Clinical and experimental studies have revealed the main pathological changes of injured spinal cord implicated in all these signs and symptoms, including neuropathic pain. After few hours of traumatic SCI, it is usual to observe broken blood brain barrier with plasma and blood cells extravasation, cell necrosis, disruption of ascending and descending spinal cord pathways and increased potassium and glutamate. Glutamate contributes to excitotoxicity of neurons whereas potassium facilitates ectopic depolarization of survival neurons and activation of resident microglia.展开更多

Currently, there are no treatments available to improve outcome follow- ing SCI, leaving individuals with permanent and lifelong physical disability. Worldwide it is estimated that more than 500,000 people sustain a SCI each year, with average lifetime cost of paraplegia and quadriplegia estimated at $5 million and $9.5 million respectively. We therefore urgently need effective therapies to improve quality of life following SCI, and this requires a greater understanding of how cell and axonal injury develops after the traumatic event.展开更多

For decades, its phar- macological action was believed to act on inhibition of gam- ma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) transaminase, in turn, increas- ing GABA in inhibitory synapses. However, in recent years, VPA has been investigated on other therapeutic actions. Those investigations demonstrate that VPA shows neuroprotective ef- fects by promoting neurogenesis, neuronal differentiation, and neuroregeneration (Foti et al., 2013).展开更多

Remyelination is the natural endogenous repair mechanism of demyelinated axons and it is supposed to protect axons/neurons from degeneration and thus the patient from progressive disability (Franklin and Ffrench-Constant, 2008). Current therapeutics for patients with multiple sclerosis are to some extent very effective in inhibiting neuroinflamma- tion and demyelination. However, to date there are no substanc- es available that can enhance remyelination. Remyelination is the result of recruitment/proliferation of new oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPC) and differentiation into mature myelin producing oligodendrocytes (Franklin and Ffrench-Constant, 2008). These processes are supported by many factors and signals and failure at any stage might lead to repair failure. Strategies to enhance myelin repair are either the promotion of endogenous repair mechanisms via modulation of OPC prolif- eration and oligodendrocyte differentiation or the transplantion of myelinating cells into lesions. Due to the multiloculated pro- cess in multiple sclerosis and the ethical problems with the cell source, the latter is less favoured. The endogenous promotion of remvelination could be achieved by several approaches such as:展开更多

Although peripheral nerves retain a good regeneration potential, the clinical outcome after nerve lesion is far from being satisfactory and functional recovery is almost never complete, especially in the case of large nerve defects, that result in loss or diminished sensitivity and/or motor activity of the innervated target organs. Therefore, to improve the outcome after nerve damage, or in peripheral neuropathies, there is a need for further research in nerve repair and regeneration to identify factors that promote axonal regrowth, remvelination and target reinnervation.展开更多

Nevertheless, the reality of "hot economic relations vs. cold political relations" between the two countries puzzles people who show deep concern for Sino-Japanese relations: Are the inherent features of Sino-Japanese relations the cause of the phenomenon? Is the gap between aspiration and action the cause of it? Or both are the causes? The answer is there, but exploration needs to be made. In October 2003, the Export Forum of Contemporary Internation- al Relations held a discussion on "the Future of Sino-Japanese Relations. " On June 5, 2004, the forum further sponsored a symposium, inviting four members of the 21st Century Committee for Sino-Japanese Friendship to have a discussion on "Suggestions to Promote Sino-Japanese Relations" in Wanshou Housing Estate. Based on the current situation of Sino- Japanese relations and on "pulse-feeling" and "group consultation," the four members of the 21st Century Committee for Sino-Japanese Friendship in Beijing tried to write out a "prescription" for the development of Sino-Japanese relations. Though the speeches of the four members vary in length and even differ in views, we sincerely hope the discussion could attract your high attention to Sino-Japanese relations so as to make joint effort to bring Sino-Japanese relations to step onto the right track for healthy development.展开更多
