Many factors can contribute positively to contemporary students' engagement with their academic experience while they are not in the classroom environment. The purpose of this paper is to report and discuss the results of a mixed methods study that explored strategies used by face-to-face instructors to encourage students' engagement in their academic studies while they were outside the classroom, as well as students' reactions to these strategies. The research site was a mid-size state university in New York State. Data were collected through semester- long observations of six different classes, interviews with instructors about students' engagement,and a student survey about students' interactions with instructors.展开更多
