Morphology of hydraulic fracture surface has significant effects on oil and gas flow, proppant migration and fracture closure, which plays an important role in oil and gas fracturing stimulation. In this paper,we analyzed the fracture surface characteristics induced by supercritical carbon dioxide(SC-CO_(2))and water in open-hole and perforation completion conditions under triaxial stresses.A simple calculation method was proposed to quantitatively analyze the fracture surface area and roughness in macro-level based on three-dimensional(3D)scanning data.In micro-level,scanning electron micrograph(SEM)was used to analyze the features of fracture surface. The results showed that the surface area of the induced fracture increases with perforation angle for both SC-CO_(2)and water fracturing, and the surface area of SC-CO_(2)-induced fracture is 6.49%e58.57%larger than that of water-induced fracture. The fractal dimension and surface roughness of water-induced fractures increase with the increase in perforation angle, while those of SC-CO_(2)-induced fractures decrease with the increasing perforation angle.A considerable number of microcracks and particle peeling pits can be observed on SC-CO_(2)-induced fracture surface while there are more flat particle surfaces in water-induced fracture surface through SEM images, indicating that fractures tend to propagate along the boundary of the particle for SC-CO_(2)fracturing while water-induced fractures prefer to cut through particles. These findings are of great significance for analyzing fracture mechanism and evaluating fracturing stimulation performance. 展开更多

In the present work the fatigue crack growth in AISI304 specimens is investigated experimentally. In 3D finite element analysis the virtual crack closure technique is applied to calculate distributions and variations of the stress intensity factor along the surface crack front. It is confirmed that the stress intensity factor along the surface crack front varies non-uniformly with crack growth. Crack growth rate is proportional to the stress intensity factor distribution in the 3D cracked specimen. The fatigue crack growth in surface cracked specimens can be described by the Forman model identified in conventional compact tension specimens. For crack growth in the free specimen surface the arc length seems more suitable to quantify crack progress. Geometry and loading configuration of the surface cracked specimen seem to not affect the fatigue crack growth substantially. 展开更多

A new physical structure of vortical flow, i.e., tubular limiting stream surface(TLSS), is reported. It is defined as a general mathematical structure for the physical flow field in the neighborhood of a singularity, and has a close relationship with limit cycles. The TLSS is a tornado-like structure, which separates a vortex into two regions, i.e., the inner region near the vortex axis and the outer region further away from the vortex axis. The flow particles in these two regions can approach to(or leave) the TLSS, but never could reach it. 展开更多

A technique for modelling of three-dimensional(3D)quasi-statically propagating cracks in elastic bodies by the displacement discontinuity method(DDM)was described. When the crack is closed, the Mohr-coulomb rule on the two contacted surfaces of the crack must be satisfied.A simple iterative method was adopted in order to consider three different states of cracks.Under the assumption that the advance of the point on the crack front would occur only in the normal plane which is through this edge point, the maximum energy release rate criterion is modified to be used as the criterion for the crack growth. With discretization, the process of crack propagation can be seen as the advance of the vertices of the crack front. The program MCP3D was developed based on these theories to simulate the 3D quasi-static crack propagation.A numerical example of a penny-shaped crack subject to tension and compression in an infinite elastic media was analyzed with MCP3D,and the results in comparison with others' show that the present method for 3D crack propagation is effective. 展开更多

To properly simulate 3D crack propagation, a modified maximum tangential tensile stress criterion is proposed. In this modified criterion, it is supposed that cracks propagate only at crack front in the principal normal plane. The tangential tensile stress at crack front in the principal normal plane in local coordinates is employed to determine crack propagation, which is calculated through coordinate transformation from global to local coordinates. New cracks will propagate when the maximum tangential tensile stress at crack front in the principal normal plane reaches the tensile strength of rock-like materials. Compared with the previous crack propagation criteria, the modified crack propagation criterion is helpful in calculating 3D crack stress intensity factor, and can overcome the limitations of propagation step determined by individual experiences in previous studies. Finally, the 3D crack propagation process is traced by element-free Galerkin method. The numerical results agree well with the experimental ones for a frozen resin sample with prefabricated 3D cracks. 展开更多

The Dunhuang–Golmud railway passes through different deserts in arid areas, especially drifting-sand desert and sandy-gravel Gobi. The near-surface wind environment and wind-sand transport process vary due to different external factors, such as topography, vegetation, and regional climate, resulting in evident spatial differences in surface erosion and deposition.Consequently, the measures for preventing wind-sand hazards will differ. However, the mechanism and control theory of sand damage remain poorly understood. In this study,we used meteorological observation,three-dimensional(3D)laser scanning, and grain-size analysis to compare and evaluate the spatial distribution of wind conditions, sand erosion and deposition patterns, and grain composition in the drifting-sand desert and sandy-gravel Gobi along the Dunhuang–Golmud railway in China. Results show that the annual mean wind speed, the frequency of sand-driving wind, and the drift potential of sandy-gravel Gobi are higher than those of drifting-sand desert, indicating a greater wind strength in the sandy-gravel Gobi, which exhibits spatial heterogeneity in wind conditions. The major sediment components in sandy-gravel Gobi are very fine sand, fine sand, and medium sand, and that in drifting-sand desert are very fine sand and fine sand.We found that the sediment in the sandy-gravel Gobi is coarser than that in the drifting-sand desert based on mean grain size and sediment component. The spatial distributions of sand erosion and deposition in the sandy-gravel Gobi and drifting-sand desert are consistent, with sand deposition mainly on the west side of the railway and sand erosion on the east side of the railway. The area of sand deposition in the drifting-sand desert accounts for 75.83%of the total area, with a mean deposition thickness of 0.032 m;while the area of sand deposition in the sandy-gravel Gobi accounts for 65.31%of the total area, with a mean deposition thickness of 0.028 m,indicating greater deposition amounts in the drifting-sand desert due to the presence of more fine sediment components. However, the sand deposition is more concentrated with a greater thickness on the embankment and track in the sandy-gravel Gobi and is dispersed with a uniform thickness in the drifting-sand desert. The sand deposition on the track of the sandy-gravel Gobi mainly comes from the east side of the railway. The results of this study are helpful in developing the preventive measures and determining appropriate selection and layout measures for sand control. 展开更多

In this paper, we investigate the performance of the bulk fin field effect transistor (FinFET) through a three- dimensional (3D) full band Monte Carlo simulator with quantum correction. Several scattering mechanisms, such as the acoustic and optical phonon scattering, the ionized impurity scattering, the impact ionization scattering and the surface roughness scattering are considered in our simulator. The effects of the substrate bias and the surface roughness scattering near the Si/SiO2 interface on the performance of bulk FinFET are mainly discussed in our work. Our results show that the on-current of bulk FinFET is sensitive to the surface roughness and that we can reduce the substrate leakage current by modulating the substrate bias voltage. 展开更多

Soil-rock mixture (SRM) is a unique type of geomaterial characterized by a heterogeneous composition and a complicated structure. It is intractable for the continuum-based soil and rock mechanics theories to accurately characterize and predict the SRM's mechanical properties. This study reports a novel numerical method incorporating microfocus computed tomography and PFC3D codes to probe the deformation and failure processes of SRM. The three-dimensional (3D) PFC models that represent the SRM's complex structures were built. By simulating the entire failure process in PFC3D, the SRM's strength, elastic modulus and crack growth were obtained. The influence of rock ratios on the SRM's strength, deformation and failure processes, as well as its internal mesoscale mechanism, were analyzed. By comparing simulation results with experimental data, it was verified that the 3D PFC models were in good agreement with SRM's real structure and the SRM's compression process, deformation and failure patterns; its intrinsic mesomechanism can be effectively analyzed based on such 3D PFC models. 展开更多

The main feature, i.e. path- independence, makes it one of the foremost fracture parameters. In order to remain the path- independence for fluid-driven cracks, J-integral is revised. In this paper, we present an extended J-in- tegral explicitly for fluid-driven cracks, e.g. hydraulically induced fractures in petroleum reservoirs, for three-dimensional (3D) problems. Particularly, point-wise 3D extended J-integral is proposed to char- acterize the state of a point along crack front. Besides, applications of the extended J-integral to porous media and thermally induced stress conditions are explored. Numerical results show that the extended J- integral is indeed path-independent, and they are in good agreement with those of equivalent domain integral under linear elastic and elastoplastic conditions. In addition, two distance-independent circular integrals in the K-dominance zone are established, which can be used to calculate the stress intensity factor (SIF). 展开更多

This paper describes the development of an intelligent automated control system of a robot manipulator for plasma treatment of medical implants with complex shapes. The two-layer coatings from the Ti wire and hydroxyapatite powders are applied on the surface of Ti medical implants by microplasma spraying to increase the biocompatibility of implants. The coating process requires precise control of a number of parameters, particularly the plasma spray distance and plasma jet traverse velocity. Thus, the development of the robotic plasma surface treatment involves automated path planning. The key idea of the proposed intelligent automatic control system is the use of data of preliminary three-dimensional (3D) scanning of the processed implant by the robot manipulator. The segmentation algorithm of the point cloud from laser scanning of the surface is developed. This methodology is suitable for robotic 3D scanning systems with both non-contact laser distance sensors and video cameras, used in additive manufacturing and medicine. 展开更多

An improved algorithm for computing multiphase flows is presented in which the multimaterial Moment-of-Fluid(MOF)algorithm for multiphase flows, initially described by Li et al.(2015),is enhanced addressing existing MOF difficulties in computing solutions to problems in which surface tension forces are crucial for understanding salient flow mechanisms. The Continuous MOF(CMOF)method is motivated in this article. The CMOF reconstruction method inherently removes the"checkerboard instability"that persists when using the MOF method on surface tension driven multiphase(multimaterial)flows. The CMOF reconstruction algorithm is accelerated by coupling the CMOF method to the level set method and coupling the CMOF method to a decision tree machine learning(ML)algorithm.Multiphase flow examples are shown in the two-dimensional(2D),three-dimensional(3D)axisymmetric"RZ",and 3D coordinate systems.Examples include two material and three material multiphase flows:bubble formation, the impingement of a liquid jet on a gas bubble in a cryogenic fuel tank, freezing, and liquid lens dynamics. 展开更多

Since each rock joint is unique by nature, the utilization of replicas in direct shear testing is required to carry out experimental parameter studies. However, information about the ability of the replicas to simulate the shear mechanical behavior of the rock joint and their dispersion in direct shear testing is lacking. With the aim to facilitate generation of high-quality direct shear test data from replicas,a novel component in the testing procedure is introduced by presenting two parameters for geometric quality assurance. The parameters are derived from surface comparisons of three-dimensional(3D)scanning data of the rock joint and its replicas. The first parameter, smf, captures morphological deviations between the replica and the rock joint surfaces.smf is derived as the standard deviation of the deviations between the coordinate points of the replica and the rock joint.Four sources of errors introduced in the replica manufacturing process employed in this study could be identified. These errors could be minimized, yielding replicas with smf0.06 mm.The second parameter is a vector,VHp100,which describes deviations with respect to the shear direction. It is the projection of the 100 mm long normal vector of the best-fit plane of the replica joint surface to the corresponding plane of the rock joint.VHp100was found to be less than or equal to 0.36 mm in this study.Application of these two geometric quality assurance parameters demonstrates that it is possible to manufacture replicas with high geometric similarity to the rock joint. In a subsequent paper(part 2),smf and VHp100 are incorporated in a novel quality assurance method,in which the parameters shall be evaluated prior to direct shear testing.Replicas having parameter values below established thresholds shall have a known and narrow dispersion and imitate the shear mechanical behavior of the rock joint. 展开更多

Three-dimensional(3D)printed re-entrant micropillars have demonstrated high static contact angles for an unprecedented variety of liquids, but have yet to achieve this with low contact angle hysteresis and excellent abrasion resistance. We report on the demonstration of 3D printed microcell/nanoparticle structures that exhibit high static contact angle, low contact angle hysteresis, and high mechanical durability.Micropillars and microcells both exhibit high static contact angles with water and ethylene glycol(EG),but suffer from high contact angle hysteresis, indicative of rose petal wetting. Our modeling results indicate that micropillars are able to achieve higher static contact angle and breakthrough pressure simultaneously compared with microcells. However, simulations also indicate that micropillars have higher maximum equivalent stress at their bases,so that they are more prone to mechanical failure. We address contact angle hysteresis and mechanical durability issues by the creation of 3D printed microcell/nanoparticle arrays that demonstrate super-repellency and retain their super-repellency after 100 cycles of mechanical abrasion with a Scotch-Brite abrasive pad under a pressure of 1.2 kPa.The use of interconnected microcell structures as opposed to micropillars addresses mechanical durability issues.Low contact angle hysteresis is realized by coating 3D printed structures with low surface energy nanoparticles, which lowers the solid–liquid contact area fraction. Our results demonstrate new 3D printed structures with mechanical durability and super-repellency through the use of microcell structures integrated with fluorinated nanoparticles. 展开更多

Assembling two-dimensional(2D)sheets into macroscopic three-dimensional(3D)forms has created a promising material family with rich functionalities.Multiscale wrinkles are intrinsic features of 2D sheets in their 3D assembles. Therefore, the precise wrinkling modulation optimizes the transition of outstanding properties of 2D sheets to expected performances of assembled materials and dominates their fabrication process. The wrinkling evolution of 2D sheets assembling onto flat surfaces has been extensively understood, however, the wrinkling behaviors on the more generally curved surface still remain unclear. Here,we investigate the wrinkling behaviors of graphene oxide sheets assembled onto curved surfaces and reveal the selection rule of wrinkling modes that determined by the curvature mismatch between 2D sheets and target surfaces. We uncover that three wrinkling modes including isotropic cracked land, labyrinth, and anisotropic curtain phases, respectively emerge on flat, spherical, and cylindrical surfaces.A favorable description paradigm is offered to quantitatively measure the complex wrinkling patterns and assess the curvature mismatch constraint underlying the wrinkling mode selection. This research provides a general and quantitative description framework of wrinkling modulation of 2D materials such as high performance graphene fibers, and guides the precise fabrication of particles and functional coatings. 展开更多

Three-dimensional (3D) profile measurement is an indispensable process for assisting the manufacture of various optic, especially aspheric surfaces. This work presents the measurement error calibration of a 3D profile measurement system, namely PMI700. Measurement errors induced by measuring tool radius, alignment error and the temperature variation were analyzed through geometry analysis and simulation. A quantitative method for the compensation of tool radius and an alignment error compensation model based on the least square method were proposed to reduce the measurement error. To verify the feasibility of PMI700, a plane and a non-uniform hyperboloidal mirror were measured by PMI700 and interferometer, respectively. The data provided by two systems were high coincident. There is an increasing demand for advanced optical imaging techniques that can detect and resolve nanosize objects at a spatial resolution below the optical diffraction limit, especially in three-dimensional (3D) cellular environments. In this study, using a polarization-activated localization scheme based on the orientation-dependent properties of anisotropic plasmonic metal nanoparticles (MNPs), "photoswitchable" imaging of single gold nanorods (AuNRs) was accomplished not only in two dimensions but also in three dimensions. Moreover, the Rayleigh scattering background arising from the congested subcellular structures was efficiently suppressed. Thus, we obtained the 3D distributions of both the position and the orientation of the AuNRs inside the cells and investigated their intemalization kinetics. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of the confocal-like 3D imaging of non-fluorescence nanoparticles with a high resolution and almost zero background. This technique is easy to implement and should greatly facilitate MNP studies and applications in biomedicine and biology. 展开更多
