A Thematic Analysis of the Novel Open Secrets from Psychoanalysis Perspective

Alice Munro,the first short story writer in Canada to receive the Nobel Prize laureate in 2013,applies the unconscious to the portrayal of characters and the construction of engrossing stories.Based on the unconscious theory of Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis,this article focuses on one of Alice Munro’s short stories,Open Secrets,by analyzing the unconscious of representative characters,to explore their power conversion through the conflicts triggered by their unconscious mind.Via uncovering their unique personalities and values,as well as displaying their power against each other through conflict,this article reveals that the relationship between characters is sophisticated and changeable,and their power against each other has been a state of change in continuous conflicts.Behind the unconscious displays a thoroughly different comparison of forces:the strong who behaves violently and arrogantly actually shows weakness;in turn,the obedience and endurance of the weak strongly manifest a tenacious resistance.

The need to develop tailored tools for improving the quality of thematic bibliometric analyses: Evidence from papers published in Sustainability and Scientometrics

Purpose: The aim of this article is to explore up to seven parameters related to the methodological quality and reproducibility of thematic bibliometric research published in the two most productive journals in bibliometrics, Sustainability(a journal outside the discipline) and Scientometrics, the flagship journal in the field.Design/methodology/approach: The study identifies the need for developing tailored tools for improving the quality of thematic bibliometric analyses, and presents a framework that can guide the development of such tools. A total of 508 papers are analysed, 77% of Sustainability, and 23% published in Scientometrics, for the 2019-2021 period.Findings: An average of 2.6 shortcomings per paper was found for the whole sample, with an almost identical number of flaws in both journals. Sustainability has more flaws than Scientometrics in four of the seven parameters studied, while Scientometrics has more shortcomings in the remaining three variables.Research limitations: The first limitation of this work is that it is a study of two scientific journals, so the results cannot be directly extrapolated to the set of thematic bibliometric analyses published in journals from all fields.Practical implications: We propose the adoption of protocols, guidelines, and other similar tools, adapted to bibliometric practice, which could increase the thoroughness, transparency, and reproducibility of this type of research.Originality/value: These results show considerable room for improvement in terms of the adequate use and breakdown of methodological procedures in thematic bibliometric research, both in journals in the Information Science area and journals outside the discipline.

Construction of the "Three-integration" Rolling Development Mode in the Urban-rural Fringe from the Perspective of Thematic Business Engine : A Case Study of "Zhucheng Dinosaur Eco-city" in Shandong Province

Starting from the transformation and upgrading of traditional culture,the optimization and development of traditional industries,and the innovation of traditional models,this paper used cultural entrepreneurship to trigger the thematic business engine,and explored Zhucheng City with its unique dinosaur culture.It proposed"Three-integration"rolling development mode to build Zhucheng into a new highland of cultural entrepreneurship and create new competitiveness under the background of agricultural and rural modernization development.This paper also explored from the perspective of multi-subject collaboration of cultural entrepreneurship.Government needs to establish rolling development pilot projects and promote their application;enterprises need to play the engine role of thematic business through the mode of"getting larger to help smaller ones";the masses need to pay attention to the reaction of culture to the economy,so as to promote the wave of high-level promotion of cultural inheritance and urban-rural integration.

Perception of ChatGPT among Chinese Experts: A Thematic Analysis of a Semi-structured Interview

ChatGPT,as an emergent technique,has become a heat throughout the world.Currently,it was not known entirely to the public.To gain knowledge of how experts perceive and experience ChatGPT,a semi-structured interview was conducted.By doing thematic analysis of their interview reports,it found that the experts construed the chatbot not the same as some media advertised.They didn’t regard it as a threat to their occupation,but as a helper or an assistant both in life and work.Neither did they restrict its use in education or other fields.They viewed the challenges of ChatGPT in a welcomed and positive way.

A Study on the Instructional Design of Interdisciplinary Thematic Learning in Middle School Physical Education Based on the CASES-T Model

With the deepening of educational reform,interdisciplinary thematic learning,as an emerging educational model,has become a focus of attention in the field of educational research.Based on the STEM(science,technology,engineering,and mathematics)education concept and CASES-T(Content,Activity,Situation,Evaluation,Strategy-Target)model,this study provides a theoretical basis for the teaching design and implementation of interdisciplinary thematic learning in middle school physical education.Through the analysis of specific interdisciplinary thematic learning cases,it aims to provide theoretical support and practical guidance for the reform of middle school physical education through the CASES-T model-based interdisciplinary thematic teaching design research in middle school physical education,in order to enhance students’learning effects,cultivate core literacy in physical education,and promote students’all-round development.

Contrastive thematic analysis in research articles

Based on the theory of thematic complexity, a contrastive analysis on 2 sections selected from research articles-method and discussion, was conducted. The differences and similarities between the 2 sections in simple theme, multiple theme, textual theme, interpersonal theme, topical theme and thematic progression were analyzed and concluded. The author believes that the causes of the differences and similarities are the different genre features of the 2 sections and the academic features of the materials selected.

Analysis of Science Makes Sense from the Perspective of Thematic Structure

For each coherent passage, the ordering of sentences is governed by the topic. By identifying the sequencing pattern of sentences, the main point of a text will be clearly presented. Science Makes Sense is analyzed in this paper from the perspective of thematic structure to emphasize the importance of theme progression in English reading and writing.

The Application of Thematic Progression in CET-4 Argumentative Writing Teaching

Based on the theoretical foundation of thematic progression construction, this paper introduces several common patterns of thematic progression and attempts to find applicability of patterns of thematic progression in the teaching of CET-4 argumentative writing from the perspective of discourse so as to show the implication of these patterns for the teaching of college English writing.

Thematic Trends in Complementary and Alternative Medicine Applied in Cancer-Related Symptoms

Purpose： The main goal of this study is to discover the scientific evolution of Cancer-Related Symptoms in Complementary and Alternative Medicine research area, analyzing the articles indexed in the Web of Science database from 1980 to 2013.Design/Methodology/Approach： A co-word science mapping analysis is performed under a longitudinal framework（1980 to 2013）. The documental corpus is divided into two subperiods,1980–2008 and 2009–2013. Thus, the performance and impact rates, and conceptual evolution of the research field are shown.Findings： According to the results, the co-word analysis allows us to identify 12 main thematic areas in this emerging research field： anxiety, survivors and palliative care,meditation, treatment, symptoms and cancer types, postmenopause, cancer pain, low back pain, herbal medicine, children, depression and insomnia, inflammation mediators, and lymphedema. The different research lines are identified according to the main thematic areas,centered fundamentally on anxiety and suffering prevention. The scientific community can use this information to identify where the interest is focused and make decisions in different ways.Research limitation： Several limitations can be addressed： 1） some of the Complementary and Alternative Medicine therapies may not have been included; 2） only the documents indexed in Web of Science are analyzed; and 3） the thematic areas detected could change if another dataset was considered.Practical implications： The results obtained in the present study could be considered as an evidence-based framework in which future studies could be built.Originality/value： Currently, there are no studies that show the thematic evolution of this research area.

Landscape Pattern Analysis of Hainan Natural Meadow in China Based on Fragstats and Thematic Mapper

In order to study landscape pattern of Hainan natural meadow, the interpretation has been conducted on TM of natural meadow by using ArcGIS 9.3 and the vector data of natural meadow types in the test site have been obtained, which have been transformed into grid data in ArcView 3.3. Nine indexes have been selected for calculation based on Fragstats 3.3 and Excel 2007, including largest patch index, mean patch size, edge density, shape index, Simpson's diversity index, Simpson's evenness index, fragmentation index, dominance index and separation index. The results show that landscape patch shape of natural meadow is simple, fragmentation index and landscape diversity are high and landscape indexes are highly correlated.

This paper introduces four main types of Thematic Progression patterns and the analysis of English advertisement from Thematic Progression perspective.

An integrated classification method for thematic mapper imagery of plain and highland terrains

The classification of thematic mapper imagery in areas with strong topographic variations has proven problematic in the past using a single classifier, due to the changing sun illumination geometry. This often results in the phenomena of identical object with dissimilar spectrum and different objects with similar spectrum. In this paper, an integrated classification method that combines a decision tree with slope data, tasseled cap transformation indices and maximum likelihood classifier is introduced, to find an optimal classification method for thematic mapper imagery of plain and highland terrains. A Landsat 7 ETM+ image acquired over Hangzhou Bay, in eastern China was used to test the method. The results indicate that the performance of the inte- grated classifier is acceptably good in comparison with that of the existing most widely used maximum likelihood classifier. The integrated classifier depends on hypsography (variation in topography) and the characteristics of ground truth objects (plant and soil). It can greatly reduce the influence of the homogeneous spectrum caused by topographic variation. This integrated classifier might potentially be one of the most accurate classifiers and valuable tool for land cover and land use mapping of plain and highland terrains.

This paper discusses about how to use the theory of thematic progression in translation. Some linguists have talked about thematic progression in their works, but most of them are related to stylistics. This paper will pay much attention to the relationship between the patterns of thematic progression and the translation between English and Chinese, and how to use thematic progression in understanding and translating between English and Chinese.

Syntactic Characteristics and a Smart Construction Mechanism for Thematic Map Symbols

The construction of thematic map symbols is a very complex and intellectually demanding process,but thematic symbols can be automatically generated and easily shared on the web using the syntactic structure of semantic symbols.In this paper,the symbol types,inner structure,and design pattern are discussed.A syntactic construction theory based on letter (thematic maps primitive)-word (single thematic symbol)-sentence (combined symbols or complex symbols) structure model is proposed to automate the construction of thematic map symbols.As a result of this research,symbols can be defined using cartographic primitives which are arranged according to syntactic principles.A semiotic model and word-centered construction theory can be integrated into interactive cartography as represented by the technology of Internet.Finally,the concepts and schema of this theory are discussed,and some examples are presented based a web thematic cartographic system to verify its utility.

An Exploration of Building a Thematic Sub-database within the Framework of DDE:A New Detrital Zircon U-Pb Dating Database

Within the framework of the Deep-time Digital Earth(DDE)project,thematic databases driven by scientific issues will have strong scientific vitality.In the field of sedimentology,thematic databases based on the current unified sedimentary knowledge tree established by the Sedimentary Data Group(Fig.1),can solve specific scientific problems effectively and improve the scope and utility of the DDE platform significantly.

Predicting Simplified Thematic Progression Pattern for Discourse Analysis

The pattern of thematic progression,reflecting the semantic relationships between contextual two sentences,is an important subject in discourse analysis.We introduce a new corpus of Chinese news discourses annotated with thematic progression information and explore some computational methods to automatically extracting the discourse structural features of simplified thematic progression pattern(STPP)between contextual sentences in a text.Furthermore,these features are used in a hybrid approach to a major discourse analysis task,Chinese coreference resolution.This novel approach is built up via heuristic sieves and a machine learning method that comprehensively utilizes both the top-down STPP features and the bottom-up semantic features.Experimental results on the intersection of the CoNLL-2012 task shared dataset and the CDTC corpus demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach.

A Study on Semantic Coherence in Discourse Translation from the Perspective of Thematic Progression Patterns

This paper discusses the semantic coherence in discourse translation from the perspective of thematic progression, and holds that in translating a discourse the translator should spare no effort to retain the original thematic progression pattern in the target text, but when the original thematic progression pattern cannot be directly retained, the translator should construct his own thematic structure and substitute progression pattern in the target text, thus to make it as readable as the original text without distorting the original information structure. This paper also attempts to explore the circumstances under which the original thematic progression pattern can be retained and the substitute should be reconstructed.
