Grounded in reader-centered theories,Reception Aesthetics prioritizes the active engagement and acceptance of target readers.This study examines the translation of children’s literature through the lens of Reception Aesthetics,using Li Wenjun’s rendition of The Secret Garden as a case study.The objective is to scrutinize various aspects of the translation-including vocabulary,syntax,rhetorical devices,and cultural nuances-and to discern how the adaptation and application of diverse translation strategies cater to the aesthetic expectations.

汉译本《译者的隐形:翻译史论》(The translator's invisibility:A history of translation)对韦努蒂翻译思想和理念的引进和推广起到了很大的作用。然而,其中部分译文存在着对原文词义、搭配、句法结构、跨文化知识背景的理解错误以及遣词造句等方面的问题,与原文的本义有较大出入,容易引起读者误解,值得商榷。本文列出其中几例存疑译文,条分缕析,指出其失误所在,并提出参考译文,以供对比。

On the Gender Difference of Translator's Subjectivity in Literary Translation

Translation is an activity aimed at transferring the source language to the target language,related to many aspects involving culture,society,history and so on.The translator plays a critical role in translation practice.Xu Jun considers"translator’s subjectivity should be reflected to be artistic personal consciousness in translated works."Translator’s differences in age,gender,personal traits,educational level and other aspects make translation artistry completely divergent.Therefore,translator’s subjectivity shoulders great significances on the success of literary translation,which isn’t arbitrary,out of control,must be conducted in line with essence of the original work.This paper focuses on the gender difference of translator’s subjectivity in literary translation,hoping to find a way of eliminating the influence of it in the translation work.

The deepening process of globalization has given rise to restless cultural exchanges among people from different regions of the world through newspapers,books,and other written media.However,the significant differences in languages and cultures have become an insurmountable gap in intercultural communication.To lubricate cultural exchanges,new translation theories that focus on the transformation of different cultural concepts shall be introduced and adopted.This paper aims to extract applicable notions from Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions for pragmatic translation studies by laying emphasis on its pragmatic value through case study.By such theoretical transplantation,valuable suggestions are proposed to tackle cultural misunderstandings and conflicts encountered amid cultural exchanges.

The English Subtitle Translation of Quanzhou’s World Heritage Application Documentary: A Frame Theory Perspective

Based on Fillmore’s frame theory, this paper examines the translator’s cognitive frame operation in the English subtitle translation of Quanzhou’s World Heritage application documentary. It analyzes and discusses how the translator maximizes translation effect between the source language and the target language, so as to enhance the readability of documentary subtitles and promote the spread of traditional Chinese culture. The findings are as follows: Firstly, in the translation process, the frame operations used by the translator include frame correspondence, intra-frame operations, frame replacement, frame perspective shift and frame transplantation. Secondly, cultural documentaries are full of culture-loaded words, for which the translator usually uses frame transplantation. Thirdly, due to the instantaneous nature of subtitles, intra-frame operations and frame replacement are applied in terms of cultural background of the target language audience. Besides, in order to enhance the audience’s reading experience, there may be some changes of narrative perspective in the English translation of cultural documentaries.

On Translator＇s Subjectivity in the Chinese Version of Pride and Prejudice Translated by Wang Keyi

As the center and subject of the translation, translator＇ s subjectivity plays a great role in translation research and more and more attention has been aroused. Since the first version of Pride and Prejudice came into being, Chinese translators have begun to show great interest in translating this novel, and there are more than ten translated Chinese versions now. Scholars have conducted a lot of research about this novel and its various translated versions. Among all these Chinese versions, Wang Keyi＇ s version is relatively earlier and is also the most popular one. Thus, it attracts many readers＇ eyes and there are increasing comments and studies on this version. There are also studies analyzing or comparing several versions from the perspective of translator＇ s subjectivity. While, few articles are published to analyze this version from the three elements of translator＇ s subjectivity： initiatives, passiveness, and purposiveness. They are also three basic features of translator＇ s subjectivity, in which translator＇ s subjectivity reflects. It is also the three features that consist of the translator＇ s subjectivity. Therefore, the comprehensive and intensive research of translator＇ s subjectivity in the Chinese version of Pride and Prejudice has great realistic meaning and practical values.

A Survey of English Translation Studies of Lu You’s Poetry Based on the Data Analysis of Domestic Academic Journals (2001-2022)

This article presents a comprehensive analysis of the current state of research on the English translation of Lu You’s poetry, utilizing a data sample comprising research papers published in the CNKI Full-text Database from 2001 to 2022. Employing rigorous longitudinal statistical methods, the study examines the progress achieved over the past two decades. Notably, domestic researchers have displayed considerable interest in the study of Lu You’s English translation works since 2001. The research on the English translation of Lu You’s poetry reveals a diverse range of perspectives, indicating a rich body of scholarship. However, several challenges persist, including insufficient research, limited translation coverage, and a noticeable focus on specific poems such as “Phoenix Hairpin” in the realm of English translation research. Consequently, there is ample room for improvement in the quality of research output on the English translation of Lu You’s poems, as well as its recognition within the academic community. Building on these findings, it is argued that future investigations pertaining to the English translation of Lu You’s poetry should transcend the boundaries of textual analysis and encompass broader theoretical perspectives and research methodologies. By undertaking this shift, scholars will develop a more profound comprehension of Lu You’s poetic works and make substantive contributions to the field of translation studies. Thus, this article aims to bridge the gap between past research endeavors and future possibilities, serving as a guide and inspiration for scholars to embark on a more nuanced and enriching exploration of Lu You’s poetry as well as other Chinese literature classics.

The Poison of Polygamy:Genre of the English Translation

When the Chinese-language The Poison of Polygamy was translated into English,some critics identified the work as picaresque.Skeptical of this conclusion,the author of this paper broadens the field of inquiry to suggest classification in an emigrant sensational genre.Briefly,the first two plots of the multi-strand work unfold the adventures of Chinese emigrants travelling by sea and land to Melbourne’s Gold Mountain.Interestingly,we are also afforded a glimpse of emigrant miners’cooperation regardless of race and colour when a mine disaster occurs.The work provides sharp recognition of migrants’dilemmas,such as marriage,before tackling the bigamy issue,the gender war,the fallen lifestyle of the female protagonist and so on.As the work unfolds,further shocking tales of murders and indulgence are revealed.Unlike the picareque’s episodic style,the translated Poison of Polygamy is coherent,realistic,serious and critical,and completely lacking in both sarcasm and playfulness.To investigate the appropriateness of assigning the work to the picaresque genre,the paper compares briefly with representative Spanish picaresque works such as Lazarillo and Gusman and English canonical Moll Flanders,watching carefully for commonalities.However,The Poison of Polygamy would seem to resonate more with Braddon’s Lady Audley’s Secret,a sensational fiction which shocked the English world in the 1860s.The contexts of both novels are close,mid-Victorian and Edwardian,where the latter is a continuation of the Victorians.The author is further enlightened by research results of literary translators who advocate that a text,once translated into a target language,becomes a canon of that culture and is cherished as such by its readers-as in the case of Shakespeare being revered as a German poet when read in translation.From this experiment the paper deems that cross-lingual comparative literature is not only possible but significant and resourceful.

Translators of the Sino-Russian crude oil pipeline: They are the translators who enabled communication between the Chinese staff and the Russian staff during the construction and operation of the SinoRussian crude oil pipeline, including during such crucial tasks like the launching and the reception of the pig traps and the process of transporting the oil. In the article Owen’s and Yang Guobin’s English versions of Wenxin Diaolong are compared from the perspective of a translator’s identity.Owen is a translator of A-merican origin while Yang Guobin is of Chinese origin.Their multiple identity as a reader,author,creator and cultural communicator differs much from each other,which produces important influences upon the selection of the strategy of translation.Owen prefers foreignizing translation while Yang favors domesticating translation.The English translation of Wenxin Diaolong provides much value for the research on the translation of Chinese classic literature.

Translator＇s Voice in Translated Texts

Ever since Venuti put forward the concept of translator＇s invisibility in 1995, studies have been conducted on the discursive presence of translators in the translated texts. The translator, as the receiver of the source text and m the meantime the producer of the target text, is sure to leave his/her voice traceable in the translated texts throughout the whole translating process. This paper aims to present an overview of the conceptual development of the translator＇s voice in translation studies from different perspectives like narratology, stylistics, socio-narrative theory, speech-act theory etc.

Changing Content of Translators＇ Prefaces： With Special Reference to China Yilin Press＇s Translated Publications

The current study aims at identifying the content configuration of translators＇ prefaces with special reference to China Yilin Press＇s English-Chinese （E-C） translated publications of American authors and finding the evolving tendency of the content of the translators＇ prefaces. One hundred and eight translators＇ prefaces are selected from the E-C translations published by the Press from 1988 to 2013 and classified on the basis of Genette＇s （1997） classification scheme. The Microsoft Excel as well as a human coder is used to analyze the evolving tendency and content of the translators＇ prefaces. Results indicate that translators＇ prefaces fall into 11 kinds in terms of their content, with the occurrence of three of them--genesis, the translator＇s conclusion and introduction to the translator ---on the increase, whereas that of eight of them--introduction to the author, introduction to the original, genre indication, the translator＇s opinion or analysis, statements of intent, contextual information, commentary on the title and introduction to the translated version--on the decline. It can be concluded that translators＇ prefaces play important roles in that they provide more information concerning the original and the author, such as plots, characters in the story and narrative techniques, but also give explanations for translators＇ motivation of translation, translation strategies adopted. Focus of the content of translators＇ prefaces has shifted from the original and the authors to the translators and translation process that reflect translator＇s subjectivity. This study underlines that due attention should be paid to the evolving tendency of their content configuration in recent years so as to ensure the social status of translators, and circulation and acceptance of the translated publications.
