Ship collision on bridge is a dynamic process featured by high nonlinearity and instantaneity. Calculating ship-bridge collision force typically involves either the use of design-specification-stipulated equivalent static load, or the use of finite element method (FEM) which is more time-consuming and requires supercomputing resources. In this paper, we proposed an alternative approach that combines FEM with artificial neural network (ANN). The radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) employed for calculating the impact force in consideration of ship-bridge collision mechanics. With ship velocity and mass as the input vectors and ship collision force as the output vector, the neural networks for different network parameters are trained by the learning samples obtained from finite element simulation results. The error analyses of the learning and testing samples show that the proposed RBFNN is accurate enough to calculate ship-bridge collision force. The input-output relationship obtained by the RBFNN is essentially consistent with the typical empirical formulae. Finally, a special toolbox is developed for calculation efficiency in application using MATLAB software. 展开更多

A new analytical method using Back-Propagation (BP) artificial neural network and kinetic spectrophotometry for simultaneous determination of iron and magnesium in tap water, the Yellow River water and seawater is established. By conditional experiments, the optimum analytical conditions and parameters are obtained. Levenberg-Marquart (L-M) algorithm is used for calculation in BP neural network. The topological structure of three-layer BP ANN network architecture is chosen as 15-16-2 (nodes). The initial value of gradient coefficient μ is fixed at 0.001 and the increase factor and reduction factor of μ take the default values of the system. The data are processed by computers with our own programs written in MATLAB 7.0. The relative standard deviation of the calculated results for iron and manganese is 2.30% and 2.67% respectively. The results of standard addition method show that for the tap water, the recoveries of iron and manganese are in the ranges of 98.0%-104.3% and 96.5%-104.5%, and the RSD is in the range of 0.23%-0.98%; for the Yellow River water (Lijin district of Shandong Province), the recoveries of iron and manganese are in the ranges of 96.0%-101.0% and 98.7%-104.2%, and the RSD is in the range of 0.13%-2.52%; for the seawater in Qingdao offshore, the recoveries of iron and manganese are in the ranges of 95.3%-104.8% and 95.3%-104.7%, and the RSD is in the range of 0.14%-2.66%. It is found that 21 common cations and anions do not interfere with the determination of iron and manganese under the optimum experimental conditions. This method exhibits good reproducibility and high accuracy in the determination of iron and manganese and can be used for the simultaneous determination of iron and manganese in tap water and natural water. By using the established ANN- catalytic spectrophotometric method, the iron and manganese concentrations of the surface seawater at 11 sites in Qingdao offshore are determined and the level distribution maps of iron and manganese are drawn. 展开更多

This paper presents an artificial neural network(ANN)-based response surface method that can be used to predict the failure probability of c-φslopes with spatially variable soil.In this method, the Latin hypercube sampling technique is adopted to generate input datasets for establishing an ANN model;the random finite element method is then utilized to calculate the corresponding output datasets considering the spatial variability of soil properties;and finally,an ANN model is trained to construct the response surface of failure probability and obtain an approximate function that incorporates the relevant variables. The results of the illustrated example indicate that the proposed method provides credible and accurate estimations of failure probability. As a result, the obtained approximate function can be used as an alternative to the specific analysis process in c-φslope reliability analyses. 展开更多

Determination of ballistic performance of an armor solution is a complicated task and evolved significantly with the application of finite element methods(FEM) in this research field. The traditional armor design studies performed with FEM requires sophisticated procedures and intensive computational effort, therefore simpler and accurate numerical approaches are always worthwhile to decrease armor development time. This study aims to apply a hybrid method using FEM simulation and artificial neural network(ANN) analysis to approximate ballistic limit thickness for armor steels. To achieve this objective,a predictive model based on the artificial neural networks is developed to determine ballistic resistance of high hardness armor steels against 7.62 mm armor piercing ammunition. In this methodology, the FEM simulations are used to create training cases for Multilayer Perceptron(MLP) three layer networks. In order to validate FE simulation methodology, ballistic shot tests on 20 mm thickness target were performed according to standard Stanag 4569.Afterwards,the successfully trained ANN(s) is used to predict the ballistic limit thickness of 500 HB high hardness steel armor. Results show that even with limited number of data,FEM-ANN approach can be used to predict ballistic penetration depth with adequate accuracy. 展开更多

Tsunami ran-up height is a significant parameter for dimensions of coastal structures. In the present study, tsunami run-up heights are estimated by three different Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models, i.e. Feed Forward Back Propagation (FFBP), Radial Basis Functions (RBF) and Generalized Regression Neural Network (GRNN). As the input for the ANN configuration, the wave height (H) values are employed. It is shown that the tsunami ran-up height values are closely approximated with all of the applied ANN methods. The ANN estimations are slightly superior to those of the empirical equation. It can be seen that the ANN applications are especially significant in the absence of adequate number of laboratory experiments. The results also prove that the available experiment data set can be extended with ANN simulations. This may be helpful to decrease the burden of the experimental studies and to supply results for comparisons. 展开更多

In the processes of manufacturing, MT (machine tools) plays an important role in the manufacture of work pieces with complex and high dimensional and geometric accuracy. Much of the errors of a machine tool are those which are thermally induced which are from internal and external heat sources acting on the machine. In this paper, a methodology for determining and analyzing the thermal deformation of machine tools using FEM (finite element method) and ANN (artificial neural networks) is presented. After modeling the machine using FEM is defined the location of the heat sources, it is possible to obtain the temperature gradient and the corresponding thermal deformation at predetermined periods. Results obtained with simulations using the software NX.7.5 showed that this methodology is an effective tool in determining the thermal deformation of the machine, correlating the temperature reading at strategic points with volumetric deformation at the tool tip. Therefore, the thermal analysis of the errors in the pair tool part can be established. After training and validation process, the network will be able to make the prediction of thermal errors just stating the temperature values of specific points of each heat source, providing a way for compensation of thermally induced errors. 展开更多

Land use and land cover(LULC)changes refer to alterations in land use or physical characteristics. These changes can be caused by human activities, such as urbanization, agriculture, and resource extraction,as well as natural phenomena, for example, erosion and climate change.LULC changes significantly impact ecosystem services, biodiversity, and human welfare. In this study,LULC changes in Davao City,Philippines, were simulated, predicted, and projected using a multilayer perception artificial neural network(MLP-ANN)model.The MLP-ANN model was employed to analyze the impact of elevation and proximity to road networks(i.e.,exploratory maps)on changes in LULC from 2017 to 2021.The predicted 2021 LULC map shows a high correlation to the actual LULC map of 2021,with a kappa index of 0.91 and a 96.68%accuracy.The MLP-ANN model was applied to project LULC changes in the future(i.e.,2030 and 2050).The results suggest that in 2030,the built-up area and trees are increasing by 4.50%and 2.31%,respectively.Unfortunately,water will decrease by up to 0.34%,and crops is about to decrease by approximately 3.25%.In the year 2050,the built-up area will continue to increase to 6.89%,while water and crops will decrease by 0.53%and 3.32%,respectively.Overall,the results show that anthropogenic activities influence the land’s alterations. Moreover, the study illustrates how machine learning models can generate a reliable future scenario of land usage changes. 展开更多

Esophageal disease is a common disorder of the digestive system that can severely affect the quality of life andprognosis of patients. Esophageal stenting is an effective treatment that has been widely used in clinical practice. However, esophageal stents of different types and parameters have varying adaptability and effectiveness forpatients, and they need to be individually selected according to the patient’s specific situation. The purposeof this study was to provide a reference for clinical doctors to choose suitable esophageal stents. We used 3Dprinting technology to fabricate esophageal stents with different ratios of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)/(Poly-ε-caprolactone) PCL polymer, and established an artificial neural network model that could predict the radial forceof esophageal stents based on the content of TPU, PCL and print parameter. We selected three optimal ratios formechanical performance tests and evaluated the biomechanical effects of different ratios of stents on esophagealimplantation, swallowing, and stent migration processes through finite element numerical simulation and in vitrosimulation tests. The results showed that different ratios of polymer stents had different mechanical properties, affecting the effectiveness of stent expansion treatment and the possibility of postoperative complications of stentimplantation. 展开更多

The flash points of organic compounds were estimated using a hybrid method that includes a simple group contribution method (GCM) implemented in an artificial neural network (ANN) with particle swarm optimization (PSO). Different topologies of a multilayer neural network were studied and the optimum architecture was determined. Property data of 350 compounds were used for training the network. To discriminate different substances the molecular structures defined by the concept of the classical group contribution method were given as input variables. The capabilities of the network were tested with 155 substances not considered in the training step. The study shows that the proposed GCM+ANN+PSO method represent an excellent alternative for the estimation of flash points of organic compounds with acceptable accuracy (AARD = 1.8%; AAE = 6.2 K). 展开更多

In this study, an artificial neural network (ANN) model for studying the strength properties of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) containing fly ash was devised. The mixtures were prepared with 0 wt%, 15 wt%, and 30 wt% of fly ash, at 0 vol.%, 0.5 vol.%, 1.0 vol.% and 1.5 vol.% of fiber, respectively. After being cured under the standard conditions for 7, 28, 90 and 365 d, the specimens of each mixture were tested to determine the corresponding compressive and flexural strengths. The pa- rameters such as the amounts of cement, fly ash replacement, sand, gravel, steel fiber, and the age of samples were selected as input variables, while the compressive and flexural strengths of the concrete were chosen as the output variables. The back propagation learning algorithm with three different variants, namely the Levenberg-Marquardt (LM), scaled conjugate gradient (SCG) and Fletcher-Powell conjugate gradient (CGF) algorithms were used in the network so that the best approach can be found. The results obtained from the model and the experiments were compared, and it was found that the suitable algorithm is the LM algorithm. Furthermore, the analysis of variance (ANOVA) method was used to determine how importantly the experimental parameters affect the strength of these mixtures. 展开更多

Vertical hot ring rolling(VHRR) process has the characteristics of nonlinearity,time-variation and being susceptible to disturbance.Furthermore, the ring's growth is quite fast within a short time, and the rolled ring's position is asymmetrical. All of these cause that the ring's dimensions cannot be measured directly.Through analyzing the relationships among the dimensions of ring blanks, the positions of rolls and the ring's inner and outer diameter, the soft measurement model of ring's dimensions is established based on the radial basis function neural network(RBFNN).A mass of data samples are obtained from VHRR finite element(FE) simulations to train and test the soft measurement NN model, and the model's structure parameters are deduced and optimized by genetic algorithm(GA).Finally, the soft measurement system of ring's dimensions is established and validated by the VHRR experiments. The ring's dimensions were measured artificially and calculated by the soft measurement NN model. The results show that the calculation values of GA-RBFNN model are close to the artificial measurement data.In addition, the calculation accuracy of GA-RBFNN model is higher than that of RBFNN model. The research results suggest that the soft measurement NN model has high precision and flexibility. The research can provide practical methods and theoretical guidance for the accurate measurement of VHRR process. 展开更多

Hyperspectral reflectance (350~2500 nm) data were recorded at two different sites of rice in two experiment fields including two cultivars, and three levels of nitrogen (N) application. Twenty-five Vegetation Indices (VIs) were used to predict the rice agronomic parameters including Leaf Area Index (LAI, m2 green leaf/m2 soil) and Green Leaf Chlorophyll Density (GLCD, mg chlorophyll/m2 soil) by the traditional regression models and Radial Basis Function Neural Network (RBF). RBF emerged as a variant of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) in the late 1980’s. A large variety of training algorithms has been tested for training RBF networks. In this study, Original RBF (ORBF), Gradient Descent RBF (GDRBF), and Generalized Regression Neural Network (GRNN) were employed. Results showed that green waveband Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVIgreen) and TCARI/OSAVI have the best prediction power for LAI by exponent model and ORBF respectively, and that TCARI/OSAVI has the best prediction power for GLCD by exponent model and GDRBF. The best performances of RBF are compared with the traditional models, showing that the relationship between VIs and agronomic variables are further improved when RBF is used. Compared with the best traditional models, ORBF using TCARI/OSAVI improves the prediction power for LAI by lowering the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) for 0.1119, and GDRBF using TCARI/OSAVI improves the prediction power for GLCD by lowering the RMSE for 26.7853. It is concluded that RBF provides a useful exploratory and predictive tool when applied to the sensitive VIs. 展开更多

For improving the calculation precision, a solitary wave run-up calculation model was established based on artificial neural networks in this study. A back-propagation (BP) network with one hidden layer was adopted and modified with the additional momentum method and the auto-adjusting learning factor. The model was applied to calculation of solitary wave run-up. The correlation coefficients between the neural network model results and the experimental values was 0.996 5. ANNs (Artificial neural networks) are used extensively in remote sensing image processing. It has been proven that BPNNs (back-propagation neural networks) have high attainable classification accuracy. However, there is a noticeable variation in the achieved accuracies due to different network designs and implementations. Hence, researchers usually need to conduct several experimental trials before they can finalize the network design. This is a time consuming process which significantly reduces the effectiveness of using BPNNs and the final design may still not be optimal. Therefore, there is a need to see whether there are some common guidelines for effective design and implementation of BPNNs. With this aim in mind, this paper attempts to find and summarize the common guidelines suggested by different authors through literature review and discussion of the findings. To provide readers with background and contextual information, some ANN fundamentals are also introduced. 展开更多
