Phenomenon of localized surface plasmon excitation at nanostructured materials has attracted much attention in recent decades for their wide applications in single molecule detection,surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and nano-plasmonics.In addition to the excitation by external light field,an electron beam can also induce the local surface plasmon excitation.Nowadays,electron energy loss spectroscopy(EELS)technique has been increasingly employed in experiment to investigate the surface excitation characteristics of metallic nanoparticles.However,a present theoretical analysis tool for electromagnetic analysis based on the discrete dipole approximation(DDA)method can only treat the case of excitation by light field.In this work we extend the DDA method for the calculation of EELS spectrum for arbitary nanostructured materials.We have simulated EELS spectra for different incident locations of an electron beam on a single silver nanoparticle,the simulated results agree with an experimental measurement very well.The present method then provides a computation tool for study of the local surface plasmon excitation of metallic nanoparticles induced by an electron beam. 展开更多

Plasmonic Field Enhancement for Vibration Spectroscopy at Metal/Water Interfaces

Electrochemical (EC) reactions play vital roles in many disciplines, and its molecular-level understanding is highly desired, in particular under reactions. The vibration spectroscopy is a powerful in situ technique for chemical analysis, yet its application to EC reactions is hindered by the strong attenuation of infrared (IR) light in both electrodes and electrolytes. Here we demonstrate that by incorporating appropriate sub-wavelength plasmonic structures at the metal electrode, the IR field at the EC interface can be greatly enhanced via the excitation of surface plasmon. This scheme facilitates in situ vibrational spectroscopic studies, especially using the surface-specific sum-frequency generation technique. 展开更多

Multiple resonant excitations of surface plasmons in a graphene stratified slab are realized by Otto configuration at terahertz frequencies. The proposed graphene stratified slab consists of alternating dielectric layers and graphene sheets, and is sandwiched between a prism and another semi-infinite medium. Optical response and field distribution are determined by the transfer matrix method with the surface current density boundary condition.Multiple resonant excitations appear on the angular reflection spectrum, and are analyzed theoretically via the phase-matching condition. Furthermore, the effects of the system parameters are investigated. Among them, the Fermi levels can tune the corresponding resonances independently. The proposed concept can be engineered for promising applications, including angular selective or multiplex filters, multiple channel sensors, and directional delivery of energy. 展开更多
