The dense solid-phase governing equations for two-phase flows are obtained by using the kinetic theory of gas molecules.Assuming that the solid-phase velocity distributions obey the Maxwell equations, the collision term for particles under dense two-phase flow conditions is also derived. In comparison with the governing equations of a dilute two-phase flow, the solid-particle's governing equations are developed for a dense turbulent solid-liquid flow by adopting some relevant terms from the dilute two-phase governing equations.Based on Cauchy-Helmholtz theorem and Smagorinsky model, a second-order dynamic sub-grid-scale(SGS)model,in which the sub-grid-scale stress is a function of both the strain-rate tensor and the rotation-rate tensor,is proposed to model the two-phase governing equations by applying dimension analyses.Applying the SIMPLEC algorithm and staggering grid system to the two-phase discretized governing equations and employing the slip boundary conditions on the walls, the velocity and pressure fields, and the volumetric concentration are calculated. The simulation results are in a fairly good agreement with experimental data in two operating cases in a conduit with a rectangular cross-section and these comparisons imply that these models are practical. 展开更多

A second-order moment two-phase turbulence model for simulating dense gas-particle flows (USM-Θ model), combining the unified second-order moment twophase turbulence model for dilute gas-particle flows with the kinetic theory of particle collision, is proposed. The interaction between gas and particle turbulence is simulated using the transport equation of two-phase velocity correlation with a two-time-scale dissipation closure. The proposed model is applied to simulate dense gas-particle flows in a horizontal channel and a downer. Simulation results and their comparison with experimental results show that the model accounting for both anisotropic particle turbulence and particle-particle collision is obviously better than models accounting for only particle turbulence or only particle-particle collision. The USM-Θ model is also better than the k-ε-kp-Θ model and the k-ε-kp-εp-Θ model in that the first model can simulate the redistribution of anisotropic particle Reynolds stress components due to inter-particle collision, whereas the second and third models cannot. 展开更多

Chokes are one of the most important components of downhole flow-control equipment. The particle erosion mathematical model, which considers particle-particle interaction, was established and used to simulate solid particle movement as well as particle erosion characteristics of the solid-liquid two-phase flow in a choke. The corresponding erosion reduction approach by setting ribs on the inner wall of the choke was advanced. This mathematical model includes three parts: the flow field simulation of the continuous carrier fluid by an Eulerian approach, the particle interaction simulation using the discrete particle hard sphere model by a Lagrangian approach and calculation of erosion rate using semiempirical correlations. The results show that particles accumulated in a narrow region from inlet to outlet of the choke and the dominating factor affecting particle motion is the fluid drag force. As a result, the optimization of rib geometrical parameters indicates that good anti-erosion performance can be achieved by four ribs, each of them with a height (H) of 3 mm and a width (B) of 5 mm equaling the interval between ribs (L). 展开更多

There are contradicted opinions on whether bubbles enhance or reduce the liquid turbulence. In this paper, the effect of void fraction and inlet velocity on the bubble-liquid two-phase turbulence of the multiple bubble-liquid jets in a two-dimensional channel is studied by using the two-phase second-order moment turbulence model. The results confirm the phenomena observed in experiments and reported in references that at a low void fraction and low inlet velocities the bubbles enhance the liquid turbulence, whereas at a high void fraction and high inlet velocities the bubbles reduce the liquid turbulence. 展开更多

An improved large eddy simulation using a dynamic second-order sub-grid-scale (SGS) stress model has been developed to model the governing equations of dense turbulent particle-liquid two-phase flows in a rotating coordinate system, and continuity is conserved by a mass-weighted method to solve the filtered governing equations. In the cur- rent second-order SGS model, the SGS stress is a function of both the resolved strain-rate and rotation-rate tensors, and the model parameters are obtained from the dimensional consistency and the invariants of the strain-rate and the rotation-rate tensors. In the numerical calculation, the finite volume method is used to discretize the governing equations with a staggered grid system. The SIMPLEC algorithm is applied for the solution of the discretized governing equations. Body- fitted coordinates are used to simulate the two-phase flows in complex geometries. Finally the second-order dynamic SGS model is successfully applied to simulate the dense turbu-lent particle-liquid two-phase flows in a centrifugal impeller. The predicted pressure and velocity distributions are in good agreement with experimental results. 展开更多

A modified diffusion flux model (DFM) was developed to analyze turbulent multi-dimensional gas-particle two-phase flows. In the model, the solid particles move in a modified acceleration field, g′′ , which includes the effects of various forces on the particles as if all the forces have the same effect on the particles as the gravity. The accelerations due to various forces are then taken into account in the calcula- tion of the diffusion velocities of the solid particles in the gas-particle two-phase flow. The DFM was used to numerically simulate the gas-solid two-phase flow behind a vertical backward-facing step. The numerical simulation compared well with experimental data and numerical results using both the k-ε-Ap and k-ε-kp two- fluid models available in the literature. The comparison shows that the modified diffusion flux model correctly simulates the turbulent gas-particle two-phase flow. 展开更多

In connection with the specific features of high velocity aerated flow generated by hydraulic engineering structures, the mathematical model is developed for high turbulence air-water two-phase flow with the use of twin flow theoretical model in this paper. Furthermore the numerical method is proposed to treat bubbled flows. In addition, on the basis of air-water stratified twin flow model, the new calculation methods and free surface tracking technique are proposed to describe complicated movements of the free surface. Finally, the proposed model is used to calculate artificial aerated flows. The computed results coincide quite well with experimental results. This means that the proposed method can provide solid basis for practical engineering design. 展开更多

A three-dimensional k-ε-Ap solid-liquid two-phase two-fluid model with the effect of vegetation is solved numerically with a finite-volume method on an adaptive grid to study water-sediment movements and bed evolution in vegetated channels. The additional drag force and additional turbulence generation due to vegetation are added to the relevant control equations for simulating the interaction between vegetation and flow. The flow structure and the bed-topography changes in a 60° partly vegetated channel bend are calculated by the model. The numerical results agree well with the measured ones. Calculated and measured results show that the primary flow velocity reduces much in the vegetation zone and increases in the non-vegetation zone, the secondary flow velocity weakens in the vegetation zone and strengthens in the non-vegetation zone, the sediment movement and bed-topography change also weaken in the vegetation zone and strengthen in the non-vegetation zone, a well-planed vegetation arrangement can improve bank stabilization program, and the k-ε-Ap model can deal with bed-load transport with a more reasonable method than the one-fluid model. 展开更多

The kinetic theory of molecular gases was used to derive the governing equations for dense solid-liquid two-phase flows from a microscopic flow characteristics viewpoint by multiplying the Boltzmann equation for each phase by property parameters and integrating over the velocity space. The particle collision term was derived from microscopic terms by comparison with dilute two-phase flow but with consideration of the collisions between particles for dense two-phase flow conditions and by assuming that the particle-phase velocity distribution obeys the Maxwell equations. Appropriate terms from the dilute two-phase governing equations were combined with the dense particle collision term to develop the governing equations for dense solid-liquid turbulent flows. The SIMPLEC algorithm and a staggered grid system were used to solve the discretized two-phase governing equations with a Reynolds averaged turbulence model. Dense solid-liquid turbulent two-phase flows were simulated for flow in a duct. The simulation results agree well with experimental data. 展开更多

Present two-phase turbulence models for two-fluid modeling are isotropic. However, turbulence in actual gas-particle flows is not isotropic. Moreover, in these models the two-phase velocity correlation is closed using dimensional analysis, leading to discrepancies between the numerical results, theoretical analysis and experiments. To rectify this problem, some two-phase turbulence models were proposed by the authors and are applied to simulate dense gas-particle flows in downers, risers, and horizontal channels; Experimental results validate the simulation results. Among these models the USM-O and the two-scale USM models are shown to give a better account of both anisotropic particle turbulence and particle-particle collision using the transport equation model for the two-phase velocity correlation. 展开更多

The separation efficiency and pressure drop are the most important parameters to evaluate the performance of processing system. In the simulations, the flow behavior of gas and particles within a square cyclone separator is simulated by means of computational fluid dynamics. The RNG k- ε model and the Reynolds stress model( RSM) are used to model gas turbulence. The flow behavior is examined in the term of tangential velocity components, static pressure and pressure drop contour plots for flow field and solid volume fraction. The effects of the turbulence model and solid volume fraction on the square cyclone are discussed. The results indicate that the pressure drop increases with the increase of solid volume fraction, and increase with the increase of inlet velocities for two turbulence models, moreover, the simulations results are compared with pressure field. For all runs, the RSM model gives a higher pressure drop compared to the RNG k- ε model. The RSM model provides well the forced vortex and free vortex, and captures better the phenomena occurring during intense vortex flow in the presence of walls within cyclone separators. 展开更多

This work extends the sediment-laden mixture model with consideration of the turbulence damping and particle wake effects under the framework of improved efficiency and accuracy. The mixture model consists of the continuity and momentum equations for the sediment-laden mixture, and the continuity equation for the sediment.A theoretical formula is derived for the relative velocity between the water and sediment phases, with consideration of the effects of the pressure gradient, the shear stress and the lift force.A modified expression of the particle wake effect, inducing the local turbulence enhancement around the sediment particle,is employed to improve the turbulent diffusion of the coarse sediment. The k_(m)-ε_(m) model is proposed to close the mixture turbulence, with the turbulence damping effect due to the high sediment concentration expressed by the density-stratification term without an empirical parameter. The k_(m)-ε_(m) turbulence model requires smaller computational work and offers better results than an empirical density-stratification turbulence model in high sediment concentration cases.Consequently, with the proposed mixture model, the sediment transport in the open channel under a wide range of sediment sizes and concentrations can be revealed with the results in good agreement with experimental data for the velocity, the sediment concentration and the turbulent kinetic energy. 展开更多

In this study,an inverse-problem method was applied to estimate the solid concentration in a solid-liquid two-phase flow.An algebraic slip mixture model was introduced to solve the forward problem of solid-liquid convective heat transfer. The time-average conservation equations of mass, momentum, energy,as well as the volume fraction equation were computed in a computational fluid dynamics(CFD)simulation. The solid concentration in the CFD model was controlled using an external program that included the inversion iteration, and an optimal estimation was performed via experimental measurements.Experiments using a fly-ash-water mixture and sand-water mixture with different solid concentrations in a horizontal pipeline were conducted to verify the accuracy of the inverse-problem method. The estimated results were rectified using a method based on the relationship between the estimated results and estimation error;consequently, the accuracy of the corrected inversion results improved significantly. After a verification through experiments, the inverse-problem method was concluded to be feasible for predicting the solid concentration,as the estimation error of the corrected results was within 7%for all experimental samples for a solid concentration of less than 50%.The inverse-problem method is expected to provide accurate predictions of the solid concentration in solid-liquid two-phase flow systems. 展开更多

The USM-θ model of power law fluid for dense two-phase turbulent flow was developed, which combines the unified second-order moment model for two-phase turbulence with the particle kinetic theory for the inter-particle collision. This model was used to simulate the turbulent flow of power law fluid single-phase in pipe. It is shown that the USM- θ model has better prediction result than the κf -κf - κ- εp -θ model. The USM-O model was then used to simulate the dense two-phase turbulent up flow of power law fluid with particles. With the increase of the flow exponent, the velocities of power law fluid and particles increase near the pipe centre. Comparison between the two-phase flow of power law fluid-particle and of liquid-particle indicates that the axial fluctuation velocity of fluid phase and particle phase in liquid-particle two-phase flow is smaller than that in the power law fluid two-phase flow, but the two-phase velocities of power law fluid-particle and liquid-particle are close to each other. 展开更多
