Automatic roadway formation by roof cutting is a sustainable nonpillar mining method that has the potential to increase coal recovery, reduce roadway excavation and improve mining safety. In this method, roof cutting is the key process for stress relief, which significantly affects the stability of the formed roadway. This paper presents a directionally single cracking(DSC)technique for roof cutting with considerations of rock properties. The mechanism of the DSC technique was investi-gated by explicit finite element analyses. The DSC technique and roof cutting parameters were evaluated by discrete element simulation and field experiment. On this basis, the optimized DSC technique was tested in the field. The results indicate that the DSC technique could effectively control the blast-induced stress distribution and crack propagation in the roof rock, thus, achieve directionally single cracking on the roadway roof. The DsC technique for roof cutting with optimized parameters could effectively reduce the deformation and improve the stability of the formed roadway.Field engineering application verified the feasibility and effectiveness of the evaluated DSC technique for roof cutting. 展开更多

Limit loads are widely studied and several limit load solutions are proposed to some typical geometry of weldments. However, there are no limit load solutions exist for the single edge crack weldments in tension(SEC(T)),which is also a typical geometry in fracture analysis. The mis-matching limit load for thick plate with SEC(T) are investigated and the special limit load solutions are proposed based on the available mis-matching limit load solutions and systematic finite element analyses. The real weld configurations are simplified as a strip, and different weld strength mis-matching ratio M,crack depth/width ratio a/W and weld width 2H are in consideration. As a result,it is found that there exists excellent agreement between the limit load solutions and the FE results for almost all the mis-matching ration M,a/W and ligament-to-weld width ratio(W-a)/H.Moreover,useful recommendations are given for evaluating the limit loads of the EBW structure with SEC(T).For the EBW joints with SEC(T),the mis-matching limit loads can be obtained assuming that the components are wholly made of base metal, when M changing from 1.6 to 0.6.When M decreasing to 0.4,the mis-matching limit loads can be obtained assuming that the components are wholly made of base metal only for large value of(W-a)/H.The recommendations may be useful for evaluating the limit loads of the EBW structures with SEC(T).The engineering simplifications are given for assessing the limit loads of electron beam welded structure with SEC(T). 展开更多

Traditional explosives have characteristics of high risk, large vibration, and poor directional fracturing.Consequently,an instantaneous expander with a single crack surface(IESCS),which is a novel nonexplosive directional rock-breaking technique, has been developed. The directional roof-cutting mechanism of the IESCS method, driven by high-pressure gas,was theoretically analyzed.Laboratory experiments and numerical simulations proved the directional slitting effect of the IESCS method to be excellent.Compared with shaped-charge blasting, the charge of IESCS was reduced by 8.9%,but the crack rate increased by 9%in field tests. After IESCS pre-splitting,the roof directionally collapsed along the cutting line, and the gangue filled the goaf. Moreover, the directional roof cutting by the IESCS could decrease roadway stress. The average pressure of hydraulic supports on the cutting side of the roof was 31%lower than that on the non-cutting side of the roof after pre-splitting.After the self-formed roadway constructed by the IESCS was stabilized, the final relative displacement of the roof and floor was 157.3 mm,meeting the required standard of the next working face. Thus, the IESCS was effectively applied to directional roof pre-splitting.The results demonstrate the promising potential of IESCS in the mining and geotechnical fields. 展开更多

In this paper interfacial edge crack problems are considered by the application of the finite element method. The stress intensity factors are accurately determined from the ratio of crack-tip-stress value between the target given unknown and reference problems. The reference problem is chosen to produce the singular stress fields proportional to those of the given unknown problem. Here the original proportional method is improved through utilizing very refined meshes and post-processing technique of linear extrapolation. The results for a double-edge interface crack in a bonded strip are newly obtained and compared with those of a single-edge interface crack for different forms of combination of material. It is found that the stress intensity factors should be compared in the three different zones of relative crack lengths. Different from the case of a cracked homogeneous strip, the results for the double edge interface cracks are found to possibly be bigger than those for a single edge interface crack under the same relative crack length. 展开更多
