A Thematic Analysis of the Novel Open Secrets from Psychoanalysis Perspective

Alice Munro,the first short story writer in Canada to receive the Nobel Prize laureate in 2013,applies the unconscious to the portrayal of characters and the construction of engrossing stories.Based on the unconscious theory of Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis,this article focuses on one of Alice Munro’s short stories,Open Secrets,by analyzing the unconscious of representative characters,to explore their power conversion through the conflicts triggered by their unconscious mind.Via uncovering their unique personalities and values,as well as displaying their power against each other through conflict,this article reveals that the relationship between characters is sophisticated and changeable,and their power against each other has been a state of change in continuous conflicts.Behind the unconscious displays a thoroughly different comparison of forces:the strong who behaves violently and arrogantly actually shows weakness;in turn,the obedience and endurance of the weak strongly manifest a tenacious resistance.

Perception of ChatGPT among Chinese Experts:A Thematic Analysis of a Semi-structured Interview

ChatGPT,as an emergent technique,has become a heat throughout the world.Currently,it was not known entirely to the public.To gain knowledge of how experts perceive and experience ChatGPT,a semi-structured interview was conducted.By doing thematic analysis of their interview reports,it found that the experts construed the chatbot not the same as some media advertised.They didn’t regard it as a threat to their occupation,but as a helper or an assistant both in life and work.Neither did they restrict its use in education or other fields.They viewed the challenges of ChatGPT in a welcomed and positive way.

Influential factors of healthcare provider resilience in disasters:A thematic analysis

Objective:To identify the influential factors of healthcare staff resilience in disasters.Methods:In this qualitative study,the influential factors of healthcare staff resilience in disasters were investigated through interviewing 20 experts.The interviews were conducted face-to-face,and MAXQDA software version 10 was used to organize the data and thematic analysis.Results:The participants included 5 medical emergency technicians,5 physicians,2 Red Crescent technicians,and 8 nurses.The main influential factors of healthcare providers’resilience were limited relief infrastructure,supportive empowerment,organizational capitals,and contradictory consequences.Other important factors were resource limitation,confusion and uncertainty,empowerment training,comprehensive support,human and value capital,social capital,physical capital,suffering,disability,calm,and excellence.Conclusion:Improving healthcare providers’resilience can be achieved by reducing uncertainty,providing the physical,economic,and human resources,strengthening motivation and comprehensive supports.It is suggested that disaster managers consider all identified dimensions to improve the resilience of healthcare providers to serve better in disasters.Moreover,researchers should study each dimension to provide profound knowledge regarding resilience in disasters.

Sodium lauryl sulfate and its potential impacts on organisms and the environment:A thematic analysis

Due to its ubiquitous presence in the environment and the lack of a scientific consensus regarding the environmental safety of the widely used anionic surfactant Sodium Lauryl Sulfate(CAS No:151-21-3),a systematic literature review and thematic analysis was conducted.All studies about sodium lauryl sulfate(SLS)in the environment in key databases were reviewed,with coding methods used to identify impact categories from SLS exposure without potential narration bias.Based on the limited number of studies on SLS,there is empirical evidence of this surfactant contributing to environmental toxicity at various concentrations(0.004-3509 mg L^(-1)),with aquatic organisms at a higher risk from exposure.Furthermore,exposure to SLS can elicit changes to various organismic processes and environmental equilibrium.Hence,further study on SLS in various environmental compartments is recommended to monitor the level of SLS pollution,understand its behavior upon contact with various environmental media,and understand its impacts on flora and fauna.Lastly,SLS quantification should be done on commonly used consumer products to potentially regulate its use and to consequently curb SLS pollution from its source.

Content analysis of documents using neural networks: A study of Antarctic science research articles published in international journals

Content analysis of scientific papers emanating from Antarctic science research during the 25 years period （1980-- 2004） has been carried out using neural network based algorithm-CATPAC. A total of 10 942 research articles published in Science Citation Indexed （SCI） journals were used for the study. Normalized co-word matrix from 35 most-used significant words was used to study the semantic association between the words. Structural Equivalence blocks were constructed from these 35 most-used words. Four-block model solution was found to be optimum. The density table was dichotomized using the mean density of the table to derive the binary matrix, which was used to construct the network map. Network maps represent the thematic character of the blocks. The blocks showed preferred connection in establishing semantic relationship with the blocks, characterizing thematic composition of Antarctic science research. The analysis has provided an analytical framework for carrying out studies on the con- tent of scientific articles. The paper has shown the utility of co-word analysis in highlighting the important areas of research in Antarctic science.

“I Dread the Heart Surgery but it Keeps My Child Alive”—Experiences of Parents of Children with Right Ventricular Outflow Tract Anomalies during the Assessment for Cardiac Reoperation

Background:Parents of children with complex right ventricular outflow tract(RVOT)anomalies are confronted with their child’s need for heart surgery early in life and repeated reoperations later on.Preoperative assessment needs to be performed whenever an indication for reoperation is suspected.The aim was to illuminate the experiences of parents of children diagnosed with RVOT anomalies,in particular,how they experience their child’s heart disease and everyday life during the assessment and after the decision on whether to perform a reoperation.Method:Individual interviews(n=27)were conducted with nine parents on three occasions between 2014 and 2016 and analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis.Results:The analysis resulted in the following five main coexisting themes:The heart surgery keeps my child alive illuminates parents’experiences during and after the assessment and emphasizes that heart surgery,although dreaded,is central for their child’s survival;Everyday struggles illuminates the different struggles parents had to face to ensure that their child would be in the best possible condition;the remaining three themes,Unconditional love,Trust in life,and Togetherness,illuminate the ways in which the parents gained inner strength and confidence in their everyday lives.Conclusion:Although the parents were grateful for the assessment and had learned to navigate among the fears it aroused,they experienced several distressing situations during the assessment process that should be addressed.By inviting both the parents and their child to participate in the child’s care,individualized support can take into account the needs of both parents and child.

Exploration moving beyond medical facility walls:opportunities,challenges and attitudes of midwives towards planned homebirth:a qualitative

Background:The establishment of Saudi Vision 2030 has led to a shift from obstetric care to midwifery-led care in maternity care,giving rise to planned home birth(PHB).This study may enable midwives to carry out PHB and achieve the goals of the Saudi health vision.The general aim is to explore Saudi midwives’attitudes towards the PHB,opportunities and challenges associated with PHB implementation in Saudi Arabia.Methods:We employed a qualitative study design and conducted interviews using open-ended questions with 19 Saudi midwives recruited from thirteen health regions.Thematic analysis was manually performed to analyze the qualitative data.Results:Thematic analysis revealed seven major themes:midwives as care providers in PHB,health institutions,academic institutions,national policy for PHB,Women’s health status,socio-economic and physical environment suitability,and maternal and neonatal health outcomes.However,Saudi midwives would exhibit a favorable attitude towards PHB if decision-makers from the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education addressed the challenges and promoted opportunities for providers,organizations,and the population.Conclusion:The findings of the thematic analysis shed light on several positive aspects,including job opportunities and high financial incomes for midwives.However,they also revealed challenges such as a shortage of midwifery staff,a scarcity of midwifery academic programs,and an ineffective administrative support system for midwives.Integrating both sets of findings enhances the understanding of the challenges and opportunities of planned home birth in Saudi Arabia from various perspectives,capturing the breadth and depth of the obtained data.

China's landscape in oncology drug research:perspectives from research collaboration networks

Objective： Better understanding of China＇s landscape in oncology drug research is of great significance for discovering anti-cancer drugs in future. This article differs from previous studies by focusing on Chinese oncology drug research communities in co-publication networks at the institutional level. Moreover, this research aims to explore structures and behaviors of relevant research units by thematic community analysis and to address policy recommendations. Methods： This research used social network analysis to define an institutions network and to identify a community network which is characterized by thematic content. Results： A total of 675 sample articles from 2008 through 2012 were retrieved from the Science Citation Index Expanded （SCIE） database of Web of Science, and top institutions and institutional pairs are highlighted for further discussion. Meanwhile, this study revealed that institutions based in the Chinese mainland are located in a relatively central position, Taiwan＇s institutions are closely assembled on the side, and Hong Kong＇s units located in the middle of the Chinese mainland＇s and Taiwan＇s. Spatial division and institutional hierarchy are still critical barriers to research collaboration in the field of anti-cancer drugs in China. In addition, the communities focusing on hot research areas show the higher nodal degree, whereas communities giving more attention to rare research subjects are relatively marginalized to the periphery of network. Conclusions= This paper offers policy recommendations to accelerate cross-regional cooperation, such as through developing information technology and increasing investment. The brokers should focus more on outreach to other institutions. Finally, participation in topics of common interest is conducive to improved efficiency in research and development （R＆D） resource allocation.

“My ADHD Hellbrain”: A Twitter Data Science Perspective on a Behavioural Disorder

Purpose: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD) is a common behavioural condition. This article introduces a new data science method, word association thematic analysis, to investigate whether ADHD tweets can give insights into patient concerns and online communication needs. Design/methodology/approach: Tweets matching "my ADHD"(n=58,893) and 99 other conditions(n=1,341,442) were gathered and two thematic analyses conducted. Analysis 1: A standard thematic analysis of ADHD-related tweets. Analysis 2: A word association thematic analysis of themes unique to ADHD.Findings: The themes that emerged from the two analyses included people ascribing their brains agency to explain and justify their symptoms and using the concept of neurodivergence for a positive self-image. Research limitations: This is a single case study and the results may differ for other topics.Practical implications: Health professionals should be sensitive to patients' needs to understand their behaviour, find ways to justify and explain it to others and to be positive about their condition.Originality/value: Word association thematic analysis can give new insights into the(self-reported) patient perspective.

Exploring the Experiences of Chinese Patients Waiting for Heart Transplantation

Background: Patients waiting for heart transplantation (HT) have complex physiological and psychosocial problems. Factors such as psychological state, behavior, social relationships, and cultural background of patients influence the HT process, such as causing psychotic disorder, difficult decision and close dependence. Care during the waiting period needs to be aimed at not only treating the symptoms but also the specific status. Purpose: To describe the physical and psychosocial experiences of the patients waiting for HT in one general hospital in the northern part of China. Methods: A qualitative approach was used in this study. Fifteen patients waiting for HT were selected based on purposive sampling, and semi-structured interviews were carried out. Results: In the analysis process, reported experiences of the participants were categorized into five main themes as follows: 1) feeling the impact;2) uncertainty about the future;3) difficult to make decisions;4) negative emotions and 5) request support. Conclusion: This study provides an in-depth description of patients waiting for HT who haveexperienced many physical, psychosocial, and familial problems due to disease and their cultural background. It found that Chinese patients have some special experiences due to their psychosocial background. This study suggests that nurses should focus on not only physical but also psychosocial problems of these patients, and provide understandings to develop more effective strategies to solve their problems. Relevance to Clinical Practice: This study focused on the special patients who are waiting for heart transplantation, and got the special results about the feelings and experiences. The results can help the doctors and nurses to help the patients pass the special period smoothly.

What Stands in the Way of Bigger Internet with Virtually Unlimited IP Address in Cameroon: A Study of IPv6 Stakeholders in Cameroon

The purpose of this case study paper was to identify factors that Internet Protocol stakeholders consider as standing in the way of the transition to bigger, more secure and faster internet with virtually unlimited Internet Protocol address in Cameroon and was completed in two phases. Descriptive method was followed and two study instruments were designed and implemented, namely focus group interviews and questionnaire interviews. Both instruments were validated and implemented on a sample of (6) experts for the interviews and (115) for the questionnaire. The focus group data were analyzed using a thematic analysis technique, leading to the identification of six themes including lack of policies and incentives to promote IPv6 deployment at government level, many organizations are seeing IPv6 as an issue that will only affect them in the distant future and not looking at IPv6 technology as an innovation generation opportunity. Decisions on these issues need to change if IPv6 current status in Cameroon is to change. The findings were then validated in the final phase. This involved the deployment of a survey questionnaire to collect opinions of 115 IPv6 actors working in both public and private institutions in Cameroon. The results revealed that IPv6 was not sufficiently attended to by organizations in Cameroon. The study results may be of practical use for Government IT decision makers. A further and more comprehensive research into the topic is recommended.

Study Abroad Experience and Career Decision-Making: A Qualitative Study of Chinese Students

This research explores factors influencing Chinese overseas students’career decision-making.Based on the social cognitive career theory,a semi-structured interview schedule was devised to qualitatively investigate how Chinese students evaluated different factors and coped with career decision-making while studying abroad.The interview transcripts were addressed using thematic analysis.Family influences,overseas social life,and personal improvement were found to be the three key factors in shaping Chinese overseas students’career decision-making.Moreover,close interconnections were found among the three factors,and these had a combined impact on the decision-making process.The findings highlight the importance of a positive study abroad experience and its impact on international students’career decision-making.
