A semi-implicit and Eulerian - Lagrangian finite difference method for three-dimensionalshallow flow has been extended to a more complete system of equations incorporating second-moment turbulence closure model and transport equations of salinity and temperature. The simulation for flooding and drying of mudflats has been improved. The model is applied to Xiamen waters. Based on extensive survey data, water level elevation, temperature and salinity field along the eastern open boundary and at the Jiulong River inlets and runoffs are analyzed, specified and calibrated. The computed results show good agreement with the measured data, reproduce flooding, emergence of large and complex mudflat region. 展开更多

The simulation of salinity at different locations of a tidal river using physically-based hydrodynamic models is quite cumbersome because it requires many types of data, such as hydrological and hydraulic time series at boundaries, river geometry, and adjusted coefficients. Therefore, an artificial neural network (ANN) technique using a back-propagation neural network (BPNN) and a radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) is adopted as an effective alternative in salinity simulation studies. The present study focuses on comparing the performance of BPNN, RBFNN, and three-dimensional hydrodynamic models as applied to a tidal estuarine system. The observed salinity data sets collected from 18 to 22 May, 16 to 22 October, and 26 to 30 October 2002 (totaling 4320 data points) were used for BPNN and RBFNN model training and for hydrodynamic model calibration. The data sets collected from 30 May to 2 June and 11 to 15 November 2002 (totaling 2592 data points) were adopted for BPNN and RBFNN model verification and for hydrodynamic model verification. The results revealed that the ANN (BPNN and RBFNN) models were capable of predicting the nonlinear time series behavior of salinity to the multiple forcing signals of water stages at different stations and freshwater input at upstream boundaries. The salinity predicted by the ANN models was better than that predicted by the physically based hydrodynamic model. This study suggests that BPNN and RBFNN models are easy-to-use modeling tools for simulating the salinity variation in a tidal estuarine system. 展开更多

A high-order numerical method for three-dimensional hydrodynamics is p-resented.The present method applies high-order compact schemes in space and a Runge-Kutta scheme in time to solve the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with the k-ǫturbulence model in an orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system. In ad-dition,a two-dimensional equation is derived from the depth-averaged momentum equations to predict the water level. The proposed method isfirst validated by its application to simulateflow in a 180◦curved laboratoryflume. It is found that the simulated results agree with measurements and are better than those from SIMPLEC algorithm. Then the method is applied to study three-dimensional hydrodynamics in a natural river, and the simulated results are in accordance with measurements. 展开更多

Lake Fuxian is the largest deep freshwater lake in China. Although its average water quality meets Class I of the China National Water Quality Standard (CNWQS), i.e., GB3838-2002, monitoring data indicate that the water quality approaches the Class II threshold in some areas. Thus it is urgent to reduce the watershed load through the total maximum daily load (TMDL) program. A three-dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality model was developed for Lake Fuxian, simulating flow circulation and pollutant fate and transport. The model development process consists of several steps, including grid generation, initial and boundary condition configurations, and model calibration processes. The model accurately reproduced the observed water surface elevation, spatiotemporal variations in temperature, and total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentrations, suggesting a reasonable numerical representation of the prototype system for further TMDL analyses. The TMDL was calculated using two interpretations of the water quality standards for Class I of the CNWQS based on the maximum instantaneous surface and annual average surface water concentrations. Analysis of the first scenario indicated that the TN, TP and COD loads should be reduced by 66%, 68% and 57%, respectively. Water quality was the highest priority; however, local economic development and cost feasibility for load reduction can pose significant issues. In the second interpretation, the model results showed that, under the existing conditions, the average water quality meets the Class I standard and therefore load reduction is unnecessary. Future studies are needed to conduct risk and cost assessments for realistic decision-making. 展开更多

The three-dimensional instability of an electrically conducting fluid between two parallel plates affected by an imposed transversal magnetic field is numerically investigated by a Chebyshev collocation method. The QZ method is utilized to obtain neutral curves of the linear instability. The details of instability are analyzed by solving the generalized Orr-Sommerfeld equation. The critical Reynolds number Rec, the stream-wise and span-wise critical wave numbers αc and βc are obtained for a wide range of Hartmann number Ha. The effects of Lorentz force and span-wise perturbation on three-dimensional instability are investigated. The results show that magnetic field would suppress the instability and critical Reynolds number tends to be larger than that for two-dimensional instability. 展开更多

Organic solid waste(OSW)contains many renewable materials. The pyrolysis and gasification of OSW can realize resource utilization, and its products can be used for methanation reaction to produce synthetic natural gas in the specific reactor. In order to understand the dynamic characteristics of the reactor,a three-dimensional numerical model has been established by the method of Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD).Along the height of the reactor, the particle distribution in the bed becomes thinner and the mean solid volume fraction decreases from 4.18%to 0.37%.Meanwhile,the pressure fluctuation range decreased from 398.76 Pa at the entrance to a much lower value of 74.47 Pa at the exit.In this simulation, three parameters of gas inlet velocity, operating temperature and solid particle diameter are changed to explore their influences on gas-solid multiphase flow. The results show that gas velocity has a great influence on particle distribution. When the gas inlet velocity decreases from 6.51 to 1.98 m/s,the minimum height that particles can reach decreases from 169 to 100 mm.Additionally,as the operating temperature increases, the particle holdup inside the reactor changes from 0.843%to 0.700%.This indicates that the particle residence time reduces, which is not conducive to the follow-up reaction. Moreover, with the increase of particle size, the fluctuation range of the pressure at the bottom of the reactor increases, and its standard deviation increases from 55.34 to 1266.37 Pa. 展开更多

Using the Fourier helical decomposition, we obtain the absolute statistical equilibrium spectra of left- and right-handed helical modes in the incompressible ideal Hall magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). It is shown that the left-handed helical modes play a major role on the spectral transfer properties of turbulence when the generalized helicity and magnetic helicity are both positive. In contrast, the right-handed helical modes will play a major role when both are negative. Furthermore, we also find that if the generalized helicity and magnetic helicity have opposite signs, the tendency of equilibrium spectra to condense at the large or small wave numbers will be presented in different helical sectors. This indicates that the generalized helicity dominates the forward cascade and the magnetic helicity dominates the inverse cascade properties of the Hall MHD turbulence. 展开更多

Through combined applications of the transfer-matrix method and asymptotic expansion technique,we formulate a theory to predict the three-dimensional response of micropolar plates. No ad hoc assumptions regarding through-thickness assumptions of the field variables are made, and the governing equations are two-dimensional,with the displacements and microrotations of the mid-plane as the unknowns.Once the deformation of the mid-plane is solved,a three-dimensional micropolar elastic field within the plate is generated, which is exact up to the second order except in the boundary region close to the plate edge.As an illustrative example, the bending of a clamped infinitely long plate caused by a uniformly distributed transverse force is analyzed and discussed in detail. 展开更多

Hypoxia is a typical feature of the tumor microenvironment, one of the most critical factors affecting cell behavior and tumor progression. However, the lack of tumor models able to precisely emulate natural brain tumor tissue has impeded the study of the effects of hypoxia on the progression and growth of tumor cells. This study reports a three-dimensional(3D)brain tumor model obtained by encapsulating U87MG(U87)cells in a hydrogel containing type I collagen. It also documents the effect of various oxygen concentrations(1%,7%,and 21%)in the culture environment on U87 cell morphology, proliferation, viability, cell cycle, apoptosis rate, and migration. Finally,it compares two-dimensional(2D)and 3D cultures. For comparison purposes, cells cultured in flat culture dishes were used as the control(2D model).Cells cultured in the 3D model proliferated more slowly but had a higher apoptosis rate and proportion of cells in the resting phase(G0 phase)/gap I phase(G1 phase)than those cultured in the 2D model.Besides, the two models yielded significantly different cell morphologies.Finally,hypoxia(e.g.,1%O2)affected cell morphology, slowed cell growth, reduced cell viability, and increased the apoptosis rate in the 3D model. These results indicate that the constructed 3D model is effective for investigating the effects of biological and chemical factors on cell morphology and function, and can be more representative of the tumor microenvironment than 2D culture systems. The developed 3D glioblastoma tumor model is equally applicable to other studies in pharmacology and pathology. 展开更多

Spinal cord injury is considered one of the most difficult injuries to repair and has one of the worst prognoses for injuries to the nervous system.Following surgery, the poor regenerative capacity of nerve cells and the generation of new scars can make it very difficult for the impaired nervous system to restore its neural functionality.Traditional treatments can only alleviate secondary injuries but cannot fundamentally repair the spinal cord.Consequently, there is a critical need to develop new treatments to promote functional repair after spinal cord injury.Over recent years, there have been seve ral developments in the use of stem cell therapy for the treatment of spinal cord injury.Alongside significant developments in the field of tissue engineering,three-dimensional bioprinting technology has become a hot research topic due to its ability to accurately print complex structures. This led to the loading of three-dimensional bioprinting scaffolds which provided precise cell localization. These three-dimensional bioprinting scaffolds co uld repair damaged neural circuits and had the potential to repair the damaged spinal cord.In this review,we discuss the mechanisms underlying simple stem cell therapy, the application of different types of stem cells for the treatment of spinal cord injury, and the different manufa cturing methods for three-dimensional bioprinting scaffolds. In particular,we focus on the development of three-dimensional bioprinting scaffolds for the treatment of spinal cord injury. 展开更多

We have recently proposed a new technique of plasma tailoring by laser-driven hydrodynamic shockwaves generated on both sides of a gas jet[Marquès et al.,Phys.Plasmas 28,023103(2021)].In a continuation of this numerical work,we study experimentally the influence of the tailoring on proton acceleration driven by a high-intensity picosecond laser in three cases:without tailoring,by tailoring only the entrance side of the picosecond laser, and by tailoring both sides of the gas jet.Without tailoring, the acceleration is transverse to the laser axis, with a low-energy exponential spectrum, produced by Coulomb explosion. When the front side of the gas jet is tailored,a forward acceleration appears, which is significantly enhanced when both the front and back sides of the plasma are tailored. This forward acceleration produces higher-energy protons, with a peaked spectrum, and is in good agreement with the mechanism of collisionless shock acceleration(CSA).The spatiotemporal evolution of the plasma profile is characterized by optical shadowgraphy of a probe beam. The refraction and absorption of this beam are simulated by post-processing 3D hydrodynamic simulations of the plasma tailoring.Comparison with the experimental results allows estimation of the thickness and near-critical density of the plasma slab produced by tailoring both sides of the gas jet. These parameters are in good agreement with those required for CSA. 展开更多

To adapt to the change of aquaculture workshop site, optimize the shape of aquaculture tanks and improve the utilization rate of breeding space,it is necessary to determine the appropriate length width ratio parameters of aquaculture tanks. In this paper, computational fluid dynamics(CFD)technology is adopted to study the flow field performance of aquaculture tanks with different L/B ratios(L:the length;B:the width,of aquaculture tank)and different jet direction conditions(lengthways jet and widthways jet).A three-dimensional numerical calculation model of turbulence in rounded rectangle aquaculture tanks in dual-diagonal-inlet layout was established.Jet directions are arranged lengthways and widthways, and the water flow velocity, resistance coefficient change, vorticity, etc.are analyzed under two working conditions. Results show that the flow field performance in aquaculture tank decreases with the increase of the L/B ratio. The flow field performed well when L/B was 1.0-1.3,sharply dropped at 1.4-1.6,and poor at 1.7-1.9.The results provided a theoretical basis for the design and optimization in flow field performance of the industrialized circulating aquaculture tanks. 展开更多

A toroidal soft x-ray imaging(T-SXRI)system has been developed to investigate threedimensional(3D)plasma physics on J-TEXT.This T-SXRI system consists of three sets of SXR arrays. Two sets are newly developed and located on the vacuum chamber wall at toroidal positionsφof 126.4°and 272.6°,respectively,while one set was established previously atφ=65.50.Each set of SXR arrays consists of three arrays viewing the plasma poloidally, and hence can be used separately to obtain SXR images via the tomographic method. The sawtooth precursor oscillations are measured by T-SXRI,and the corresponding images of perturbative SXR signals are successfully reconstructed at these three toroidal positions, hence providing measurement of the 3D structure of precursor oscillations. The observed 3D structure is consistent with the helical structure of the m/n=1/1 mode. The experimental observation confirms that the T-SXRI system is able to observe 3D structures in the J-TEXT plasma. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Acetabular component positioning in total hip arthroplasty(THA)is of key importance to ensure satisfactory post-operative outcomes and to minimize the risk of complications. The majority of acetabular components are aligned freehand, without the use of navigation methods.Patient specific instruments(PSI)and three-dimensional(3D)printing of THA placement guides are increasingly used in primary THA to ensure optimal positioning.AIM To summarize the literature on 3D printing in THA and how they improve acetabular component alignment.METHODS PubMed was used to identify and access scientific studies reporting on different 3D printing methods used in THA.Eight studies with 236 hips in 228 patients were included. The studies could be divided into two main categories;3D printed models and 3D printed guides.RESULTS 3D printing in THA helped improve preoperative cup size planning and post-operative Harris hip scores between intervention and control groups(P=0.019,P=0.009).Otherwise,outcome measures were heterogeneous and thus difficult to compare. The overarching consensus between the studies is that the use of 3D guidance tools can assist in improving THA cup positioning and reduce the need for revision THA and the associated costs.CONCLUSION The implementation of 3D printing and PSI for primary THA can significantly improve the positioning accuracy of the acetabular cup component and reduce the number of complications caused by malpositioning. 展开更多

In this study,a common-node DEM-SPH coupling model based on the shared node method is proposed, and a fluid–structure coupling method using the common-node discrete element method-smoothed particle hydrodynamics(DS-SPH)method is developed using LS-DYNA software. The DEM and SPH are established on the same node to create common-node DEM-SPH particles, allowing for fluid–structure interactions.Numerical simulations of various scenarios, including water entry of a rigid sphere,dam-break propagation over wet beds, impact on an ice plate floating on water and ice accumulation on offshore structures, are conducted. The interaction between DS particles and SPH fluid and the crack generation mechanism and expansion characteristics of the ice plate under the interaction of structure and fluid are also studied. The results are compared with available data to verify the proposed coupling method.Notably, the simulation results demonstrated that controlling the cutoff pressure of internal SPH particles could effectively control particle splashing during ice crushing failure. 展开更多

BACKGROUND The management of hepatoblastoma(HB)becomes challenging when the tumor remains in close proximity to the major liver vasculature(PMV)even after a full course of neoadjuvant chemotherapy(NAC).In such cases, extreme liver resection can be considered a potential option.AIM To explore whether computer-assisted three-dimensional individualized extreme liver resection is safe and feasible for children with HB who still have PMV after a full course of NAC.METHODS We retrospectively collected data from children with HB who underwent surgical resection at our center from June 2013 to June 2023.We then analyzed the detailed clinical and three-dimensional characteristics of children with HB who still had PMV after a full course of NAC.RESULTS Sixty-seven children diagnosed with HB underwent surgical resection. The age at diagnosis was 21.4±18.8 months, and 40 boys and 27 girls were included.Fifty-nine(88.1%)patients had a single tumor,39(58.2%)of which was located in the right lobe of the liver.A total of 47 patients(70.1%)had PRE-TEXT III or IV.Thirty-nine patients(58.2%)underwent delayed resection. After a full course of NAC,16 patients still had close PMV(within 1 cm in two patients, touching in 11 patients, compressing in four patients, and showing tumor thrombus in three patients). There were 6 patients of tumors in the middle lobe of the liver, and four of those patients exhibited liver anatomy variations. These 16 children underwent extreme liver resection after comprehensive preoperative evaluation.Intraoperative procedures were performed according to the preoperative plan, and the operations were successfully performed.Currently, the 3-year event-free survival of 67 children with HB is 88%.Among the 16 children who underwent extreme liver resection, three experienced recurrence, and one died due to multiple metastases.CONCLUSION Extreme liver resection for HB that is still in close PMV after a full course of NAC is both safe and feasible. This approach not only reduces the necessity for liver transplantation but also results in a favorable prognosis.Individualized three-dimensional surgical planning is beneficial for accurate and complete resection of HB,particularly for assessing vascular involvement, remnant liver volume and anatomical variations. 展开更多

In recent years, the integration of stochastic techniques, especially those based on artificial neural networks, has emerged as a pivotal advancement in the field of computational fluid dynamics. These techniques offer a powerful framework for the analysis of complex fluid flow phenomena and address the uncertainties inherent in fluid dynamics systems.Following this trend, the current investigation portrays the design and construction of an important technique named swarming optimized neuroheuristic intelligence with the competency of artificial neural networks to analyze nonlinear viscoelastic magneto-hydrodynamic Prandtl-Eyring fluid flow model, with diffusive magnetic layers effect along an extended sheet. The currently designed computational technique is established using inverse multiquadric radial basis activation function through the hybridization of a well-known global searching technique of particle swarm optimization and sequential quadratic programming,a technique capable of rapid convergence locally. The most appropriate scaling group involved transformations that are implemented on governing equations of the suggested fluidic model to convert it from a system of nonlinear partial differential equations into a dimensionless form of a third-order nonlinear ordinary differential equation. The transformed/reduced fluid flow model is solved for sundry variations of physical quantities using the designed scheme and outcomes are matched consistently with Adam's numerical technique with negligible magnitude of absolute errors and mean square errors. Moreover,it is revealed that the velocity of the fluid depreciates in the presence of a strong magnetic field effect. The efficacy of the designed solver is depicted evidently through rigorous statistical observations via exhaustive numerical experimentation of the fluidic problem. 展开更多

Oil transport is greatly affected by heterogeneous pore–throat structures present in shale. It is therefore very important to accurately characterize pore–throat structures.Additionally,it remains unclear how pore–throat structures affect oil transport capacity. In this paper, using finite element(FE)simulation and mathematical modeling,we calculated the hydrodynamic resistance for four pore–throat structure. In addition, the influence of pore throat structure on shale oil permeability is analyzed.According to the results, the hydrodynamic resistance of different pore throat structures can vary by 300%.The contribution of additional resistance caused by streamline bending is also in excess of 40%,even without slip length.Fur-thermore,Pore–throat structures can affect apparent permeability by more than 60%on the REV scale, and this influence increases with heterogeneity of pore size distribution, organic matter content, and organic matter number.Clearly, modeling shale oil flow requires consideration of porous–throat structure and additional resistance, otherwise oil recovery and flow capacity may be overestimated. 展开更多
