Purpose – This study aims to reduce the redundant weight of the anti-roll torsion bar brought by thetraditional empirical design and improving its strength and stiffness.Design/methodology/approach – Based on the finite element approach coupled with the improved belugawhale optimization (IBWO) algorithm, a collaborative optimization method is suggested to optimize the designof the anti-roll torsion bar structure and weight. The dimensions and material properties of the torsion bar weredefined as random variables, and the torsion bar’s mass and strength were investigated using finite elements. Then, chaotic mapping and differential evolution (DE) operators are introduced to improve the beluga whaleoptimization (BWO) algorithm and run case studies.Findings – The findings demonstrate that the IBWO has superior solution set distribution uniformity, convergence speed, solution correctness and stability than the BWO. The IBWO algorithm is used to optimizethe anti-roll torsion bar design. The error between the optimization and finite element simulation results wasless than 1%. The weight of the optimized anti-roll torsion bar was lessened by 4%, the maximum stress wasreduced by 35% and the stiffness was increased by 1.9%.Originality/value – The study provides a methodological reference for the simulation optimization process ofthe lateral anti-roll torsion bar. 展开更多

Although various types of anti-roll torsion bars have been developed to inhibit excessive roll angle of the electric multiple unit(EMU)car body,it is critical to ensure the reliability of structural design due to the complexity of the problems involving time and uncertainties. To address this issue,amulti-objective fuzzy design optimization model is constructed considering time-variant stiffness and strength reliability constraints for the anti-roll torsion bar.A hybrid optimization strategy combining the design of experiment(DoE)sampling and non-linear programming by quadratic lagrangian(NLPQL)is presented to deal with the design optimization model. To characterize the effect of time on the structural performance of the torsion bar,the continuous-time model combined with Ito lemma is proposed to establish the time-variant stiffness and strength reliability constraints.Fuzzy mathematics is employed to conduct uncertainty quantification for the design parameters of the torsion bar.A physical programming approach is used to improve the designer’s preference and to make the optimization results more consistent with engineering practices. Moreover, the effectiveness of the proposed method has been validated by comparing with current methods in a practical engineering case. 展开更多

Large strain fixed-end torsion of circular solid rubber bars is studied semi-analytically. The analyses are based on various non-Gaussian network models for rubber elasticity, some of which were proposed very recently. Results are presented in terms of predicted torque vs. twist curves and axial force vs. twist curves. In some cases, the predicted stress distributions are also given. The sensitivity of the second-order axial force to the employed models is considered. The predicted results are compared with experimental results found in the literature. 展开更多

We aimed to describe a method for repositioning of right middle lobar torsion by using a 3-cm uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery(VATS) approach. Middle lobe torsion occurred after right upper and lower lobectomy in a 74-year-old man. Immediate re-exploratory thoracotomy using the 3-cm uniportal VATS approach was performed. The torsion was corrected, and the lobe was anchored to the anterior chest wall with Prolene stitches. The patient recovered well postoperatively with daily improvements in chest radiographic findings. Follow-up examination was performed using fiberbronchoscopy, which revealed an unobstructed right middle lobe bronchus and sticky yellow sputum. Follow-up chest computed tomography was performed 3 months after the primary surgery and revealed increased expansion of the right middle lobe. We repositioned the right middle lobe successfully by using the 3-cm uniportal VATS approach, but more cases are needed to confirm the feasibility of the approach. Lobectomy remains the primary treatment option for such cases. 展开更多

This paper investigates the torsion analysis of coated bars with a rectangular cross-section. Two opposite faces of a bar are coated by two isotropie layers with different materials of the original substrate that are perfectly bonded to the bar. With the Saint- Venant torsion theory, the governing equation of the problem in terms of the warping function is established and solved using the finite Fourier cosine transform. The state of stress on the cross-section, warping of the cross-section, and torsional rigidity of the bar are evaluated. Effects of thickness of the coating layers and material properties on these quantities are investigated. A set of graphs are provided that can be used to determine the coating thicknesses and material properties so as to keep the maximum von Mises stress on the cross-section below an allowable value for effective use of the coating layer. 展开更多

These elements are eight-pointisoparametric element, quarter eight-Point isoparametric element and eight-pointisoparametric transition element. Among these elements, the second and the thirdelements possess the singularity of order r-1/2 at crack tip. Using these elements, wehave completed the calculations of St. Venant's torsion for a cylinder with a radialvertical crack. The calculated results show that the isoparametric elements given bythis paper have ideal accuracy. good convergence. high speed of convergence, lowfreedom and little computational time, and so they can be widely applied to practice. 展开更多

Intervertebral disc flexibility is influenced by lifestyle, loading history, trauma, preexisting conditions, age and degeneration. With regard to degeneration, intervertebral discs become less flexible and stiffer. In this study, a testing protocol using bending and torsion loading was developed to gain the flexibility curves and stiffness often cadaveric lumbar discs. Measurements of rotation in the sagittal plane (flexion-extension), coronal plane (right-lefl lateral bending) and transverse plane (torsion) due to a 5 N-m load are reported. Results show that overall normal discs are more flexible and behave in a nonlinear fashion. The testing results were used in a develop t'mite element model of an intervertebral disc to investigate the stresses and strains in the disc components: annulus fibrosus and nucleus pulposus with regard to degeneration. Simulation of bending and torsion loadings show large strains in the annulus and nucleus from a normal disc, in contrast higher stresses develop in the annulus from a degenerated disc. The proposed methodology is novel, versatile, functional and economic with implications in bioengineering, medical sciences and the clinical field. 展开更多

Hot torsion tests for AZ80 magnesium alloy were carried out in the temperature range of 380℃-260℃,with a constant decreasing temperature rate of 10℃/s in order to weaken the basal texture and refine the grains. The results indicated that the average grain sizes were refined forming gradient structure with increasing specimen radial position from center(12.2-5.4μm),and that the initial basal texture intensity of the extruded magnesium alloy was weakened from 46.2 to 8.3.Furthermore,the extension twins(ETs)could be disintegrated from the twins forming separated twins with smaller sizes.Interestingly,ETs with the same twin variant intersecting with each other could be coalesced forming grains with similar orientation, while ETs with different twin variants were separated by twins boundaries contributing to grain refinement. Moreover,in addition to the conventional continuous dynamic recrystallized(CDRX)grains with 30˚orientation rotated around C-axis of the parent grains,CDRXed grains with 30˚rotation around a-axis and random rotation axis were also discerned.Besides, the CDRX evolution induced twins were also elaborated, exhibiting the complex competition between CDRX and twining.Hot torsion deformation with constant decreasing temperatures rate is an effective way of grain refinement and texture modification. 展开更多

Hot torsion tests were performed on the Al-7Mg alloy at the temperature ranging from 300 to 500℃ and strain rates between 0.05 and 5 s^(-1) to explore the progressive dynamic recrystallization(DRX)and texture behaviors. The DRX behavior of the alloy manifested two distinct stages:Stage 1 at strain of≤2 and Stage 2 at strains of≥2.In Stage 1,there was a slight increase in the DRXed grain fraction(X_(DRX))with predominance of discontinuous DRX(DDRX),followed by a modest change in X_(DRX) until the transition to Stage 2.Stage 2 was marked by an accelerated rate of DRX,culminating in a substantial final X_(DRX) of~0.9.Electron backscattered diffraction(EBSD)analysis on a sample in Stage 2 revealed that continuous DRX(CDRX)predominantly occurred within the(121)[001]grains,whereas the(111)[110]grains underwent a geometric DRX(GDRX)evolution without a noticeable sub-grain structure.Furthermore,a modified Avrami’s DRX kinetics model was utilized to predict the microstructural refinement in the Al-7Mg alloy during the DRX evolution.Although this kinetics model did not accurately capture the DDRX behavior in Stage 1,it effectively simulated the DRX rate in Stage 2.The texture index was employed to assess the evolution of the texture isotropy during hot-torsion test, demonstrating significant improvement(>75%)in texture randomness before the commencement of Stage 2.This initial texture evolution is attributed to the rotation of parent grains and the substructure evolution, rather than to an increase in X_(DRX). 展开更多

To improve the comprehensive mechanical properties of Al-Si-Cu alloy,it was treated by a high-pressure torsion process, and the effect of the deformation degree on the microstructure and properties of the Al-Si-Cu alloy was studied. The results show that the reinforcements(β-Si andθ-CuAl_(2)phases)of the Al-Si-Cu alloy are dispersed in theα-Al matrix phase with finer phase size after the treatment. The processed samples exhibit grain sizes in the submicron or even nanometer range, which effectively improves the mechanical properties of the material. The hardness and strength of the deformed alloy are both significantly raised to 268 HV and 390.04 MPa by 10 turns HPT process, and the fracture morphology shows that the material gradually transits from brittle to plastic before and after deformation. The elements interdiffusion at the interface between the phases has also been effectively enhanced. In addition,it is found that the severe plastic deformation at room temperature induces a ternary eutectic reaction, resulting in the formation of ternary Al+Si+CuAl_(2)eutectic. 展开更多

Bone is a multi-phase,non-homogeneous material that exhibits strain rate sensitivity, and it may fail under compression, tension, torsion,or a combination of these loading. The mechanical properties of cortical bone with strain rate effect under compression and tension have been obtained through the application of the split Hopkinson pressure/tension bar technique, but no such studies have been reported for determining the strain rate behavior properties of bony materials under torsion. In this study, the shear stress-strain curves with the rate-dependent cortical bone subjected to dynamic torsional loading were first obtained using a torsional split Hopkinson bar system.Based on the experiments,an improved mathematical model consisting of elastic, viscoelastic, and viscoplastic components was used to identify the material parameters of the cortical bone.Detailed material properties are derived through constitutive relations. The results may assist researchers in developing more accurate models of cortical bone behavior under different load conditions. 展开更多

High-static-low-dynamic stiffness (HSLDS) vibration isolators have been demonstrated to be an effective means of attenuating low-frequency vibrations, and may be utilized for ship shafting applications to mitigate torsional vibration. This paper presents the construction of a highly compact HSLDS torsional vibration isolator by connecting positive and negative stiffness components in paral lel. Based on mechanical model analysis, the restoring torque of negative stiffness components is de rived from their springs and connecting rods, while that of positive stiffness components is obtained through their circular section flexible rods. The quasizero stiffness characteristics of the HSLDS iso lator are achieved through a combination of static structural simulation and experimental test. The tor sional vibration isolation performance is assessed by means of numerical simulation and theory analy sis. Finally, the frequency-sweep vibration test is conducted. The test results indicate that the HSLDS torsional vibration isolator exhibits superior low-frequency isolation performance compared to its linear counterpart, rendering it a promising solution for mitigating low-frequency torsional vi bration in ship shafting. 展开更多

Previous studies on the hollow cylinder torsional shear test(HCTST)have mainly focused on the macroscopic behavior, while the micromechanical responses in soil specimens with shaped particles have rarely been investigated. This paper develops a numerical model of the HCTST using the discrete element method(DEM).The method of bonded spheres in a hexagonal arrangement is proposed to generate flexible boundaries that can achieve real-time adjustment of the internal and external cell pressures and capture the inhomogeneous deformation in the radial direction during shearing.Representative angular particles are selected from Toyoura sand and reproduced in this model to approximate real sand particles. The model is then validated by comparing numerical and experimental results of HCTSTs on Toyoura sand with different major principal stress directions.Next,a series of HCTSTs with different combinations of major principal stress direction(a)and intermediate principal stress ratio(b)is simulated to quantitatively characterize the sand behavior under different shear conditions. The results show that the shaped particles are horizontally distributed before shearing, and the initial anisotropic packing structure further results in different stressestrain curves in cases with different a and b values. The distribution of force chains is affected by both a and b during the shear process, together with the formation of the shear bands in different patterns. The contact normal anisotropy and contact force anisotropy show different evolution patterns when either a or b varies, resulting in the differences in the non-coaxiality and other macroscopic responses. This study improves the understanding of the macroscopic response of sand from a microscopic perspective and provides valuable insights for the constitutive modeling of sand. 展开更多
