It is constantly exposed to the environment and is very resilient. But exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun results in the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and subsequent inflammatory responses that can overwhelm the innate protective mechanisms of the skin. This results in damage and premature aging. Strategies to mitigate this premature photoaging might include avoidance of sunlight. However, some sunlight exposure is beneficial to health. One notable example of this is the production of vitamin D. A more practical approach to preventing adverse effects of UV light in the skin is antioxidant supplementation. Dietary antioxidants may help control ROS propagation following UV light exposure. To further evaluate the utility of antioxidants in protecting the skin, in vitro, in vivo and human studies of three well known dietary antioxidants are reviewed and discussed. The data clearly demonstrate that vitamin C, grape seed extract and citrus bioflavonoids have the potential to reduce the damaging effects of excess sun exposure via antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulating mechanisms. As such, regular ingestion of dietary antioxidants appears to be a useful strategy for protecting the skin against photoaging.展开更多

However, there are few reports regarding the constituents and biological activities of tomato seed extract (TSE). Recently, we found that saponins are major constituents of TSE including lycoperoside H. Previous reports have described that several plant-derived saponins improve skin diseases such as wounds and microangiopathy. Therefore, to discover the effect of TSE on the skin condition, we conducted a clinical trial of TSE (Tomato Seed Extract-P) standardized with lycoperoside H when orally ingested. <strong>Methods:</strong> The study was performed as a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. TSE (200 mg daily) containing 1 mg of lycoperoside H was used as the active sample. We enrolled 44 Japanese women who have concerns about facial elasticity and relatively low facial skin elasticity. All subjects were randomly allocated into either the active group (n = 22) or the placebo group (n = 22) using a computerized random-number generator. Capsules containing either the active sample or a placebo were administered for 8 weeks between October 12, 2020, and January 16, 2021. Facial elasticity, specifically the R7 value, was evaluated as the primary outcome. The remaining facial R parameters, upper arm R parameters, and other skin parameters including epidermal moisture, trans epidermal water loss, dermal parameters, and advanced glycation end products (AGEs) parameters were measured at 0, 4, and 8 weeks of ingestion. Blood, urine, and body parameters were also evaluated for safety. <strong>Results:</strong> Forty-three subjects completed the trial, and the per protocol set comprised 21 subjects in the TSE group and 22 subjects in the placebo group. After ingesting TSE for 8 weeks, the R7 value was significantly higher in the TSE group compared to the placebo group. Furthermore, the change in R7 values from the baseline at 4 and 8 weeks were also higher in the TSE group. Among the secondary outcomes, facial elasticity parameters including R2, R5, R1, and R4 at 4 weeks and facial R5, R1, and R4 and upper arm R2 at 8 weeks were higher in the TSE group. In addition, plasma pentosidine significantly decreased in the TSE group after 8 weeks of ingestion. There were no significant differences in moisture, DermaLab<span style="color:#000000;font-family:Roboto, "white-space:normal;background-color:#D46399;">®</span> parameters and AGEs parameters except plasma pentosidine. Laboratory tests revealed no abnormalities suggesting adverse effects of TSE. <strong>Conclusions:</strong> TSE (200 mg/day) standardized with lycoperoside H improved the facial elasticity parameters. Thus, daily ingestion of TSE was suggested to be beneficial for maintaining the facial skin elasticity. However, the relationship between the reduction of pentosidine and skin elasticity by TSE ingestion should be clarified through further studies. <strong>Trial Registration:</strong> UMIN-CTR: UMIN000041881. <strong>Foundation:</strong> Oryza Oil & Fat Chemical Co., Ltd.展开更多

A novel approach to the management of several skin diseases, including AD, involves the use of specific beneficial probiotic bacteria aimed at restoring the skin microbiome balance and decreasing the skin colonization with pathogens. Objective: This study assessed the soothing efficacy and tolerability of a new probiotic-based skin care product combining two live Lactobacillus rhamnosus strains and berry seed oils on eczematous lesions in subjects with atopic skin. Patients and Methods: Twenty-five adults with atopic skin and presenting at least one inflammatory lesion applied the product on the defined lesion for 28 days, once to twice daily. Severity of eczema signs (EASI score) and intensity of pruritus (VAS) were assessed, and digital images were captured following treatment. Cutaneous tolerability and subject satisfaction were also investigated. Results: A statistically significant decrease in mean EASI score was observed after 28 days (-27%, p = 0.011). A visible improvement in skin aspect was observed in 67% of the subjects on week 4. On average, the intensity of pruritus decreased by 57% as compared to baseline (p = 0.011). This effect was observed in 86% of the subjects. No relevant adverse reactions were observed following treatment with the skin care product and the majority of the subjects appreciated the product for its general characteristics, properties, and efficacy. Conclusion: The results suggest that this skin care product containing two live Lactobacillus rhamnosus strains and berry seed oils could be used for the treatment of eczematous lesions in subjects with atopic skin.展开更多

Therefore, this study aimed to clarify the physiological skin characteristics at common pressure ulcer sites and their relationship with pressure ulcer risk and demographic/laboratory data in bedridden elderly Japanese patients. <strong>Methods:</strong> This study involved 55 elderly Japanese patients in a long-term care hospital and 25 female Japanese university students. Skin surface temperature, epidermal water content, transepidermal water loss, skin erythema/redness, skin elasticity, and skin thickness were measured using noninvasive devices. The sacral and both heel areas (sites predisposed to pressure ulcers) and mid-to-lower back area (control site) were observed. <strong>Results:</strong> Elderly patients showed a low epidermal water content at both heels (right heel, 14.8 ± 9.1 arbitrary units, AU.;left heel, 14.4 ± 8.3 AU). Transepidermal water loss remained acceptable at all sites in older patients despite the presence of dry skin (back, 7.1 ± 1.8 g/hm2;sacrum, 7.4 ± 3.0 g/hm2;right heel, 17.7 ± 7.1 g/hm2;left heel, 19.4 ± 8.1 g/hm2). Back (0.61 ± 0.13 AU) and sacral (0.67 ± 0.11 AU) skin elasticity and sacral skin thickness (0.97 ± 0.56 cm) were significantly lower than those of healthy young people (0.86 ± 0.04 AU, 0.87 ± 0.05 AU, and 2.27 ± 0.84 cm, respectively;<em>p</em> < 0.001 for all sites). Moderate positive correlations were observed between back skin elasticity and serum albumin level (r = 0.445, <em>p</em> < 0.001), and between sacral skin thickness and BMI (r = 0.506, <em>p</em> < 0.001) in older patients. <strong>Conclusions:</strong> Our findings showed that skin thickness and elasticity should be prioritized when evaluating pressure ulcer risk at the sacral region in bedridden elderly Japanese patients. Moreover, skin moisturization should be considered to minimize the risk at the heels in such patients.展开更多

Maintaining the health of the skin barrier has arguably become more important than ever in the modern world, in which a large majority of people are exposed to environmental insults. These external factors can damage the integrity of the skin barrier and prematurely age the skin. Therefore, it has become increasingly important to maintain and protect the stratum corneum. Here, we briefly review the complex, multilayered structure of the skin and relate it to clinically translatable function, with an emphasis on the stratum corneum. In the context of epidermal structure and function, the formulation and clinical data for Phelityl® Reviving Cream will be reviewed. Phelityl Reviving Cream was shown to be associated with improvements in both immediate- and long-term parameters, including a significant positive effect on the skin barrier and immediate and long-lasting hydration.展开更多

The BSTI questionnaire has been tested over the last decade on over 200,000 people of various ages and ethnicities in different geographic locations around the world. In this study, data were collected from 52,862 patients to compare skin type prevalence between those who presented to doctor’s offices and those who took the quiz without supervision online. The most common skin types varied only slightly between patients that took the quiz online and those that completed the questionnaire in their doctor’s office. This indicates that the prevalence of skin types seen in the doctor’s office is similar to that in the general population and that supervision is not necessary to get an accurate result on the BSTI. [iii] In addition, comparison of data gathered in China, Korea, and the US did not show a significant difference in skin type prevalence between Asian and Caucasian skin types. [iv] This study demonstrates that the English version of the BSTI is valid for English speaking patients online, and in doctors’ offices in the US, China and Korea.展开更多

文摘The skin is a major protective organ of the body. As such, regular ingestion of dietary antioxidants appears to be a useful strategy for protecting the skin against photoaging.
文摘<strong>Background and Objective:</strong> Tomato seeds are edible seeds unconsciously ingested with the fruit. 文摘Herein,we report a new technique that consists of placing two 125 I seed strands and two stents in the right and left intrahepatic bile ducts for the treatment of hilar cholangiocarcinoma.A 75-year-old man presented with jaundice and was diagnosed with Bismuth type Ⅳ Klatskin tumor.Abdominal computed tomography(CT) showed intrahepatic and extrahepatic bile ductdilatation and a soft tissue mass in the hepatic hilum.Because curative surgical resection was not possible,we placed 125 I seed strands and stents in the right and left intrahepatic bile ducts.Three months later, abdominal CT showed less intrahepatic and extrahepatic bile duct dilatation than before the procedure. This technique was feasible and could be considered for the treatment of patients with Bismuth type Ⅳ tumors.
文摘Background: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic pruritic inflammatory skin disease characterized by a reduced microbiome diversity which favours the skin colonization with pathogenic bacteria, mainly with Staphylococcus aureus. Conclusion: The results suggest that this skin care product containing two live Lactobacillus rhamnosus strains and berry seed oils could be used for the treatment of eczematous lesions in subjects with atopic skin.

文摘Conformable and wire-less charging energy storage devices play important roles in enabling the fast development of wearable,non-contact soft electronics. However, current wire-less charging power sources are still restricted by limited flexural angles and fragile connection of components, resulting in the failure expression of performance and constraining their fur-ther applications in health monitoring wearables and moveable artificial limbs.Herein,we present an ultracompatible skin-like integrated wireless charging micro-supercapacitor,which building blocks(including electrolyte, electrode and substrate)are all evaporated by liquid precursor.Owing to the infiltration and permeation of the liquid, each part of the integrated device attached firmly with each other, forming a compact and all-in-one configuration. In addition, benefitting from the controllable volume of electrode solution precursor, the electrode thickness is easily regulated varying from 11.7 to 112.5μm.This prepared thin IWC-MSC skin can fit well with curving human body, and could be wireless charged to store electricity into high capacitive micro-supercapacitors(11.39 F cm-3)of the integrated device. We believe this work will shed light on the construction of skin-attachable electronics and irregular sensing microrobots.

文摘As the body’s integumentary system, the skin is vulnerable to injuries. The subsequent wound healing processes aim to restore dermal and epidermal integrity and functionality. To this end, multiple tissue-resident cells and recruited immune cells cooperate to efficiently repair the injured tissue.Such temporally-and spatially-coordinated interplay necessitates tight regulation to prevent collateral damage such as overshooting immune responses and excessive inflammation. In this context, regulatory T cells(Tregs)hold a key role in balancing immune homeostasis and mediating cutaneous wound healing.A comprehensive understanding of Tregs’multifaceted field of activity may help decipher wound pathologies and, ultimately, establish new treatment modalities.Herein,we review the role of Tregs in orchestrating the regeneration of skin adnexa and catalyzing healthy wound repair.Further,we discuss how Tregs operate during fibrosis, keloidosis, and scarring.
文摘<strong>Background:</strong> Previous studies have not specifically measured skin characteristics at common sites of pressure ulcers in high-risk elderly patients. Moreover, skin moisturization should be considered to minimize the risk at the heels in such patients.
文摘The epidermis, and in particular its outermost layer, the stratum corneum, contributes much of the barrier function of the skin and is a readily visible representation of skin health. Phelityl Reviving Cream was shown to be associated with improvements in both immediate- and long-term parameters, including a significant positive effect on the skin barrier and immediate and long-lasting hydration.
文摘Background:Oxidative stress is a significant factor in skin aging and pigmentation, which can be precipitated by various circumstances.Antioxidants and tyrosinase inhibitors, such as carotenoids, yeast extract(glutathione),sodium hyaluronate, astaxanthin, and niacin, can individually protect the skin against aging through distinct mechanisms. These mechanisms potentially enhance the skin barrier and improve signs of aging and pigmentation. However, the synergistic effects of these compounds,as found in a golden tomato extract formulation, have been scarcely explored. Objective:To evaluate the effects of an orally administered formulation on the skin aging and pigmentation.Material and Methods:In this study,a randomized,double-blind,parallel-controlled trial was conducted, utilizing the WONDERLAB?Tomato Niacinamide beverage.Out of all participants,62 volunteers completed the experiment and were included in the statistical analysis. Results:The results indicated that after eight weeks of consuming the research product, there were no significant changes in the skin indicators within the placebo group. In contrast, the treatment group receiving the sample formulation exhibited a 35.63%increase in stratum corneum hydration and a 29.39%reduction in transepidermal water loss(TEWL),suggesting enhanced skin hydration.Visual assessments revealed improvements in skin color and gloss index by 15.03%and 11.41%,respectively,in the treatment group.Furthermore, the skin gloss and individual typology angle(ITA)value increased by 18.59%and 6.36%,respectively,leading to a lighter skin tone.Significant enhancements were also observed in skin pigmentation, color uniformity, and redness. After eight weeks of intervention with the sample, blood levels of superoxide dismutase(SOD)and glutathione peroxidase(GPx)increased, while malondialdehyde(MDA)levels decreased. Conclusion:These findings confirm that continuous intake of the tomato extract formulation over eight weeks effectively improved the volunteers'skin whitening and hydration, and visibly brightened skin tone through an antioxidant mechanism.
文摘To verify the effectiveness of digital optical 3D image analyzer EvaSKIN in the objective and quantitative evaluation of wrinkles.A total of 115 subjects were recruited, the facial images of the subjects were collected by digital optical 3D image analyzer and manual camera, the changes of crow’s feet with age were analyzed.Pictures obtained by manual photography can be directly used for observation and preliminary grading of wrinkles. However, the requirements for evaluators are high, and the results are prone to errors, which will affect the accuracy of the evaluation. Therefore, skilled raters are needed.Compared with the manual photography method, the digital optical 3D image analyzer EvaSKIN can realize three-dimensional extraction of wrinkles, and obtain the change trend of crow’s feet with age.20~30 years old, wrinkles begin to appear slowly;wrinkles will increase rapidly at the age of 30~50;The length of 50~60 year old wrinkles is basically fixed, the wrinkles develop longitudewise, gradually widen and deepen, and the area, depth and volume increase is obvious, and the skin aging condition is intensified.the digital optical 3D image analyzer EvaSKIN realizes the 3D extraction of wrinkles, quantifies the circumference, area, average depth, maximum depth and volume of wrinkles, realizes the objective and quantitative evaluation of wrinkle state,is more accurate in the measurement of wrinkles, and provides a new instrument and method for the evaluation of wrinkles.it is a perfect and supplement to the traditional evaluation methods, and to a certain extent,it helps the research and development and evaluation institutions of cosmetics to obtain more abundant and three-dimensional data support.

文摘Inflammatory skin disorders can cause chronic scarring and functional impairments, posing a significant burden on patients and the healthcare system.Conventional therapies, such as corticosteroids and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, are limited in efficacy and associated with adverse effects.Recently,nanozyme(NZ)-based hydrogels have shown great promise in addressing these challenges.NZ-based hydrogels possess unique therapeutic abilities by combining the therapeutic benefits of redox nanomaterials with enzymatic activity and the water-retaining capacity of hydrogels. The multifaceted therapeutic effects of these hydrogels include scavenging reactive oxygen species and other inflammatory mediators modulating immune responses toward a pro-regenerative environment and enhancing regenerative potential by triggering cell migration and differentiation. This review highlights the current state of the art in NZ-engineered hydrogels(NZ@hydrogels)for anti-inflammatory and skin regeneration applications. It also discusses the underlying chemo-mechano-biological mechanisms behind their effectiveness.Additionally, the challenges and future directions in this ground, particularly their clinical translation, are addressed. The insights provided in this review can aid in the design and engineering of novel NZ-based hydrogels, offering new possibilities for targeted and personalized skin-care therapies.
文摘The Baumann Skin Typing System diagnoses patients as having one of 16 skin types based on their answers to a validated questionnaire [i] known as the Baumann Skin Type Indicator [ii]. [iv] This study demonstrates that the English version of the BSTI is valid for English speaking patients online, and in doctors’ offices in the US, China and Korea.

文摘Zeolites have been widely used as catalysts,ion-exchangers,and adsorbents in chemical industries, detergent industry, steel industry, glass industry, ceramic industry, medical and healthfield, and environmentalfield, and recently applied in energy storage.Seed-assisted synthesis is a very effective approach in promoting the crystallization of zeolites. In some cases, the target zeolite cannot be formed in the absence of seed zeolite. In homologous seed-assisted synthesis, the structure of the seed zeolite is the same to that of the target zeolite, while the structure of the seed zeolite is different to that of the target zeolite in the heterologous seed-assisted synthesis. In this review,we briefly summarized the heterologous seed-assisted syntheses of zeolites and analyzed the structure-directing effect of heterologous seeds and surveyed the“common composite building units(CBUs)hypothesis”and the“common secondary building units(SBUs)hypothesis”.However, both hypotheses cannot explain all observations on the heterologous seed-assisted syntheses. Finally,we proposed that the formation of the target zeolite does need nuclei with the structure of target zeolite and the formation of the nuclei of the target zeolite can be promoted by either the undissolved seed crystals with the same CBUs or SBUs to the target zeolite or by the facilitated appropriate distribution of the specific building units due to the presence of the heterologous seed that does not have any common CBUs and SBUs with the target zeolite.
