Previous methods studied only one or two factors, such as school choice, or teacher quality, on school performance. Therefore the results they provide can be limited. We propose a multi-agent approach to integrate multiple actors in a school system. These actors include teachers, students, supporting staffs and administrators. The interactions among these actors compose a hierarchical school social network. We first detect the hierarchical community structure in this school network by using an agglomerative hierarchical algorithm. Existing agglomerative hierarchical algorithms usually calculate similarity or dissimilarity between two clusters by using some measure of distance between pairs of observations. We, however, develop a method that calculates similarity based on social interactions between interactions is essential in multi-agent systems. Our algorithm is applied to 15 school districts in Bexar County, Texas, and it provides satisfying results on generating the hierarchical structure of all school districts. We then use the detected structure of the social network to evaluate the school system’s organization performance. We design and implement a funding evaluation model to decompose the funding policy task into subtasks and then evaluate these subtasks by using funding distribution policies from past years and looking for possible relationships between student performances and funding policies. Experiments in the 15 school districts in Bexar County show no significant correlation between student performance and the amount of the funding a school district received.展开更多

Social organization can be used to evaluate living conditions and expansion potential. Bisexual group size, ratio of males to females and group composition are essential elements determining the type of social organization. Although the first report on Shortridge’s capped langurs(Trachypithecus shortridgei) was in the 1970 s, until now, the species only inhabits forests of the Dulongjiang valley in northwest Yunnan, China, with c. 250-370 individuals in 19 populations. To understand its social organization, we collected data from five groups of Shortridge’s langurs at Silaluo in the Dulongjiang valley during August 2012-October 2013. Family groups consist of one adult male, 2–3 adult females and up to five young. Group size averaged 8(7-9) individuals. The ratio of adult males to females(M/F) was 1:2.9, infants to adult females was(I/F) 1:2.2; and ratio of adults to immatures was 1:1.2, indicating the potential of a population increasing. Birth season was during March-July and the inter-birth interval was two years.展开更多

For each criteria, at first, the total inconsistency between the rankings of all alternatives for the group and the ones for every decision maker is defined after the decision maker weights in respect to the criteria are considered. Similarly, the total inconsistency between their final rankings for the group and the ones under every criteria is determined after the criteria weights are taken into account. Then two nonlinear integer programming models minimizing respectively the two total inconsistencies above are developed and then transformed to two dynamic programming models to obtain separately the rankings of all alternatives for the group with respect to each criteria and their final rankings. A supplier selection case illustrated the proposed method, and some discussions on the results verified its effectiveness. This work develops a new measurement of ordinal preferences’ inconsistency in multi-criteria group decision-making (MCGDM) and extends the cook-seiford social selection function to MCGDM considering weights of criteria and decision makers and can obtain unique ranking result.展开更多

Meeting the challenge of sea level rise requires that actors across multiple sectors—citizens, community organizations, industry and government—understand the risks and work together to make critical decisions regarding adaptation strategies and actions. The case study area includes Little Creek Amphibious Base, which is bordered by the cities of Norfolk and Virginia Beach. Adaptation responses to sea level rise by the military base and the local governments will impact each other and the residents of the area, but no cooperative agreements are in place for a joint or collaborative response. This case study examines public and private infrastructure at risk, the infrastructure interdependencies, and mechanisms for providing collaborative solutions. Engagement of area residents and other stakeholders is also integral to the process of adaptation, which includes educating about sea level rise risk and provides a mechanism for social learning that enables stakeholders to participate in critical adaptation decisions. The case study demonstrates a method to improve resiliency in the case study area and inform a regional, multi-sectoral response to sea level rise adaptation strategies.展开更多

Vertex attributes and their similarities were considered and calculated. An approach has been proposed and tested to detect research community in research organizations based on this multi-relation researcher network.Findings: Detection of topologically well-connected, semantically coherent and meaningful research community was achieved.Research limitations: The sample size of evaluation experiments was relatively small. In the present study, a limited number of 72 researchers were analyzed for constructing researcher network and detecting research community. Therefore, a large sample size is required to give more information and reliable results.Practical implications: The proposed multi-relation researcher network and approaches for discovering research communities of similar research interests will contribute to collective innovation behavior such as brainstorming and to promote interdisciplinary cooperation.Originality/value: Recent researches on community detection devote most efforts to singlerelation researcher networks and put the main focus on the topological structure of networks. In reality, there exist multi-relation social networks. Vertex attribute also plays an important role in community detection. The present study combined multiple single-relational researcher networks into a multi-relational network and proposed a structure-attribute clustering method for detecting research community in research organizations.展开更多

Both heterogeneity of network components and the heterogeneity of individual reinforcement thresholds are considered. An information outbreak condition is derived, according to which the outbreak scale and individual density of each state under specific propagation parameters can be deduced. Monte Carlo experiments are conducted in Facebook networks to demonstrate the outbreak condition, and we find that social reinforcement effects generally inhibit the propagation of information though it contributes to the emergence of certain hot spots simultaneously. Additionally, by applying Pontryagin's Maximum Principle, we derive the optimal control strategy in the case of limited control resources to maximize the information propagation. Then the forward–backward sweep method is utilized to verify its performance with numerical simulation.展开更多

Considering the characteristic of the constrained energy and storage resources of sensors, we propose a novel two-phase multi-replica routing for DTMSN, called Energy-Aware Sociality-Based Spray and Search Routing (ESR), which implements the quota-style message replication mechanism by utilizing the energy and speed information of sensors. In addition, based on the difference of history encounters, a sociality metric is defined to improve the forwarding efficiency in search phase. Simulation experiments show that ESR can reduce the message delay and improve the resource utilization while maximizing the message delivery ratio compared with the exiting popular two-phase routing protocols.展开更多

We seek to study the cohesive properties of a culturally diverse dynamic social network. By considering a multi-agent dynamic network, we seek to model a social structure and find conditions under which cohesion and coexistence are maintained. We present a specific illustration that serves to establish the framework in which explicit sufficient conditions in terms of system parameters are found for which the network is cohesive. By utilizing Lyapunov’s Second Method and comparison equations, we are able to find such conditions for the given illustration. Further, for the illustration, we decompose the cultural state domain into invariant sets and consider the behavior of members within each set. Moreover, we analyze the relative cultural affinity between individual members relative to the center of the social network. We also demonstrate how conservative the estimates are using Euler type numerical approximation schemes based on the given illustration. We are then able to consider how changes in the various parameters affect the dynamics of the illustrated network. By gaining such insight into the behavior of the illustrated network, we are able to better understand the impact of both attractive and repulsive influences on the network. This leads to establishing a schema for helping when creating policies and practices catered to promoting both diversity and cohesion within a cultural network.展开更多
