In order to improve the Power Quality(PQ)of traction power supply system and reduce the power rating and operation cost of compensator,a Static VAR Compensator(SVC)integrated Railway Power Conditioner(RPC)is presented in this paper.RPC is a widely used device in the AC electrified railway systems to enhance the PQ indices of the main network. The next generation of this equipment is Active Power Quality Compensator(APQC).The major concern of these compensators is their high kVA rating. In this paper,a hybrid technique is proposed to solve aforementioned problems.A combination of SVC as an auxiliary device is employed together with the main compensators,i.e.,RPC and APQC that leads on to the reduction of power rating of the main compensators. The use of proposed scheme will cause to reduce significantly the initial investment cost of compensation system. The main compensators are only utilized to balance active powers of two adjacent feeder sections and suppress harmonic currents. The SVCs are used to compensate reactive power and suppress the third and fifth harmonic currents. In this paper firstly, the PQ compensation procedure in AC electrified railway is analyzed step by step. Then, the control strategies for SVC and the main compensators are presented. Finally,a simulation is fulfilled using Matlab/Simulink software to verify the effectiveness and validity of the proposed scheme and compensation strategy and also demonstrate that this technique could compensate all PQ problems. 展开更多

A parameter estimation method based on an improved Whale Optimization Algorithm is proposed in this paper to identify the parameters of a static var compensator(SVC)model.First,a mathematical model of SVC is established. Then, the reverse learning strategy and Levy flight disturbance strategy are introduced to improve the whale optimization algorithm, and the improved whale optimization algorithm is applied to the parameter identification of the static var compensator model. Finally,a stepwise identification method,by analyzing the local sensitivities of parameters,is proposed which solves the problem of low accuracy caused by multi-parameter identification. This method provides a new estimation strategy for accurately identifying the parameters of the static var compensator model.Estimation results show that the parameter estimation method can be an effective tool to solve the problem of parameter identification for the SVC model. 展开更多

Using the energy-based Hamiltonian function method, this paper investigates the decentralized robust nonlinear control of multiple static var compensators (SVCs) in multimachine multiload power systems. First, the uncertain nonlinear differential algebraic equation model is constructed for the power system. Then, the dissipative Hamiltonian realization of the system is completed by means of variable transformation and prefeedback control. Finally, based on the obtained dissipative Hamiltonian realization, a decentralized robust nonlinear controller is put forward. The proposed controller can effectively utilize the internal structure and the energy balance property of the power system. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the control scheme. 展开更多

In large inter connected power systems, inter-area oscillations are turned to be a severe problem. Hence inter-area oscillations cause severe problems like damage to generators, reduce the power transfer capability of transmission lines, increase wear and tear on network components, increase line losses etc. This paper is to maintain the stability of system by damping inter-area oscillations. Implementation of new equipment consists of high power electronics based technologies such as FACTs and proper controller design has become an essential to provide better damping performance than Power System Stabilizer (PSS). With development of Wide Area Measurement System (WAMS), remote signals have become as feedback signals to design Wide Area Damping Controller (WADC) for FACTs devices. In this work, POD is applied to both SVC and SSSC. Simulation studies are carried out in Power System Analysis Toolbox (PSAT) environment to evaluate the effectiveness of the FACTs controller in a large area power system. Results show that extensive analysis of FACTs controller for improving stability of system. 展开更多

To achieve economical compensation for the huge-capacity negative sequence currents generated by high-speed railway load, an electromagnetic hybrid compensation system(EHCS) and control strategy is proposed. The EHCS is made up of a small-capacity railway static power conditioner(RPC) and a large-capacity magnetic static var compensator(MSVC). Compared with traditional compensation methods, the EHCS makes full use of the SVC’s advantages of economy and reliability and of RPC’s advantages of technical capability and flexibility. Based on the idea of injecting a negative sequence, the compensation principle of the EHCS is analyzed in detail. Then the minimum installation capacity of an EHCS is theoretically deduced. Furthermore, a constraint optimization compensation strategy that meets national standards, which reduces compensation capacity further, is proposed. An experimental platform based on a digital signal processor(DSP) and a programmable logic controller(PLC) is built to verify the analysis. Simulated and experimental results are given to demonstrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method. 展开更多

An active disturbance rejection controller (ADRC) is developed for load frequency control (LFC) and voltage regulation respectively in a power system. For LFC, the ADRC is constructed on a three-area interconnected power system. The control goal is to maintain the frequency at nominal value (60Hz in North America) and keep tie-line power flow at scheduled value. For voltage regulation, the ADRC is applied to a static var compensator (SVC) as a supplementary controller. It is utilized to maintain the voltages at nearby buses within the ANSI C84.1 limits (or +5% tolerance). Particularly, an alternative ADRC with smaller controller gains than classic ADRC is originally designed on the SVC system. From power generation and transmission to its distribution, both voltage and frequency regulating systems are subject to large and small disturbances caused by sudden load changes, transmission faults, and equipment loss/malfunction etc. The simulation results and theoretical analyses demonstrate the effectiveness of the ADRCs in compensating the disturbances and achieving the control goals. 展开更多

This paper presents an efficient interactive differential evolution ODE) to solve the multi-objective security environmental/economic dispatch (SEED) pro- blem considering multi shunt flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) devices. Two sub problems are proposed. The first one is related to the active power planning to minimize the combined total fuel cost and emissions, while the second is a reactive power planning (RPP) using multi shunt FACTS device based static VAR compensator (SVC) installed at specified buses to make fine corrections to the voltage deviation, voltage phase profiles and reactive power violation. The migration operation inspired from biogeography-based optimization (BBO) algorithm is newly introduced in the proposed approach, thereby effectively exploring and exploiting promising regions in a space search by creating dynamically new efficient partitions. This new mechanism based migration between individuals from different subsystems makes the initial partitions to react more by changing experiences. To validate the robustness of the proposed approach, the proposed algorithm is tested on the Algerian 59-bus electrical network and on a large system, 40 generating units considering valve-point loading effect. Comparison of the results with recent global optimization methods show the superiority of the proposed IDE approach and confirm its potential for solving practical optimal power flow in terms of solution quality and convergence characteristics. 展开更多
