A Study on Oral English Learning Strategies of Non-English Majors and Their Oral English Competence

In China,a lot of studies have been carried out to investigate the college students' learning strategies and their relationship to learning achievement mainly in the aspect of reading,writing,listening and vocabulary learning.But in the area of speaking,not many researches have been conducted due to this or that reason.Moreover,the subjects under these studies were mostly English majors and non-English majors of the common universities or colleges.There are few studies that focus on the use of the strategies of the non-English major students from independent colleges.This study was conducted by means of questionnaire and oral test among 90 first-year non-English major students from an independent college.

Comparison of environmental responding strategies between Ulva prolifera and Sargassum horneri:an in-situ study during the co-occurrence of green tides and golden tides in the Yellow Sea,China in 2017

Large-scale green tides in the Yellow Sea occurred for 13 consecutive years since 2007.The unusual co-occurrence of green tides and golden tides occurred in the Yellow Sea in 2017.The causative species are Ulva prolifera and/or Sargassum horneri.Previous studies on physiological response characteristics of U.prolifera and S.horneri are done in the laboratory mainly,and there is no in-situ comparative study in this regard.In this study,the in-situ physiological response characteristics of both species were measured.The results indicated that cyclic electron flow and antioxidant system play more important roles in protecting U.prolifera,while non-photochemical quenching is more important for adapting to the environment in S.horneri.U.prolifera has a stronger ability to utilize nutrients to rapidly increase its biomass under a suitable condition compared to S.horneri.

A Contrastive Study on Relativization Strategies of English and Chinese:Based on the NPAH Theory

Relativization is a common feature shared by almost every language,which also needs to be analyzed from the contrastive perspective.Considering about the NPAH theory,two questions has been solved here:what are the similarities and differences between English and Chinese selativization strategies;whether the data gained from analyzing the corpus could support the NPAH theory.By analyzing the corpus,2 points has been found:1)Relative-pronoun strategy is the most frequently used strategy in English,in spite of Chinese RC has no relative-pronoun strategy.2)The accessibility for English RC with+case strategy starts from IO,but Chinese starts from DO.Generally,both English and Chinese relative clause can support the accessibility hierarchy of the NPAH.

Experimental Study of Primary School Students’Independent Reading Based on the Network Teaching Platform

The development of information technology, especially the rise of online teaching platforms, has changed the way people read and the methods they use. Under this influence, primary school students’ independent reading has also been changed. However, due to limited self-control and understanding, primary school students face certain difficulties when using online teaching platforms for independent reading. Advantages and disadvantages of distance learning based on the network teaching platform were summarized in this paper. A one-year experiment study was carried out on our school fifth-grade students in independent reading using WeChat campus platform considering their current situation and existing problems of independent reading. In experiment study an independent reading mode was introduced. The results show that this reading mode can significantly improve students’ independent reading ability.

Development of Temperature-Humidity Independent Control Air-Conditioning Unit for Residential Buildings

Cooling panels are increasingly used in domestic residential buildings.To provide medium temperature cold water for the cooling panel,and dehumidify the indoor air simultaneously,a new kind of temperature-humidity independent control air-conditioning unit was developed for single residential house by utilizing multi-variable technology.First,the supply air temperature was studied to determine the proper supply air flow rate for the humidity control.Then,the energy consumption of different temperature-humidity independent control systems was studied.The analysis indicates that unity evaporating temperature can be used to handle the moisture load and sensible heat load in two evaporators.So the unit scheme was put forward.Two evaporators were used to produce medium temperature water and dry air separately,and electric expansion valves were used to control the refrigerant distribution between the two evaporators.Then,experimental work was carried out to investigate the influence of compressor frequency,refrigerant distribution on the dehumidification capacity,energy efficiency and refrigeration capacity.In the end,the paper concludes that both compressor frequency and refrigerant distribution can control the dehumidification capacity,but the former influences the EER more than the latter,while the latter influences the refrigeration capacity more than the former.We can find a proper running point at certain sensible and latent cooling load by adjusting both compressor frequency and electric expansion valve.The energy consumption of this kind of unit was estimated and compared with present room air conditioners,which shows that it can save about 41% cooling energy consumption.

Climate change effects in the Western Himalayan ecosystems of India: evidence and strategies

Background： The fragile landscapes of the Himalayan region are highly susceptible to natural hazards, and there is ongoing concern about current and potential climate change impacts. This study provides background information on India＇s Western Himalayas and reviews evidence of warming as well as variability in precipitation and extreme events.Methods： Understanding and anticipating the impacts of climate change on Himalayan forest ecosystems and the services they provide to people are critical. Efforts to develop and implement effective policies and management strategies for climate change mitigation and adaptation requires particular new research initiatives. The various studies initiated and conducted in the region are compiled here.Results： Several new initiatives taken by the Himalayan Forest Research Institute in Shimla are described. This includes new permanent observational field studies, some with mapped trees, in high altitude transitional zones for continuous monitoring of vegetation response. We have also presented new strategies for mitigating potential climate change effects in Himalayan forest ecosystems.Conclusions： Assessment of the ecological and genetic diversity of the Himalayan conifers is required to evaluate potential responses to changing climatic conditions. Conservation strategies for the important temperate medicinal plants need to be developed. The impact of climate change on insects and pathogens in the Himalayas also need to be assessed. Coordinated efforts are necessary to develop effective strategies for adaptation and mitigation.

Genome-wide association studies of hypertension:Achievements,difficulties and strategies

Estimated from family studies,the heritability of hypertension ranges from 31%to 68%.Linkage studies and candidate gene association studies were once widely used to investigate the genetic mechanisms of hypertension.However,results from these studies could only explain 1%-2%heritability.With the technological advances and subsequently the accomplishment of the Human Genome Project,genome-wide association studies(GWA studies)have been applied to find genome-wide significant signals for many common diseases.Current GWA studies of hypertension have identified dozens of hypertension or blood pressure associated variants.However,different GWA study identified different variants and the results could hardly be replicated in other studies.Therefore,a debate took place on whether GWA studies will unlock the genetic basis of hypertension and whether we shall continue throwing millions of dollars on GWA studies.This review gives a short introduction to the history of genetic study on hypertension and summarizes the current findings for GWA studies of hypertension or blood pressure.Finally,we will discuss that debate and try to find alternative strategies and technologies that may hold a greater chance to make progress in understanding the genetic risk factors of hypertension and blood pressure regulation.

Investigating the Use of Strategic Reading Activities in College English Class: A Case Study

This paper,by adopting a qualitative research method,investigated the use of strategic reading activities by two female teachers in College English classes.Results showed that their commonly-used strategic reading activities in college English classes reflected three types of reading comprehension strategies including use of prior knowledge,use of text elements with a high information value,and use of structure-marking elements in the text.Pedagogical implications were also discussed.

Effect of Larval Topical Application of Juvenile Hormone on Caste Determination in the Independent-Founding Eusocial Wasp <i>Mischocyttarus consimilis</i>(Hymenoptera: Vespidae)

Eusocial wasps are excellent models for understanding polyethism and division of labor among castes in social insects. However, little is known about the mechanisms controlling caste determination in eusocial wasps. Evidence suggests that the phenotype of queens in independent-founding (IF) eusocial wasps of the subfamily Polistinae can be partly fixed in the larval stage;however, this hypothesis has not yet been investigated. In this study we evaluate whether juvenile hormone (JH) affects pre-imaginal caste determination in the IF eusocial wasp Mischocyttarus consimilis (Hymenoptera: Vespidae). Analyzing morphometric and behavioral data, we demonstrated experimentally that females emerging from larvae that were treated with JH in the third instar had a significantly larger body size, spent more time in the nest, and were subject to less physical aggression from nestmates compared with females emerging from untreated control larvae. These results indicate that phenotype differences among castes in IF eusocial wasps can be partly fixed in the pre-adult stage and influenced by variations in the JH titer.

Utilization of the Teaching Strategies among Nurse Tutors in Malawi Nursing Colleges

Background: There are numerous teaching strategies that suit the pedagogical learning, but not all can yield the desired outcome and be properly applied by nurse tutors in both classroom and clinical area. Therefore, identifying the utilization of the teaching strategy for nurse tutors is very detrimental in nursing education. Methods: Descriptive exploratory design which utilized both qualitative and sequential quantitative methods was applied to Iterated Purposive Probability Sampling (IPPS) of 10 nursing colleges in Malawi. This was done to 129 student and 82 nurse tutors in two structured questionnaires, 40 in-depth interviews and 10 focus groups. There were 56 variables for the teaching strategy under five ranked Likert scale and the Cronbach’s Alpha was found to be 0.964 without standardisation and it was 0.963 after standardisation. Results: Direct teaching strategies like the lecture method are very common although nurse tutors prefer to combine with other interactive instructions. There is statistical association of use of role play and group discussion methods and nurse tutor work experience with odds ratios of OR ≤ 1.624;CI(0.576 ± 4.579);p ≥ 0.359 and OR ≤ 1.397;CI(0.882 ± 2.306);p ≥ 0.147 respectively. The ability to use different teaching strategies competently is still very limited among nurse tutors in Malawi nursing colleges. This compromises quality of learning among nursing students in the colleges. Conclusion: Developing a new teaching strategy that could combine the different attributes in the variety of the teaching instructions can promote the quality of nursing education in Malawi.

A Cultural Study of English Idioms Translation

Language is the carrier of culture, bearing the national cultural information. As the most culturally-loaded element in any language's vocabulary, idioms have aroused more and more attention. This paper starts with the analysis of the relationship between culture, idioms and translation, and makes an investigation of cultural factors affecting idiom translation such as subjective and objective factors. Based on these analyses, the paper will propose the cultural translation principles and strategies focusing on cultural connotations of idioms in order to transfer the English idioms translation from the language level to the cultural level.

A Comparative Study of Two Chinese Versions of Animal Farm

Animal Farm succeeds in establishing George Orwell's position as a master in literature with its profound moral and hidden but killing sarcasms.And it has been translated into many languages around the world,arousing heated response.So far,there are seventeen versions in China.However,the academic studies focus on the significance of its literary value and political aspects,paying little attention to the systemic study of its translations.The thesis chooses the versions of Rong Rude and Fu Weici and compares them from lexical,syntactical and discourse aspects.Through the comparative study,the author finds out that the two translators apply different translation strategies.Rong tends to adopt foreignization strategy,while Fu is inclined to apply domestication strategy.
