Simulation Modelling and Techno-Economics of Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Recompression Closed Brayton Cycle

In recent years, there has been global interest in meeting targets relating to energy affordability and security while taking into account greenhouse gas emissions. This has heightened major interest in potential investigations into the use of supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) power cycles. Climate change mitigation is the ultimate driver for this increased interest;other relevant issues include the potential for high cycle efficiency and a circular economy. In this study, a 25 MWe recompression closed Brayton cycle (RCBC) has been assessed, and sCO2 has been proposed as the working fluid for the power plant. The methodology used in this research work comprises thermodynamic and techno-economic analysis for the prospective commercialization of this sCO2 power cycle. An evaluated estimation of capital expenditure, operational expenditure, and cost of electricity has been considered in this study. The ASPEN Plus simulation results have been compared with theoretical and mathematical calculations to assess the performance of the compressors, turbine, and heat exchangers. The results thus reveal that the cycle efficiency for this prospective sCO2 recompression closed Brayton cycle increases (39% - 53.6%) as the temperature progressively increases from 550˚C to 900˚C. Data from the Aspen simulation model was used to aid the cost function calculations to estimate the total capital investment cost of the plant. Also, the techno-economic results have shown less cost for purchasing equipment due to fewer components being required for the cycle configuration as compared to the conventional steam power plant. 展开更多

[Objective] Ginger essential oil (GEO) is widely used in food production and medical field in recent years due to its prominent biological functions, and this study was conducted to obtain high-quality and high-purity ginger essential oil from the fresh ginger. [Method] GEO was extracted from ginger roots by supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) method. The effects of flow rate of CO2, mesh size of ginger powder and volume of entrainer were investigated by single-factor experiments and response surface method. The content and extraction rate of 6-gingerol represented the extraction index of GEO. [Result] The conditions were optimized as follows: flow rate of CO2 at 25 L/h, mesh size of ginger power of 80 mesh, and volume of anhydrous ethanol as entrainer of 92.46 ml. The optimal extraction rate of 6-gingerol was 3.21%, which was predicted by RSM. [Conclusion] The optimal process of supercritical carbon dioxide extraction of ginger essential oil was identified by singlefactor experiments and response surface method. The present study provides a satisfactory method for purifying GEO from ginger for industrial purpose. 展开更多

[Objective] This study was aimed to determine the optimal parameters for the extraction of perilla seed oil to obtain high-quality perilla seed oil and analyze its compositions. [Method] In this study, perilla seed oil was extracted using supercritical CO2 (SC-CO2). The effects of extraction time, temperature and pressure were investigated by single-factor experiments and orthogonal array testing (ORT). The chemical compositions of extracted perilla seed oil were investigated by GC-MS. [Result] The optimal conditions for the extraction of perilla seed oil using SC-CO2 were extraction time of 4 h, extraction temperature at 40 ℃, and extraction pressure at 23 MPa. Under these conditions, the extraction yield of perilla seed oil was maximized to 12.43%. GC-MS analysis revealed that perilla seed oil was a complex mixture containing 76.183% α-linolenic acid. [Conclusion] Supercritical CO2 extraction was proven to be an effective technology to extract oil from perilla seed, and GCMS was also a satisfactory method for analyzing the compositions of perilla seed oil. 展开更多

The supercritical carbon dioxide extraction was applied to obtain essential oil from Pogostemon cablin in this work.Effect of extraction parameters including temperature,pressure,extraction time and particle size on extraction yield was investigated,and the response surface methodology with a Box–Behnken Design was used to achieve the optimized extraction conditions.The maximum yield of essential oil was 2.4356%under the conditions of extraction temperature 47°C,pressure 24.5 MPa and extraction time 119 min.Moreover,based on the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller theory of adsorption,a mathematical modeling was performed to correlate the measured data.The model shows a function relationship between extraction yield and time by a simple equation with three significantly adjustable parameters.These model parameters have been optimized through simulated annealing algorithm.The predicted data from the mathematical model show a good agreement with the experimental data of the different extraction parameters. 展开更多

Andrographis paniculata Nees has been extensively used for traditional medicine and help against fever dysentery, diarrhoea, inflammation, and sore throat. In this study, andrographolide, the main component of this plant was extracted from the leaves of A. paniculata using supercritical carbon dioxide. The operating pressures were varied from 7.50 to 20MPa, the temperatures were varied from 30℃ to 60℃, and the flow rates were varied from 0.5 to 4ml.min^-1. The best extraction condition occurred at 10MPa, 40℃, and a flow rate of 2ml.min^-1 for a 3g sample of A. paniculata ground-dried leaves. The measured extraction rate was found to be about 0.0174g of andrographolide per gram of andrographolide present in the leaves per hour of operation. The future studies must focus on the interaction between the various operating parameters such as temperature, pressure, and flow rate of supercritical carbon dioxide. 展开更多

Supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) extraction was employed to extract oil from Nigella glandulifera Freyn seed in this study. Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to evaluate the effects of the process parameters (pressure, temperature, and CO2 flow rate) on oil yield of N. glandulifera seed. A Box-Behnken design was used to optimize the extraction parameters. The analysis of variance indicated that the linear coefficients of pressure and CO2 flow rate, the quadratic term coefficients of pressure and temperature and the interactions between pressure and temperature, as well as temperature and CO2 flow rate, had significant effects on the oil yield (P〈0.05). The optimal conditions to obtain the maximum oil yield from N. glandulifera seed were pressure 30.84 MPa, temperature 40.57°C, and CO2 flow rate 22.00 L h-1. Under these optimal conditions, the yield of oil was predicted to be 38.19%. The validation experiment results agreed with the predicted values. The fatty acid composition of N. glandulifera seed oil extracted using SC-CO2 was compared with that of oil obtained by Soxhlet method. The results showed that the fatty acid compositions of oil extracted by the two methods were similar. Identification of oil compounds with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) showed that the contents of unsaturated fatty acids linoleic acid (48.30%), oleic acid (22.28%) and saturated fatty acids palmitic acid (16.65%), stearic acid (4.17%) were the most abundant fatty acids in seed oil from N. glandulifera. 展开更多

Separation of molybdenum isotope complexes by supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) with carbon dioxide was studied experimentally. The extraction of molybdenum isotope complexes was carried out in the updated extraction chamber (reactor) of the SFE-U installation, which provided an initial pressure of P ≤ 20 MPa at constant temperatures of the upper T1 = 35&deg;C and bottom T2 = 45&deg;C flanges. The device, through which the eluent was discharged, involved a set of four thin tubes of different lengths located inside the reactor. The axes of the tubes and the reactor are parallel and the tubes are equally spaced circumferentially inside the reactor. The extract was removed from each tube through channels isolated from each other and located in the bottom flange with cylindrical expansion, in which several layers of filter paper were placed. After passing through the filters the extract entered a restrictor designed to remove the eluent from the reactor. The initial pressure of carbon dioxide and the holding time of the extract were specified in the experiments. The level of the eluent sampling was set by the lengths of the tubes depending on the reactor height. A method of producing molybdenum complexes was described. It was experimentally shown that at an initial pressure of 20 MPa and a given holding time a difference from the natural content of Mo isotopes for given heights of extract sampling depending on the reactor height was observed in extracts removed through filters. The ranges of deviation of the content of molybdenum isotopes in extracts from natural one were determined. 展开更多

The results show that supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) is more effective than Soxhlet extraction (SE), with higher amounts and greater varieties of hydrocarbons and soluble organic matter becoming extractive. Supercritical CO2 extraction was employed to separate simulated and real bio-oils. Effects of extraction pressure, temperature and adsorbents on distribution coefficient (or enrichment coefficient) of five representative compounds were investigated using a simulated bio-oil, which was composed of acetic acid (AC), propanoic acid (PA), furfural (FR), acetylacetone (AA) and 2-methoxyphenol (MP). The distribution coefficients of AA, FR and MP between super-critical CO2 phase and liquid phase were bigger than 1.5, while those of AC and PA characteristic of relatively strong polarity were less than 1. Temperature and pressure also had impacts on the distribution coefficients of AA, FR and MP, especially remarkable for AA. The extraction of simulated bio-oil spiked on three adsorbents shows that adsorbents influence extraction efficiency and selectivity by changing intermolecular forces. High extraction pressure and relative low temperature are beneficial to reduce the water content in the extract. In addition, the feasibility of supercritical CO2 extraction of real bio-oil was examined. After extraction in the extraction fraction total ketones increased from 14.1% to 21.15~25.40%, phenols from 10.74% to 31.32~41.25%, and aldehydes from 1.92% to 3.95~8.46%, while the acids significantly dropped from 28.15% to 6.92~12.32%, and water from 35.90% to 6.64~4.90%. In view of extraction efficiency, the optimal extraction temperature was determined to be 55℃. Extraction efficiency of the real bio-oil increased with rising pressure. The maximal extraction efficiency of real bio-oil on water-free basis could reach to 88.6%. After scCO2 extraction, the calorific value and stability of the extract fraction evidently increased and the acidity slight decreased with nearly 100% volatility below 140℃, suggesting potentially applicable as substitute for engine fuel. 展开更多

To this aim the orange essential oil was represented by a mixture of limonene, linalool and β-caryophyllene, selected to represent the classes of monoterpenes, oxygenated terpenes and sesquiterpenes respectively. Three poly(vinyl acetate)(PVAc)oligomers with controlled molecular weight and narrow molecular distribution are synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer(RAFT)polymerization.The effects of the reaction temperature and the added amount of initiator of the PVAc polymerization are discussed.In addition,the phase behavior of the prepared PVAc in pressured CO2 is determined via the cloud point method.The results indicate that the cloud point of PVAc increases with the increase in the molecular weight,the PVAc concentration,and the temperature.The cloud point pressures for the PVAc mass concentration of 0.12%with the molecular weight of 1 550,2 120,and 2 960 g/mol are 13.48,13.83 and 15.43 MPa,respectively,at the temperature of 35℃.It reveals that the solubility of PVAc in ScCO2 at relatively low pressure is remarkably limited. 展开更多

深部煤层封存CO_(2)增产CH_(4)产出过程中,处于超临界状态的CO_(2)(SCCO_(2))与煤中矿物质发生反应,改变煤的孔隙性,进而影响煤层封存CO_(2)的效果和甲烷增产效果。为发现SCCO_(2)–H_(2)O–煤岩作用对煤中孔隙的影响特征,以焦煤为研究... 深部煤层封存CO_(2)增产CH_(4)产出过程中,处于超临界状态的CO_(2)(SCCO_(2))与煤中矿物质发生反应,改变煤的孔隙性,进而影响煤层封存CO_(2)的效果和甲烷增产效果。为发现SCCO_(2)–H_(2)O–煤岩作用对煤中孔隙的影响特征,以焦煤为研究对象,开展了不同含水条件下的超临界CO_(2)改造煤实验,基于矿物组成和孔隙性测定结果,对比煤中主要矿物质和不同尺度的孔裂隙变化的差异,探讨了不同含水状态下SCCO_(2)流体对孔裂隙性的作用机制。研究表明:①SCCO_(2)作用后,煤体表面粗糙、疏松,且由于矿物溶蚀使得一些裂隙得到贯通,微裂隙连通性增强。②SCCO_(2)流体对煤具有“扩孔”作用,表现为微、小孔含量下降,中、大孔占比升高,也即微、小孔隙向大孔隙的转化,且孔隙连通性改善;进一步发现,萃余煤吸附孔的分形维数稍微增加,粗糙度增大,而渗流孔的分形维数显著降低,复杂性和非均质性降低。③SCCO_(2)对煤中碳酸盐类矿物的溶解性最好,其次是黏土矿物,且随着含水率增加,萃余煤中的碳酸盐矿物占比先增加后减小。SCCO_(2)使干燥基态、饱和水态煤样中碳酸盐矿物显著溶解,有效改善了孔隙结构,且对饱和水态煤样作用效果更好。空气干燥基态煤样经SCCO_(2)作用后,新生成的白云石矿物聚集在孔喉中造成堵孔效应,缩小原有大孔隙尺寸,是引起不同含水性煤孔隙差异性变化的主要原因。 展开更多

为提升超临界二氧化碳(supercritical carbon dioxide,S-CO_(2))布雷顿循环系统中印刷电路板式换热器(printed circuit heat exchanger,PCHE)的流动传热综合性能,该文通过数值模拟的方法,基于一种全蚀刻工艺的新型矩形截面PCHE,建立以... 为提升超临界二氧化碳(supercritical carbon dioxide,S-CO_(2))布雷顿循环系统中印刷电路板式换热器(printed circuit heat exchanger,PCHE)的流动传热综合性能,该文通过数值模拟的方法,基于一种全蚀刻工艺的新型矩形截面PCHE,建立以冷热通道换热单元为研究对象的数学物理模型。研究不同运行工况下,通道内扰流格栅间距对S-CO_(2)流动传热特性的影响机理和影响规律。结果表明:不同格栅间距的热通道内S-CO_(2)的流速均沿程逐渐减小,而冷通道内S-CO_(2)的流速反而沿程逐渐增大。冷热通道内的流动摩擦阻力系数(f)和努塞尔数(Nu)均随着格栅间距的增大而逐渐增大,但不同格栅间距的冷通道内的f和Nu均大于其对应的热通道内的f和Nu。当格栅间距为5.97 mm时,矩形截面通道具有相对最优的综合性能,可以在阻力损失较小的情况下实现强化换热。研究结果可为全蚀刻工艺矩形截面PCHE的性能提升和结构优化提供理论依据和数据支撑。 展开更多

针对超临界二氧化碳(SupercriticalCarbon Dioxide,S-CO_(2))润滑波箔型止推箔片气体动压轴承,通过反向传播(Back Propagation,BP)神经网络算法提出S-CO_(2)的物性模型,并考虑轴承工作时的非理想气体效应,提出考虑湍流效应气体润滑模型... 针对超临界二氧化碳(SupercriticalCarbon Dioxide,S-CO_(2))润滑波箔型止推箔片气体动压轴承,通过反向传播(Back Propagation,BP)神经网络算法提出S-CO_(2)的物性模型,并考虑轴承工作时的非理想气体效应,提出考虑湍流效应气体润滑模型、箔片结构力学模型和气膜平均温升计算方法,对止推箔片气体动压轴承的静动态特性进行研究,并分析不同结构参数对箔片气体轴承静动态特性的影响规律.结果表明,本文提出的物性模型准确度高,相关系数高达99.997%.以S-CO_(2)为润滑介质的止推箔片气体动压轴承具有更高的承载力,且在适当范围内减小最小初始气膜厚度或增加膜厚比可以提高轴承的承载力.以S-CO_(2)为介质的止推箔片气体动压轴承的动态刚度系数和动态阻尼系数均远高于常温常压空气介质下的止推箔片气体动压轴承.随着最小初始气膜厚度减小,轴承的动态刚度系数和动态阻尼系数均迅速增加. 展开更多

Morphology of hydraulic fracture surface has significant effects on oil and gas flow,proppant migration and fracture closure,which plays an important role in oil and gas fracturing stimulation.In this paper,we analyzed the fracture surface characteristics induced by supercritical carbon dioxide(SC-CO_(2))and water in open-hole and perforation completion conditions under triaxial stresses.A simple calculation method was proposed to quantitatively analyze the fracture surface area and roughness in macro-level based on three-dimensional(3D)scanning data.In micro-level,scanning electron micrograph(SEM)was used to analyze the features of fracture surface.The results showed that the surface area of the induced fracture increases with perforation angle for both SC-CO_(2)and water fracturing,and the surface area of SC-CO_(2)-induced fracture is 6.49%e58.57%larger than that of water-induced fracture.The fractal dimension and surface roughness of water-induced fractures increase with the increase in perforation angle,while those of SC-CO_(2)-induced fractures decrease with the increasing perforation angle.A considerable number of microcracks and particle peeling pits can be observed on SC-CO_(2)-induced fracture surface while there are more flat particle surfaces in water-induced fracture surface through SEM images,indicating that fractures tend to propagate along the boundary of the particle for SC-CO_(2)fracturing while water-induced fractures prefer to cut through particles.These findings are of great significance for analyzing fracture mechanism and evaluating fracturing stimulation performance. 展开更多
