In recent years, there has not been much progress in developing anxiolytic drugs.Amongst the barriers are the lack of clarity on the pathogenesis of anxiety disorders, low product conversion rates for developing drugs targeting the receptors, and species variability. Some scientists have focused on natural medicines, especially herbal medicines in traditional Chinese medicine.New drugs with excellent anxiolytic activity are hoped to be found in herbal medicines with anxiolytic effects. This mini-review summarised three Chinese herbal medicines with anxiolytic effects and anxiolytic herbal formulas used in the traditional Chinese medicine clinic.Several key issues that block the development of new anxiolytic drugs are also discussed. We hope to provide some ideas for researching and developing new anxiolytic drugs and studying anxiolytic components in traditional Chinese medicine. 展开更多

Computer-aided drug design (CADD) is an interdisciplinary subject, playing a pivotal role during new drug research and development, especially the discovery and optimization of lead compounds. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) modernization is the only way of TCM development and also an effective approach to the development of new drugs and the discovery of potential drug targets (PDTs). Discovery and validation of PTDs has become the “bottle-neck” restricted new drug research and development and is urgently solved. Innovative drug research is of great significance and bright prospects. This paper mainly discusses the “druggability” and specificity of PTDs, the “druglikeness” of drug candidates, the methods and technologies of the discovery and validation of PTDs and their application. It is very important to achieve the invention and innovation strategy “from gene to drug”. In virtue of modern high-new technology, especially CADD, combined with TCM theory, research and develop TCM and initiate an innovating way fitting our country progress. This paper mainly discusses CADD and their application to drug research, especially TCM modernization. 展开更多

By using mathematical reasoning, this paper demonstrates the treatment principle: “Virtual disease is to fill his mother but real disease is to rush down his son” and “Strong inhibition of the same time, support the weak” based on “Yin Yang Wu Xing” Theory in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). We defined two kinds of opposite relations and one kind of equivalence relation, introduced the concept of steady multilateral systems with two non-compatibility relations, and discussed its energy properties. Later based on the treatment of TCM and treated the healthy body as a steady multilateral system, it has been proved that the treatment principle is true. The kernel of this paper is the existence and reasoning of the non-compatibility relations in steady multilateral systems, and it accords with the oriental thinking model. 展开更多

Theory of both Zangxiang (藏象) and Jingluo (经络) is useful in understanding disease. By using mathematical reasoning based on Yin Yang Wu Xing Theory in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), this paper demonstrates the treatment principle: “Searching for a root cause of disease in cure, treatment of both the root-cause and symptoms at the same time” (治病求本, 标本兼治). It means that for a human body, there is the mathematical structure of both Zangxiang and Jingluo as her/his second physiological system. It can be used to determine both the root-cause and symptoms of the sick organ by using both Zangxiang and Jingluo. In general, for the human blood pH value, the normal range of theory is [7.34539, 7.45461] nearly to [7.35, 7.45], and the center is 7.4. The first or second transfer law of a human body’s energies changes according to the different blood pH values whether in the normal range or not. Human disease treatment should protect and maintain the balance of two incompatibility relations: the loving relationship and the killing relationship. As an application, acupuncture is used to treat limb-girdle muscular dystrophy. 展开更多

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is the fifth most common type of cancer and the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the world.HCC has a reported recurrence rate of 70%-80%after 5 years of follow-up.Controlling tumor recurrence is the most critical factor associated with HCC mortality.Conventional salvage therapies for recurrent HCC include re-hepatectomy or liver transplantation, transcatheter arterial chemoembolization,Y-90,target therapy, and immunotherapy;however, these conventional treatment modalities have yet to achieve consistently favorable outcomes.Meanwhile, previous studies have demonstrated that conventional therapies in combination with traditional Chinese medicine(TCM),acupuncture, moxibustion or dietary supplements could notably benefit patients with HCC recurrence by strengthening and augmenting the overall management strategy. However, systemic reviews related to the interactions between complementary therapies and conventional therapy in recurrent HCC are limited. In this review,we discuss the molecular mechanisms underlying the functions of complementary therapies for recurrent HCC,which include augmenting the local control to improve the congestion status of primary tumors and reducing multicentric tumor occurrence via inducing autophagy, apoptosis or cell cycle arrest.TCM and its derivatives may play important roles in helping to control HCC recurrence by inhibiting epithelial-mesenchymal transition, migration, invasion, and metastasis, inhibiting cancer stem cells, and ameliorating drug resistance. 展开更多

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in the treatment of Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) infection. METHODS: We electronically and manually searched electronic databases, references lists and conferences compilations, and included all randomized clinical trials comparing the treatment of H pylori using TCM with proton pump inhibitor or colloidal bismuth subcitratebased triple therapy as controls. The Jadad score was used to assess trial quality, H pylori eradication rate and the incidence of side effects were taken as outcome measurements, and heterogeneity analysis, meta-analysis and funnel plot analysis were conducted. RESULTS: Sixteen trials were included. The Jadad scores of all the trials were not more than 2. Clinical heterogeneity and substantial statistical heterogeneity existed among the trials (P = 0.001, I 2 = 59%) and meta-analysis was not conducted. The average eradication rates following TCM and triple therapy were 72% and 78% and the incidence of side effects were 2% and 29%, respectively. The funnel plot was obviously asymmetric. CONCLUSION: Available evidence is not convincing enough to show that TCM has the same efficacy as triple therapy in H pylori treatment. TCM may be safer than triple therapy. TCM should not be recommended as monotherapy in H pylori infection. 展开更多

At present, hypertension has the phenomenon of increasing incidence and advancing age of onset. It can be complicated by various cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and has a poor prognosis. Its pathogenesis is related to vascular endothelial injury and its mediated inflammation, blood flow, changes in mechanical force, and vascular remodeling.Vascular biomechanical changes are the early and critical pathogenic factors of this disease.Mechanosensitive ion channels and their proteins affect the pathological process of hypertension by improving cell membrane tension, regulating vascular tension and contractility, and participating in vascular biomechanical changes such as vascular remodeling. However, the drugs currently used to treat high blood pressure only slow the progression of the disease. Therefore,it is necessary to find and study effective medicines to treat hypertension. At present, modern medical methods do not have targeted treatment measures.Traditional Chinese medicine plays a significant role in treating this disease based on the principle of“treatment according to the syndrome”.Traditional Chinese medicine regulates the mechanical force of blood flow and maintains blood pressure balance in patients with hypertension. There are many kinds of Chinese patent medicines used to treat hypertension with good curative effects. 展开更多

AIM: To observe the regulatory effect of Chinese herbalmedicine on peritoneal lymphatic stomata and itssignificance in treating ascites in liver fibrosis model mice.METHODS: Two Chinese herbal composite prescriptionswere used separately to treat the carbon tetrachloride-induced mouse model of liver fibrosis. The histo-pathologicchanges of the liver sections (HE and VG stainings) wereobserved. The peritoneal lymphatic stomata was detected byscanning electron microscopy and computer imageprocessing. The changes of urinary volume and sodium ionconcentration were measured.RESULTS: In the model group, lots of fibrous tissue formedin liver and extended into the hepatic Iobulss to separatethem incompletely. In the treated and prevention groups, the histo-pathologic changes of liver was rather milder, onlyshowed much less fibrous tissue proliferation in the hepaticIobules. The peritoneal lymphatic stomata enlarged withincreased density in the experimental groups (diameter:PA, 3.07±0.69μm; PB, 2.82±0.37μm; TA, 3.25±0.82μmand TB, 2.82±0.56μm; density: PA, 7.11± 1.90 stomata@1000μm-2; PB, 8.76± 1.45 stomata@ 1000μm-2; TA, 6.55± 1.44 stomata@ 1000μm-2 and TB, 8.76 ± 1. 79 stomata@ 1000μm-2), as compared with the model group (diameter: 2.00 ±0.52μm; density: 4.45 ± 1. 05 stomata@ 1000 μm-2 ). Aftertreatment, the urinary volume and sodium ion excretionincreased in the experimental groupe ( PA, 231.28 ± 41. 09mmol@L-1; PB, 171.69± 27.48 mmol@L-1 and TA, 231.44±34.12 retool@ L-1 ), which were significantly different with thosein the model group (129.33 ± 36.75 rnmol@ L-1 ).CONCLUSION: Chinese herbal medicine has marked effectsin alleviating liver fibrosis, regulating peritoneal lymphaticstomata, improving the drainage of ascites from peritonealcavity and causing increase of urinary volume and sodiumion excretion to reduce the water and sodium retention, andthus have favorable therapeutic effect in treating ascites. 展开更多
