In the framework of the finite deformation theory, the plastic collapse analysis of thin-walled pipes subjected to the internal pressure is conducted on the basis of the unified strength criterion (USC). An analytical solution of the burst pressure for pipes with capped ends is derived, which includes the strength differential effect and takes the influence of strength criterion on the burst pressure into account. In addition, a USC- based analytical solution of the burst pressure for end-opened pipes under the internal pressure is obtained. By discussion, it is found that for the end-capped pipes, the influence of different yield criteria and the strength differential effect on the burst pressure are significant, while for the end-opened pipes, the burst pressure is independent of the specific form of the strength criterion and strength difference in tension and compression. 展开更多

The propagation of stress waves in a large-diameter pipe pile for low strain dynamic testing cannot be explained properly by traditional 1D wave theories. A new computational model is established to obtain a wave equation that can describe the dynamic response of a large-diameter thin-walled pipe pile to a transient point load during a low strain integrity test. An analytical solution in the time domain is deduced using the separation of variables and variation of constant methods. The validity of this new solution is verifi ed by an existing analytical solution under free boundary conditions. The results of this time domain solution are also compared with the results of a frequency domain solution and fi eld test data. The comparisons indicate that the new solution agrees well with the results of previous solutions. Parametric studies using the new solution with reference to a case study are also carried out. The results show that the mode number affects the accuracy of the dynamic response. A mode number greater than 10 is required to enable the calculated dynamic responses to be independent of the mode number. The dynamic response is also greatly affected by soil properties. The larger the side resistance, the smaller the displacement response and the smaller the refl ected velocity wave crest. The displacement increases as the stress waves propagate along the pile when the pile shaft is free. The incident waves of displacement and velocity responses of the pile are not the same among different points in the circumferential direction on the pile top. However, the arrival time and peak value of the pile tip refl ected waves are almost the same among different points on the pile top. 展开更多

There are lots of researches on fixture layout optimization for large thin-walled parts.Current researches focus on the positioning problem,i.e.,optimizing the positions of a constant number of fixtures. However, how to determine the number of fixtures is ignored. In most cases, the number of fixtures located on large thin-walled parts is determined based on engineering experience, which leads to huge fixture number and extra waste. Therefore, this paper constructs an optimization model to minimize the number of fixtures. The constraints are set in the optimization model to ensure that the part deformation is within the surface profile tolerance. In addition, the assembly gap between two parts is also controlled. To conduct the optimization, this paper develops an improved particle swarm optimization(IPSO)algorithm by integrating the shrinkage factor and adaptive inertia weight. In the algorithm, particles are encoded according to the fixture position. Each dimension of the particle is assigned to a sub-region by constraining the optional position range of each fixture to improve the optimization efficiency. Finally,a case study on ship curved panel assembly is provided to prove that our method can optimize the number of fixtures while meeting the assembly quality requirements. This research proposes a method to optimize the number of fixtures, which can reduce the number of fixtures and achieve deformation control at the same time. 展开更多

Lightweight thin-walled structures with lattice infill are widely desired in satellite for their high stiffness-to-weight ratio and superior buckling strength resulting fromthe sandwich effect.Such structures can be fabricated bymetallic additive manufacturing technique, such as selective laser melting(SLM).However, the maximum dimensions of actual structures are usually in a sub-meter scale, which results in restrictions on their appliance in aerospace and other fields. In this work,a meter-scale thin-walled structure with lattice infill is designed for the fuel tank supporting component of the satellite by integrating a self-supporting lattice into the thickness optimization of the thin-wall.The designed structure is fabricated by SLM of AlSi10Mg and cold metal transfer welding technique.Quasi-static mechanical tests and vibration tests are both conducted to verify the mechanical strength of the designed large-scale lattice thin-walled structure. The experimental results indicate that themeter-scale thin-walled structure with lattice infill could meet the dimension and lightweight requirements of most spacecrafts. 展开更多

As critical components of aircraft skins and rocket fuel storage tank shells, large thin-walled workpieces are susceptible to vibration and deformation during machining due to their weak local stiffness. To address these challenges,we propose a novel tunable electromagnetic semi-active dynamic vibration absorber(ESADVA),which integrates with a magnetic suction follower to form a followed ESADVA(follow-ESADVA)for mirror milling. This system combines a tunable magnet oscillator with a follower, enabling real-time vibration absorption and condition feedback throughout the milling process.Additionally, the device supports self-sensing and frequency adjustment by providing feedback to a linear actuator, which alters the distance between magnets. This resolves the traditional issue of being unable to directly monitor vibration at the machining point due to space constraints and tool interference. The frequency shift characteristics and vibration absorption performance are comprehensively investigated.Theoretical and experimental results demonstrate that the prototyped follow-ESADVA achieves frequency synchronization with the milling tool, resulting in a vibration suppression rate of approximately 47.57%.Moreover,the roughness of the machined surface decreases by18.95%,significantly enhancing the surface quality. The results of this work pave the way for higher-quality machined surfaces and a more stable mirror milling process. 展开更多

Pitting corrosion is harmful during bridge construction, which will lead to uneven roughness of steel surfaces and reduce the thickness of steel.Hence, the effect of pitting corrosion on the mechanical properties of cold-formed thin-walled steel stub columns is studied, and the empirical formulas are established through regression fitting to predict the ultimate load of web and flange under pitting corrosion. In detail, the failure modes and load-displacement curves of specimens with different locations, area ratios, and depths are obtained through a large number of non-linear finite element analysis. As for the specimens with pitting corrosion on the web,all the specimens are subject to local buckling failure, and the failure mode will not change with pitting corrosion, but the failure location will change with pitting corrosion location;the size, location, and area ratio of pitting corrosion have little influence on the ultimate load of cold-formed thin-walled steel short columns, but the loss rate of pitting corrosion section area has a greater impact on the ultimate bearing capacity. As for the specimen with flange pitting corrosion, the location and area ratio of pitting corrosion have less influence on the ultimate load of cold-formed thin-walled steel short columns, and the section area loss rate has greater influence on the ultimate bearing capacity;the impact of web pitting corrosion on the ultimate load is greater than that of flange pitting corrosion under the same condition of pitting corrosion section area. The prediction formulas of limit load which are suitable for pitting corrosion of web and flange are established, which can provide a reference for performance evaluation of corroded cold-formed thin-walled steel. 展开更多

Mechanically lined pipe(MLP)is often used for offshore oil and gas transport because of its low cost and corrosion resistance.During installation and operation, the pipe may undergo severe bending deformation, which causes the liner to separate from the outer pipe and buckles, affecting the stability of the whole line.In this paper, the buckling response of MLP subjected to bending is investigated to clarify its bending characteristics by employing both experiments, numerical simulation,as theoretical methods. Two types of MLPs were manufactured with GB 45 carbon steel(SLP)and Al 6061(ALP)used as the outer pipe material, respectively. The hydraulic expansion and bending experiments of small-scale MLPs are conducted. In addition to the ovalized shape of the cross-section for the SLP specimens, the copper liner was found to wrinkle on the compressive side.In contrast, the liner of ALP remains intact without developing any wrinkling and collapse mode.In addition,a dedicated numerical framework and theoretical models were also established. It was found both the manufacturing and bending responses of the MLP can be well reproduced, and the predicted maximum moment and critical curvatures are in good agreement with the experimental results. 展开更多

The application of continuous natural fibers as reinforcement in composite thin-walled structures offers a feasible approach to achieve light weight and high strength while remaining environmentally friendly. In addition, additive manufacturing technology provides a favorable process foundation for its realization. In this study, the printability and energy absorption properties of 3D printed continuous fiber reinforced thin-walled structures with different configurations were investigated. The results suggested that a low printing speed and a proper layer thickness would mitigate the printing defects within the structures. The printing geometry accuracy of the structures could be further improved by rounding the sharp corners with appropriate radii. This study successfully fabricated structures with vari-ous configurations characterized by high geometric accuracy through printing parameters optimization and path smoothing. Moreover, the compressive property and energy absorption characteristics of the structures under quasi-static axial compression were evaluated and compared. It was found that all studied thin-walled structures exhibited progressive folding deformation patterns during compression. In particular, energy absorption process was achieved through the combined damage modes of plastic deformation, fiber pullout and delamination.Furthermore, the com-parison results showed that the hexagonal structure exhibited the best energy absorption performance. The study revealed the structure-mechanical property relationship of 3D printed continuous fiber reinforced composite thin-walled structures through the analysis of multiscale failure characteristics and load response, which is valuable for broadening their applications. 展开更多

The collapse pressure is a key parameter when RTPs are applied in harsh deep-water environments. To investigate the collapse of RTPs,numerical simulations and hydrostatic pressure tests are conducted. For the numerical simulations, the eigenvalue analysis and Riks analysis are combined,in which the Hashin failure criterion and fracture energy stiffness degradation model are used to simulate the progressive failure of composites, and the“infinite”boundary conditions are applied to eliminate the boundary effects. As for the hydrostatic pressure tests,RTP specimens were placed in a hydrostatic chamber after filled with water. It has been observed that the cross-section of the middle part collapses when it reaches the maximum pressure. The collapse pressure obtained from the numerical simulations agrees well with that in the experiment.Meanwhile, the applicability of NASA SP-8007 formula on the collapse pressure prediction was also discussed. It has a relatively greater difference because of the ignorance of the progressive failure of composites. For the parametric study,it is found that RTPs have much higher first-ply-failure pressure when the winding angles are between 50°and 70°.Besides,the effect of debonding and initial ovality, and the contribution of the liner and coating are also discussed. 展开更多

In machining processes, chatter vibrations are always regarded as one of the major limitations for production quality and efficiency.Accurate and timely monitoring of chatter is helpful to maintain stable machining operations. At present, most chatter monitoring methods are based on the energy level at specified chatter frequencies or frequency bands. However, the spectral features of chatter could change during machining operations due to complexity and time-varying dynamics of the physical machining process. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the time-varying chatter features in turning of thin-walled tubular workpieces from the perspective of entropy. The airborne acoustics was selected as the source of information for machining condition monitoring.First, corresponding to the distinguishing surface topographies relevant to machining conditions, the features of the sound signal emitted during turning of the thin-walled cylindrical workpieces were extracted using the spectral analysis and wavelet packet transform, respectively. It was shown that the dominant vibration frequency as well as the energy distribution could shift with the transition of the machining status. After that, two relative entropy indicators based on the spectrum and the wavelet packet energy were constructed to identify chattering events in turning of the thin-walled tubes. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed indicators could accurately reflect the transition of machining conditions with high sensitivity and robustness in comparison with the traditional FFT-based methods. The achievement of this study lays the foundations of the online chatter monitoring and control technique for turning of the thin-walled tubular workpieces. 展开更多

Mathematical physics equations are often utilized to describe physical phenomena in various fields of science and engineering. One such equation is the Fourier equation, which is a commonly used and effective method for evaluating the effectiveness of temperature control measures for mass concrete. One important measure for temperature control in mass concrete is the use of cooling water pipes. However, the mismatch of grids between large-scale concrete models and small-scale cooling pipe models can result in a significant waste of calculation time when using the finite element method. Moreover, the temperature of the water in the cooling pipe needs to be iteratively calculated during the thermal transfer process. The substructure method can effectively solve this problem, and it has been validated by scholars. The Abaqus/Python secondary development technology provides engineers with enough flexibility to combine the substructure method with an iteration algorithm, which enables the creation of a parametric modeling calculation for cooling water pipes. This paper proposes such a method, which involves iterating the water pipe boundary and establishing the water pipe unit substructure to numerically simulate the concrete temperature field that contains a cooling water pipe.To verify the feasibility and accuracy of the proposed method, two classic numerical examples were analyzed. The results showed that this method has good applicability in cooling pipe calculations. When the value of the iteration parameterαis 0.4,the boundary temperature of the cooling water pipes can meet the accuracy requirements after 4∼5 iterations, effectively improving the computational efficiency.Overall, this approach provides a useful tool for engineers to analyze the temperature control measures accurately and efficiently for mass concrete, such as cooling water pipes, using Abaqus/Python secondary development. 展开更多

To solve the problem of low broadband multi-directional vibration control of fluid-conveying pipes,a novel metamaterial periodic structure with multi-directional wide bandgaps is proposed.First,an integrated design method is proposed for the longitudinal and transverse wave control of fluid-conveying pipes, and a novel periodic structure unit model is constructed for vibration reduction.Based on the bandgap vibration reduction mechanism of the acoustic metamaterial periodic structure, the material parameters, structural parameters, and the arrangement interval of the periodic structure unit are optimized. The finite element method(FEM)is used to predict the vibration transmission characteristics of the fluid-conveying pipe installed with the vibration reduction periodic structure. Then, the wave/spectrum element method(WSEM)and experimental test are used to verify the calculated results above.Lastly, the vibration attenuation characteristics of the structure under different conditions, such as rubber material parameters, mass ring material, and fluid-structure coupling effect, are analyzed. The results show that the structure can produce a complete bandgap of 46 Hz-75 Hz in the low-frequency band below 100 Hz,which can effectively suppress the low broadband vibration of the fluidconveying pipe.In addition,a high damping rubber material is used in the design of the periodic structure unit, which realizes the effective suppression of each formant peak of the pipe, and improves the vibration reduction effect of the fluid-conveying pipe.Meanwhile, the structure has the effect of suppressing both bending vibration and longitudinal vibration, and effectively inhibits the transmission of transverse waves and longitudinal waves in the pipe. The research results provide a reference for the application of acoustic metamaterials in the multi-directional vibration control of fluid-conveying pipes. 展开更多

Urban sewer pipes are a vital infrastructure in modern cities, and their defects must be detected in time to prevent potential malfunctioning. In recent years,to relieve the manual efforts by human experts, models based on deep learning have been introduced to automatically identify potential defects. However, these models are insufficient in terms of dataset complexity, model versatility and performance. Our work addresses these issues with amulti-stage defect detection architecture using a composite backbone Swin Transformer.Themodel based on this architecture is trained using a more comprehensive dataset containingmore classes of defects.By ablation studies on the modules of combined backbone Swin Transformer,multi-stage detector,test-time data augmentation and model fusion,it is revealed that they all contribute to the improvement of detection accuracy from different aspects. The model incorporating all these modules achieves the mean Average Precision(mAP)of 78.6% at an Intersection over Union(IoU)threshold of 0.5.This represents an improvement of 14.1% over the ResNet50 Faster Region-based Convolutional Neural Network(R-CNN)model and a 6.7% improvement over You Only Look Once version 6(YOLOv6)-large,the highest in the YOLO methods. In addition, for other defect detection models for sewer pipes, although direct comparison with themis infeasible due to the unavailability of their private datasets, our results are obtained from a more comprehensive dataset and have superior generalization capabilities. 展开更多

Based on the generalized Hamilton's principle, the nonlinear governing equation of an axially functionally graded(AFG)pipe is established. The non-trivial equilibrium configuration is superposed by the modal functions of a simply supported beam.Via the direct multi-scale method, the response and stability boundary to the pulsating fluid velocity are solved analytically and verified by the differential quadrature element method(DQEM).The influence of Young's modulus gradient on the parametric resonance is investigated in the subcritical and supercritical regions. In general, the pipe in the supercritical region is more sensitive to the pulsating excitation. The nonlinearity changes from hard to soft, and the non-trivial equilibrium configuration introduces more frequency components to the vibration.Besides, the increasing Young's modulus gradient improves the critical pulsating flow velocity of the parametric resonance, and further enhances the stability of the system. In addition, when the temperature increases along the axial direction, reducing the gradient parameter can enhance the response asymmetry. This work further complements the theoretical analysis of pipes conveying pulsating fluid. 展开更多

Despite the success of guided wave ultrasonic inspection for internal defect detection in steel pipes, its application on polyethylene(PE)pipe remains relatively unexplored. The growth of internal cracks in PE pipe severely affects its pressure-holding capacity, hence the early detection of internal cracks is crucial for effective pipeline maintenance strategies. This study extends the scope of guided wave-based ultrasonic testing to detect the growth of internal cracks in a natural gas distribution PE pipe.Laboratory experiments and a finite element model were planned to study the wave-crack interaction at different stages of axially oriented internal crack growth with a piezoceramic transducer-based setup arranged in a pitch-catch configuration.Mode dispersion analysis supplemented with preliminary experiments was performed to isolate the optimal inspection frequency, leading to the selection of the T(0,1)mode at 50-kHz for the investigation.A transmission index based on the energy of the T(0,1)mode was developed to trace the extent of simulated crack growth. The findings revealed an inverse linear correlation between the transmission index and the crack depth for crack growth beyond 20%crack depth. 展开更多
