A required finite element method(FEM) model applicable for narrow gap CMT and CMT+P MIX welding was established based on the interactions between arc, base metal and filler metal.A novel method of simplifying wire feeding pulses and heat input pulses was supposed under the conduction of equivalent input. The method together with composed double-ellipse heat sources was included in the model. The model was employed in the investigation of thermal cycling and the identification of the softened zone of AA7A52 base plates.Low-frequency behavior emerged in the form of low-cooling rate sects, which were not expected under experimental conditions. The softened zone including the quenched zone and averaging zone of the base plate was much wider internal the base plate than that close to the surfaces. The reliability of the predictions in thermal cycling was supported by infrared imaging test results of the thermal cycle process. 展开更多

Using the Gleeble 3500 thermal-mechanical system to simulate thermal cycles with different peak temperatures, the hardness and microstructure in the heat-affected zones of two kinds of 100 kg class hot-rolled extra-high-strength steel were compared. When the peak temperature of the thermal cycle was 800℃ ,incomplete transformation occurred during quenching in both steels, and massive martensite and bainite grains were formed. The hardness was determined by the composition and distribution of the microstructure. The concentration of massive martensite was low, and hence the hardness was low,in steel #1. Conversely, the massive martensite content in steel #2 was high and uniformly distributed, resulting in a high hardness. These findings can provide a reference for improving the mechanical properties in the softened zone. 展开更多

Mouthguard thickness is affected by the softened state of the sheet during thermoforming. The aim of this study is to establish an effective method for controlling the softened state of the sheet to prevent the mouthguard thickness from decreasing during mouthguard fabrication using a vacuum-forming machine. Mouthguards were thermoformed using an ethylene-vinyl acetate sheet (thickness: 4.0 mm) and a vacuum-forming machine. The working model was trimmed to the anterior height of 25 mm and the posterior height of 20 mm. The following two heating methods were compared: 1) the sheet was formed when it sagged 15 mm below the level of the sheet frame at the top of the post (condition T);and 2) the sheet frame was lowered to and heated at 50 mm below its usual height and the sheet was formed when it sagged 15 mm below the level of the sheet frame (condition L). For each heating method, the vacuum was applied immediately (T0, L0) or 5 s (T5, L5) after the sheet frame was lowered to the forming unit. The sheet surface temperature immediately before the vacuum was applied under each condition was measured. The differences in mouthguard thickness due to forming conditions were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Bonferroni’s multiple comparison tests. The temperature difference between the center and the posterior depending on the condition decreased in the order T0 > T5 > L0 > L5, and that was 20°C or higher for T0 and T5, and 10°C or less for L0 and L5. At the incisal edge and the cusp, L0 and L5 were significantly thicker than T0. No significant differences were observed between conditions L0 and L5 at any measurement points. For the labial and buccal surfaces, significant differences in thicknesses among all conditions, except L0 and L5, were observed and were in the order T0 < T5 < L0 and L5. This study was suggested that the lowering the sheet frame and heating was more effective than adjusting the vacuum timing for uniform softening of the sheet. 展开更多

A modelling approach consisting of best-fit relations to estimate the post-yield strength parameters is presented for simulating post-peak behavior beyond the point of residual strength of coal pillars having different w/h ratios. The model was developed based on back-analysis of the complete stress-strain behavior of specimens belonging to six different Indian coal seams with different w/h ratios of 0.5 e13.5.It was found that the simultaneous degradation of the cohesion and friction angle of the Mohr-Coulomb rock material characterizes the post-peak strength behavior of the rock. The resulting expressions are simplistic as they require parameters that can be easily determined using uniaxial and triaxial compression results.Eventually, the developed model was validated by simulating the triaxial tests of coal specimens with different sizes under varying confining stresses and comparing its findings with the published test results. The study showed that its implementation in the numerical model could reproduce laboratory-observed mechanical response, deformation behavior, and failure mechanism very closely. 展开更多

The rhombohedralα-GeTe can be approximated as a slightly distorted rock-salt structure along its[111]direction and possesses superb thermoelectric performance. However, the role of such a ferroelectric-like structural distortion on its transport properties remains unclear.Herein,we performed a systematic study on the crystal structure and electronic band structure evolutions of Ge_(1-x)Sn_(x)Te alloys where the degree of ferroelectric distortion is continuously tuned. It is revealed that the band gap is maximized while multiple valence bands are converged at x=0.6,where the ferroelectric distortion is the least but still works.Once undistorted, the band gap is considerably reduced, and the valence bands are largely separated again. Moreover, near the ferro-to-paraelectric phase transition Curie temperature, the lattice thermal conductivity reaches its minima because of significant lattice softening enabled by ferroelectric instability. We predict a peak ZT value of 2.6 at 673 K inα-GeTe by use of proper dopants which are powerful in suppressing the excess hole concentrations but meanwhile exert little influence on the ferroelectric distortion. 展开更多

The low-cycle fatigue behavior of solutionized(T4)and aged(T6)WE43 magnesium alloys was studied at room temperature. The total strain amplitudes(△ε_(t)/2)were 0.4%,0.5%,0.6%,0.7%and 1.0%.Detailed microstructure evolution was characterized by scanning electron microscope(SEM),electron backscattered diffraction(EBSD)and transmission electron microscopy(TEM).The results showed that plastic strain amplitude decreased with the increasing cycle number in T4 alloy, which is due to the dense persistent slip bands(PSBs)and dynamic precipitates hinderingdislocation slip.In contrast, the plastic strain amplitude increases gradually in T6 alloy, which is attributed to the enhanced activation of pyramidal slip. The low-cycle fatigue life of T6 alloy with larger fatigue ductility coefficient is longer than that of T4 alloy. The Coffin-Manson model can accurately predict the fatigue life of T4 and T6 alloys compared to Jahed-Varvani(JV)energy model. For T4 alloy, the fatigue damage mechanism was dominated by basal slip. For T6 alloy, the enhanced pyramidal slip plays an important role to accommodate plastic deformation. 展开更多

Despite extensive research on postharvest fruit softening, its precise molecular mechanisms remain elusive. To enhance our comprehension of the underlying molecular factors, we initially identified differentially expressed genes(DEGs) by comparing the transcriptomes of folic acid(FA)-treated and water-treated(CK) berries at different time points. We then analyzed the sequences to detect alternatively spliced(AS) genes associated with postharvest softening. A total of 2,559 DEGs were identified and categorized into four subclusters based on their expression patterns, with subcluster-4 genes exhibiting higher expression in the CK group compared with the FA treatment group. There were 1,045 AS-associated genes specific to FA-treated berries and 1,042 in the CK-treated berries, respectively. Gene Ontology(GO) annotation indicated that the AS-associated genes in CK-treated berries were predominantly enriched in cell wall metabolic processes, particularly cell wall degradation processes. Through a comparison between treatment-associated AS genes and subcluster-4 DEGs, we identified eight genes, including Pectinesterase 2(VvPE2, Vitvi15g00704), which encodes a cell wall-degrading enzyme and was predicted to undergo an A3SS event. The reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction further confirmed the presence of a truncated transcript variant of VvPE2 in the FA-treated berries. Our study provides a comprehensive analysis of AS events in postharvest grape berries using transcriptome sequencing and underscores the pivotal role of VvPE2 during the postharvest storage of grape berries. 展开更多

It has long been hypothesized that an increase in the extracellular matrix(ECM)stiffness mechanoactivates malignant phenotypes of breast tumor cells by regulating an array of processes underlying cancer biology.Although the contribution of substrate stiffening to drive malignant phenotype traits and other biological functions of a tumor is increasingly understood, the functional role of substrate softening on breast cancer cellular responses has rarely been investigated.Herein,we employed matrix metalloproteinase(MMP)-sensitive film to perform assays to explore the consequences of lowering stiffness on the biological behaviors of breast cancer cell MDA-MB-231.We demonstrated that cells underwent dramatic changes in migration, cellular conjunction, and expression of malignance-associated proteins and genes when the substrate stiffness decreased.Based on RNA sequencing and analysis,we found that hub genes including TP53,CCND1,MYC,CTNNB1,and YAP were validated to play central parts in regulating stiffness-dependent cellular manner change. Moreover, through visualization of differentially expressed genes(DEGs),cells on dynamically softened substrate appeared less influenced by transfer to tissue culture polystyrene(TCPS).These results suggest substrates with decreasing stiffness could normalize breast tumor malignant phenotype and help cells store the mechanical memory of the consequential weaker malignance. 展开更多

The slope stability of Ya’an expressway in Sichuan dominated by mudstone strata,is influenced greatly by both the mechanical properties and stressstrain relationship of mudstone. In this paper, the mechanical properties of the Ya’an mudstone samples under triaxial compression conditions were studied, based on an established constitutive model under the framework of breakage mechanics to simulate the mechanical properties of mudstone.Firstly, triaxial compression tests and SEM tests at the confining pressures of 0.5 MPa,1.0 MPa,and 2.0 MPa were carried out on the mudstone samples, and it was found that the mudstone sample undergoes strain softening and dilatancy followed by the volumetric compaction. Then, based on analysis on the breakage mechanism of the above test results,we idealized the mudstone sample as a binary medium material consisting of the bonded elements and frictional elements,of which the bonded elements are composed of solid matrix and pores, and the frictional elements are composed of broken aggregates.During the loading process, the cementation between clay minerals and non-clay minerals in the mudstone sample is first destroyed, leading to the formation of micro-cracks within the particle aggregate, that is,the bonded elements are gradually damaged during the loading process and gradually turned into the frictional elements, and the two jointly bear the external load. The bonded elements are composed of mudstone matrix and pores, which have the cementitious characteristics of mudstone, and the frictional elements are composed of the broken aggregate with the frictional characteristics of the broken particles.Based on the homogenization theory, the constitutive model for the mudstone is established, and the determining method for model parameters is also given. Finally, the results of the triaxial compression tests of the mudstone samples are predicted by the constitutive model proposed here, which can reflect the main mechanical properties of the mudstone samples. 展开更多

Fruit development and ripening is a complex procedure(Malus×domestica Borkh.)and can be caused by various factors such as cell structure, cell wall components, and cell wall hydrolytic enzymes. In our study,we focused on the variations in fruit firmness, cell wall morphology and components, the activity of cell wall hydrolytic enzymes and the expression patterns of associated genes during fruit development in two different types of apple cultivars, the hard-crisp cultivar and the loose-crisp cultivar. In this paper, the aim was to find out the causes of the texture variations between the different type cultivars.Cell wall materials(CWMs),hemicellulose and cellulose content were strongly associated with variations in fruit firmness during the fruit development. The content of water soluble pectin(WSP)and chelator soluble pectin(CSP)gradually increased, while the content of ionic soluble pectin(ISP)showed inconsistent trends in the four cultivars. The activities of polygalacturonase(PG),β-galactosidase(β-gal),cellulase(CEL),and pectate lyase(PL)gradually increased in four cultivars. And the activities of PG,β-gal,and CEL were higher in‘Fuji’and‘Honeycrisp’fruit with the fruit development, while the activity of PL of‘Fuji’and‘Honeycrisp’was lower than that of‘ENVY’and‘Modi’.Both four cultivars of fruit cells progressively became bigger as the fruit expanded, with looser cell arrangements and larger cell gaps.According to the qRT-PCR,the relative expression levels of MdACO and Mdβ-gal were notably enhanced. Our study showed that there were large differences in the content of ISP and hemicellulose, the activity of PL and the relative expression of Mdβ-gal between two different types of apple cultivars, and these differences might be responsible for the variations in the texture of the four cultivars. 展开更多

Magnesium alloys are ideal lightweight materials;however, their applications are extremely limited due to their low strength, poor ductility, and weak corrosion resistance. In the present study,a friction stir processing(FSP)treatment was employed to optimize the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of an as-cast Mg-5Zn alloy. The average grain size of the Mg-5Zn alloy was refined from 133.8μm to1.3μm as a result of FSP.Along different directions,FSP exhibited the enhancement effects on different mechanical properties.Furthermore, according to the potentiodynamic polarization results, the corrosion current density at the free-corrosion potential of the FSPed sample, was 4.1×10^(-6)A/cm^(2)in 3.5 wt.%Na Cl aqueous solution, which was significantly lower than that of the as-cast sample.Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed that the polarization impedance,Rp,of the FSPed sample was 1534Ω/cm^(2)in 3.5 wt.%NaCl aqueous solution, which was 71.4%greater than that of the as-cast sample. The corrosion morphology of the FSPed sample in 3.5 wt.%NaCl aqueous solution exhibited largely uniform corrosion, rather than severe localized corrosion characteristics, which further reduced the corrosion depth on the basis of reducing the corrosion current density. The results presented herein indicate that FSP is a viable technique for simultaneously improving the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the as-cast Mg-5Zn alloy. 展开更多

Flow softening behavior of a homogenized Mg-7Gd-4Y-1Nd-0.5Zr alloy under compression to a final strain of∼1.8 at elevated temperatures of 450∼550℃ and a constant strain rate of 2s^(−1) has been investigated by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, electron back-scattered diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The results show that true stress first rises to the peak point and then drops to the bottom value and increases again with further increasing strain at each temperature.Twinning dynamic recrystallization(DRX)and continuous DRX contribute to the formation of new fine grains at temperatures 450∼475℃ when the restoration is caused by both DRX and texture change due to extension twinning, resulting in the larger softening degrees compared with the softening effects owing to continuous DRX and discontinuous DRX at 500∼550℃ when twinning activation is suppressed.500℃ is the transition temperature denoting a significant decline in the contribution of twinning and TDRX to the strain with increasing temperature. The cuboid-shape phase exists in both homogenized and compressed samples, while the compositions are varied. 展开更多

In this research, the quality of the wastewater discharged into the environment has been investigated. The effluent from solar desalination pond contains large amounts of TDS (3.68 grams per liter) and TH (6.50 grams per liter). Since the use of filter is not economical in this case, three types of commercial coagulants such as aluminum sulfate, ferric chloride and ferric sulfide have been used in this study. The main parameters such as effectiveness of three inorganic coagulants, ammonium sulfate, ferric sulfate, and ferric chloride, which separately help to remove hardness, have been studied. According to the results, using laboratory test, 25/g of ferric sulfate as coagulant is best coagulant mass and the ratio of 4 to 3 for auxiliary coagulant (sodium carbonate and sodium hydroxide) to coagulant will be best ratio. Also, the mixing rate of 120 rpm in the first reactor will give the best mixing speed. These conditions will lead to 0.348 grams per liter of TDS, 0.345 grams per liter of TH and 0.195 grams per liter of calcium hardness and 300 micro Siemens electrical conductivity of the purified sample. 展开更多

There are numerous methods and additives available to improve the durability and quality of road bitumen. A coal tar obtained by coal coking was distilled in a laboratory into fractions of initial boiling point IBP-180℃ (gasoline-like fuel), 180℃ - 360℃ (diesel-like fuel), and >360℃ (residue or coal tar pitch). The coal tar pitch was added into road bitumen by up to 1 - 5 wt% and investigated the alteration of physical and chemical properties. The physico-mechanical properties of coal tar pitch and bitumen blends, as well as the chemical group composition, were determined using standard techniques (MNS) and the SARA method, respectively. Results of 3% coal tar pitch addition into bitumen enhanced ductility by 12.4% and softening point by 1.6℃. We found that blending with bitumen coal tar pitch as a modifier could improve bitumen properties. 展开更多

The flow stress behavior and microstructure development of Al-5Zn-2Mg (7005) aluminum alloy were studied by hot compression tests at deformation temperatures between 300-500 °C and strain rates between 0.05-50 s-1. The deformed structures of the samples were observed by optical microscopy (OM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD) analysis. The calculated activation energy is 147 kJ/mol, which is very close to the activation energy for lattice self-diffusion in aluminum (142 kJ/mol). Dynamic recovery is the dominant restoration mechanism during the deformation. At high strain rate of 50 s-1, temperature rise due to deformation heating leads to a significant flow softening. Microstructure observations indicated that the remaining softening after deformation heating correction at high strain rate and the softening observed at high temperature are associated with grain coarsening induced by grain boundary migration during dynamic recovery process. 展开更多

The expressions of strain hardening rate, dynamic recrystallization critical stress, saturated stress, dynamic recovery volume fraction and dynamic recrystallization volume fraction were determined. According to the processing map, the instability regions occur in regions of 400?450 °C, 0.001?0.05 s?1 and 450?750 °C, 0.05?1 s?1. The deformation mechanism in the stability region is dynamic recrystallization. The flow stress was predicted. Liang et A. R. Ferguson cv. Bruno) was used toinvestigate the effects of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA, 1.0 mmol/L, pH 3.5) and ethylene (100 mL/L) treat-ments on changes at endogenous salicylic acid (SA) levels and other senescence-related factors duringfruit ripening and softening at 20 ℃. The level of endogenous SA in ripening fruits declined and a closerelationship was observed between the change at endogenous SA level and the rate of fruit ripening andsoftening. ASA treatment elevated SA level in the fruit, slowed down the increases in lipoxygenase (LOX)and allene oxide synthase (AOS) activities, decreased the O22-. production in the preclimacteric phase andthe early phase of ethylene climacteric rise, maintained the stability of cell membrane, inhibited ethylenebiosynthesis, postponed the onset of the ethylene climacteric, and delayed the process of fruit ripeningand softening. On the contrary, application of ethylene to ripening kiwifruit resulted at a lower SA level, anaccelerated increases in the activities of LOX and AOS and the rate of O22-. production, an elevated relativeelectric conductivity and an advanced onset of ethylene climacteric, and a quicker fruit ripening andsoftening. It is suggested that the effects of ASA on ripening kiwifruit can be attributed to its ability toscavenge O22-. and/or to maintain stability of cell membrane. 展开更多

The effect of electrolyte on settling behavior of kaolinite was studied. Effects of hard water on selective flocculation of diasporic bauxite was tested and the measures were taken to eliminate the effects of Ca2+ and Mg2+ in hard water. The results indicated that, not only the concentration of electrolyte ions but also the ionic valence of the electrolyte ions affects the settling behavior of kaolinite; hard water significantly affects its selective flocculation owing to Ca2+ and Mg2+; general dispersants could not eliminate the effects of Ca2+ and Mg2+. Self-made softening agent in our lab could weaken or eliminate the effects of hard water on flocculation processes. The results of molecular dynamics simulation show that softening agent molecules could restrict Ca2+ and prevent them from playing their roles, so as to eliminate the effects. The continuous pilot experiment results of bauxite flocculation were even better than those obtained in laboratory. 展开更多

The styrene-butadiene-styrene(SBS) modified bitumens with different contents of SBS modifiers are stored in different conditions to study the storage stability of SBS modified bitumen.Mixed-level orthogonal array design(OAD) is used and factors such as SBS modifier content, storage time, storage temperature and container size are chosen in a mixed-level OAD with an OA16(31×44) matrix.Parameters like the separation softening point difference(the separation difference of the ring and ball softening point of the top and bottom samples) and the average softening point(the arithmetic mean of the softening points of the top and bottom samples) are proposed to evaluate the separation and the ageing of modified bitumen during storage in this experiment, respectively. The results reveal that the separation and the ageing during storage exhibit a complicated variation for storage temperature and time. The separation softening point difference decreases with the storage temperature rising from 20 to 120 ℃ and increases with the temperature exceeding 120 ℃,and the average softening point drops with the storage time being prolonged.Different storage conditions have various effects on the storage stability of SBS modified bitumen. 展开更多
