In 1962,the Russian linguist Romain Jakobson and the French anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss co-conducted a study on the poem The Cats(Les Chats)by Charles Baudelaire.Based on linguistic and ethnological refere...In 1962,the Russian linguist Romain Jakobson and the French anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss co-conducted a study on the poem The Cats(Les Chats)by Charles Baudelaire.Based on linguistic and ethnological references,their study focuses on a structural analysis of the famous Baudelairian sonnet at several levels such as phonological,phonetic,syntactic,prosodic,and semantic.Many critical papers were published as soon as this work appeared.Faced with the crowd of dispute and opposition,Jakobson and Lévi-Strauss wrote a series of journalistic or monographic articles to explain and defend themselves.Our study aims to be a systematic summary of the dispute,proposing to analyze the criticisms of Riffatere,Mounin,and Frandon,and giving a reading of Jakobson’s reply.In conclusion,we will try to relate this debate to the French New Criticism(la Nouvelle Critique)to understand its historical and theoretical importance.展开更多

It studies firstly the early translations and romantic lyrics of Pound, trying to demonstrate that part of the influence on his early poetics is from the Western traditional cultural inheritance and that the emphasis on musicality that Pound inherited from traditional forms of poetry turns out to be one of the major principles that Pound advocates in his early poetics; then it comes to the discussion of the new translation concepts and poetics in "The Seafarer" (1911), which is a great work Pound translated based on an Old English poem; next this paper will focus on the influence of Robert Browning's dramatic monologues and Yeats' Symbolism on Pound's transition from subjectivity to objectivity.展开更多

In order to clarify the essence of Pound's early poetics under the influence of Chinese classical poems, the paper starts from the discussion of the influence of Cathay (1915) and his translation of Cathay; then it provides a detailed analysis of the relationship between Chinese classical poems and Pound's creation; and finally it has given an analysis of "In a Station of the Metro". Pound absorbed different poetic concepts from all of them and transformed his poetry from the conventional Romanticism to the innovative Modemism. What Pound innovated in the poetry composition is of great importance if the new era wishes to shake off the banality and out-of-date tradition in literature. Pound changed a whole generation of poets and set a good example for those who desire to write in a new way展开更多

Focusing on literary tradition and innovation, this paper examines Lu Xun's poetics as represented in his early treatise On the Power of Mara Poetry (Moluo shi li shuo). As a leading writer and thinker deeply engag...Focusing on literary tradition and innovation, this paper examines Lu Xun's poetics as represented in his early treatise On the Power of Mara Poetry (Moluo shi li shuo). As a leading writer and thinker deeply engaged in the dramatic social and cultural transformations taking place in early twentieth- century China, Lu Xun was very concerned about how to build up the New Man and new society via new literature. Advocating Maratic poets who are full of the spirit of revolt and nonconformity, Lu Xun endeavored to disturb and reinvigorate Chinese minds by bringing in foreign dynamics and energies based upon modem individualism and humanism. At the same time, Lu Xun insisted that, while moving toward a bright future, people should constantly consider China's prosperous past. For Lu Xun, tradition was still of great relevance in creating and nurturing new poetry, new men, and a new society. To simply lump Lu Xun together with pure anti-traditionalists is problematic. Lu Xun is commonly seen as an iconoclastic pioneer in modem China; however, I argue that Lu Xun demonstrated a dialectical reflection on the relationship between tradition and modernity. Actually, Lu Xun envisioned a process by which, galvanized by imported Maratic spirit, selected cultural legacies would undergo modem reconfiguration and revitalization.展开更多
