The prevalence of red-green color vision deficiency and its related factors in an elderly population above 60 years of age

AIM:To determine the prevalence of red-green(RG)color vision deficiency(CVD)in an elderly population and its related factors.METHODS:This report is a part of the Tehran Geriatric Eye Study:a cross-sectional population-based study that was conducted on the elderly population(≥60y)of Tehran,Iran using multi-stage stratified random cluster sampling.All study participants underwent complete ocular examination,including the measurement of uncorrected and bestcorrected visual acuity,objective and subjective refraction,and slit-lamp biomicroscopy.The color vision was tested using Ishihara plates with the near optical correction in place.RESULTS:Of the 3791 invitees,3310 participated in the study.The data of 2164 individuals were analyzed after applying the exclusion criteria.The prevalence of R-G CVD was 3.73%(95%CI:2.37%–5.09%)in the whole sample;the prevalence of protanomaly,protanopia,and deuteranopia was 1.51%,1.76%,and 0.45%,respectively.The prevalence of R-G CVD was significantly higher in males than in females.The prevalence of RG CVD increased with advancing age from 2.91%in the age group 60–64y to 5.8%in the age group≥80y(P=0.070).According to the multiple logistic regression model,male sex,and glaucoma were significantly related to RG CVD.Older age and hypertension also had a marginally significant relationship with RG CVD.CONCLUSION:Changes in color vision occur in the elderly due to the aging process and some physiological and pathological factors.Since the change in visual perception may affect the person’s performance,this aspect of the visual system’s function should also be taken into consideration in the examinations of the elderly. 展开更多

AIM:To investigate the prevalence of color vision deficiency(CVD)among college students and their quality of life(QoL)in a Chinese college.METHODS:This cross-sectional study was performed in Sichuan University in Chengdu,China.The questionnaire containing participants’demographic data,as well as CVD related QoL was distributed to students who were screened as CVD[by Color Vision Examination Plates(Version 6)]in 2022 freshman entrance examination.Color blindness QoL(CBQoL)and utility analysis were used to evaluate the QoL of CVD students.RESULTS:There were 381 of 17303(2.20%)students screened as CVD,including 368(4.11%)males and 13(0.16%)females.A total of 317 students completed the questionnaire,the response rate was 83.20%.Only 166 participants(52.3%)knew they have CVD before the physical examination for college entrance examination,while a total of 145 participants(45.74%)hoped to be diagnosed earlier.The medians of CBQoL score and utility were 5.85(range 2.2-6)and 1(range 0-1),respectively.The proportions of students whose QoL is affected by CVD were 67.63%(211/312)and 42.27%(134/317)measured by CBQoL and utility analysis respectively.CONCLUSION:The prevalence of CVD in males is much higher than that in females.The time when CVD students first became aware of their CVD is relatively late.The QoL of the study population is quite high,while a large proportion of students’QoL are affected by CVD.It is suggested that as a congenital defect,CVD screening in China should be earlier,and appropriate guidance and support are needed for CVD patients to help them better adapt to life,study,and work. 展开更多

Purpose : To investigate correlation of variation in the exon 5 of red and green pigment genes with color vision defects.Methods : Exon 5 of the red and green pigment genes in 11 protans, 19 deutans and 38 normal controls were analyzed by heteroduplux-SSCP analysis.Results : In all 11 protans and 8 of the 19 deutans, defects of the red or green pigment gene could be identified. The C polymorphism (A/C at codon 283) in green pigment gene was present in 8 of 44 trichromats and 5 of 24 dichromats. Specific electrophoretic bands were found in 2 normal controls and a deutan.Conclusions: Variation in the exon 5 of the red and green pigment genes is the most common cause for color vision defects. The autotetraploid Carassius auratus(4nRR,4n=200,RRRR)is derived from whole-genome duplication of Carassius auratus red var.(RCC,2n=100,RR).In the current study,we demonstrated that chromatophores and pigment changes directly caused the coloration and variation of 4nRR skin(red in RCC,brownish-yellow in4nRR).To further explore the molecular mechanisms underlying coloration formation and variation in 4nRR,we performed transcriptome profiling and molecular functional verification in RCC and 4nRR.Results revealed that scarb1,associated with carotenoid metabolism,underwent significant down-regulation in 4nRR.Efficient editing of this candidate pigment gene provided clear evidence of its significant role in RCC coloration.Subsequently,we identified four divergent scarb1 homeologs in 4nRR:two original scarb1 homeologs from RCC and two duplicated ones.Notably,three of these homeologs possessed two highly conserved alleles,exhibiting biased and allelespecific expression in the skin.Remarkably,after precise editing of both the original and duplicated scarb1homeologs and/or alleles,4nRR individuals,whether singly or multiply mutated,displayed a transition from brownishyellow skin to a cyan-gray phenotype.Concurrently,the proportional areas of the cyan-gray regions displayed a gene-dose correlation.These findings illustrate the subfunctionalization of duplicated scarb1,with all scarb1genes synergistically and equally contributing to the pigmentation of 4nRR.This is the first report concerning the functional differentiation of duplicated homeologs in an autopolyploidfish,substantiallyenrichingour understanding of coloration formation and change within this group of organisms. 展开更多

Cave-adapted animals provide a unique opportunity to study the evolutionary mechanisms underlying phenotypic,metabolic,behavioral,and genetic evolution in response to cave environments.The Mexican tetra(Astyanax mexicanus)is considered a unique model system as it shows both surface and cave-dwelling morphs.To date,at least 33 different cave populations have been identified,with phylogenetic studies suggesting an origin from at least two independent surface lineages,thereby providing a unique opportunity to study parallel evolution.In the present study,we carried out the most exhaustive phylogeographic study of A.mexicanus to date,including cave and surface localities,using two mitochondrial markers(cytochrome b(cyt b)and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I(COI))and nuclear rhodopsin visual pigment(rho).Additionally,we inferred the molecular evolution of rho within the two contrasting environments(cave and surface)and across three geographic regions(Sierra de El Abra,Sierra de Guatemala,and Micos).In total,267 individuals were sequenced for the two mitochondrial fragments and 268 individuals were sequenced for the rho visual pigment from 22 cave and 46 surface populations.Phylogeographic results based on the mitochondrial data supported the two-lineage hypothesis,except for the Pachón and Chica caves,whose introgression has been largely documented.The Sierra de El Abra region depicted the largest genetic diversity,followed by the Sierra de Guatemala region.Regarding the phylogeographic patterns of rho,we recovered exclusive haplogroups for the Sierra de El Abra(Haplogroup I)and Sierra de Guatemala regions(Haplogroup IV).Moreover,a 544 bp deletion in the rho gene was observed in the Escondido cave population from Sierra de Guatemala,reducing the protein from seven to three intramembrane domains.This change may produce a loss-of-function(LOF)but requires further investigation.Regarding nonsynonymous(dN)and synonymous(dS)substitution rates(omega valuesω),our results revealed the prevailing influence of purifying selection upon the rho pigment for both cave and surface populations(ω<1),but relaxation at the El Abra region.Notably,in contrast to the other two regions,we observed an increase in the number of dN mutations for Sierra de El Abra.However,given that a LOF was exclusively identified in the Sierra de Guatemala region,we cannot dismiss the possibility of a pleiotropic effect on the Rho protein. 展开更多

Objective:To explore the value of tongue color combined with sublingual microcirculation in predicting the severity of mild to moderate acute cerebral infarction(ACI).Methods:From January to December 2022,90 patients with ACI were admitted to the Department of Neurology of Jiangsu Provincial Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine.According to the NHISS score on the 5th day of admission,the patients were divided into mild group(35 cases)and moderate group(55 cases).The changes of tongue color and arterial lactate on the 5th day of admission were observed and monitored.Side-stream dark field imaging(SDF)was used to determine the total vascular density(TVD),perfused vascular density(PVD),perfused vascular ratio(PPV)and microvascular flow index(MFI).The multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to screen the risk factors for the severity of ACI,and the receiver operating characteristic curve(ROC)to evaluate their values in predicting ACI severity.Results:There was no significant difference in lactate between the two groups(P>0.05),and the frequency of red tongue in the mild group was higher,and the frequency of red tongue in the moderate group was significantly higher in the dark tongue group(P<0.05).The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that PVD and PPV were independent risk factors for the severity of mild to moderate ACI(P<0.05).The ROC curve analysis showed that an area under the curve of 0.832 was achieved by the combination of PVD and PPV,which was larger than that of a single factor.Conclusion:Tongue color combined with sublingual microcirculation can be combined to predict the severity of mild to moderate ACI. 展开更多

Purpose: To objectively evaluate the clinical application of color pattern reversal visual e-voked potential (CPR-VEP) on primary open angle glaucoma (POAG). Methods: CPR-VEP and FM 100-hue test were performed in 31 eyes with POAG and 33 normal eyes. Color pattern stimulation was presented by color monitor controlled by computer program. The reversal rate of the stimulating pattern was 2 Hz and the spatial frequency of the stimulating was 0.53 cycle/degree. The color stimulating pattern include White /Black , Red/Black , Green/Black , Blue/Black , Yellow /Black , Red/Green and Blue /Yellow . Results : CPR-VEP P1 latencies were obviously prolonged in POAG group in comparison with normal control group in equiluminance. All CPR-VEP P1 amplitudes, except Blue/Black P1 amplitude, show no differences between POAG group and normal control group . Conclusion: P1 latencies of all CPR-VEP and P1 amplitude of Blue/Black CPR-VEP were parameters for identifing acquired dyschromatopsia caused by POAG. The results 展开更多

An automatic intelligent system for the colour and texture inspection of bakery products is proposed.In this system,advance classification technique featuring Support Vector Machine and biologically inspired HMAX based shape descriptor integrated with biologically plausible RGB Opponent-Colour-Channel Descriptor is used to classify bakery products to their respective classes based on the shape and based on their colour referring to different baking durations. The results of this paper are compared with other methods for the automatic bakery products inspection. It is discovered that biologically inspired computer vision models performs accurately and efficiently as compared to the computer vision models which are not biologically plausible,in the bakery products quality inspection. It is also discovered that the One Versus One SVM and Directed Acyclic Graph SVM acquired the maximum accurate classification rate. The proposed method acquired classification accuracy of 95% and 100% for the biscuit shape and biscuit colour recognition,respectively. The proposed method is also consistently stable and invariant. This shows that the biologically inspired computer vision models have the capability to replace existing inspection methods as more reliable and accurate alternative. 展开更多

AIM:To determine the association between distance and near visual acuity(VA)and cognitive function among older adults in Selangor,Malaysia.METHODS:A total of 230 older adults(age≥60y)participated in this study.Habitual distance and near VA were measured using the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study Chart and Lighthouse Near Visual Acuity Chart,respectively.Global cognitive function was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination(M-MSE)and the Malay language version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment(M-MoCA).Digit Symbol(DS)subtest was used to measure information processing.RESULTS:No significant association was observed between vision and M-MSE and M-MoCA scores.However,poor distance and near VA were found to be significantly associated with low DS scores[distance VA:β=-0.01,R2=0.1,P=0.02;odds ratio(OR)=2.84,95%confidence interval(CI),1.10-7.33,P=0.03;near VA:β=-0.05,R2=0.08,P=0.00;OR=3.32,95%CI,1.28-8.59,P=0.01].CONCLUSION:Poor vision is associated with a decline in information processing in older adults and substantiates the importance of preserving good vision in maintaining cognitive function. 展开更多

Aiming at the dynamics and uncertainties of natural colors affected by the natural environment,a color P-law generation model based on the natural environment is proposed to develop algorithms and to provide a theoretical basis for plant dynamic color simulation and color sensor data transmission.Based on the HSL(Hue,Saturation,Lightness)color solid,the proposed method uses the function P-set to provide a color P-law generation model and an algorithm of the Dynamic Colors System(DCS),establishing the DCS modeling theory of the natural environment and the color P-reasoning simulation based on the HSL color solid.The experimental results show that based on the color P-law,for the DCS of the natural environment,when the external factors change,the color of the plant changes,accordingly,verifying the effectiveness of the color P-law generation model and the algorithm of the DCS.In the dynamic color intel-ligent simulation system,when external factors change,the dynamic change of plant color generally conforms to the basic laws of the natural environment.This enables the effective extraction of color data from the Internet of Things(IoT)-based color sensors and provides an effective way to significantly reduce the data transmission bandwidth of the IoT network. 展开更多

The inter-class face classification problem is more reasonable than the intra-class classification problem.To address this issue,we have carried out empirical research on classifying Indian people to their geographical regions.This work aimed to construct a computational classification model for classifying Indian regional face images acquired from south and east regions of India,referring to human vision.We have created an Automated Human Intelligence System(AHIS)to evaluate human visual capabilities.Analysis of AHIS response showed that face shape is a discriminative feature among the other facial features.We have developed a modified convolutional neural network to characterize the human vision response to improve face classification accuracy.The proposed model achieved mean F1 and Matthew Correlation Coefficient(MCC)of 0.92 and 0.84,respectively,on the validation set,outperforming the traditional Convolutional Neural Network(CNN).The CNN-Contoured Face(CNN-FC)model is developed to train contoured face images to investigate the influence of face shape.Finally,to cross-validate the accuracy of these models,the traditional CNN model is trained on the same dataset.With an accuracy of 92.98%,the Modified-CNN(M-CNN)model has demonstrated that the proposed method could facilitate the tangible impact in intra-classification problems.A novel Indian regional face dataset is created for supporting this supervised classification work,and it will be available to the research community. 展开更多

Objective:Rapid discrimination of three classes of safflowers,dyed safflower,adulterated safflower,and pure safflower using computer vision and image processing algorithms.Methods:A low cost computer vision system(CVS)was designed to measure the color of safflowers in the RGB(red,green,blue),L^*a^*b^*,and HSV(hue,saturation,vale)color spaces.The color moments in these three color spaces were extracted from the acquired images as color features of safflower.In addition,five kinds of pigments that are commonly used to dye safflowers were identified by high-performance liquid chromatography as a reference.Pattern recognition methods were investigated for rapid discrimination,including an unsupervised principal component analysis(PCA)algorithm and a supervised partial least squares discriminant analysis(PLS-DA)algorithm.Results:The mean error(e)between color values measured with the colorimeter and calculated with the CVS was 2.4%,with a high correlation coefficient(r)of 0.9905.This result indicated that the established CVS was reliable for color estimation of safflowers.The PLS-DA model,which had a total accuracy of 91.89%,outperformed the PCA model in classifying pure,adulterated,and dyed safflowers.Conclusion:The color objectification is a promising tool for rapid identification of dyed and adulterated safflowers. 展开更多

Computer-aided diagnosis based on image color rendering promotes medical image analysis and doctor-patient communication by highlighting important information of medical diagnosis.To overcome the limitations of the color rendering method based on deep learning,such as poor model stability,poor rendering quality,fuzzy boundaries and crossed color boundaries,we propose a novel hinge-cross-entropy generative adversarial network(HCEGAN).The self-attention mechanism was added and improved to focus on the important information of the image.And the hinge-cross-entropy loss function was used to stabilize the training process of GAN models.In this study,we implement the HCEGAN model for image color rendering based on DIV2K and COCO datasets,and evaluate the results using SSIM and PSNR.The experimental results show that the proposed HCEGAN automatically re-renders images,significantly improves the quality of color rendering and greatly improves the stability of prior GAN models. 展开更多

AIM: To evaluate the effects of chronic smoking on color vision in young subjects.METHODS: This study included 91 smokers and 88non-smokers(a total of 179 volunteers) without any ophthalmologic and systemical disorders. The subjects were between 18-40 years of age with a best corrected visual acuity(BCVA) of 20/20, normal anterior and posterior segment examinations and normal intraocular pressure. The color vision of the subjects were evaluated with Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue test(FMHT). The total error scores and axis calculation were performed for each subject and the results correlated.RESULTS: Mean age and the standard deviation was28±5y in the smokers group, and 26.7±5.5y in the control group(P =0.101). Sex distribution was similar in the two groups(P =0.365). There was no significant correlation between age and FMHT total error scores(P =0.069).Median of FMHT total error scores of smokers and non-smokers were 65 and 50.50, respectively. FMHT total error scores was found significantly higher in smokers than non-smokers(P =0.004). There was no statisticaly significant difference between smoker and non-smoker groups with respect to axis ratio calculation(P =0.611).There was no significant correlation with FMHT total error scores with neither smoking duration nor number of cigarettes smoked per day(P =0.405, P =0.454,respectively).· CONCLUSION: This study suggested that chronic smoking affects the color vision of young smokers but this may not be sector selective. 展开更多

A nonlinear color estimation method for single-band thermal infrared imagery based on kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) and sparse representation was proposed. Nonlinear features of infrared image were extracted using KPCA. The relationship between image features and chromatic values was learned using sparse representation and a color estimation model was obtained. The thermal infrared images can be rendered automatically using the color estimation model. The experimental results show that the proposed method can render infrared image with an accurate color appearance. The proposed idea can also be used in other color estimation problem. 展开更多

The purpose of this work is to evaluate the epidemiological aspects of vision problems and their repercussions in the schooling of children in Libreville and Owendo. Methodology: This transversal and descriptive study was carried out in May and June 2011. Included in the study were children in the 7th and 8th grades of the primary schools in Libreville and Owendo. For each child, an eye exam, including the subjective measure of visual acuity, was carried out using the Monoyer scale, and the color vision assessment was carried out with the Ishihara test. Any visual capacity under or equal to 7/10th in at least one eye was considered to be pathological. We gathered information about demographic characteristics, any preceding vision issues on the record, data on other medical problems on the record and the eye examination on computer cards. Results: Nine hundred and sixty-three children (416 boys and 517 girls, with a gender ratio of 0.86) were examined. The average age was 12 ± 1.7 years old. The prevalence of the drop in visual acuity was 16.2%. The prevalence of color vision anomalies was 15.5%. Complaints concerning vision problems were significantly more present from children with a drop in visual acuity (p 0.01). Visual anomalies had an impact on the children’s schoolwork, and yet, visits to the ophthalmologist’s office were few. Conclusion: The frequency of anomalies in vision justifies systematic screening in schools and organization of an appropriate treatment. 展开更多
