A Comparative Study of Artificial Intelligence and Translation Software in Chinese-English Translation:A Focus on Literary and Technical Texts

In recent years,the domain of machine translation has experienced remarkable growth,particularly with the emergence of neural machine translation,which has significantly enhanced both the accuracy and fluency of translation.At the same time,AI also showed its tremendous advancement,with its capabilities now extending to assisting users in a multitude of tasks,including translation,garnering attention across various sectors.In this paper,the author selects representative sentences from both literary and scientific texts,and translates them using two translation software and two AI tools for comparison.The results show that all four translation tools are very efficient and can help with simple translation tasks.However,the accuracy of terminology needs to be improved,and it is difficult to make adjustments based on the characteristics of the target language.It is worth mentioning that one of the advantages of AI is its interactivity,which allows it to modify the translation according to the translator’s needs.

Study on the Textual Coherence Function of Conjunctions in Political Texts and Their Translation Reconstruction

The assessment of translation quality in political texts is primarily based on achieving effective communication.Throughout the translation process,it is essential to not only accurately convey the original content but also effectively transform the structural mechanisms of the source language.In the translation reconstruction of political texts,various textual cohesion methods are often employed,with conjunctions serving as a primary means for semantic coherence within text units.

Text type, language function and translation strategy of film lines

For different texts, different translation strategies should be adopted. This paper makes a case study on lines from Disney animation picture Mulan in the light of functional concept of translation. And it draws a conclusion that in the process of film translation, the translator is allowed to make some adaptations to make the translated version more appropriate in the original context, and that the translator is supposed to have both ＂semantic awareness＂ and ＂functional awareness＂, to achieve the equivalence between the SL text and TL text functionally.

A Functionalist Approach to the Translation of Allusions in Chinese Tourism Texts

Efficient Text Extraction Algorithm Using Color Clustering for Language Translation in Mobile Phone

Many Text Extraction methodologies have been proposed, but none of them are suitable to be part of a real system implemented on a device with low computational resources, either because their accuracy is insufficient, or because their performance is too slow. In this sense, we propose a Text Extraction algorithm for the context of language translation of scene text images with mobile phones, which is fast and accurate at the same time. The algorithm uses very efficient computations to calculate the Principal Color Components of a previously quantized image, and decides which ones are the main foreground-background colors, after which it extracts the text in the image. We have compared our algorithm with other algorithms using commercial OCR, achieving accuracy rates more than 12% higher, and performing two times faster. Also, our methodology is more robust against common degradations, such as uneven illumination, or blurring. Thus, we developed a very attractive system to accurately separate foreground and background from scene text images, working over low computational resources devices.

Intercultural Communication and Chinese Tourism Texts Translation

A Study on C-E Translation of Product Introductory Texts on Company Websites Under Skopos Theory

This paper takes the C-E translation of product introductory texts on official websites of three mobile phone makers as the study object under the Skopos theory, with an aim to identify and analyze the distinctive translation features of such special type of text. The exhausted parse and analysis bring out the findings that there exists a significant translation difference between the Chinese and English-version product introductory texts on official websites. It is found that Chinese introductory texts are more inclined to rely on exquisite words and redundant expressions to describe products’ features and functions, while switching to the corresponding English version, simple vocabularies and compact sentence structure are more frequent. Hereafter, this paper raises two practical guidelines to instruct translation activities in business contexts.

Coherence through theme equivalence： With reference to text translation

Theme is the point of departure of a message, and it is a textual phenomenon. It can interpret the comprehension and production of texts. This paper first makes a thematic analysis of the English original text and the Chinese target text, and then makes a comparative study of them in terms of the textual properties. It is found that in reproduction of target text, theme equivalence can not only help to realize the coherence of the target text with the same effect on receptors but also can save translation efforts. It is unnecessary to change the theme-rheme arrangements of the original unless it is required due to the social and cultural differences between English and Chinese.

Court Sight Translation From Text-Linguistic Approach

Court interpreting as a type of dialogue or liaison interpreting has recently drawn an increasing level of attention in a variety of disciplines, including legal science, applied linguistics, and translation studies. Amongst discussions relevant to court interpreting, the area of sight translation has yet to be emphasized, despite its importance to the outcome of a trial. In this study I first had observations of court interpreting activities on several occasions. Based on these observations, I then formulated a questionnaire and distributed it to 86 interpreters in two training workshops organized by the Taiwan High Court in 2013. The key findings are as follows： most interpreters consider sight translation to be more difficult than other forms of interpretation in the courtroom; while conducting sight translation many interpreters pause in order to seek clarification or are interrupted; most interpreters would prefer the judge or the prosecutor to orally summarize the text to be sight translated; and, after ＂negotiation,＂ most practitioners tend to lower the level of formality when dealing with a text written in a formal style. These findings imply that interpreters conducting sight translation render a translation through ＂negotiation＂ with other participants of the activity; this negotiation can be seen as an attempt to build a ＂context＂ from the perspective of liaison interpreting. This study intends to raise the awareness of court interpreters regarding a number of key issues in sight translation, and the results are hoped to be conducive to the future study of other types of liaison interpreting and interpreting as a whole.

Short-Term Memory Capacity across Time and Language Estimated from Ancient and Modern Literary Texts. Study-Case: New Testament Translations

We study the short-term memory capacity of ancient readers of the original New Testament written in Greek, of its translations to Latin and to modern languages. To model it, we consider the number of words between any two contiguous interpunctions Ip, because this parameter can model how the human mind memorizes “chunks” of information. Since IP can be calculated for any alphabetical text, we can perform experiments—otherwise impossible— with ancient readers by studying the literary works they used to read. The “experiments” compare the IP of texts of a language/translation to those of another language/translation by measuring the minimum average probability of finding joint readers (those who can read both texts because of similar short-term memory capacity) and by defining an “overlap index”. We also define the population of universal readers, people who can read any New Testament text in any language. Future work is vast, with many research tracks, because alphabetical literatures are very large and allow many experiments, such as comparing authors, translations or even texts written by artificial intelligence tools.

Translation Strategies of Instructional Text--Taking Murder Your Darlings and Other Gentle Writing Advice from Aristotle to Zinsser as an Example

With the popularity of English learning in the world,the demand for instructional materials is increasing,and how to accurately convey the information of these texts to English-learners and provide the learners with an effective learning experience has become a major problem.Therefore,the role of the translator is crucial.It is found that that translators should make linguistic choices based on the text functions and target readers’expectations,and flexibly adopt the translation strategies,such as addition,conversion,and cohesion to convey the intention of the source author and generate the source context accurately and appropriately.Applying relevant theories to the analysis of translation cases,the paper tentatively puts forward solutions to the problems encountered in the E-C translation of chapter one of Murder Your Darlings and Other Gentle Writing Advice from Aristotle to Zinsser.Hopefully,it could provide a reference for other translators working on instructional texts.

Translation Strategies of Vague Language in Political Texts

As one of the most important features of natural language, the ambiguity of the language has aroused widespread attention in the early Western scholars. Today, the growing number of experts, scholars have committed systematic exploration and research of vague language, and thus producing the fuzzy edge between discipline and linguistics —— Fuzzy Linguistics. Looking at the current fuzzy linguistics research, we can broadly divide it from the research point of view, into semantic ambiguity, pragmatic vagueness, syntactic blur, discourse vague and other directions. Undoubtedly, these types of studies approach from different angles can inevitably produces a cross, which is based on the analysis of the vague language to explore pragmatic functions as this paper.
