The technique utilizes changes in the strain of standardized test substrates, which is measured by BHP-700℃ temperature-compensated resistance strain gauges, as an indication of the level of residual stress in the sprayed coatings. Based on the concept that the sprayed coating on the surface of substrate with residual stresses acts a force (N) and bending moment (M) on the test piece, the calculating equation of residual stress in the coatings has been proposed. The results of the test method showed that the technique is potentially reliable and accurate, although deficiencies and many controversies are still exist.展开更多

However, residual stresses in the surface coatings of structural components have adverse effects on their properties, such as fatigue life, dimensional stability and corrosion resistance, etc. The micro-arc oxidation ceramic coatings are produced on the surfaces of 6061 aluminum alloy by a homemade asymmetric AC type of micro-arc oxidation equipment of 20 kW. A constant current density of 4.4___0.1 A/dm2 and a self-regulated composite electrolyte are used. The micro-arc oxidation treatment period ranges from 10 min to 40 min, and the thickness of the ceramic coatings is more than 20 Bin. Residual stresses attributed to 7-A1203 constituent in the coatings at different micro-arc oxidation periods are analyzed by an X-ray diffractometer using the sin2~u method. The analysis results show that the residual stress in the ceramic coatings is compressive in nature, and it increases first and then decreases with micro-arc oxidation time increase. The maximum stress value is 1 667_+20 MPa for period of 20 min. Through analyzing the coating thickness, surface morphology and phase composition, it is found that the residual stress in the ceramic coatings is linked closely with the coating growth, the phase composition and the micro cracks formed. It is also found that both the heat treatment and the ultrasonic action release remarkably the residual compressive stress. The heat treatment makes the residual compressive stress value decrease 1 378 MPa. The ultrasonic action even alters the nature of the residual stress, making the residual compressive stress change into a residual tensile stress.展开更多

The influence of the realistic situation including load and temperature on the residual stress of the coatings is investigated. Simulated results show that the realistic situation strongly affects the residual stress. The obtained results showed that, as the cycle number of the thermal shock loading increases, the evolution of the residual stress under- goes three distinct stages: a sharp increase, a gradual change, and a reduction. The extension stress near the TBC surface is fast transformed to compressive one through just one thermal cycle. After different thermal shock cycles with peak temperature of 1 100℃, phase transformation in TBC does not happen, whereas the generation, development, evolution of the thermally grown oxide (TGO) layer and micro-cracks are the main reasons causing the evolution regularity of the residual stress.展开更多

However, due to the metallurgical complexity of materials, it is rather difficult to obtain a closed-form solution of residual stresses within multilayered coatings (e.g. functionally graded coatings, FGCs). In this paper,an analytical model is developed to predict the distribution of residual stresses within multilayered coatings. The advantage of this model is that the solution of residual stresses is independent of the number of layers. Specific results are obtained by calculating elastic thermal stresses in ZrO2/NiCoCrAIY FGCs, which consist of different material layers. Furthermore, the residual stress distribution near the edges and the stress-induced failure modes of coating are also analyzed. The topics discussed provide some insights into the development of a methodology for designing fail-safe coating systems.展开更多

Thermal stress would be introduced into the composite during cooling because of the mismatch of thermo-mechanical properties among their components. The low modulus coating can effectively reduce the interracial stress caused by different thermal expansion coefficient between fibers and ma- trix, no matter how high or low the expansion coefficients of coatings are in CF/Al and SiC/Ti composite systems, however, high modulus coating can decrease the interfacial compressive stress, only when the thermal expansion coefficient of coating is lower.展开更多

In this study, the thermal stress field of thermal barrier coating (TBC) structures is measured by CGS method. Two kinds of powders were sprayed onto Ni-based alloy using a plasma spraying method to obtain two groups of film-substrate specimens. The specimens were then heated with an oxy-acetylene flame. A triangle of normalized layer thickness was created for describing thickness ratios of HDA/PEO coatings. Then, the effect of thickness ratio on stresses field of HDA/PEO coatings subjected to uniform normal contact load was investigated by finite element method. Results show that the surface tensile stress is mainly affected by the thickness ratio of Al layer when the total thickness of coating is unchanged. With the increase of Al layer thickness, the surface tensile stress rises quickly. When Al2O3 layer thickness increases, surface tensile stress is diminished. Meanwhile, the maximum shear stress moves rapidly towards internal part of HDA/PEO coatings. Shear stress at the Al2O3 /Al interface is minimal when Al2O3 layer and Al layer have the same thickness.展开更多
