The shear failure of intact rock under thermo-mechanical(TM)coupling conditions is common,such as in enhanced geothermal mining and deep mine construction.Under the effect of a continuous engineering disturbance,shear...The shear failure of intact rock under thermo-mechanical(TM)coupling conditions is common,such as in enhanced geothermal mining and deep mine construction.Under the effect of a continuous engineering disturbance,shear-formed fractures are prone to secondary instability,posing a severe threat to deep engineering.Although numerous studies regarding three-dimensional(3D)morphologies of fracture surfaces have been conducted,the understanding of shear-formed fractures under TM coupling conditions is limited.In this study,direct shear tests of intact granite under various TM coupling conditions were conducted,followed by 3D laser scanning tests of shear-formed fractures.Test results demonstrated that the peak shear strength of intact granite is positively correlated with the normal stress,whereas it is negatively correlated with the temperature.The internal friction angle and cohesion of intact granite significantly decrease with an increase in the temperature.The anisotropy,roughness value,and height of the asperities on the fracture surfaces are reduced as the normal stress increases,whereas their variation trends are the opposite as the temperature increases.The macroscopic failure mode of intact granite under TM coupling conditions is dominated by mixed tensileeshear and shear failures.As the normal stress increases,intragranular fractures are developed ranging from a local to a global distribution,and the macroscopic failure mode of intact granite changes from mixed tensileeshear to shear failure.Finally,3D morphological characteristics of the asperities on the shear-formed fracture surfaces were analyzed,and a quadrangular pyramid conceptual model representing these asperities was proposed and sufficiently verified.展开更多
Parkinson’s disease(PD)is characterized by pathological spontaneous beta oscillations(13 Hz-35 Hz)often observed in basal ganglia(BG)composed of subthalamic nucleus(STN)and globus pallidus(GPe)populations.From the vi...Parkinson’s disease(PD)is characterized by pathological spontaneous beta oscillations(13 Hz-35 Hz)often observed in basal ganglia(BG)composed of subthalamic nucleus(STN)and globus pallidus(GPe)populations.From the viewpoint of dynamics,the spontaneous oscillations are related to limit cycle oscillations in a nonlinear system;here we employ the bifurcation analysis method to elucidate the generating mechanism of the pathological spontaneous beta oscillations underlined by coupling strengths and intrinsic properties of the STN-GPe circuit model.The results reveal that the increase of inter-coupling strength between STN and GPe populations induces the beta oscillations to be generated spontaneously,and causes the oscillation frequency to decrease.However,the increase of intra-coupling(self-feedback)strength of GPe can prevent the model from generating the oscillations,and dramatically increase the oscillation frequency.We further provide a theoretical explanation for the role played by the inter-coupling strength of GPe population in the generation and regulation of the oscillations.Furthermore,our study reveals that the intra-coupling strength of the GPe population provides a switching mechanism on the generation of the abnormal beta oscillations:for small value of the intra-coupling strength,STN population plays a dominant role in inducing the beta oscillations;while for its large value,the GPe population mainly determines the generation of this oscillation.展开更多
A series of saline soil-related problems,including salt expansion and collapse,frost heave and thaw settlement,threaten the safety of the road traffic and the built infrastructure in cold regions.This article presents...A series of saline soil-related problems,including salt expansion and collapse,frost heave and thaw settlement,threaten the safety of the road traffic and the built infrastructure in cold regions.This article presents a comprehensive review of the physical and mechanical properties,salt migration mechanisms of saline soil in cold environment,and the countermeasures in practice.It is organized as follows:(1)The basic physical characteristics;(2)The strength criteria and constitutive models;(3)Water and salt migration characteristics and mechanisms;and(4)Countermeasures of frost heave and salt expansion.The review provides a holistic perspective for recent progress in the strength characteristics,mechanisms of frost heave and salt expansion,engineering countermeasures of saline soil in cold regions.Future research is proposed on issues such as the effects of salt erosion on concrete and salt corrosion of metal under the joint action of evaporation and freeze-thaw cycles.展开更多
