An Experiment Report on the Linguistic Readiness of Simultaneous Interpreting Trainees

Linguistic readiness,which refers to language efficiency required for simultaneous interpretation,is different from that in daily communication.This experiment aims at observing the linguistic readiness of simultaneous interpreting trainees,targeting eight post-graduate students majoring in interpretation.After a mock simultaneous interpreting task,the performance of the trainees will be assessed by themselves and three native speakers as well.Through the comparison of the assessment made by the trainees and the native speakers,the author aims at exploring the gap between the number of information points that the trainees think they have delivered and the number that native speakers obtain from the trainees’production,and classifying those information points that could not be understood by native speakers into different types.A conclusion is reached that their linguistic readiness needs to be improved.Therefore,it is necessary to pay more attention to linguistic readiness in interpreting training.

Mapping the small-world properties of brain networks in Chinese to English simultaneous interpreting by using functional near-infrared spectroscopy

The aim of this study is to examine the small-world properties of functional brain networks inChinese to English simultaneous interpreting(SI)using functional near-infrared spectroscopy(INIRS),In particular,the fNIRS neuroimaging combined with complex network analysis wasperformed to extract the features of functional brain networks underling three translationstrategies associated with Chinese to English SI:"transcoding"that takes the"shortcut"linkingtranslation equivalents between Chinese and the English,code-mixing"that basically does notinvolve blingual procesing,and"transphrasingn that takes the long route"involving amonolingual processing of meaning in Chinese and then another monolingual processing ofmeaning in English.Our results demonstrated that the small-world net work topology was able todistinguish well bet ween the transcoding,code-mixing and transphrasing strategies related toChinese to English SI.

A Review on Research on Technology-Assisted Simultaneous Interpreting

Simultaneous interpreting(SI)has undergone a long historical period.With a variety of technologies employed in SI,the researches on it have taken on some new features and brought about new inspirations to this industry.This paper aims at first introducing various technologies or technological tools used in interpreting,and then reviewing on the history of the development of technology-assisted interpreting,the current researches,and their limitations,and finally drawing some inspirations from the past researches of technology-assisted SI,to offer some proposals on the future research trends on technology-assisted SI,ranging from carrying out more empirical studies and surveys to collect interpreters’attitudes towards technology used in SI,to conducting psychological experiments to analyze and explain interpreters’emotional response to technology-assisted SI,to designing specific measurements and indicators to reveal interpreters’discomfort experienced during technology-assisted SI.

Analysis of Difficulties in Simultaneous Interpreting(SI) from a Psycho-linguistic Perspective

Nowadays,simultaneous interpreting(SI) plays a prominent role in global communications,especially for important international affairs.This kind of interpretation delivers information in an instantaneous way without wasting extra time for language processing.Performing well in SI requires long-time training and abundant experience.Making a comprehensive categorization and analysis on the difficulties in SI on the basis of psycho-linguistic theories are the key points.Due to the distinctive features of these difficulties,corresponding suggestions will be offered to improve the efficiency in SI training and to level up the performance of SI interpreters.

The Feasibility of the Syntactic Linearity in the Chinese Version of Life of Pie

Translation is by no means a process of bilingual alternating.Practically speaking,translators need to abide by different princi-ples according to different contexts and readers.The emergence of translation theories in the world contributes a lot for cross-culturecommunication.With the development and prevalence of the simultaneous interpreting,people tend to shift their eyes from translation tointerpretation.Syntactic linearity makes interpreting easier and more efficient.However,whether this strategy can be applied into writ-ten translation is unknown.This thesis takes Life of Pi as an example to further discuss the feasibility of syntactic linearity used in liter-ary translation,on the basis of interpreting and translating theories.
