A multinational corporation （MNC） should have its foreign subsidiaries become more competitive so that it can better compete globally and grow. Managing foreign subsidiary＇s competitiveness is vital for overall, long-term, and global organizational growth. Strategic global leadership, vision, and culture among the top managers of headquarters and foreign subsidiaries are vital for enabling the subsidiaries to pursue their vision of improved competitiveness. Sustained growth and improved competitiveness in the global organization＇s multiple country environments then become the means for an MNC＇s overall strategic enhancement.

Loan Strategies to Small and Medium Size Enterprises:An Analysis of Determining Factors of“Subsidiary Banks”in the Cameroonian Context

This paper proposes to present an overview of determining factors of the granting of loan to Small and Medium Size Enterprises(SMSE)by the subsidiaries of multinational banks in Cameroon.The analysis of the data collected following interviews with banking employees conducted in accordance with the method of thematic content analysis reveals that two categories of factors play a major role in the decision of the banker:parameters relating to the characteristics of the SMSE applying for a loan and elements specific to the context of study.The combination of these factors contributes to the reinforcement of the already transactional attitude of these subsidiary banks in the area of experimentation of the study.

A Modified Lagrange Method for Solving Convex Quadratic Optimization Problems

In this paper, a modified version of the Classical Lagrange Multiplier method is developed for convex quadratic optimization problems. The method, which is evolved from the first order derivative test for optimality of the Lagrangian function with respect to the primary variables of the problem, decomposes the solution process into two independent ones, in which the primary variables are solved for independently, and then the secondary variables, which are the Lagrange multipliers, are solved for, afterward. This is an innovation that leads to solving independently two simpler systems of equations involving the primary variables only, on one hand, and the secondary ones on the other. Solutions obtained for small sized problems (as preliminary test of the method) demonstrate that the new method is generally effective in producing the required solutions.

Empirical study on the antecedents of multinational enterprises’ oversea subsidiaries staffing

Based on probing into the literature on multinational enterprise (MNE) staffing, we set up a concept model for MNEs’ subsidiary staffing by two groups of influencing factors: the national differences bwteen the parent country and the host country, and the strategies employed by MNEs. We also tested the model and proposed propositions by a sample evaluation method, specifically with 1 000 copies of questionnaires given out to managers or directors of MNEs’ subsidiaries in China Mainland and resulting in 151 sets of valid answers. The empirical study supports that national differences between the parent country and the host country and the strategies employed by MNEs do have impact on the subsidiary staffing, and MNE headquarters should make different staffing plans according to the difference of nations and strategies. We welcome testing our model by peer researchers in other country.

How Are MNCs Readjusting Their Global Strategies in China's Marketplace?

This paper is intended to make a comparative study of MNC subsidiaries in China at different stages. First of all, we built an S-SWOT theoretical framework for MNC Chinese subsidiary strategy analysis. Then, we conducted an empirical analysis of MNC Chinese subsidiary strategies at different periods of time based on the two questionnaire-based surveys undertaken in 2001 and 2005 and a field interview made with such subsidiary executives in 2006. Our study found that MNC Chinese subsidiary overall strategies and functional strategies significantly changed from 2001 to 2006. In particular, MNC Chinese subsidiaries: became increasingly wholly foreign owned and profit oriented; boosted M&A and alliance activities; localized research and development; paid more attention to intangible assets (brand and image) management; coordinated the extent of localization and integration; and assigned key positions to local personnel. We also noticed both a strategic convergence and a considerable strategic difference between the Chinese subsidiaries of MNCs from different countries during the evolution of their Chinese subsidiary strategies.

Training and Development of the International US Executive

The international US executive in foreign assignments faces more obstacles than his counterpart for domestic assignments. He has to pursue better coping skills for： cultural, communication and language, self-capability, stress management, and adjustment issues in the foreign settings. Premature return can be obviated through improved pre-departure training and post-arrival mentoring. US expatriates who are selected for foreign assignments in culturally distant and operationally different countries have an especially important need for their development and training. The challenge to adapt and become functional and fluent in the local surroundings in a very short time is very difficult for the expatriate. The expatriate＇s strange and difficult-to-fathom foreign environment causes him to be anxious as he works hard to adjust and be effective. The obstacles of dealing with the different business customs, social etiquette, and language differences make it difficult for communication, operating environments, and building professional relationships in an appropriate manner. He has to deal with the strangeness and unfamiliarity during the initial period after his arrival in the foreign country. This is further compounded by the pressing need for him to show good performance and produce results in his foreign assignment. He struggles to adjust and to perform the technical aspects of his task.
