Therefore, assessing this subjectivity in different stages of development and population fringes may be a determinant key factor to assist the implementation of successful disease prevention and health promotion strategies. Aim: The aim of the present study was to discern how Fine Arts’ college students of the Anatomy class mentally represent the inner morphology of the human body of the Young Person and of an Elderly Person. Method: For such, 126 students were asked to draw the interior of the body of a Young Person and of an Elderly Person. In all, 252 drawings were collected and analysed, based on a coding data grid designed for this purpose. Hence, a comparative analysis of these two different vital lifecycle phases was achieved. Results: The results suggest anatomical differences in the pictorial representation of the Young Person and of the Elderly Person, namely in the accentuation of the curvatures of the vertebral column, retrusion of the lower jaw and muscle flaccidity. Conclusions: Although the body schema was the same for all individuals, the body image was singularly depicted and linked to each individual’s history, representing a synthesis of his idiosyncratic perceptions, experiences and particularities.展开更多

I do believe that there comes a time when there is lack of a reversible interaction between the soul and the spirit in certain individuals which leads to a state of mental offset. For humans to live in sociality the world is governed by humans’ laws but the mentally offset human do not live according to these laws. Due to this, they are considered as being useless in the society but I do believe that they have complete natural human rights and are not useless for they are aware of each act they perform. It is observed that the mentally offset human hardly acquire a disease from natural origin, I do believe that due to this lack of a reversible interaction between the soul and the spirit, the immune system is reprogrammed such that there is a lack of recognition of exogenous and endogenous pathological substances and there is no means of interaction between these substances and the body cells.展开更多

Neurosciences and current developmental theories confirm the existence of defensive mechanisms related to body and affectivity that psychodynamic theories had already highlighted. Reading child’s behavior not only by administering tests but also through careful clinical observations allows a better understanding of the communication and social difficulties present in autistic children. The identification of the zone of proximal development can promote a therapeutic intervention that respects the individuality of the child and the specificity of his relational approach to the world. Conclusion: The paper presents the theoretical principles of a body-centered therapy to promote the attunement processes necessary to activate cognitive resources.展开更多

Subjective physical symptoms are more likely to appear more readily than mental symptoms. In this study, we revealed that the relationship between mental states and subjective physical fatigue or pain in seven body sites among 2449 teachers. The 12-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) was used to assess mental state. We defined a score of 4 points and over in the GHQ-12 score as unhealthy mental state. We also asked about the presence of subjective physical fatigue or pain in each seven body sites in the past one year. In the results, 30.3% unhealthy mental states were found in females and 22.9% in males. Most of subjective physical fatigue or pains were detected in neck and shoulder, eyes, head and low back. Using multivariate logistic regression, higher scores in the GHQ-12 were positively associated with presence of subjective fatigue or pain in head and eyes in both genders, in lower extremities among females, and in back, upper extremities among males. Our results suggest that physical symptoms in specific body sites with gender differences may be useful in the early identification of unhealthy mental states among teachers. We should have efforts to pay attention to mental states among high school teachers if their symptoms do not get better after taking physical care.展开更多

In this paper a new implicit surface method is proposed to reconstruct the human body surface from the points based on the combination of radial basis functions (RBFs) and adaptive partition of unity (PoU). The whole 3D domain of the scanned human body is firstly subdivided into a set of overlapping subdomalns based on the improved octrees. The smooth local surfaces are then computed in the subdomalns based on RBFs. And finally the global human body surface is reconstructed by blending the local surfaces with the adaptive PoU functions. This method is robust for the surface reconstruction of the scanned human body even with large or non-uniform point cloud which has a sharp density variation.展开更多

In Uganda, the prevalence is reported to be 710 per 100,000 population. Unlike normal adults who are less likely to have foreign body ingestion, patients with mental illnesses such as schizophrenia are at an increased risk of both intentional and accidental foreign body ingestion. Therefore, health workers must be vigilant while assessing such patients not to miss out on the diagnosis as unwitnessed foreign body ingestion presents a diagnostic challenge. Observation: We received a 33-year-old female diagnosed with schizophrenia four years before this admission as a referral. She presented at MNRH A&E with complaints of abdominal pain, non-bilious vomiting, and progressive weight loss. She had multiple admissions in private hospitals before her referral to MNRH where several investigations were done with inconclusive results. Upper GI endoscopy revealed multiple foreign bodies in the stomach. An erect abdominal x-ray was then done to rule out distal gastrointestinal involvement and/or perforation. An emergency laparotomy was performed and over 170 different metallic objects of varying sizes were completely evacuated. She reported that she ingested them in response to the compelling auditory hallucinations but had no intention of self-harm. Conclusion: Foreign body ingestion presents a diagnostic challenge in adults. The various impairments among mentally ill patients put them at an increased risk hence the need for suspicious diagnostic evaluation of those presenting with abdominal symptoms. Both health workers and families have a role to play in the prevention of such life-threatening emergencies.展开更多
