An Investigation into ELP Courses from Students'Perceived Needs

Although very vital world widely,ESP(English for special purpose) teaching in China is still in its infancy.Therefore,this research taking ELP(English for legal purpose) course as an example,tries to produce some valuable suggestions:ESP textbooks should focus on linguistic continuity;a team teaching model should be encouraged;researching into the Target Use Situation is needed.

On ESP Teaching in Higher Vocational Colleges-from the Perspective of Students＇ Needs

ESP （English for Specific Purposes） is an English approach which relates to certain specific profession, subject or purpose. It is in accordance with the training goal of higher vocational English with its characteristics of profession and practicability. Currently, some problems exist in the ESP teaching at HVC （Higher Vocational Colleges）, which leads to unsatisfactory teaching effect of ESP. Some suggestions will be devoted to improvement of ESP teaching in HVC from the perspective of students＇ needs.

To what extent should grammar be taught for the students of English majors in China？

The purpose of this paper is to show the importance of grammar teaching for the students of English majors in China and to provide an integrated teaching method for the teachers of English in China and colleagues in similar situations outside of China, through the analysis of the nature and role of grammar, of the importance of form depending upon the students＇ and instructional variables, and of using texts communicatively, in English teaching.

Learner Choice in Language Study

Learner centered design programs typically focus on analyzing the needs of students or encouraging more students to participate in classroom activities.This paper argues that the real learner centered approach should consider allowing learners to play a greater role in learning management,learning methods and learning opportunities by providing selection for the learners.This opportunity can be introduced into the traditional classroom with minimize the problems.The learner's choice as a more basic aspect of language curriculum can be provided by establish autonomous learning center.Teachers'and learners'attitudes to the centre are discussed,and it is suggested that we should do more things to guide both teachers'and learners'expectations in order to make learner choices an active feature of foreign language study.

The Implications of Authenticity and Intensity in EFL Teaching： A Study of the Intensive-Year Programme at the College of Telecom and Electronics （CTE）, in Saudi Arabia

The current study endeavours to examine the extent to how authenticity, usage, and intensity of native English instruction impact EFL students behaviourally and linguistically at the preparatory year programme in CTE, where students undertake an intensive English course for one year. The programme is managed by an American company called Interlink and is entirely staffed by native English teachers. The implementation of this English instruction encompasses motivational, pedagogical, and administrative challenges that hinder its practicality for positive and achievable learning outcomes. To this end, this paper will attempt to address the sociolinguistic and historical profile of EFL in Saudi Arabia in order to present an overall picture of this study＇s context.

New Approach to Teaching English for Business Communication

The paper presents new developments in teaching English for business communication to pre-experienced students It presents a short history of changes that have occurred in the teaching methodologies in Europe in the last 40 years It shreds some light on the priorities of the last decades and on the ever growing importance of students＇ needs. It stresses the changes resulting from globalization, new business opportunities and new trends in employment. The changing business environment makes it necessary to improve communicative competence. Recently, the linguistic component of ESP （English for Specific Purposes） courses for pre-experienced students has been increasingly combined with the sociolinguistic and pragmatic components which contribute greatly to good communicative competence. The new approach is much more challenging for business English teachers and requires much higher qualifications, e.g., content knowledge and business skills. In order to increase the effectiveness of ESP courses, we need teaching materials based on corpus studies that could prioritize the highest-frequency business lexis and streamline students＇ efforts.
