Poetry,as a crucial form of literary expression,often employs metaphor as a common rhetorical device.According to the perspective of cognitive metaphor theory,metaphor transcends its traditional linguistic boundaries and is recognized as a profound cognitive mechanism,manifesting as a broader cognitive phenomenon.This article is based on metaphorical examples of“flowers”in Chinese and English poetry,carefully selecting representative cases for in-depth analysis.The aim is to compare the imagery of“flowers”in Chinese and English poetry,observe their similarities and differences,thereby fostering a better understanding of poetry in both languages.Through this study,we not only delve into the intricacies of metaphor within poetry but also shed light on the distinct interpretations of the symbol of“flowers”in different cultural contexts,expanding our appreciation for the cultural diversity inherent in poetry.

On the Translatability of Poetry

This paper discusses some reasons for the translatability of poetry since throughout the history of translation many theorists and scholars advocate that poetry is translatable.The“common core”shared by people speaking different languages,the theoretical basis to define translation correctly,and historical facts of poetry translation all lend support to the point that translation of poetry is possible.

Mastering Metaphors: A Possible Path to Understand Modern Poetry

Understanding modern poetry is a big problem for average readers because of all kinds of rhetorical devices filled with them,especially metaphors,which are hard for the readers to understand clearly.Thus,grasping metaphors would provide a possible solution to enhance the understanding of modern poetry.Based on the motivation to better understand modern poetry,the paper explores the 11 mechanisms of metaphors in modern poetry with examples in detail,i.e.,blending,mapping,frame shifting,image schema,conceptual integration,contextual grounding,inter-subjectivity,embodied cognition,recursiveness,juxtaposition,shape-moulding,by borrowing some concepts from Cognitive Linguistics,literary studies,and Rhetorics,which can be adopted as means and methods to understand modern poems.

现代歌词与新诗的不同起源——对新诗“学堂乐歌起源论”的反思

学堂乐歌是中国现代歌词的起源,但不应作为中国新诗的起源。白话歌词、白话诗、白话新诗虽然都使用白话,但“白话”的语境、内涵不同;学堂乐歌采用白话歌词,不一定是因为西洋曲调的引入。诗、乐分离带来现代歌词与新诗的门类和功能差异,不可混为一谈;学堂乐歌的教育性,很大程度上导致了学堂乐歌歌词的非诗性。对晚清诗界革命的传承,唱、读分化开启了现代歌词与新诗的两条道路。歌词的阅读与诗的阅读不能相提并论。中国现代诗乐的分离,是从学堂乐歌与五四新诗的分化开始的。

孔子前后的《诗》

先后结集于《诗》的《风》《雅》《颂》诸类乐歌——尽管其产生之先后与入《诗》之早晚约略相反——一直是宗周礼乐教化的资藉之一。即使在西周,与礼、乐互摄的“诗”已在作“德”的倡率,只是此时的“德”还较大程度地牵着申示德泽以“祈天永命”的功利的根蔓。肇端于孔子,礼、乐由“依于仁”而为儒家“仁也者,人也;合而言之,道也”的“道”所导引,《诗》被赋予了“修身以道,修道以仁”意义上的教化功能;这部典籍以其在一种全新的诠释中承载儒门所谓常道而被称为“六经”之一的《诗经》。孔子身后,孔门未必尽如韩非所说“儒分为八”。无论孟子与荀子间有怎样的分野,他们却都绍承了孔子,而将《诗》《书》《礼》《乐》《易》《春秋》诸典用于“为政以德”而“导之以德”以劝诫君宰、化导世风人心。诚然,依汉初既有的“四家诗”看,儒家《诗》教之传衍似乎约略可分四系,但可以肯定地说,这多方的传敷在义理大端处无不以孔子所谓“志于道,据于德,依于仁,游于艺”为归着。因此,对孔子之后孔门《诗》教的传衍或不必拘泥于对四家诗之师承作还原式的追溯,而只须借助传世文献与考古发掘之简策尽可能切近地探求这段《诗》学史或《诗》教史之神致。
