The numerical model is used as a forward model. After the along-track T/P data are processed, two classical methods, i.e. harmonic and response analysis, are implemented to estimate the tide from such datasets with a domain covering the model area extending from 0° to 41°N in latitude and from 99°E to 142°E in longitude. And the results of these two methods are compared and interpreted. The numerical simulation is performed for 16 major constituents. In the data assimilation experiments, three types of unknown parameters (water depth, bottom friction and tidal open boundary conditions in the model equations) are chosen as control variables. Among the various types of data assimilation experiments, the calibration of water depth brings the most promising results. By comparing the results with selected tide gauge data, the average absolute errors are decreased from 7.9 cm to 6.8 cm for amplitude and from 13.0° to 9.0° for phase with respect to the semidiurnal tide M2 constituent, which is the largest tidal constituent in the model area. After the data assimilation experiment is performed, the comparison between model results and tide gauge observation for water levels shows that the RMS errors decrease by 9 cm for a total of 14 stations, mostly selected along the coast of China's Mainland, when a one-month period is considered, and the correlation coefficients improve for most tidal stations among these stations.展开更多

Then by solving the integral constraint condition, and using a limit procedure, a new approach method is proposed and the existence of the solution was proved for the BSDEs if the diffusion coefficients satisfy the locally Lipschitz condition. In the special case the solution was a Brownian bridge. The uniqueness is also considered in the meaning of "F0-integrable equivalent class" . Two variational algorithms are used. One is the conjugate code method-direct approach, and another is the numerical backward integration of analytical adjoint equation—indirect approach. Theoretical derivation and sensitivity tests are conducted in order to verify the consistency and inconsistency of the two algorithms under the semi-Lagrangian framework. On the other hand, the sensitivity of the perfect and imperfect initial condition is also tested in both direct and indirect approaches. Our research has shown that the two algorithms are not only identical in theory, but also identical in numerical calculation. Furthermore, the algorithms of the indirect approach are much more feasible and efficient than that of the direct one when both are employed in the semi-Lagrangian framework. Taking advantage of semi-Lagrangian framework, one purpose of this paper is to illustrate when the variational assimilation algorithm is concerned in the computational method of the backward integration, the algorithm is extremely facilitated. Such simplicity in indirect approach should be meaningful for the VAR design in passive model. Indeed, if one can successfully split the diabatic and adiabatic process, the algorithms represented in this paper might be easily used in a more general vision of atmospheric model.展开更多

An effective removal of spatial variation is needed to ensure unbiased estimation or prediction and thus increase the accuracy of field data evaluation. A moving grid adjustment (MGA) method, which was proposed by Technow, was evaluated through Monte Carlo simulation for its statistical properties regarding field spatial variation control. Our simulation results showed that the MGA method can effectively account for field spatial variation if it does exist;however, this method will not change phenotype results if field spatial variation does not exist. The MGA method was applied to a large-scale cotton field trial data set with two representative agronomic traits: lint yield (strong field spatial pattern) and lint percentage (no field spatial pattern). The results suggested that the MGA method was able to effectively separate the spatial variation including blocking effects from random error variation for lint yield while the adjusted data remained almost identical to the original phenotypic data. With application of the MGA method, the estimated variance for residuals was significantly reduced (62.2% decrease) for lint yield while more genetic variation (29.7% increase) was detected compared to the original data analysis subject to the conventional randomized complete block design analysis. On the other hand, the results were almost identical for lint percentage with and without the application of the MGA method. Therefore, the MGA method can be a useful addition to enhance data analysis when field spatial pattern exists.展开更多
