Compared with the conventional Charpy impact test method, the oscillographic impact test can help in the behavioral analysis of materials during the fracture process. In this study, the trade-off relationship between the strength and toughness of a DZ2 axle steel at various tempering temperatures and the cause of the improvement in impact toughness was evaluated. The tempering process dramatically influenced carbide precipitation behavior, which resulted in different aspect ratios of carbides.Impact toughness improved along with the rise in tempering temperature mainly due to the increase in energy required in impact crack propagation. The characteristics of the impact crack propagation process were studied through a comprehensive analysis of stress distribution, oscilloscopic impact statistics, fracture morphology, and carbide morphology. The poor impact toughness of low-tempering-temperature specimens was attributed to the increased number of stress concentration points caused by carbide morphology in the small plastic zone during the propagation process, which resulted in a mixed distribution of brittle and ductile fractures on the fracture surface. 展开更多

Based on the analysis of different theory for glass tempering process, the“structural theory”with stress relaxation and structural relaxation effects was selected to investigate the tempering of flat glass quantificationally. The geometrical model with small size and non-homogeneous mesh were considered to build the finite element models according to the characteristics of stress field. The tempering process of flat glass with12 mm thickness was calculated with the verified finite element model. The transient and permanent stress of the central area, edge and corner end of the flat glass are obtained and analyzed. From the calculation results of basic case, the transient tensile stress at the upper surface of the central area, the center point of edge, the edge of edge, the edge of corner were 14.30,18.94,40.76 and 34.75 MPa,respectively. The transient tensile stress at these points were dangerous to promote the glass to break during the tempering. In addition, the point at the diagonal line of symmetry plane in the thickness direction, which is 14 mm from corner, has the maximum permanent tensile stress about 70.01 MPa in the flat glass after tempering. Thus,it is indicated that the corner is the weakest region in the tempered glass. 展开更多

Cold-rolled martensitic steel is an important type of advanced high-strength steel for automobile production. With martensite as its primary microstructure constituent, martensitic steel possesses exceptional high strength despite its low alloy content. As the strength of cold-rolled martensitic steel increases, the martensite and carbon content also increases, leading to a decrease in bending properties and toughness. In this paper, the effect of various tempering parameters on the bending property and impact toughness of a quenched cold-rolled martensitic steel sheet was studied. It is found that after quenching, the ductility and impact toughness of the experimental steel are improved using low-temperature heat treatment. The optimal tempering conditions for ductility and toughness are analyzed. 展开更多

The novel martensitic heat-resistant steel G115 was designed for thick-section boiler components of ultra-supercritical(USC) power plants at 630-650 ℃.The impact of the quenching and tempering processes on the properties and microstructure of G115 steel was explored. The samples that were quenched and tempered twice had a higher tensile strength at room temperature and 650 ℃,and the impact energy was significantly improved. The strength and impact energy increased in proportion to the increase in the first quenching temperature. The microstructure differences between the single and double quenched and tempered samples were examined using metallographic microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The grain size of the double quenched and tempered samples was finer than that of the single quenched and tempered samples, and the tempered martensite lath is more visible, as are the carbides and other precipitates, which are finer and more uniformly distributed. As the first quenching temperature increased, the grains became coarser but more uniform. 展开更多

A self-developed electromagnetic induction-heating device was used to investigate the variation in the microstructure and properties of X80 pipeline steel in the rapid induction tempering process at different process parameters. The effects of the tempering condition on toughness, microstructure, size and distribution of precipitates of X80 pipeline steel were observed using a metallographic microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Compared with the samples prepared via traditional tempering techniques, results show that the samples prepared via rapid induction tempering had improved performances. When the heating temperature is 590 ℃, at a holding time of 90 s,it was found that acicular ferrite was refined, carbonite precipitation was small, and precipitates were evenly distributed in the matrix. The low-temperature impact energy, also known as the impact absorption energy, at -40 ℃ was found to be 430.5 J for the rapid induction tempering samples and 323.2 J for the traditionally tempered sample. The low-temperature impact energy at -60 ℃ was found to be 351.3 J for the rapid induction tempered sample and 312.1 J for the tradition tempering sample. 展开更多

The stability of ultra-fine microstructure during tempering at 650 degreesC was investigated on a Nb-containing steel. The steel had undergone 5 passes controlled rolling, then was relaxed lair cooled) to 730 degreesC: and cooled in water. The evolution of microstructure was that, in early stage of tempering, no obvious change was detected by means of optical microscopy while dislocation cells were formed inside bainitic laths. With further tempering, bainitic laths started to coalesce in some regions. Finally, polygonal ferrite was formed while hardness decreased dramatically. Some samples taken from the same primary plate were reheated at 930 degreesC for 0.5 h followed by quenching into water before tempering. Despite their lower original hardness, the reheated samples softened Faster during tempering. Ferrite was quickly formed in the reheated samples. These results indicate that the evolution of microstructures towards equilibrium during tempering of the steel is mainly determined by whether dislocations are pinned rather than the dislocation density. 展开更多

Tempering is an important process for T/P92 ferritic heat-resistant steel from the viewpoint of microstructure control, as it facili- tates the formation of final tempered martensite under serving conditions. In this study, we have gained deeper insights on the mechanism underlying the microstructural evolution during tempering treatment, including the precipitation of carbides and the coarsening of martensite laths, as systematically analyzed by optical microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron mi- croscopy. The chemical composition of the precipitates was analyzed using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Results indicate the for- mation of M3C (cementite) precipitates under normalized conditions. However, they tend to dissolve within a short time of tempering, owing to their low thermal stability. This phenomenon was substantiated by X-ray diffraction analysis. Besides, we could observe the precipitation of fine carbonitrides (MX) along the dislocations. The mechanism of carbon diffusion controlled growth of M23C6 can be expressed by the Zener's equation. The movement of Y-junctions was determined to be the fundamental mechanism underlying the martensite lath coarsening process. Vickers hardness was estimated to determine their mechanical properties. Based on the comprehensive analysis of both the micro- structural evolution and hardness variation, the process of tempering can be separated into three steps. 展开更多

The tempering microstructure and mechanical properties of X80 steel used for heating-bent pipe were analyzed. The results show that the microstructure of X80 steel tempered at 550 ℃ and 600 ℃ is bainitic ferrite (BF)+granular bainite (GB), and partial ferrite laths in BF merge and broaden. The interior sub-lath boundary of some GB begins to disappear due to merging, the M/A constituent (a mixture of martensite plus retained austenite) in GB is orbicular. At the two tempering temperatures the tested X80 steel shows a certain degree of tempering stability. After being tempered at 650 ℃, the microstructure of X80 steel is GB+quasi-polygonal ferrite(QF), and the original BF laths have merged to form smaller GB crystal grains. The reason is that the steel shows better match of strength and toughness. After being tempered at 700 ℃ , the microstructure of X80 steel is composed mainly of QF, which can improve the plasticity but decline severely the yield strength of X80, and the M/A constituent assembles and grows up at the grain boundary of QF, resulting in excellent lower low-temperature toughness of X80. 展开更多

An internal state variable (ISV) framework is used to predict the rate and degree of strain relaxation associated with the stage I, low temperature tempering of martensite. A single variable tracks the change in volume between the tempered an untempered structures. The rate at which this occurs is taken to be a function of martensite fraction, temperature, degree of tempering, and carbon concentration. Experimental dilatometty data is used to both fit and validate the model. 展开更多

The microstructure evolution law and the structure of precipitates produced during the tempering of steel AerMet100 based on TEM observation and the calibration of diffraction spot were revealed. The electronic structure and the stability of the MoxCr2-xC phase were calculated using the plane-wave pseudo-potential method on basis of density functional theory.TEM observations show that the precipitation phases Fe3C and Fe2-xCx(x=0.05~0.14) between martensite lath are produced at 425 and 480 ℃,respectively. The increase of tempering temperature or time can lead to the redissolution of both phases Fe3C and Fe2-xCx,and also lead to the precipitation of the phase Cr2C in martensite lath. The calculation results of formation energies and the density of state(DOS) demonstrate that in point of MoxCr2-xC structures formed during tempering, the early precipitation phase is Cr2C and finally later evolves into Mo2C phase with diffusing of incorporation of Mo atom into the Cr2C crystal cell, lattice, which can results in a energy decreases of the structure MoxCr2-xC phase with the increase of x. 展开更多

The steel was quenched at 1150℃ and tempered at 520℃. The phase structures of the steel were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the hardness of specimens was measured. The volume fraction of carbides was counted by Image-Pro Plus software. The typical microstructures were observed by field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). Stable and meta-stable carbides were deduced by removing the existing phases one by one in the Fe-C equilibrium calculation. It is found that the precipitated carbides are bulk-like MC, long stripe-like M2C, fishbone-like M6C, and daisy-like M7C3 during the tempering process. The stable carbides are MC and M6C, but the meta-stable ones are M2C, M7C3, and M3C. 展开更多

Through the differentiating and integrating process, a mathematical model for tempering time effect on quenched steel was derived based on the attribute of state function and the general equation of Hollomon parameter, which correlates the tempering hardness with the tempering time at different tempering temperature. Using the established model, the linear relationship between the tempering hardness and the tempering time in logarithm was proved theoretically, and the tempering hardness for various tempering time was reduced to the measurement and calculation of a hardness experiment tempered for 1 h at different tempering temperatures. Moreover, the hardness of steel 42CrMo and T8Mn tempered for various times at 200-600℃ was calculated using this method. The predicted results are in good agreement with those of the available experiments. 展开更多

The tempering stability of three Fe–Cr–Mo–W–V hot forging die steels(DM, H21, and H13) was investigated through hardness measurements and transmission electron microscopy(TEM) observations. Both dilatometer tests and TEM observations revealed that DM steel has a higher tempering stability than H21 and H13 steels because of its substantial amount of M_2C(M represents metallic element) carbide precipitations. The activation energies of the M_2C carbide precipitation processes in DM, H21, and H13 steels are 236.4, 212.0, and 228.9 kJ/mol, respectively. Furthermore, the results indicated that vanadium atoms both increase the activation energy and affect the evolution of M_2C carbides, resulting in gradual dissolution rather than over-aging during tempering. 展开更多

The 00Cr13Ni5Mo2 supermartensitic stainless steel was first tempered at 570-730°C for 2 h to observe the microstructure and hardness changes. The tempering temperature was set to 600, 650, and 700°C, which is below, equal to, and above the austenite transformation start temperature, respectively, for each holding period to investigate the effects of tempering time on the structure and properties of the steel. The microstructure of the specimens was examined by optical microscopy and transmission electronic microscopy, and the phase composition was detected by X-ray diffraction. As expected, lath refinement was observed in the steel tempered at 700°C, and the refinement degree significantly depended on the tempering time. Contrary to normal steel softening by tempering, the hardness performance of the steel was significantly enhanced primarily because of the refinement of martensite laths after single-stage intercritical tempering. It is believed that the reverse transformation of martensite(α′) to austenite(γ) is responsible for the refinement. 展开更多

By taking 40Cr as a specific object, cold extrusion deformation behavior of medium carbon steel after quenching and tempering was studied by experimental works. The influence of deformation extent (10%-50%), cone angle of die (90 °-120 °), hardness after quenching and tempering (HRC21-29) and lubricated condition on the forming load was analyzed. The results show that there is no central bursting and micro crack in the inner of the extruded specimen, and the forming quality is good. The double-peak phenomenon takes place at the front-end of the specimen; the double-peak index increases with deformation extent, and larger deformation can avoid the double-peak phenomenon. The deformation extent is the most important influencing factor, and the lubricated condition almost has no influence, which means that the phosphate coating plus soap process is still a proper lubrication method for cold extrusion of medium carbon steel after quenching and tempering. By investigating the microscopic structure before and after deformation, the initial equiaxed grain is elongated in the extrusion direction, and this feature is more significant at the front-end of specimen. 展开更多

The microstruetural transformation of steels:20SiMn2V,20SiMn2VRE,40SiMn2V and 40SiMn2VRE during quenching and tempering have been examined by TEM,X-ray diffraction and dilatometer. It was shown that the addition of rare earth metals not only can refine the austenite grains of the low or medium carbon steels and packet of lath martensite and lath size, lower the M_s temperature, but can also raise the relative percentage of disloca- tion substructure of martensite in medium carbon steel, but there is little effect on volume frac- tion and thermal stability of retained austenite quenching and tempering structure of low or medium carbon steels. The rare earth metals may remarkably inhibit the decomposition of low carbon martensite during low temperature tempering, retard the precipitation of cementite plates in lath grains and delay the spheroidization of carbides. They may also restrain obvious- ly the precipitation and spheroidization of cementite in medium carbon martensite during high temperature tempering. 展开更多
