The heliocentric distance is one factor influencing the solar radiation pressure force exerted on solar sails. In addition, the solar radiation pressure force is also related to the solar sail orientation with respect to the sunlight direction. For an ideal flat solar sail, the cone angle between the sail normal and the sunlight direction determines the magnitude and direction of solar radiation pressure force. In general, the cone angle can change from 0°to 90°. However, in practical applications,a large cone angle may reduce the efficiency of solar radiation pressure force and there is a strict requirement on the attitude control. Usually, the cone angle range is restricted less more than an acute angle(for example, not more than40°) in engineering practice. In this paper, the time-optimal transfer trajectory is designed over a restricted range of the cone angle, and an indirect method is used to solve the two point boundary value problem associated to the optimal control problem. Relevant numerical examples are provided to compare with the case of an unrestricted case, and the effects of different maximum restricted cone angles are discussed. The results indicate that(1) for the condition of a restricted cone-angle range the transfer time is longer than that for the unrestricted case and(2) the optimal transfer time increases as the maximum restricted cone angle decreases.展开更多

The study comprises the period from March 1998 to November 2003, for which daily means were compared. Both series describe correlated, but different, phenomena and, consequently, before a correlation study, an individual analysis of each data set was necessary. One of the motivations of the present work was to further explore the correlation with lags found between the solar semi-diameter and some solar activity estimators, which supports the probabilistic forecasting of the solar activity and hence, of the solar driven geomagnetic variations.展开更多

One of possible solutions is the energy storage technology, especially the battery storage system. The large-scale energy storage system is available to support power system reliable flexibility for load following and system frequency regulation. In this paper, the bottlenecks of large-scale solar power generation dispatching and operation in Qinghai grid are discussed, and a new PV-energy storage coordinated dispatching method is proposed for reduction of PV curtailment in Qinghai. Moreover, the validation based on the time-series production simulation is provided using real data from Qinghai. The results indicate that the proposed method can effectively decrease the curtailment of solar power and future vision of large-scale solar power coordinated operation with energy storage system is also presented.展开更多

Resulting travel times anomaly shows variations less than 10-3 seconds to and from Venus and Mars while Sun provides anomaly travel times of about -2 × 10-2 sec as backward signal needs more times than emitted signal from Earth. In the current explorations on Mars, the travel time anomaly may reach 1.8 × 10-4 sec as orbital Mars position pass through its minimum distance with respect to Earth. Implications of the difference between one and two-way travel times may be related to redshift/blueshift while travel time of received signal is less or greater than emitted signal.展开更多

Three indices are defined in this work for assessing the complementarity of solar and wind resources for energy production. Based on existing data of solar radiation and wind speed, these complementarity indices were calculated and represented in the form of maps for the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in southern Brazil. The results found suggest that there are some areas of the state where the use of hybrid wind-solar power systems could be more effective than single photovoltaic or wind systems.展开更多

The fundamental solar trigonometric model has been modified to estimate daily and hourly solar radiation on horizontal surfaces on the basis of the more readily available meteorological data. The results demonstrate that Kuwait has an abundance of solar energy capability. An overview of the production and consumption of electrical energy, installed capacity, and peak loads in Kuwait is also presented. Finally, it is shown how the power produced from the photovoltaic (PV) cells depends on the solar radiation. The proposed PV module is made up of a combination of series and parallel cells to increase power, while the I-V characteristic and output power of the module each month may be obtained from the model.展开更多

A flare paradigm is discussed that includes the electromotive force(EMF) as the driver of the flare, and the flare-associated current that links different regions where magnetic reconnection, electron acceleration, the acceleration of mass motions and current closure occur. The EMF becomes localized across regions where energy conversion occurs, and is involved in energy propagation between these regions.展开更多

We have taken interplanetary solar wind data at the instant of Dst minimum. Our study consists of 200 geomagnetic storms weighed by disturbance storm time (Dst) -50 nT, observed during solar cycle 23. The study suggests that the strength of the geomagnetic storm is strongly dependent on the total magnetic field Btotal. The correlation (-0.72) has been found reasonable. In perspective of previous studies, the strength of the geomagnetic storm is strongly dependent on the southward component (Bz) whereas in present study exposes that the correlation (0.22) is weak. This result indicates that solar wind southward magnetic field component Bz has significant growth particularly before the main phase of geomagnetic storm (not during the main phase). The present result implies that neither density nor temperature is significantly related to the variation of geomagnetic disturbance;rather the effects of the pressure and speed. However, a low plasma beta during highly geoeffective event seems to be an important criterion.展开更多

Results showed significant differences between changes in diurnal characteristics of ESR and sap flow in sunny days during three seasons. Starting times of sap flow occurred generally 1.5–3 hours later than those of solar radiation and there were small differences between Platycladus orientalis and Pinus tabulaeformis. But peak times and stopping times of sap flow varied con-siderably with large contrasts in ESR. The duration of sap flow showed clear differences among the seasons owing to the variable rhythms of climate factors in Beijing. Fluctuation amplitude in the duration of sap flow remained relatively stable during the autumn but changed greatly during spring and summer. Changes in diurnal sap flow velocity of both Platycladus orientalis and Pinus tabu-laeformis were about 0–3 hours later than those of ESR but with the same configuration. The start of sap flow was mainly induced by the sudden intensification of ESR (sunrise effect). Seasonal models of SFV indicated that a cubic equation had the best fit. It was more practical to simulate seasonal water consumption models of trees with ESR. In further investigations, these models should be optimized.展开更多
