The considered geometry includes a g'ral)hite boat filled with germanium placed in a cylindrical quartz tube. A flow of Ar and H2 gas mixture is purged througll the tube. A narrow section of the, boat is assmned to be exposed to a constant heat rate produced b v an rf coil located outside the quartz tube. FZTWs often carry significant information about a fault's internal structure, so i...Fault zone trapped waves (FZTWs) mainly travel along the fractured fault zone (FZ) which is of low velocity and high attenuation. FZTWs often carry significant information about a fault's internal structure, so it is important to understand their wave field characteristics for FZ structure inversion. Most previous simulations are based on vertical faults, while in this paper we implement the FZTW simulations on vertical or inclined faults and compare their wave fields in both time and frequency domains. The results show that the existence of fault zone and inclined angle of fault can significantly influence the features of waves near faults. In amplitude, a fault zone can generate a larger amplitude of waves. The velocity contrast between two wails of fault may lead to amplification of amplitudes in the low velocity fault wall. In frequency, a fault zone tends to influence the waves in the low frequency range. In a pattern of particle polarization of FZTWs, it tends to be single direction for vertical faults but fork to multiple directions for inclined faults, which might provide a new way to study the fault zone with FZTWs. These conclusions may be valuable for FZ structure inversion, and will enhance the knowledge on near-fault strong ground motions.展开更多
Rainfall, as one of the most significant factors triggering the residual soil slope failure, leads to not only the reduction of soil shear strength, but also the increase of soil weight and the decrease of matric suct...Rainfall, as one of the most significant factors triggering the residual soil slope failure, leads to not only the reduction of soil shear strength, but also the increase of soil weight and the decrease of matric suction as well. All these modifications in soil properties have important influence on the slope stability. The water infiltration and redistribution inside the slope are the preconditions of the slope stability under rainfall conditions. Based on the numerical simulation via finite element method, the water infiltration process under rainfall conditions was studied in the present work. The emphases are the formation, distribution and dissipation of transient saturated zone. As for the calculation parameters, the SWCC and the saturated permeability have been determined by pressure plate test and variable head test respectively. The entire process(formation, development, dissipation) of the transient saturated zone was studied in detail. The variations of volumetric water content, matric suction and hydraulic gradient inside the slope, and the eventually raise of groundwater table were characterized and discussed, too. The results show that the major cause of the formation of transient saturated zone is ascribed to the fact that the exudation velocity of rainwater on the wetting front is less than the infiltration velocity of rainfall; as a result, the water content of the soil increases. On the other hand, the formation and extension of transient saturated zone have a close relationship with rainfall intensity and duration. The results can help the geotechnical engineers for the deeper understanding of the failure of residual slope under rainfall condition. It is also suggested that the proper drainage system in the slope may be the cost-effective slope failure mitigation method.展开更多

The flow pattern in the confluent meander bend channel under the conditions of different discharge ratios and junction angles is numerically simulated by means of the large eddy simulation(LES), and the characterist...The flow pattern in the confluent meander bend channel under the conditions of different discharge ratios and junction angles is numerically simulated by means of the large eddy simulation(LES), and the characteristics of the flow separation zone are analyzed. Numerical results are well validated by experimental data with a good agreement. Analysis of the vertical confinement shows that the turbulence within the separation zone can be characterized as quasi-2-D. Details of the separation zone characteristics are revealed as shown by mean velocity isolines. According to the analysis of numerical results, the length and the width of the separation zone generally increase with the increase of the discharge ratio and the junction angle. However, the width of the separation zone keeps substantially constant when the junction angle increases from 60 o to90o. The dimensionless shape of the separation zone is nearly the same for three discharge ratios and three junction angles. The formulas of the relative width and the relative length of the separation zone are obtained by means of the polynomial fit method.展开更多
The combined effects of martensite-austenite(MA)constituent and pearlite colony on cleavage crack initiation in the simulated coarse-grained heat-affected zone(CGHAZ)of V-N-Ti microalloyed offshore platform steel ...The combined effects of martensite-austenite(MA)constituent and pearlite colony on cleavage crack initiation in the simulated coarse-grained heat-affected zone(CGHAZ)of V-N-Ti microalloyed offshore platform steel under different heat inputs were investigated.The results of welding simulation,instrumented impact test,and quantitative analysis indicated that the size of the MA constituent decreased with the increase in cooling time,and by contrast,the size of the pearlite colony increased.According to Griffith theory,the critical sizes of cleavage microcracks were calculated.With the increase of cooling time,the calculated microcrack size could be characterized by the size of the MA constituent first,and then fitted with the size of the pearlite colony.Moreover,the calculated microcrack size variation was opposite to the microcrack initiation energy.This phenomenon is probably due to the combined effects of the MA constituent and pearlite colony with increasing the cooling time of the specimen′s temperature from800 to 500 ℃.展开更多
Intelligent speed adaptation (ISA) is considered as an effective measure to reduce number of traffic accidents in the field of intelligent transportation systems (ITS). On the other hand, its effects for traffic s...Intelligent speed adaptation (ISA) is considered as an effective measure to reduce number of traffic accidents in the field of intelligent transportation systems (ITS). On the other hand, its effects for traffic safety are still doubted by many people. To make the possibility analysis, an experiment is conducted by using driving simulator. Regarding ISA ap- proaches, there are three modes: mandatory, voluntary and advisory. Among them, the advisory type seems to be the easiest one to introduce. Therefore, we focus on the advisory mode in this study by considering ISA just at the beginning stage in Japan. The experiment consists of four steps: without ISA, ISA using pictures, ISA using voices and again without ISA. The outputs obtained from the driving simulator are analyzed combined with the consciousness of the participants. The experiment shows that the ISA can improve recognition of speed limitation especially for people who have random rambling or looking aside tendency. Furthermore, the ISA especially when using voices can contribute in changing the consciousness of people who are aggressive in driving. Their driving speeds can reduce so that positive effects on traffic safety can be concluded.展开更多
