation and has a very negative impact on the construction and operation of the tunnel. In this paper, the grade IV rock surrounding the cross-fault tunnel with poor geological conditions has been chosen for the study. The support capacity of 2^(nd) Generation-Negative Poisson’s Ratio(2G-NPR)bolt in an active fault tunnel has been carried out on the basis of relevant results obtained from the geomechanical model test and numerical investigations of failure model for existing unsupported fault tunnel. The investigation shows that surrounding rock of the tunnel is prone to shear deformation and crack formation along the fault,as a result, the rock mass on the upper part of the fault slips as a whole.Furthermore,small-scale deformation and loss of blocks are observed around the tunnel;however, the 2G-NPR bolt support is found to be helpful in keeping the overall tunnel intact without any damage and instability.Due to the blocking effect of fault, the stress of the surrounding rock on the upper and lower parts of the fault is significantly different, and the stress at the left shoulder of the tunnel is greater than that at the right shoulder. The asymmetrical arrangement of 2G-NPR bolts can effectively control the asymmetric deformation and instability of the surrounding rock. The present numerical scheme is in good agreement with the model test results, and can reasonably reflect the stress and displacement characteristics of the surrounding rock of the tunnel. In comparison to unsupported and ordinary PR(Poisson’s Ratio)bolt support,2G-NPR bolt can effectively limit the fault slip and control the stability of the surrounding rock of the fault tunnel. The research findings may serve as a guideline for the use of 2G-NPR bolts in fault tunnel support engineering. 展开更多

This paper introduces an intelligent framework for predicting the advancing speed during earth pressure balance(EPB)shield tunnelling.Five artificial intelligence(AI)models based on machine and deep learning techniques-back-propagation neural network(BPNN),extreme learning machine(ELM),support vector machine(SVM),long-short term memory(LSTM),and gated recurrent unit(GRU)-are used.Five geological and nine operational parameters that influence the advancing speed are considered.A field case of shield tunnelling in Shenzhen City,China is analyzed using the developed models.A total of 1000 field datasets are adopted to establish intelligent models. The prediction performance of the five models is ranked as GRU>LSTM>SVM>ELM>BPNN.Moreover, the Pearson correlation coefficient(PCC)is adopted for sensitivity analysis. The results reveal that the main thrust(MT),penetration(P),foam volume(FV),and grouting volume(GV)have strong correlations with advancing speed(AS).An empirical formula is constructed based on the high-correlation influential factors and their corresponding field datasets. Finally, the prediction performances of the intelligent models and the empirical method are compared. The results reveal that all the intelligent models perform better than the empirical method. 展开更多

Tunnel excavation is a complicated loading-unloading-reloading process characterized by decreased radial stresses and increased axial stresses. An approach that considers only loading,is generally used in tunnel model testing. However, this approach is incapable of characterizing the unloading effects induced by excavation on surrounding rocks and hence presents radial and tangential stress paths during the failure process that are different from the actual stress state of tunnels. This paper carried out a comparative analysis using laboratory model testing and particle flow code(PFC2D)-based numerical simulation, and shed light upon the crack propagation process and, microscopic stress and force chain variations during the loading-unloading process. The failure mode observed in the unloading model test is shear failure. The force chains are strongly correlated with the concrete fracture propagation. In addition, the change patterns of the radial and tangential stresses of surrounding rocks in the broken region,as well as the influence of the initial stress on failure loads are revealed. The surrounding soil of tunnel failure evolution as well as extent and shape of the damage zone during the excavation-induced unloading were also studied. 展开更多

Purpose–Large displacement misalignment under the action of active faults can cause complex threedimensional deformation in subway tunnels, resulting in severe damage, distortion and misalignment. There is no developed system of fortification and related codes to follow. There are scientific problems and technical challenges in this field that have never been encountered in past research and practices.Design/methodology/approach–This paper adopted a self-designed large-scale active fault dislocation simulation loading system to conduct a similar model test of the tunnel under active fault dislocation based on the open-cut tunnel project of the Urumqi Rail Transit Line 2,which passes through the Jiujiawan normal fault. The test simulated the subway tunnel passing through the normal fault, which is inclined at 608.This research compared and analyzed the differences in mechanical behavior between two types of lining section:the opencut double-line box tunnel and the modified double-line box arch tunnel. The structural response and failure characteristics of the open-cut segmented lining of the tunnel under the stick-slip part of the normal fault were studied.Findings–The results indicated that the double-line box arch tunnel improved the shear and longitudinal bending performance.Longitudinal cracks were mainly distributed in the baseplate, wall foot and arch foot, and the crack position was basically consistent with the longitudinal distribution of surrounding rock pressure. This indicated that the longitudinal cracks were due to the large local load of the cross-section of the structure, leading to an excessive local bending moment of the structure, which resulted in large eccentric failure of the lining and formation of longitudinal cracks.Compared with the ordinary box section tunnel, the improved double-line box arch tunnel significantly reduced the destroyed and damage areas of the hanging wall and footwall. The damage area and crack length were reduced by 39 and 59.3%,respectively.This indicates that the improved double-line box arch tunnel had good anti-sliding performance.Originality/value–This paper adopted a self-designed large-scale active fault dislocation simulation loading system to conduct a similar model test of the tunnel under active fault dislocation. This system increased the similarity ratio of the test model, improved the dislocation loading rate and optimized the simulation scheme of the segmented flexible lining and other key factors affecting the test.It is of great scientific significance and engineering value to investigate the structure of subway tunnels under active fault misalignment,to study its force characteristics and damage modes, and to provide a technical reserve for the design and construction of subway tunnels through active faults. 展开更多

There are many buildings with spread foundations along the lines. Shield tunnel construction will disturb the ground, causing displacement or stress to adjacent spread foundations. Based on the similarity theory, a laboratory model test of shield tunnel driving was carried out to study the influence of shield tunnel excavation on the displace ment of adjacent spread foundation. The results show that foundation closer to the tunnel has greater displacement or settlement than that further away. The horizontal dis placement is small and is influenced greatly by the cutting face. The displacement along the machine driving direction is bigger and is significantly affected by the thrust force. Settlement occurs primarily when shield machine passes close to the foundation and is the greatest at that time. Uneven settlement at the bottom of the spread foundation reaches a maximum after the excavation ends. In a numerical simulation, a particle flow model was con structed to study the impact of shield tunnel excavation on the stresses in the ground. The model showed stress con centration at the bottom of the spread foundation. With the increasing ground loss ratio, a loose area appears in the tunnel dome where the contact force dropped. Above the loose area, the contact force increases, forming an arch shaped soil area which prevents the loose area from expanding to the ground surface. The excavation also changed the pressure distribution around spread foundation. 展开更多

At present, shield tunneling often needs to pass through a large number of bridge pile foundations. However, there are few studies on the influence of shield tunneling on adjacent pile foundations by combining with groundwater seepage.Based on Winkler model, the calculation equations of shield tunneling on vertical and horizontal displacement of adjacent bridge pile are derived.Meanwhile, full and part three-dimensional finite element models are established to analyze the trend of bridge pier settlement, ground surface settlement trough, vertical and horizontal displacement of the pile and pile stress under three calculation conditions,i.e.,not considering groundwater effect, considering stable groundwater effect and fluid-soil interaction. The results show that the calculated value is small when the effect of groundwater is not considered;the seepage velocity of the soil above the excavation face is faster than that of the surrounding soil under fluid-soil interaction, and after the shield passing, the groundwater on both sides shows a flow trend of“U”shape on the ground surface supplying to the upper part of the tunnel;the vertical displacement of the pile body is bounded by the horizontal position of the top of the tunnel, the upper pile body settles, and the lower pile body deforms upward. The horizontal displacement of pile body presents a continuous“S”shape distribution, causing stress concentration near the tunnel. The calculated results of fluid-soil interaction are in good agreement with the field measured data and accord with the actual situation. 展开更多

To explore the stress and deformation responses,as well as the failure characteristics of the shield tunnel segment of Hangzhou Metro under the influences of pit excavation and other surrounding projects,a self-developed“shield tunnel segment hydraulic loading system”was used to carry out full-scale loading tests on the three-ring staggered assembled segments. The structural performances and failure process of the tunnel segment under step-by-step asymmetric unloading were studied.A safety index was proposed to describe the bearing capacity of the segment.Next,a finite element model(FEM)was established to analyze the bearing capacity of segment using the test results. Finally, the effect of reinforcement with a steel plate on the deformation and bearing capacity of the segment was analyzed. The results showed that under asymmetric unloading, the peak value and amplitude of the bending moment on the near unloading side converged with a greater value than those on the far side. The concrete internal force exhibited a directional transformation at different load stages.Cracks first appeared at the 180inner arc surface of the bottom standard block and then expanded to both sides, while the rate of crack propagation of the outer arc surface was relatively lower. The bearing capacity of the segments can be evaluated by the combination of the factors,e.g.the residual bearing capacity coefficient, moment transfer coefficient, and characterization coefficient. The segments approaching failure can facilitate the increase in the residual bearing capacity coefficient by more than 50%.This can provide guidance for the service assessment of metro tunnel operations. 展开更多

A mathematical model of the soil pressure system in shield tunneling was proposed to optimize soil pressure control in the soil chamber, based on the constitutive relationship between strain and stress. The desired pressure is determined by using the finite element method. A linear quadratic constant state tracking problem was considered over an infinite time interval. The optimal control law was derived by differentiating the Hamilton function with respect to system input. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed mathematical model and optimal control law, an experimental study on the pressure control of the soil chamber in shield tunneling was conducted in a laboratory. The experiment results show that soil pressure in the soil chamber in shield tunneling can be accurately controlled. 展开更多

This paper presents a new analytical solution for assessing the longitudinal deformation of shield tunnel associated with overcrossing tunnelling in consideration of circumferential joints.A simplified longitudinal beam-spring model(SLBSM)is established to model the longitudinal behaviours of shield tunnel, which can consider the opening and dislocation between segmental rings simultaneously. Then, the existing tunnel is treated as the SLBSM resting on the elastic foundation. The state equations including tunnel displacements and internal forces are constructed to solve the discontinuous deformation of circumferential joint-segmental ring. The feasibility of the proposed solution is verified through three well-documented cases. The predictions from the proposed method are also compared with other analytical methods. It is found that the proposed method can well capture the deformation of tunnel segmental rings and joints, where the rigid displacement mainly occurs in the segmental rings while the rotation and dislocation occur in the circumferential joints. Some dominant parameters are also analysed to explore the effects on existing tunnel deformation, including the rotation stiffness and shearing stiffness of joints, the skew angle and the clearance between new and old tunnels. 展开更多

Due to the large differences in physico-mechanical pro perties of composite strata, jamming, head sinking and other serious consequences occur frequently during tunnel boring machine(TBM)excavation. To analyse the stability of surrounding rocks in composite strata under the disturbance of TBM excavation,a geomechanical model test was carried out based on the Lanzhou water supply project. The evolution patterns and distribution characteristics of the strain, stress, and tunnel deformation and fracturing were analysed. The results showed that during TBM excavation in the horizontal composite formations(with upper soft and lower hard layers and with upper hard and lower soft layers),a significant difference in response to the surrounding rocks can be observed. As the strength ratio of the surrounding rocks decreases, the ratio of the maximum strain of the hard rock mass to that of the relatively soft rock mass gradually decreases. The radial stress of the relatively soft rock mass is smaller than that of the hard rock mass in both types of composite strata, indicating that the weak rock mass in the composite formation results in the difference in the mechanical behaviours of the surrounding rocks. The displacement field of the surrounding rocks obtained by the digital speckle correlation method(DSCM)and the macro-fracture morphology after tunnel excavation visually reflected the deformation difference of the composite rock mass. Finally, some suggestions and measures were provided for TBM excavation in composite strata, such as advance geological forecasting and effective monitoring of weak rock masses. 展开更多

Against the background of the sand-flow foundation treatment engineering of Guangzhou Zhoutouzui variable cross-section immersed tunnel, a kind of sand deposit-detecting method was devised on the basis of full-scale model test of sand-flow method. The real-time data of sand-deposit height and radius were obtained by the self-developed sand-deposit detectors. The test results show that the detecting method is simple and has high precision. In the use of sand-flow method, the sand-carrying capability of fluid is limited, and sand particles are all transported to the sand-deposit periphery through crater, gap and chutes after the sand deposit formed. The diffusion range of the particles outside the sand-deposit does not exceed 2.0 m. Severe sorting of sand particles is not observed because of the unique oblique-layered depositing process. The temporal and spatial distributions of gap and chutes directly affect the sand-deposit expansion, and the expansion trend of the average sand-deposit radius accords with quadratic time-history curve. 展开更多

The stability of the shield tunneling face is an extremely important factor affecting the safety of tunnel construction. In this study,a transparent clay with properties similar to those of Tianjin clay is prepared and a new transparent clay model test apparatus is developed to overcome the“black box”problem in the traditional model test. The stability of the shield tunneling face(failure mode, influence range, support force, and surface settlement)is investigated in transparent clay under active failure.A series of transparent clay model tests is performed to investigate the active failure mode, influence range, and support force of the shield tunneling face under different burial depth conditions, whereas particle flow code three-dimensional numerical simulations are conducted to verify the failure mode of the shield tunneling face and surface settlement along the transverse section under different burial depth conditions. The results show that the engineering characteristics of transparent clay are similar to those of soft clay in Binhai,Tianjin and satisfy visibility requirements. Two types of failure modes are obtained:the overall failure mode(cover/diameter:C/D£1.0)and local failure mode(C/D≥2.0).The influence range of the transverse section is wider than that of the longitudinal section when C/D≥2.0.Additionally,the normalized thresholds of the relative displacement and support force ratio are 3%-6%and 0.2-0.4,respectively.Owing to the cushioning effect of the clay layer, the surface settlement is significantly reduced as the tunnel burial depth increases. 展开更多

As the dimension of the slurry shield is greatly increasing, more and more attention is paid to the face stability of slurry shield-driven tunnel in recently years. A reduced-scale slurry shield model test is carried out based on the background of Qianjiang River Tunnel and Shanghai Yangtze River Tunnel. The results of the model test are presented in this paper with particular emphasis on the slurry shield driving parameters and the critical slurry pressure of the excavating face. It is shown that the behavior of large slurry shield-driving induced by the cutting face is mostly decided by the fluctuation of the slurry pressure in the chamber, and a smaller slurry pressure fluctuation range is presented according to the results of the physical model test. Especially, it is more difcult to control the machine in sandy silt than that in soft clay and muddy clay. The chamber pressure will fluctuate greatly when excavating in high permeability ground, and the gradient of accumulation of the flux diference could be used to evaluate the face balance of the slurry shield excavation. 展开更多

In large-diameter shield tunnels, applying the double-layer lining structure can improve the load-bearing properties and maintain the stability of segmental lining. The secondary lining thickness is a key parameter in the design of a double lining structure, which is worth being explored.Based on an actual large-diameter shield tunnel, loading model tests are carried out to investigate the effect of the secondary lining thickness on the mechanical behaviours of the double lining structure. The test results show that within the range of secondary lining thicknesses discussed, the load-bearing limit of the double-layer lining increases with growing secondary lining thickness. As a passive support, the secondary lining acts as an auxiliary load-bearing structure by contacting the segment. And changes in secondary lining thickness have a significant effect on the contact state between the segment and secondary lining, with both the contact pressure level and the contact area between the two varying. For double-layer lining structures in large-diameter shield tunnels,it is proposed that the stiffness of the secondary lining needs to be matched to the stiffness of the segment,as this allows them to have a coordinated deformation and a good joint load-bearing effect. 展开更多

The loads acting on shield tunneling machines are basic parameters for the equipment design as well as key control parameters throughout the entire operation of the equipment. In the study, a mechanical analysis for the coupled interactive system between the cutterhead and the ground at the excavation face is conducted. The normal and tangential loads acting on the cutterhead are decoupled and solved, with consideration of the influence of three key factors on loads: geological condition, operating status and equipment structure. Then analytical expressions for the thrust and the torque acting on the equipment under uniform geological condition are established. On this basis, the impact of soil-rock interbedded ground on acting loads is further considered. A theoretical model for loads prediction of earth pressure balance (EPB) shield machines working under soil-rock interbedded ground is proposed. This model is subsequently applied to loads prediction for a shield tunneling project under soil-rock interbedded ground. The computational value of the thrust and the torque, the measured loads and the load ranges from Krause empirical formula are compared. Thus, this model for loads prediction acting on shield tunneling machines under soil-rock interbedded ground has been proved to be effective. 展开更多

This paper presents a surrogate modeling approach for predicting ground surface settlement caused by synchronous grouting during shield tunneling process. The proposed method combines finite element simulations with machine learning algorithms and introduces an intelligent optimization algorithm to invert geological parameters and synchronous grouting variables, thereby predicting ground surface settlement without conducting numerous finite element analyses. Two surrogate models based on the random forest algorithm are established. The first is a parameter inversion surrogate model that combines an artificial fish swarm algorithm with random forest, taking into account the actual number and distribution of complex soil layers. The second model predicts surface settlement during synchronous grouting by employing actual cover-diameter ratio, inverted soil parameters, and grouting variables. To avoid changes to input parameters caused by the number of overlying soil layers, the dataset of this model is generated by the finite element model of the homogeneous soil layer. The surrogate modeling approach is validated by the case history of a large-diameter shield tunnel in Beijing, providing an alternative to numerical computation that can efficiently predict surface settlement with acceptable accuracy. 展开更多
