The triptych (Smartphones, Video games, adolescents) has imposed itself on the collective consciousness in the form of questioning to the point of becoming a social phenomenon. It thus raises concerns about the uses that adolescents make of it and the effects on their academic performance, which we proposed to study among middle school students from the Dakar academy inspection. Where appropriate, we used mixed methods with the collection techniques of questionnaire survey, semi-structured interviews respectively with middle school students, adults (parents, supervisors, teachers, etc.), participant observation and literature review. Concretely, before accessibility to video games, the middle school students were more idle and well-behaved, watched a lot of TV, played with their brothers and sisters or did household chores. The majority of young people had good, very good or excellent conduct and their averages were fair, fairly good or good. With access to a diverse digital environment, middle school students have passionately turned to video games. As a result, their learning time, concentration and submission to parental injunctions have declined significantly. This situation negatively affected their academic performance and encouraged bad behavior. 展开更多

Background: The purpose of this study was to explore the feasibility and understand the potential impact on elementary students’ perceptions of, and intentions related to, healthy eating and physical activity when their classroom teacher sets and shares goals related to these health behaviors. Methods: Participants in this study included 16 teachers and 229 students of grades 3 - 6 at a large elementary school in the Western United States. Participating students were surveyed before and after a six-week intervention conducted by classroom teachers that consisted of a weekly displaying of Teacher Goal Boards in a prominent classroom location and sharing of goals set for the week. Teacher reports of the previous week’s goals occurred each Monday prior to sharing and posting of new goals for the new week. Results: Respondents reported significantly higher post-test values for over half of pre-post comparisons. Respondents were more likely to intend to be physically active (post = 52.6% vs. pre = 39.0%, p = 0.003), to eat nutritious foods (52.0% vs. 36.4%, p = 0.001), and to maintain a healthy body weight (62.8% vs. 52.2%, p = 0.022). Similar results were found for summary measures. Intention to be physically active, to eat healthy, to maintain a healthy weight, as well as descriptive norms for physical activity and perception and value of personal health behaviors were all significantly higher at post-test. Discussion: This study and its findings are significant because teacher participants were able to significantly and positively impact on students’ behavioral intent, subjective norms, and perception and value of personal health behaviors amongst students without spending additional time on formal health promotion and education instruction. Conclusion: Schools should incentivize and encourage faculty and staff to engage in a variety of health behaviors to improve both personal health outcomes and role model health behaviors for students. 展开更多

Its prevalence and behavioural characteristics may vary according to regional and cultural differences. Investigation of NSSI locations and diagnosis of adolescents with NSSI are relatively lacking in China. Aims The study objective was to determine the prevalence and features of NSSI among middle school students in Shanghai. Methods The participants were from grade 6 to 8 selected from three junior schools in Jing’an District. Consenting students completed the Ottawa Self-Injury Inventory to determine the prevalence and characteristics of NSSI. Those who indicated NSSI within the past month were administered the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview for Children and Adolescents to assess for emotional disorders. Result The result shows 510 participants (21.7%;mean age 13.51 (0.97) years old;56.7% female) reported at least one instance of NSSI during the previous 12 months. NSSI was significantly more common in girls than boys (24.9% vs 18.5%;χ^2=14.03, p=0.00). Commonly reported reasons for NSSI were for internal and external emotion regulation (87.9%, 82.3%) and social influence (57.8%). Anxiety disorders were the most common (28.9%) disorder associated with NSSI. Conclusion The rate of NSSI of middle school students in Shanghai inner bound is similar to those reported in North American and European youth. It is essential that school mental health professionals are aware of how to manage NSSI within the school setting. 展开更多

Methods This is a school-based intervention study. Four junior middle schools and two senior middle schools in Xuhui District, Shanghai, were selected as study sites involving parents, two junior middle schools and one senior middle school as the intervention group and others as control group. The intervention group was provided with both school and family education which contained giving lectures, distributing leaflets, organizing group discussions and parent-adolescent communicating activities to parents. Data were collected through anonymous and self-administered questionnaires before and after one-year intervention to evaluate the effect of the intervention. Results The average score of parents in the intervention group was higher than that in the control group after intervention. Particularly, the mean score of AIDS knowledge in the intervention group was increased by 10.5, which was more than that of control group (5.3). The intervention increased the parents' intention to family sex education. The percentage of parents in the intervention group approving "sex education should be provided by parents" had increased, much higher than that in the control group. Intervention also promoted parent-adolescent communication about sex. The percentage of parents reporting "they actively talked with their children about sex or their teens asked them questions related to sex" had increased, much higher than that in the control group. Conclusion Family-school combined sex education significantly increased sexual knowledge and sex education intention of parents, promoted the parent-adolescent communication about sex as well. 展开更多

Programming teaching plays an important role in improving students’computational thinking and practice. However, due to the fact that programming has not been included in the entrance examination, the rate of having programming lessons in primary and secondary schools is low.At present, there is still a lack of empirical research on how programming affects the performance of other subjects. This paper studies the influence of programming on students’mathematics achievement for the students of an experimental middle school. The results show that programming has a significant impact on students’math scores, and the students who had not learned code were more likely to show a significant decline in math scores. In addition, learning programming makes it easier for middle-grade students to improve their math scores. 展开更多

The purpose of this study is to differentiate the gender into males and females based on prior research that children prefer different types of play depending on their gender, and to see what the relationship between their self-esteem and preferred types of play is.Random stratified method was used to collect study participants for this study.Elementary school students in Incheon Metropolitan City,Republic of Korea, were set up as a population, the city was divided into six areas in a similar area, and each school was numbered after identifying local elementary schools.A total of six schools were selected for each region by making random checks.A total of 18 classes were selected for each of the four, five, and six grades.A total of 450 questionnaires were distributed, but 381 of them were used for statistical analysis, except for 69 that were judged to have been poorly response. There were 215 male,166 female,151 in fourth grade,109 in fifth grade, and 121 in sixth grade. There are two questionnaires used in this study.First,to measure self-esteem,Rosengerg’s 10-item Self Esteem Scale was used to assess self-esteem.The scale, which provides a convenient measure of global attitudes about the self, has five negatively worded items and five positively worded items. This scale is one of the most widely used measures of self-esteem and has displayed good reliability and validity.Cronbach’s a showed 0.859.Second,to find out the preference for play types,we used those produced by Choi and Lee based on four types of play suggested by Roger Caillois. The questionnaire consists of four sub-variables:competition(Agon),chance(Alea),simulation(Mimicry)and vertigo(Ilinx). The Crombach’s a values are 0.705,0.694,0.786,and 0.722,respectively.The class teacher of the selected school was contacted and explained the purpose of the study and asked for consent. On the measurement date,we visited the class and conducted the measurement. Before measurement,we informed the purpose of the study again and asked for consent. The self-reported method was used to respond, and the measurement time was about 10 minutes. The responses were coded using the SPSS(win)15.0 program and frequency analysis was performed to characterize the data. The independent t-test was carried out to see if there was a difference between self-esteem and preferred types of play by gender.Correlation analysis was performed to see how self-esteem relates to the type of preferred play. All statistical significance levels are set as p<0.05.Children’s self-esteem does not differ depending on their gender. And it turned out that boys preferred competition, and girls preferred simulation, and chance and vertigo did not differ depending on gender. In male,a correlation between self-esteem and preference for play types has resulted in statistically significant correlation between self-esteem and competition, chance, and vertigo. In female,a correlation between self-esteem and preference for play types was performed in vertigo, where self-esteem was statistically significant. 展开更多
