In view of the fact that most college English teachers in China invest a great deal of time and effort responding to students’ writing, but find students improve so little in their writing skills, I venture to put forward an alternative way of teaching writing in the paper, that is, teaching writing through small group conferencing. Compared with the traditional teaching methods small group conferencing has following advantages: (1) Saving evaluation time; (2) Providing better feedback; (3) Helping students critique their writing, etc. Since many empirical studies and teaching practices demonstrate that small group conferencing is an effective and efficient way of teaching writing, we have good reason to believe that it will become widespread in the college English teaching in China. \; 展开更多

Social Work students typically enroll in the required practice methods courses that are specified by the Council on Social Work Education. At least in the majority of BSW Programs, these practice methods courses are divided into micro-level and macro-level sequences. Individual and family systems are covered in the former sequence, while communities and organizations are the systems of focus in the latter sequence. The group system is often minimized and/or completely ignored in the process, even though there may be some reference made to groups in both practice methods sequences. Consequently, the mezzo-level system of groups is only given "lip-service" in the dyadic division of micro and macro-level practice. Furthermore, students often do not have the opportunity to practice in group settings, much less, develop competency in these professional venues. This paper describes a teaching format used in a BSW Program in an effort to ensure student competency as required in a Groups Practice course. The triangular model includes: (1) Classroom teaching of theory; (2) Practice of group dynamics; and (3) Supervision by instructors and MSW students. 展开更多

The theory of cooperative learning which is applied in English reading class in senior high school and change the traditional teacher- centered teaching type. Cooperative learning as a breakthrough and complement against traditional classroom instruction is an efficient teaching approach, which can promote learner's cognitive ability and improve their competence to use language. Meanwhile, the increasing number of students has posed new problems and requirements for the old teaching method: the English teachers are facing more students and larger classes. In Zhejiang University, City College (ZUCC) the credit system and course selection has challenged the English teachers on a higher level. Every English teacher is facing classes of more than 40 students from various departments with sharp contrast among individual students in their English proficiency level and local background. How can every student actively participate in teaching activity so as to achieve better performance in English class? Many teachers, therefore, have adopted team activity and cooperative teaching method to stimulate student participation in class. Inspired by the management theory to optimize student groups into independent teams, the concept of team construction and team management has been introduced into College English Teaching in ZUCC, which has given new meaning to team activity--it will become an interdisciplinary teaching method with its own feature. 展开更多

Crowdsourcing is widely used in various fields to collect goods and services from large participants.Evaluating teaching quality by collecting feedback from experts or students after class is not only delayed but also not accurate.In this paper,we present a crowdsourcing-based framework to evaluate teaching quality in the classroom using a weighted average operator to aggregate information from students’questionnaires described by linguistic 2-tuple terms.Then we define crowd grade based on similarity degree to distinguish contribution from different students and minimize the abnormal students’impact on the evaluation.The crowd grade would be updated at the end of each feedback so it can guarantee the evaluation accurately.Moreover,a simulated case is shown to illustrate how to apply this framework to assess teaching quality in the classroom.Finally,we developed a prototype and carried out some experiments on a series of real questionnaires and two sets of modified data.The results show that teachers can locate the weak points of teaching and furthermore to identify the abnormal students to improve the teaching quality.Meanwhile,our approach provides a strong tolerance for the abnormal student to make the evaluation more accurate. 展开更多

Teaching target culture has been widely acknowledged as an indispensible component in the overall foreign language education. This paper presents a feasible way to effectively integrate cultural teaching into traditional classroom instruction by using Moran's theoretical frameworks, namely, the "Cultural Knowings Framework" and "Experiential Learning Cycle", as the foundation and guidance of the course design. It highlights the combination of teaching culture with the training of the basic language skills, adding a cultural dimension to the language learning. This teaching method can fully arouse the students' attention to cultural learning and provide more meaningful activities to physically and mentally engage students both in class and after class. By going through a series of assigned tasks individually or collectively, the students not only obtain the desired cultural knowledge but strengthen their language ability as well as other skills pivotal and necessary for becoming independent and lifetime learners. 展开更多
