Aging-related changes are typically accompanied by decline in cognitive function, urinary control, sensory-motor function, and gait ability (Bradley et al., 1991; Bowen and Atwood, 2004; Hedden and Gabrieli, 2004; Grady, 2012; Moran et al., 2012). In addition, a number of studies have suggested changes in brain structure with normal aging, such as decrease in cortical thickness or increase in ventricular width (Blatter et al., 1995; Tang et al., 1997; Uylings and de Brabander, 2002; Preul et al., 2006; Apostolova et al., 2012). In particular, ventricular enlargement has been suggested as a structural biomarker for normal aging and progression of some illnesses, such as Alzheimer's disease (Blatter et al., 1995; Tang et al.,展开更多

As in previous years, the reports are full of accusations of the human rights situation in more than 190 countries and regions including China, but mentioned nothing of the widespread human rights abuses on its own territory. The Human Rights Record of the United States in 2008 is prepared to help people around the world understand the real situation of human rights in the United States, and as a reminder for the United States to reflect upon its own issues.展开更多

This model is of practical use: it can predict transient temperature responses and body temperature distribution for a person in a nonuniform hot environment, doing various jobs and dressed in different clothes. In addition, the results calculated from the model can be used to optimize the distribution of the tube-net lined on the WCV and to evaluate an individual thermal conditioning system with cooling water. The results obtained from the model agree well with the author's experimental data.展开更多

The oncogene was cloned and identified as a single nucleotide substitution of thymine for guanine in the 12th codon through the sequencing of its first axon. We compared the differences of expression and regulation between the transformed Ha-ras cells and untransformed parent cells. Data indicated that the expression of Ha-ras in the transformed cells was five-fold higher than in the untransformed cells and that the Ha-ras gene in the former was hypersensitive toward DNase I. In addition, a nuclear protein of 35 kilodaltons bound strongly to the 2.5 Kb fragment located upstream of the 6.6 Kb Ha-ras gene and contained a CC rich region. These results suggest that there might be another mechanism of activation for the ras gene besides point mutation.展开更多

Focusing on Bakhtin's late essays: "The Problem of the Text in Linguistics, Philology, and the Human Sciences; From Notes Made in 1970-71;" and "Toward a Methodology for the Human Sciences," the author deals with such concepts as sense, semantic whole, superaddressee, the third, and outsideness. Metalinguistics is interpreted as a philosophical approach to the problems of humanities methodology. The specifics of the human sciences, which Bakhtin put to the question, are described in comparison and correlation with the natural sciences. The author elaborates the idea of the communicative three-part relationship or trilogue (as a development of the dialogue). The role of the superaddressee as the third participant of the trilogue between the researcher (the subject) and the text (the object) is discussed. The notion semantic whole and its implementation in the process of the sense's becoming (development) are analyzed.展开更多

In this latter sense, the human face is at the center of Emmanuel Levinas' theory of ethics: We encounter each other face-to-face, he argues, and it is the other's face that calls for my ethical response to the holiness of his/her wholeness and essence. The primary ethical imperative is: "Thou shalt not kill." When we encounter a facially disfigured person, we usually fail to respond ethically because we concentrate on the disfigurement. The second dimension, as a result of the disfigurement, is often impaired and thus incapable of communicating in such a way that we can "read" the face. With our gaze fixed on the disfigured part of the face, we lose sight of the person as a whole. Metaphorically speaking, we could even say that we "kill" the person. Levinas conceives of the other's face not in its plastic manifestation. But the encounter with the other does at first take place as embodiment. According to Merleau-Ponty, this encounter is by definition interactive and dialogical. In Willa Cather's short story "The Profile," young beautiful Virginia marries a portrait painter after he has finished her portrait in profile. The left side of her face is severely disfigured because of a burn. Her husband is waiting impatiently for her to talk about "it" and the suffering it must cause her in order to "heal" her with his love, but she behaves as if it did not exist and even likes to dress extravagantly. In the following analysis of the short story, it will be illustrated how the husband fails to respond to his wife's face's invitation to interact with it and get in touch with the wholeness of her person that it stands for. Instead, he reduces her to the disfigurement. When he finally names the scar, he metaphorically "kills" her, as well as their marriage.展开更多
