Cell and Tissue Engineering provides exciting opportunities for studying development and Disease.In this talk,we will focus on cell chirality,also known as handedness and left-right(LR)asymmetry,which is an intrinsic ...Cell and Tissue Engineering provides exciting opportunities for studying development and Disease.In this talk,we will focus on cell chirality,also known as handedness and left-right(LR)asymmetry,which is an intrinsic capability of the cell telling left from right(1)The development of the vertebrate body plan with left-right asymmetry requires the emerging chiral morphogenesis at multicellular levels at specific embryonic stages.Changes in orientation of the LR axis due to genetic or environmental factors can lead to malformations and disease.However,the concept of cell chirality has never studied in detail until the recent development of novel engineering tools[2-3].We demonstrate that the cultivation of cells on micropatterned 2D surfaces and in 3D graded hydrogels reveals an intrinsic cellular LR asymmetry,which is dependent of cell phenotype and actin cytoskeleton.With these new tools,we examine the role of cell chirality on the embryonic development of cardiac LR asymmetry [4] as well as the barrier function of endothelium layers [5].We find that Protein Kinase C(PKC)activation reverses the inherent chirality from clockwise to counter clockwise in engineering systems [4-5].Interestingly,activation of PKC signaling reverses the directional bias of chick cardiac C-looping [4].Mediating endothelial cell chirality can regulate the permeability of endothelial layers[5].Overall,our results strongly suggest critical roles of cell chirality in cardiovascular development and disease.展开更多
Neurological disorders are amongst the most widely studied human aliments.Yet,they are also one of the most poorly understood.Although most of these disorders are polygenic,genotype still plays an important role in th...Neurological disorders are amongst the most widely studied human aliments.Yet,they are also one of the most poorly understood.Although most of these disorders are polygenic,genotype still plays an important role in their etiologies.For example,in schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorders,there is a 40-60%concordance rate in monozygotic twins,with 60-90%heritability(Burmeister et al.,2008).However,the mechanisms by which multiple genes and their genomic variations influence the phenotypes of the disorders remain to be understood. The complexities of the disorders are tur- ther compounded by the individual rarity of the genomic variations and their variable penetrance (Cook and Scherer, 2008). Thus, conventional disease modeling, such as gene knockout in cells or in animals, to attain the desired disease genotype may not be the most suitable platform for tackling most neurological disorders.展开更多

To validate the ability of full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo (FCIQMC) for studying the 2D Hubbard model near half-filling regime, the ground state energies of a 4×44×4 square lattice syste...To validate the ability of full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo (FCIQMC) for studying the 2D Hubbard model near half-filling regime, the ground state energies of a 4×44×4 square lattice system with various interaction strengths are calculated. It is found that the calculated results are in good agreement with those obtained by exact diagonalization (i.e., the exact values for a given basis set) when the population of psi particles (psips) is higher than the critical population required to correctly sample the ground state wave function. In addition, the variations of the average computational time per 20 Monte Carlo cycles with the coupling strength and the number of processors are also analyzed. The calculated results show that the computational efficiency of an FCIQMC calculation is mainly affected by the total population of psips and the communication between processors. These results can provide useful references for understanding the FCIQMC algorithm, studying the ground state properties of the 2D Hubbard model for the larger system size by the FCIQMC method and using a computational budget as effectively as possible.展开更多

After the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was published on Dec. 10, 1948, Chinese scholars and media studied the document and introduced it to China. Since the adoption of the reform and opening up policy three decades ago, and with the building of the socialist legal system with Chinese charac teristics and the deepening of human rights dialogue between China and other countries and international organizations, the academic com munity has shown more interest in studying the document. Objective:To explore experiences of Chinese nurses who study for Master of Science in Professional Practice(health care)in the United Kingdom.Methods:A qualitative approach was applied,consisting of semi-structured te...Objective:To explore experiences of Chinese nurses who study for Master of Science in Professional Practice(health care)in the United Kingdom.Methods:A qualitative approach was applied,consisting of semi-structured telephone interviews(n=8).The Colaizzi seven-step framework analysis method was used to extract themes.Results:The themes that emerged are as follows:(1)gains from studying overseas,(2)difficulties during studying,and(3)impacts of learning experience on work.The gains for nurses studying overseas include the improvement of scientific research capabilities,reconstruction of critical thinking,and development of reflection ability.Difficulties while studying mainly include language barrier,strict assessment,and boring life.Conclusions:The education of nursing postgraduate attaches impor tance to the cultivation of thinking.Nurses are very interested in nursing research including qualitative and quantitative methods.Nurses encountered language barriers in their study and life even though they knew a cer tain level of English.展开更多
Hydraulic fracturing(HF)is an effective way to intensify oil production,which is currently widely used in various conditions,including complex carbonate reservoirs.In the conditions of the field under consideration,th...Hydraulic fracturing(HF)is an effective way to intensify oil production,which is currently widely used in various conditions,including complex carbonate reservoirs.In the conditions of the field under consideration,the hydraulic fracturing leads to a significant differentiation of technological efficiency indicators,which makes it expedient to study the patterns of crack formation in detail.Studies were carried out for all wells,which were considered as the objects of impact,to assess the spatial orientation of the cracks formed.The developed indirect method was used for this purpose,the reliability of which was confirmed by geophysical methods.During the analysis,it was found that in all cases,the crack is oriented in the direction of the section of the development system element characterized by the maximum reservoir pressure.At the same time,the reservoir pressure values for all wells were determined at one point in time(at the beginning of HF)using machine learning methods.The reliability of the machine learning methods used is confirmed by the high convergence with the actual(historical)reservoir pressures obtained during hydrodynamic studies of wells.The obtained conclusion about the influence of the reservoir pressure on the patterns of fracture formation should be taken into account when planning hydraulic fracturing under the conditions studied.展开更多

文摘Hydraulic fracturing(HF)is an effective way to intensify oil production,which is currently widely used in various conditions,including complex carbonate reservoirs.In the conditions of the field under consideration,the hydraulic fracturing leads to a significant differentiation of technological efficiency indicators,which makes it expedient to study the patterns of crack formation in detail.Studies were carried out for all wells,which were considered as the objects of impact,to assess the spatial orientation of the cracks formed.The developed indirect method was used for this purpose,the reliability of which was confirmed by geophysical methods.During the analysis,it was found that in all cases,the crack is oriented in the direction of the section of the development system element characterized by the maximum reservoir pressure.At the same time,the reservoir pressure values for all wells were determined at one point in time(at the beginning of HF)using machine learning methods.The reliability of the machine learning methods used is confirmed by the high convergence with the actual(historical)reservoir pressures obtained during hydrodynamic studies of wells.The obtained conclusion about the influence of the reservoir pressure on the patterns of fracture formation should be taken into account when planning hydraulic fracturing under the conditions studied.
