Kinetics of the direct reaction between ozone and phenol by high-gravity intensified heterogeneous catalytic ozonation

In this study,high-gravity intensified heterogeneous catalytic ozonation is utilized for treatment of phenol-containing wastewater,and the kinetics of the direct reaction between ozone and phenol in the presence of excess tertiary butanol(TBA)is investigated.It is revealed that the direct reaction between ozone and phenol in the rotating packed bed(RPB)follows the pseudo-first-order kinetics with a reaction rate constant higher than that in the conventional bubbling reactor(BR).Under different conditions of temperature,initial pH,high-gravity factor,and gaseous ozone concentration,the apparent reaction rate constant varies in the range of 0.0160–0.115 min-1.An empirical power-exponential model is established to characterize the effects of these parameters on the direct reaction between ozone and phenol by high-gravity intensified heterogeneous catalytic ozonation.

Control of In Vitro Regeneration of Individual Reproductive and Vegetative Organs in Dracaena fragrans cv. massangeana Hort. Regularities of the Direct Regenerationof Individual Organs In Vitro

Various individual organs (tepal, flower bud, inflorescence branch, inflorescence, adult vegetative bud and juvenile vegetative bud) were directly regenerated respectively by callus in Dracaena fragrans cv. massangeana Hort. During the regeneration of these individual organs some regularity phenomena were observed. Firstly, the kind range of the individual organs, which are directly regenerated in vitro, is in close relationship to the differentiated stages of the organs used for explant excision during plant ontogeny. The explants excised from the epigeous organ that is differentiated at some stage (stage A) during plant ontogeny must be able to separately regenerate all of those individual epigeous organs: ones differentiated slightly later than the stage A, ones differentiated at the stage A and all ones differentiated earlier than the stage A. Secondly, within this range which kind of organ is regenerated depends on the exogenous auxin concentrations in medium. With the gradual increase of 2,4-D concentration from 0.005 mg/L to 0.5 mg/L, the kinds of regenerated organs will change by the order as follows: vegetative bud, inflorescence, inflorescence branch, flower bud, tepal. These regularities will be able to be used for inducing the direct regeneration of a given epigeous organ in angiosperms.

Horizontal-Longitudinal Spatial Correlation of Acoustic Field with Deep Receiver in the Direct Zone in Deep Water

The horizontal-longitudinal correlation of acoustic field for the receiver near the bottom is analyzed by using nu- merical modeling. An approximate analytical solution of horizontal-longitudinal correlation coefficient is derived based on the ray method. Combining the characteristic of Lloyd＇s mirror interference pattern, the variability of acoustic field and its effect on horizontal-longitudinal spatial correlation are discussed. The theoretical pre- diction agrees well with the numerical results. Experimental results confirm the validity of analytical solution. Finally, the applicability of the analytical solution is summarized. The conclusion is beneficial for the design of bottom-moored array and the estimation of integral time for moving source localization.

Investigation of the direct microsurgery of ICCA aneurysms via the carotid artery-cavernous sinus space approach

Objective To discuss the approach and technique of the direct microsurgery of intracavemous sinus carotid artery aneurysms (ICCAAns). Methods All the 15 cases of ICCAAns underwent the direct microsurgery via the carotid artery-cavernous sinus space approach. Results Immediate carotid arteriography after the surgery showed that the aneurysms disappeared and the carotid artery could be showed clearly and normall. In a follow up period ranged frcm 1 months to 9 years,it was showed that,among 5 cases with 333,IV,V a,VI nerve paralysis before the surgery, three completely recovered,one recovered incompletely. All patients regained the capability of undertaking mormal cativities. None experienced rebleeding or neuroparalysis. Conclusion Direct microsurgery via this is approach is an ideal treatment of ICCAAns. 6 refs.

The signals to trigger the initiation of ovule enlargement are from the pollen tubes: The direct evidence

In angiosperms, initiation of ovule enlargement represents the start of seed development, the molecular mechanism of which is not yet elucidated. It was previously reported that pollen tube contents, rather than double fertilization, can trigger ovule enlargement. However, it remains unclear whether the signal（s） to trigger the initiation of ovule enlargement are from the sperm cells or fromthe pollen tubes. Recently, we identified a mutant dropl- drop2-, which produces pollen tubes with no sperm cells. Taking advantage of this special genetic material, we conducted pollination assays, and found that the ovules pollinated with dropl- drop2- pollen could initiate the enlargement and exhibited significant enlarged sizes at 36h after pollination in comparison with those unpollinated ovules. However, the sizes of the ovules pollinated with drops- drop2- pollen are significantly smaller than those of the ovules pollinated with wildtype pollen. These results demonstrate that the pollen tube, rather than the sperm cells, release the signal to trigger the initiation of ovule enlargement, and that double fertilization is required for further enlargement of the seeds.

Application of the direct blast adaptive suppression method to the forward scattered broadband signals

The basic principles of target detection by forward acoustic scattering are presented.A direct blast suppression approach based on adaptive filtering(DBS-AF) is proposed to suppress the direct blast.The DBS-AF technique is extended to the linear frequency modulation(LFM) signal,where the envelope of the signal is regarded as a 'general waveform' and imported into the adaptive filter.Application of the DBS-AF method to the data collected from a lake trial yields an output detection curve,in which the direct blast is mapped to the background while the acoustic field aberration is represented by the peak value fluctuation.The inhibitory effect in single hydrophone is approximately- 5 dB,and is then enhanced by exploiting the mean value removal approach as a preprocessing technique.The direct blast is further suppressed to a level of-10 dB by making full use of multichannel receptions.The main factors affecting the algorithm performance are as follows:the fluctuation degree of the receptions during the weighting vector training period and the power ratio of the forward scattered wave to the direct blast when the target is present.

The Weak Magnetic Photon Emission from Quark-gluon Plasma

There must be electromagnetic fields created during high-energy heavy-ion collisions.Although the electromagnetic field may become weak with the evolution of the quark-gluon plasma(QGP),compared to the energy scales of the strong interaction,they are potentially important to some electromagnetic probes.In this work,we propose the coupled effect of the weak magnetic field and the longitudinal dynamics of the background medium for the first time.We demonstrate that the induced photon spectrum can be highly azimuthally anisotropic when the quarkgluon plasma is in the presence of a weak external magnetic field.On the other hand,the weak magnetic photon emission from quark-gluon plasma only leads to a small correction to the photon production rate.After hydrodynamic evolution with a tilted fireball configuration,the experimentally measured direct photon elliptic flow is well reproduced.Meanwhile,the used time-averaged magnetic field in the hydrodynamic stage is found no larger than a few percent of the pion mass square.

Assessment of Policies to Promote People＇s Environmental Activities

Nowadays, many kinds of environmentally friendly campaigns led by local governments and private companies alike have been conducted in order to increase the pro-environmental behaviors. Unfortunately, these campaigns do not always lead to the upgrading of people＇s pro-environmental behaviors, because people＇s behaviors are usually based on various motivations, including economic efficiency, convenience and so on. This article mainly aimed at analyzing the implementing reasons of people＇s pro-environmental behaviors and finding out policies of promoting people＇s pro-environmental behaviors. Therefore, the author conducted the internet investigations among male and female respondents over 20 years old, and collected valid responses of more than 1,000 from 2008 till 2014 every year in Japan and also used three communication concepts, which are the direct communication, the indirect communication and the direct and indirect combined communication as a framework for discussing policies of promoting people＇s pro-environmental behaviors. As a result of the internet investigations, it was found that non-environmental factors, such as ＂saving the household＂, ＂compliance with social norms＂ and ＂health＂ were bigger than the environmental factors, such as ＂the prevention of the global warming＂ and ＂saving resources＂ with regard to the implementing reasons of the pro-environmental activities. Actually, the pro-environmental activities often have the non-environmental benefits, such as cost-saving, health and so on. And so, the author suggests that it is effective that upgrading the implementation rate of the pro-environmental activities do not only appeal to the effects of reducing the environmental loading that the activity has （the direct communication）, but also to the non-environmental benefits that the activity has, especially it is true to unconcerned people about environmental issues （the indirect communication）. In addition, the author emphases that people need to appeal to both the environmental effects and the non-environmental benefits which the activity has, respectively, especially to people with the concern about environmental issues to some extent （the direct and indirect combined communication）.

A Direct Method of Moving Planes to Fractional Power Sub Laplace Equations on the Heisenberg Group

We give the direct method of moving planes for solutions to the conformally invariant fractional power sub Laplace equation on the Heisenberg group.The method is based on four maximum principles derived here.Then symmetry and nonexistence of positive cylindrical solutions are proved.

THE FACILITATING EFFECT OF TRANSLATION ON EFL (ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE)WRITINGⅡ:WRITERS' ATTENTION PATTERNS

This study is undertaken to find out writers' attention patterns in these two different writing methods (the direct method and the translation-based method) during the writing process through the think-aloud method and EFL learners' perception of the advantages and disadvantages of those two writing methods.The results show that the subjects' attention patterns in the direct method and in the translation-based method are quite different and the differences are mainly embodied in the linguistic level attention and personal comment.As far as the subjects are concerned,writing directly in English is easier and faster than writing through translation,and the direct writing method often helps them learn English language and forces them to focus on English expression.In contrast,for the translation-based writing method,the subjects as a whole relate that they have a wide range of vocabulary and expressions,have a greater number of ideas,and can think through ideas clearly.

THE FACILITATING EFFECT OF TRANSLATION ON EFL (ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE) WRITING

This study attempts to explore the relationship between translation and English as a foreign language writing proficiency and the writing time's effect on this relationship through detailed analysis of a case study of sixteen English majors who are required to write four English compositions, each time each group adopting one of the two different writing methods: the direct method and the translation-based method. The first two writing tasks have a time limit of 45 minutes while the latter two do not. The results show that the translation-based method has advantages over the direct writing method with regard to the quality of the compositions. Based on this finding, the author claims that the translation-based method is an effective way to train and enhance EFL learners' English writing ability.
