In 3D finite element analysis the virtual crack closure technique is applied to calculate distributions and variations of the stress intensity factor along the surface crack front. It is confirmed that the stress intensity factor along the surface crack front varies non-uniformly with crack growth. Crack growth rate is proportional to the stress intensity factor distribution in the 3D cracked specimen. The fatigue crack growth in surface cracked specimens can be described by the Forman model identified in conventional compact tension specimens. For crack growth in the free specimen surface the arc length seems more suitable to quantify crack progress. Geometry and loading configuration of the surface cracked specimen seem to not affect the fatigue crack growth substantially.展开更多

To properly simulate 3D crack propagation, a modified maximum tangential tensile stress criterion is proposed. In this modified criterion, it is supposed that cracks propagate only at crack front in the principal normal plane. The tangential tensile stress at crack front in the principal normal plane in local coordinates is employed to determine crack propagation, which is calculated through coordinate transformation from global to local coordinates. New cracks will propagate when the maximum tangential tensile stress at crack front in the principal normal plane reaches the tensile strength of rock-like materials. Compared with the previous crack propagation criteria, the modified crack propagation criterion is helpful in calculating 3D crack stress intensity factor, and can overcome the limitations of propagation step determined by individual experiences in previous studies. Finally, the 3D crack propagation process is traced by element-free Galerkin method. The numerical results agree well with the experimental ones for a frozen resin sample with prefabricated 3D cracks.展开更多

Several scattering mechanisms, such as the acoustic and optical phonon scattering, the ionized impurity scattering, the impact ionization scattering and the surface roughness scattering are considered in our simulator. The effects of the substrate bias and the surface roughness scattering near the Si/SiO2 interface on the performance of bulk FinFET are mainly discussed in our work. Our results show that the on-current of bulk FinFET is sensitive to the surface roughness and that we can reduce the substrate leakage current by modulating the substrate bias voltage.展开更多

In this study, using a polarization-activated localization scheme based on the orientation-dependent properties of anisotropic plasmonic metal nanoparticles (MNPs), "photoswitchable" imaging of single gold nanorods (AuNRs) was accomplished not only in two dimensions but also in three dimensions. Moreover, the Rayleigh scattering background arising from the congested subcellular structures was efficiently suppressed. Thus, we obtained the 3D distributions of both the position and the orientation of the AuNRs inside the cells and investigated their intemalization kinetics. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of the confocal-like 3D imaging of non-fluorescence nanoparticles with a high resolution and almost zero background. This technique is easy to implement and should greatly facilitate MNP studies and applications in biomedicine and biology.展开更多

文摘The three-dimensional (3D) crack propagation is a hot issue in rock mechanics. 文摘An improved algorithm for computing multiphase flows is presented in which the multimaterial Moment-of-Fluid(MOF)algorithm for multiphase flows, initially described by Li et al.(2015),is enhanced addressing existing MOF difficulties in computing solutions to problems in which surface tension forces are crucial for understanding salient flow mechanisms. The Continuous MOF(CMOF)method is motivated in this article. The CMOF reconstruction method inherently removes the"checkerboard instability"that persists when using the MOF method on surface tension driven multiphase(multimaterial)flows. The CMOF reconstruction algorithm is accelerated by coupling the CMOF method to the level set method and coupling the CMOF method to a decision tree machine learning(ML)algorithm.Multiphase flow examples are shown in the two-dimensional(2D),three-dimensional(3D)axisymmetric"RZ",and 3D coordinate systems.Examples include two material and three material multiphase flows:bubble formation, the impingement of a liquid jet on a gas bubble in a cryogenic fuel tank, freezing, and liquid lens dynamics.
文摘Since each rock joint is unique by nature, the utilization of replicas in direct shear testing is required to carry out experimental parameter studies. However, information about the ability of the replicas to simulate the shear mechanical behavior of the rock joint and their dispersion in direct shear testing is lacking. With the aim to facilitate generation of high-quality direct shear test data from replicas,a novel component in the testing procedure is introduced by presenting two parameters for geometric quality assurance. The parameters are derived from surface comparisons of three-dimensional(3D)scanning data of the rock joint and its replicas. The first parameter, smf, captures morphological deviations between the replica and the rock joint surfaces.smf is derived as the standard deviation of the deviations between the coordinate points of the replica and the rock joint.Four sources of errors introduced in the replica manufacturing process employed in this study could be identified. These errors could be minimized, yielding replicas with smf0.06 mm.The second parameter is a vector,VHp100,which describes deviations with respect to the shear direction. It is the projection of the 100 mm long normal vector of the best-fit plane of the replica joint surface to the corresponding plane of the rock joint.VHp100was found to be less than or equal to 0.36 mm in this study.Application of these two geometric quality assurance parameters demonstrates that it is possible to manufacture replicas with high geometric similarity to the rock joint. In a subsequent paper(part 2),smf and VHp100 are incorporated in a novel quality assurance method,in which the parameters shall be evaluated prior to direct shear testing.Replicas having parameter values below established thresholds shall have a known and narrow dispersion and imitate the shear mechanical behavior of the rock joint.

文摘Three-dimensional(3D)printed re-entrant micropillars have demonstrated high static contact angles for an unprecedented variety of liquids, but have yet to achieve this with low contact angle hysteresis and excellent abrasion resistance. We report on the demonstration of 3D printed microcell/nanoparticle structures that exhibit high static contact angle, low contact angle hysteresis, and high mechanical durability.Micropillars and microcells both exhibit high static contact angles with water and ethylene glycol(EG),but suffer from high contact angle hysteresis, indicative of rose petal wetting. Our modeling results indicate that micropillars are able to achieve higher static contact angle and breakthrough pressure simultaneously compared with microcells. However, simulations also indicate that micropillars have higher maximum equivalent stress at their bases,so that they are more prone to mechanical failure. We address contact angle hysteresis and mechanical durability issues by the creation of 3D printed microcell/nanoparticle arrays that demonstrate super-repellency and retain their super-repellency after 100 cycles of mechanical abrasion with a Scotch-Brite abrasive pad under a pressure of 1.2 kPa.The use of interconnected microcell structures as opposed to micropillars addresses mechanical durability issues.Low contact angle hysteresis is realized by coating 3D printed structures with low surface energy nanoparticles, which lowers the solid–liquid contact area fraction. Our results demonstrate new 3D printed structures with mechanical durability and super-repellency through the use of microcell structures integrated with fluorinated nanoparticles.

文摘Assembling two-dimensional(2D)sheets into macroscopic three-dimensional(3D)forms has created a promising material family with rich functionalities.Multiscale wrinkles are intrinsic features of 2D sheets in their 3D assembles. Therefore, the precise wrinkling modulation optimizes the transition of outstanding properties of 2D sheets to expected performances of assembled materials and dominates their fabrication process. The wrinkling evolution of 2D sheets assembling onto flat surfaces has been extensively understood, however, the wrinkling behaviors on the more generally curved surface still remain unclear. Here,we investigate the wrinkling behaviors of graphene oxide sheets assembled onto curved surfaces and reveal the selection rule of wrinkling modes that determined by the curvature mismatch between 2D sheets and target surfaces. We uncover that three wrinkling modes including isotropic cracked land, labyrinth, and anisotropic curtain phases, respectively emerge on flat, spherical, and cylindrical surfaces.A favorable description paradigm is offered to quantitatively measure the complex wrinkling patterns and assess the curvature mismatch constraint underlying the wrinkling mode selection. This research provides a general and quantitative description framework of wrinkling modulation of 2D materials such as high performance graphene fibers, and guides the precise fabrication of particles and functional coatings.

文摘Three-dimensional (3D) profile measurement is an indispensable process for assisting the manufacture of various optic, especially aspheric surfaces. This work presents the measurement error calibration of a 3D profile measurement system, namely PMI700. Measurement errors induced by measuring tool radius, alignment error and the temperature variation were analyzed through geometry analysis and simulation. A quantitative method for the compensation of tool radius and an alignment error compensation model based on the least square method were proposed to reduce the measurement error. To verify the feasibility of PMI700, a plane and a non-uniform hyperboloidal mirror were measured by PMI700 and interferometer, respectively. The data provided by two systems were high coincident. The direct subtractions of results from two systems indicate RMS deviations for both segments were less than 0.22.

文摘There is an increasing demand for advanced optical imaging techniques that can detect and resolve nanosize objects at a spatial resolution below the optical diffraction limit, especially in three-dimensional (3D) cellular environments. This technique is easy to implement and should greatly facilitate MNP studies and applications in biomedicine and biology.
