This paper aims to explore how a veteran teacher organizes online teaching initiated by the pandemic and how she deals with the problems in online teacher-student verbal interaction.By analyzing a corpus of 20 audio-recorded online lessons between a math teacher and her students during the COVID-19 pandemic from April 11 to May 10,2022,four interactional segments are selected as the focus of the study. The results of the conversation analysis of the segments showed that students’modesty, lack of confidence, lack of ability, and network delay are the main factors affecting online teacher-student interaction.By encouraging students to answer questions, enlightening students to give answers, enriching students’answers, and entertaining the teaching atmosphere(“4Es”strategies),the teacher solved the problems successfully. The findings from this study can provide pedagogical experience and implications for practical teaching. 展开更多

Teacher-student collaborative assessment(TSCA)aims to address the challenges of responding to students’work in the Production-Oriented Approach:low efficiency and poor effectiveness. As part of a bigger project carried out in a Chinese university over a period of three years, the present study explored how the teacher prepared and implemented TSCA in class, especially with a focus on how she determined the assessing objective and worked collaboratively with her students in class to achieve it,using the students’written and translated texts as examples.By adopting the dialectical research(DR)method, this paper collected qualitative data such as teaching plans, classroom recordings, and reflective journals of the teacher-researcher(the author),along with students’written drafts and translated texts.TSCA theory and classroom practice have been refined simultaneously by means of putting theory into practice and reflecting upon it.The optimized pre-class and in-class procedures may shed some light on applying TSCA to L2 classrooms. 展开更多

Based upon sociocultural theory, this study investigates the dynamics of the teacher's roles and learner autonomy in the process of scaffolding in teacher-student negotiation of meaning in an EFL classroom, The participants were 25 undergraduate students and a Chinese teacher of English at a university in China. The teacher-student dialogue was the central mechanism mediating the construction of negotiation of meaning and form in language learning. The analysis of classroom discourse and the teacher's retrospection from an interview illustrated the teacher's different roles in interaction, where scaffolding acted as a structured pedagogical tool. The study revealed that the learners were afforded assistance to progress from other- regulation to self-regulation, and consequently, the teacher exploited opportunities to enhance learner autonomy in negotiation of spaces for autonomy in classroom teaching. The study has probed into the significance of the teacher's capacity of controlling scaffolding effectively and generated implications for teacher development and learner training. 展开更多

This paper reports a case study designed to understand classroom interactional processes in a Chinese university. The case study focuses on scaffolding in teacher-student interaction as well as the process of shifting the responsibility from the teacher to student. Our first aim was to determine how teacher-student interactions in two oral English classes were distributed, and our second aim was to determine how the two teachers perceive their roles in teacher-student interaction and how their perceptive differences were reflected in teacher-student interaction in their oral English classes. The data were collected through videotaping and an interview. Results show that distribution patterns of teacher-student interactions were mainly different in the two oral English classes, and the role perception differences of the two teachers were partly reflected in their teacher-student interaction. The study suggests that the process of shifting the responsibility from teacher to student is a complex process which demands great efforts from teachers as well as willingness from students. 展开更多

College English teaching in China has long been criticized for its orientation to examination that consequently brings about negative learning attitude and ineffective learning achievement.Chinese educationists have brought forward several ap proaches to solve this problem but little has been changed due to the cultural influences. This paper analyzes the roots of examoriented education system in China in perspective of culture by comparing the Sino-U.S.cultural elements in depth in tradition al culture, learning and teaching motivation,teacher-student relationship and learners'engagement in class. This paper finally poses two suggestions on how to change the current situation gradually:(1) Focus on the washback of evaluation system on edu cational concepts.(2) Transform the product-evaluation to process-evaluation gradually by standardizing the current evaluation approaches, especially the standards of process-evaluation. 展开更多

A nationally representative sample of 1640 Chinese urban adolescents (mean age=14.5 years) and their parents and teachers were surveyed to examine the associations between relationships with teachers and parents and adolescents' developmental outcomes such as academic performance, psychological well-being, altruistic behaviors, and misconduct. Results showed that the quality of adolescents' relationships with teachers was highly correlated with adolescent outcomes, in most cases more so than for relationships with parents. Furthermore, such associations were the same across both genders and three grade levels. These findings suggest that teachers may play an especially significant role in Chinese adolescent development. This study adds to the small but growing literature on the importance of teachers as well as other non-parental adults in adolescent psychosocial development. 展开更多

This paper presents a qualitative study of immigrant Chinese teachers’professional identity and beliefs about the teacher-student relationship in an intercultural context.Theoretically, this study takes its departure from a sociocultural perspective on understanding professional identity. The empirical analysis in the study drew mainly upon ethnographic interviews with a group of Chinese language teachers in Denmark concerning their life experiences, perceptions, and beliefs. The results of this study suggest that teachers’beliefs about their roles as teachers and about student-teacher relationships are shaped by both their prior experiences and backgrounds and the current social and cultural contexts in which they are situated.Changes of context(e.g.,from China to Denmark)often lead to a transformation of their professional identity and beliefs.Being a teacher in an intercultural context often exposes them to the confrontation of diverse challenges and dilemmas. On one hand, teachers in this study generally experienced a transformation from being a moral role model, subject expert, authority and parental role to being a learning facilitator and culture worker. On the other hand, they developed diverse individualized coping strategies to handle student-teacher interactions and other aspects of teachers’professional identity. 展开更多

The analysis of dissolved gas in oil can provide an important basis for transformer fault diagnosis. In order to improve the accuracy of transformer fault diagnosis,a method based on the relational teacher-student network(R-TSN)is proposed by analyzing the relationship between the dissolved gas in the oil and the fault type.R-TSN replaces the original hard labels with soft labels, and uses it to measure the similarity between different samples in the space,to a certain extent,it can obtain the hidden feature information in the samples, and clarify the classification boundary.Through the identification experiment, the effect of R-TSN diagnosis model is analyzed, and the influence of the compound fault of discharge and thermal on the diagnosis model is studied. This paper compares R-TSN with support vector machines(SVMs),decision trees and multilayer perceptron models in transformer fault diagnosis.Experimental results show that R-TSN has better performance than the above methods. After adding compound faults in the sample set,the accuracy rate can still reach 86.0%. 展开更多

Considering that communication is an extremely important element in modem university education, it is of utmost importance to know how successful student-teacher communication can be achieved. In an attempt to explain it, this paper gives a definition of educational communication focusing on key aspects of student-teacher relationship and development of skills necessary for complete and independent communication. Student-teacher relationship is mostly determined by the first contact, as explained in Heider's attribution theory, because assigning attributes to other people and trying to understand their behavior is essential part of human nature. Through the example of pedagogical workshops, the paper demonstrates the importance of the interactive learning at university level, which leads towards establishing effective communication between teachers and students.Considering that communication is an extremely important element in modem university education, it is of utmost importance to know how successful student-teacher communication can be achieved. This paper explores how the body discourses constructed by patriarchal culture influence individual's body viewpoint and form teachers' body image in educational fields in gender perspectives of feminisms and the concepts of power and discourse from Foucanlt. At the same time I will also demonstrate that the body politics of women teachers in secondary education do not represent the stable and rigid hierarchy of traditional teacher-student relationship but shape the subjectivity which are deployed and suffused as a capillary action by the disciplines and power relations interwoven by gender, sexuality, class and age throughout the individual's cognition and behavior, thus produce self-monitoring in the meantime monitoring others for social function. Finally, I will argue that how the subjectivity under the social structure and cultural norms generates an individual's agency of resistance and subversion to existing gender structures through reflectivity in the cracks produced by the collision, fragmentation, consultation within different discourses, and then finds the temporary strategic and political positioning and identity. 展开更多
