Based on M.A.K.Halliday's systemic-functional grammar,the paper puts forward some ideas on how to develop reading skills,analyzing how the ideational,interpersonal and textual functions are reflected and their interrelationship in reading materials,with an attempt to improve the reading ability.

A Review of the Development of Systemic-Functional Grammar

Cohesion Analysis inThe Water Babies --Based on Systemic-Functional Grammar

Under the guidance of Systemic-Functional Grammar(SFG),cohesion is applied to analyze the selected context.Cohesion plays a great role in organizing a whole context and it can be further divided into grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion.Main ideas of cohesion are illustrated and made it for application,which employs British children's literature-The Water Babies as the object.The research method adopted here is mainly quantitative.Through analyzing selected sections,it is obvious that cohesion helps readers understand the contexts better.Besides,the use of cohesion makes the context more precise and compact.For context,the role of cohesion is irreplaceable.

An Exploration of Interpersonal Meanings in Advertising Discourse from Functional Grammar Perspective

Interpersonal function is one of the three metafunctions of language. This paper investigates the interpersonal meanings in Chinese cosmetic advertising discourse from mood, modality and appraise the three aspects. Based on an exploratory study of data of six typical Chinese cosmetic advertising discourses, the paper claims that the distribution of mood and modality has close link with the interpersonal meaning in advertising. The Functional Grammar and Appraisal System help to reveal the interpersonal meanings of the discourse concerned.

An Overview of Systematic-Functional Grammar

The key notions in Halliday's Systematic Grammar and Functional Grammar are first summarized, and then contrasted with Chomsky's Transformational-Generative Grammar. Results show that Systematic-Functional Grammar could be viewed as complementa ry to Transformational-Generative Grammar. They combine to reveal the whole picture of language.

Metaphor in Advertising Language from Systemic Functional Grammar Perspective

A Comparative Study of Two English Versions of Xunzi's Encouraging Learning from the Perspective of Functional Grammar

Encouraging Learning,though written by Xunzi two thousand years ago,still has its practical meaning on the ground that it encourages a considerable number of people to learn,to know how to learn.However,there are only two translations,translated respectively by Burton Waston and John Konblock,available.M.A.K.Halliday holds that translation,generally speaking,is to seek the equivalence between source language and target language in interpersonal function,ideational function as well as textual function.A comparative analysis between two English versions will be delivered,aiming to,first of all,show how a functional analysis can provide insight into the study of translation and test the applicability of systematic functional linguistic in discourse analysis and translation studies;second,find out the merits and demerits of two versions through comparison.The conclusions are,firstly,both versions all have their merits and demerits to speak of but to realize the equivalence in ideational function,interpersonal function and textual function,both versions still call for further improvement.Secondly,in the translation of Chinese ancient classics,the obscure or unintelligible words as well as background information related to the author or time are all needed to be verified before engaging in actual translation;finally,that Functional Grammar can provide a new perspective for translation study is undeniable and self-evident.

Comparative Analysis of Two Texts from the Perspective of Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG)

Analyze Obama’s State of the Union 2015——From the Perspective of Halliday’s Systemic Functional Grammar

The present study uses textual function of metafunction in Halliday’s Systemic Functional Grammar as the theoretical framework,focusing on Thematic structures of political discourses.This thesis moves on to analyze the State of the Union Address and its Chinese version from the perspective of a contrastive study,aiming to find out English-Chinese translation approaches.The study findings give rise to two implications for E-C translation in Obama’s Address For one thing,a thematic structure,without any change of word orders,can be directly translated into a SV pattern in a topic-comment structure.For another,it has to be restructured into non-SV patterns.It helps to apply the strategy in the target text of Obama’s State of the Union Address.

A Comparative Study of the Translated Versions of Song You Renby Ezra Pound and Qiu Kean—From the Perspective of Functional Grammar

As one genre of literature,poetry is the elite in both Chinese language and its culture. With its unique characteristics of metrical and form regulations and the beauty of its simplicity and conciseness,Chinese Tang poetry is one of the brightest pearls in the world literature treasury.Translating as a purposeful activity was originated from the functionalist approaches to translation.From the perspective of functional grammar,this thesis attempts to study two translation versions of Song You Ren written by Li Bai. More emphasis has been put on the similarities and differentiations of the textual analysis. Through the analysis and compari son between the two translation versions,it is found that functional grammar is not only helpful to have a deep understanding of the discourse,but will also throw some light upon the practice of translation.

现代汉语隐性否定研究综述

隐性否定以“无显性否定形式”和“具有否定意义”为条件,学界大体从概念界定、表达形式、语用功能以及新理论视角等方面对隐性否定加以研究。对目前的隐性否定研究成果进行梳理和总结,以求明确学界在隐性否定研究领域的现状和不足,从而确定接下来的研究方向和目标。

说古书中“夷”的一种特殊用法

古书中“夷”的用法很多,大多数都比较明确,较为复杂的是所谓“发声”的“夷”(郑玄说)或“语助”的“夷”(王引之说)。近年清华简等材料中也出现了少数难以理解的“夷”,有的学者就沿用“发声”或“语助”的成说来说明其用法。对此加以重新检讨,并结合于鬯《香草续校书》对相关用例的理解,补充上博简相关通假用例,可知这些所谓“发声”或“语助”用法的“夷”都应当读为“逮”,表示“及”的意思。这样,《周礼》《孟子》以及清华简当中相关用例都能够得到很好的解释。

基于语料库的《政府工作报告》英译本情态动词的人际意义研究

情态是表达人际意义的重要语义系统。《政府工作报告》英译本受到学界广泛关注,但大多数研究集中在原文和各种译本之间的比较上,对于翻译所传达的主次人际意义鲜有深入讨论。鉴于此,基于自建语料库,运用Halliday的功能语法,从情态动词的角度对2013—2024年《政府工作报告》英译本中不同语态进行分析,发现:(1)在《政府工作报告》英译本中,非中动态主动句是主要传达政府情态意义的句式;(2)《政府工作报告》英译本中we will、we should和we must占比分别为36.83%、6.75%和3.11%,其中主要人际意义以we will和we should为主,体现了对英语读者阅读习惯的尊重,传达了中国政府谦虚低调的态度和团结带领中国人民共同发展的强烈意愿,而次要人际意义以we must为主,强化了中国政府的严肃性和权威性。通过情态动词的人际意义分析可为翻译实践提供一些参考,有助于译者更好地传达政治经济文本所期望传递的人际意义。
