The 12 animal calendars of the Chinese zodiac are the essence and source of Chinese civilization,and have been deeply rooted in the production,life,and social activities of various ethnic groups in China since ancient...The 12 animal calendars of the Chinese zodiac are the essence and source of Chinese civilization,and have been deeply rooted in the production,life,and social activities of various ethnic groups in China since ancient times.The ancient Luo Yue stone inscription1 is a popular ancient script from four to six thousand years ago,and 17,496 characters have been found,which is the earliest script found on the Chinese land so far.A comparative study of Chinese zodiac characters2 between the ancient Luo Yue stone inscriptions and the oracle bone through paleographic conformation reveals that the two characters have the same and similar characteristics.Therefore,this paper intends to further investigate the kinship between the two,and to conduct a preliminary exploration of the origin,development,and evolution of the zodiac by combining recent human archaeological data,emerging molecular anthropological data,historical literature,and data from the Chinese Civilization Exploration Project,in an attempt to show the integration and dependence of Chinese civilization,the pluralistic pattern of Chinese culture,and the Chinese nation for thousands of years.展开更多
The Dalang Weir(irrigation system) has benefited local people in the Chengdu Plain since its completion in the early Qing Dynasty.After extensive research of historical background details,and channeling scenes of the ...The Dalang Weir(irrigation system) has benefited local people in the Chengdu Plain since its completion in the early Qing Dynasty.After extensive research of historical background details,and channeling scenes of the Weir construction,and sifting through relevant literature in combination with chronicles,chorography,and tablet inscriptions from the Ming and Qing dynasties,assembled evidence indicates that the Weir was built during the autumn of the first reign to the spring of the second reign of Emperor Kangxi.The Weir is an important expansion of the famous Dujiangyan Irrigation System and after analyzing and assessing the value of the project under the principle of "making the past serve the present," it is also proof of a Buddhist Monk’s active participation in a public welfare undertaking.In addition to inheriting the basic logic of Shu’s water culture cultivated by Yu the Great,King Bieling of Shu,and Li Bing during their water control activities,it implies the spirit of joint efforts of officials and the populace to society and posterity.Monk Dalang,the initiator of the project,therefore,deserves great respect from later generations for his outstanding merits and virtues as well as his significant contribution to society.展开更多

We report on the properties of strong pulses from PSR B0656+14 by analyzing the data obtained using the Urumqi 25-m radio telescope at 1540 MHz from August 2007 to September 2010.In 44 h of observational data,a total...We report on the properties of strong pulses from PSR B0656+14 by analyzing the data obtained using the Urumqi 25-m radio telescope at 1540 MHz from August 2007 to September 2010.In 44 h of observational data,a total of 67 pulses with signal-to-noise ratios above a 5σthreshold were detected.The peak flux densities of these pulses are 58 to 194 times that of the average profile,and their pulse energies are 3 to 68 times that of the average pulse.These pulses are clustered around phases about 5-ahead of the peak of the average profile.Compared with the width of the average profile,they are relatively narrow,with the full widths at half-maximum ranging from 0.28 ° to 1.78 °.The distribution of pulse-energies follows a lognormal distribution.These sporadic strong pulses detected from PSR B0656+14 have different characteristics from both typical giant pulses and its regular pulses.展开更多
