This study is devoted to the investigation of thermal criticality for a reactive gravity driven thin film flow of a third-grade fluid with adiabatic free surface down an inclined isothermal plane. It is assumed that the reaction is exothermic under Arrhenius kinetics, neglecting the consumption of the material. The governing non-linear equations for conservation of momentum and energy are obtained and solved by using a new computational approach based on a special type of Hermite-Padé approximation technique implemented in MAPLE. This semi-numerical scheme offers some advantages over solutions obtained with traditional methods such as finite differences, spectral method, and shooting method. It reveals the analytical structure of the solution function. Important properties of overall flow structure including velocity field, temperature field, thermal criticality, and bifurcations are discussed. 展开更多

In order to study the relationship between charge size and thermal initiation critical temperature of explosive in defined conditions,cook-off test about JH explosive was carried out at a heating rate of 1 ℃/min using self-designed cook-off experiment setup based on thermostatic control technology.Numerical simulation was conducted to study the effects of different charge sizes on thermal initiation critical temperature of explosives with FLUENT software.Experiment results show that there is a thermal initiation critical temperature in cook-off bomb.Simulation results show that when the ratio of the length to diameter of explosives grains is a fixed value, the thermal initiation critical temperature of explosives decreases with the increase of the diameter of explosives grains. When the grains diameter of explosives increase up to a certain value, the influence of charge size on thermal initiation critical temperature tends to be weakened.Charge size has no influence on the ignition point of explosives. The ignition point is always in the center of the grain. 展开更多

A self-organized criticality model of a thermal sandpile is formulated for the first time to simulate the dynamic process with interaction between avalanche events on the fast time scale and diffusive transports on the slow time scale. The main characteristics of the model are that both particle and energy avalanches of sand grains are considered simultaneously. Properties of intermittent transport and improved confinement are analyzed in detail. The results imply that the intermittent phenomenon such as blobs in the low confinement mode as well as edge localized modes in the high confinement mode observed in tokamak experiments are not only determined by the edge plasma physics, but also affected by the core plasma dynamics. 展开更多

The thermal decomposition behavior of composite modified double-base(CMDB) propellant containing cyclotrimethylene trinitramine(RDX) was studied via a Calvet microcalorimeter at five different heating rates. The activation energy(E) and the pre-exponential factor(A) of two obvious exothermic processes were obtained by Kissinger's method and Ozawa's method. The entropy of activation(△S^≠), the enthalpy of activation(△H^≠), and the free energy of activation(△G^≠) of the first stage were calculated. To evaluate the thermal hazard of the RDX-CMDB propellant, the critical temperature of thermal explosion(Tb), the self acceleration decomposition temperature(Tsgox), the adiabatic decomposition temperature increment(ATad) and the time-to-explosion of adiabatic system(t) were presented as 145.3 ℃, 138.15 ℃, 1634 K and 583.71 s(n=0) and 586.28 s(n=1), respectively. 展开更多

Accurate estimation of liquid thermal conductivity is highly necessary to appropriately design equipments in different industries. Respect to this necessity, in the current investigation a feed-forward artificial neural network(ANN) model is examined to correlate the liquid thermal conductivity of normal and aromatic hydrocarbons at the temperatures range of 257–338 K and atmospheric pressure. For this purpose, 956 experimental thermal conductivities for normal and aromatic hydrocarbons are collected from different previously published literature.During the modeling stage, to discriminate different substances, critical temperature(Tc), critical pressure(Pc)and acentric factor(ω) are utilized as the network inputs besides the temperature. During the examination, effects of different transfer functions and number of neurons in hidden layer are investigated to find the optimum network architecture. Besides, statistical error analysis considering the results obtained from available correlations and group contribution methods and proposed neural network is performed to reliably check the feasibility and accuracy of the proposed method. Respect to the obtained results, it can be concluded that the proposed neural network consisted of three layers namely, input, hidden and output layers with 22 neurons in hidden layer was the optimum ANN model. Generally, the proposed model enables to correlate the thermal conductivity of normal and aromatic hydrocarbons with absolute average relative deviation percent(AARD), mean square error(MSE), and correlation coefficient(R^2) of lower than 0.2%, 1.05 × 10^(-7) and 0.9994, respectively. 展开更多

We reported data on thermal preference, thermal tolerance and the thermal dependence of digestive performance for two Phrynocephalus lizards (P. frontalis and P. versicolor), and compared data among lizards so far studied worldwide. Mean values for selected body temperature (Tsel) and critical thermal maximum (CTMax) were greater in P versicolor, whereas mean values for critical thermal minimum (CTMin) did not differ between the two species. The two lizards differed in food intake, but not in food passage time, apparent digestive coefficient (ADC) and assimilation efficiency (AE), across the experimental tem- peratures. Four general conclusions can be drawn from published data. Firstly, thermal preference and thermal tolerance differ among lizards differing in distribution, temporal activity pattern and habitat use. Lizards in thermally more variable regions are better able to tolerate low and high temperatures. Diurnal lizards generally select higher body temperatures than nocturnal lizards, and lizards using habitats with direct sun exposure generally selected higher body temperatures and are better able to tolerate high temperatures. Secondly, CTMax is positively correlated with Tsel. Lizards more likely exposed to extremely high temperatures while active select higher body temperatures than those using shaded habitats. Thirdly, the effects of body temperature on food intake, food passage time, ADC and AE differ among lizards, but it seems to be common among lizards that ADC and AE are less thermally sensitive than food intake and food passage time. Lastly, ADC is dependent on the type of food ingested, with insectivorous lizards digesting food more efficiently than herbivorous lizards 展开更多

Under stressful thermal environments, insects adjust their behavior and physi- ology to maintain key life-history activities and improve survival. For interacting species, mutual or antagonistic, thermal stress may affect the participants in differing ways, which may then affect the outcome of the ecological relationship. In agroecosystems, this may be the fate of relationships between insect pests and their antagonistic parasitoids un- der acute and chronic thermal variability. Against this background, we investigated the thermal tolerance of different developmental stages of Chilo partellus Swinhoe (Lepi- doptera: Crambidae) and its larval parasitoid, Cotesia sesamiae Cameron (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) using both dynamic and static protocols. When exposed for 2 h to a static temperature, lower lethal temperatures ranged from -9 to 6 ℃, -14 to -2 ℃, and -1 to 4 ℃ while upper lethal temperatures ranged from 37 to 48 ℃, 41 to 49 ℃, and 36 to 39 ℃ for C partellus eggs, larvae, and C. sesamiae adults, respectively. Faster heating rates improved critical thermal maxima (CTmax) in C partellus larvae and adult C partel- lus and C sesamiae. Lower cooling rates improved critical thermal minima (CTmin) in C partellus and C. sesamiae adults while compromising CTmin in C. partellus larvae. The mean supercooling points (SCPs) for C. partellus larvae, pupae, and adults were -11.82 ± 1.78, -10.43 ±1.73 and -15.75 ±2.47, respectively. Heat knock-down time (HKDT) and chill-coma recovery time (CCRT) varied significantly between C partellus larvae and adults. Larvae had higher HKDT than adults, while the latter recovered significantly faster following chill-coma. Current results suggest developmental stage differences in C partellus thermal tolerance (with respect to lethal temperatures and critical thermal limits) and a compromised temperature tolerance of parasitoid C. sesamiae relative to its host, suggesting potential asynchrony between host-parasitoid population phenology and con- sequently biocontrol efficacy under global change. These results have broad implications to biological pest management insect-natural enemy interactions under rapidly changing thermal environments. 展开更多
