Emerging connected vehicle (CV) data sets have recently become commercially available, enabling analysts to develop a variety of powerful performance measures without deploying any field infrastructure. This paper presents several tools using CV data to evaluate traffic progression quality along a signalized corridor. These include both performance measures for high-level analysis as well as visualizations to examine details of the coordinated operation. With the use of CV data, it is possible to assess not only the movement of traffic on the corridor but also to consider its origin-destination (O-D) path through the corridor. Results for the real-world operation of an eight-intersection signalized arterial are presented. A series of high-level performance measures are used to evaluate overall performance by time of day, with differing results by metric. Next, the details of the operation are examined with the use of two visualization tools: a cyclic time-space diagram (TSD) and an empirical platoon progression diagram (PPD). Comparing flow visualizations developed with different included O-D paths reveals several features, such as the presence of secondary and tertiary platoons on certain sections that cannot be seen when only end-to-end journeys are included. In addition, speed heat maps are generated, providing both speed performance along the corridor and locations and the extent of the queue. The proposed visualization tools portray the corridor’s performance holistically instead of combining individual signal performance metrics. The techniques exhibited in this study are compelling for identifying locations where engineering solutions such as access management or timing plan change are required. The recent progress in infrastructure-free sensing technology has significantly increased the scope of CV data-based traffic management systems, enhancing the significance of this study. The study demonstrates the utility of CV trajectory data for obtaining high-level details of the corridor performance as well as drilling down into the minute specifics. 展开更多

In recent years, with the increasingly serious traffic problems in large cities of China, transformation to polycentric urban spatial structure has been considered as an important initiative to improve the urban traffic performance. This study examines the traffic performance of the polycentric spatial structure of Harbin, and analyzes the factors influencing the traffic performance of the structure using the location reselection hypothesis theory. The results show that the polycentric spatial structure does not significantly improve Harbin’s traffic performance, and only the centers in peripheral areas indicate advantages in commuting speed and distance,to which the main reason is that the social and spatial factors reduce the importance of commuting costs, making long-distance commuting economically rational and hindering possible location reselection. It is an effective direction for the improvement of the traffic performance of polycentric spatial structure by facing up to the rationality of long-distance commuting and transportation demand, improving the location equilibrium of residential and employment resources, and constructing high-grade centers in peripheral areas in appropriate locations and with comprehensive functions. 展开更多

The exhaust emissions and frequent traffic incidents caused by traffic congestion have affected the operation and development of urban transport systems.Monitoring and accurately forecasting urban traffic operation is a critical task to formulate pertinent strategies to alleviate traffic congestion.Compared with traditional short-time traffic prediction, this study proposes a machine learning algorithm-based traffic forecasting model for daily-level peak hour traffic operation status prediction by using abundant historical data of urban traffic performance index(TPI).The study also constructed a multi-dimensional influencing factor set to further investigate the relationship between different factors on the quality of road network operation, including day of week, time period, public holiday, car usage restriction policy, special events, etc.Based on long-term historical TPI data, this research proposed a daily dimensional road network TPI prediction model by using an extreme gradient boosting algorithm(XGBoost). The model validation results show that the model prediction accuracy can reach higher than 90%.Compared with other prediction models, including Bayesian Ridge,Linear Regression,ElatsicNet,SVR,the XGBoost model has a better performance, and proves its superiority in large high-dimensional data sets. The daily dimensional prediction model proposed in this paper has an important application value for predicting traffic status and improving the operation quality of urban road networks. 展开更多

This paper examines the network impact caused by the start of an 18-month closure of the I-65/70 interchange (North Split), which usually serves approximately 214,000 vehicles per day in Indianapolis, IN. In anticipation of some proportion of the public diverting from official detour routes to local streets, a connected vehicle monitoring program was established to provide daily performances measures for over 100 intersections in the area without the need for vehicle sensing equipment. This study reports on 13 of the most impacted signals on an alternative arterial to identify locations and time of day where operations are most degraded, so that decision makers have quantitative information to make informed adjustments to the system. Individual vehicle movements at the studied locations are analyzed to estimate changes in volume, split failures, downstream blockage, arrivals on green, and travel times. Over 130,000 trajectories were analyzed in an 11-week period. Weekly afternoon peak period volumes increased by approximately 455%, split failures increased 3%, downstream blockage increased 10%, arrivals on green decreased 16%, and travel time increase 74%. The analysis performed in this paper will serve as a framework for any agency that wants to assess traffic signal performance at hundreds of locations with little or no existing sensing or communication infrastructure to prioritize tactical retiming and/or longer-term infrastructure investments.</span> 展开更多

The phenomenon of data explosion represents a severe challenge for the upcoming big data era. However, the current Internet architecture is insufficient for dealing with a huge amount of traffic owing to an increase in redundant content transmission and the end-point-based communication model.Information-centric networking(ICN)is a paradigm for the future Internet that can be utilized to resolve the data explosion problem. In this paper,we focus on content-centric networking(CCN),one of the key candidate ICN architectures.CCN has been studied in various network environments with the aim of relieving network and server burden, especially in name-based forwarding and in-network caching functionalities. This paper studies the effect of several caching strategies in the CCN domain from the perspective of network and server overhead. Thus,we comprehensively analyze the in-network caching performance of CCN under several popular cache replication methods(i.e.,cache placement). We evaluate the performance with respect to wellknown Internet traffic patterns that follow certain probabilistic distributions, such as the Zipf/Mandelbrot–Zipf distributions, and flashcrowds. For the experiments,we developed an OPNET-based CCN simulator with a realistic Internet-like topology. 展开更多

With the consideration of volume constraint of launch vehicle and trafficability of rover vehicle on lunar regolith terrain, a new design of radially deployable wheel is presented. For the purpose of achieving the meso-mechanics and dynamical behavior of lunar soil particles as well as macro-parameters of tractive performance for radially deployable wheel, the interaction between two types of wheel configurations and lunar soil particles is analyzed by means of discrete element method. The network of contact forces, the displacement vector chart, and the deformation of lunar soil beneath wheels are plotted. The equations of soil thrust, motion resistance, drawbar pull and driven torque are derived in granular scale based on the coordinates transformation and algebraic summation. The calculated results show that there is sufficient traction for both 6-split and 12-split radially deployable wheels with 304 mm outspread diameter to negotiate lunar regolith terrain specified here; the value of drawbar pull enhances with the increase of split number of radially deployable wheel, however, the required driven torque increases simultaneously, therefore, the tractive efficiency decreases. 展开更多

This study develops a differential variable speed limit(DVSL)which assigns different speed limits for car and truck, and varies speed limits based on traffic conditions. The proposed DVSL algorithm changes speed limits in real time based on truck percentage and occupancy immediately upstream of the ramp and the average speed of the control road sections upstream of the ramp.DVSL algorithm also considers spatial coordination of speeds, which gradually changes the speed limits in successive road sections upstream of the ramp when the severe congestion occurs. The study tested the impacts of DVSL and three other speed limit strategies on delay and safety for a section of the Gardiner Expressway in Toronto,Canada using the VISSIM traffic simulation model. The other strategies are 1)uniform speed limit(USL),2)differential speed limit for car and truck(DSL),and 3)USL&DSL(U&D)-i.e.,USL at low truck percentage and DSL at high truck percentage. It was found that DVSL showed the lowest delays for both car and truck among the four strategies. This is mainly because DVSL increased the spacing between vehicles in the right lane upstream of the on-ramp and facilitated vehicles’merging into the mainline freeway. It was also found that DVSL showed the lowest likelihood of rear-end crash between the lead and following vehicles among the four strategies. This study demonstrates that the proposed DVSL algorithm can better control car and truck speeds to reduce delay and improve safety of car-truck mixed traffic flow on freeways. 展开更多

The study of bottlenecks in urban traffic networks implies a challenge, since delays and queuing are implicit in interrupted flows. The objective of this paper is to discuss bottlenecks in urban traffic networks and present a methodology to identify them, based on GPS (Global Position System) data from taxis in Bogota Colombia. In networks, where stops are frequent, the principle we adopted deals with finding recurrent low-speed sections, beyond expected delays. Urban bottlenecks occur in those road network segments that perform poorly in terms of speed, compared with upstream and downstream conditions, producing recurrent and larger than normal delays. The GPS devices reported, via GPRS (General Packet Radio Service), information every 10 s. Results of this exploratory project are promising. The method allowed the identification of six urban bottlenecks out of seven randomly selected low-speed sections. The most valuable application of this methodology is the prioritization of resources investment in traffic infrastructure improvements. As a low cost option, this exploratory method might be especially attractive in identifying critical points in traffic networks in developing cities, without expensive traffic-monitoring systems. 展开更多

Signal retiming is a prominent way that transportation agencies use to fight congestion and change of traffic pattern.Performance evaluations of traffic conditions at signalized intersections and arterials provide actionable data for agencies to make well-informed and prioritized signal retiming decisions. However, the abundance of data sources, the lack of standardized evaluation methods and oftentimes the shortage of resources make it a difficult endeavor. The review detailed in this paper examines the advances made in traffic signal performance evaluation. We establish the necessity for the evaluations, study the process of continuous improvement of traffic signal performance using the evaluations, and then examine multiple methodologies in a plethora of research endeavors.Particularly,we focus on probe vehicles and sensors data, the two major sources of data.We discuss how sensors are connected to signal controllers to provide relevant in-depth traffic data including speed and occupancy measures. We also review the nature of probe vehicles and the level of penetration. We then define and summarize performance measures derived from both sources,to aid in performance evaluations. For performance evaluation methods,we discuss the research studies and provide summaries including advantages and disadvantages of the methods used,as well as a holistic outlook for future research. This paper is aimed to provide a comprehensive review on the state-of-the-art to benefit researcher, traffic agencies, and commercial entities that thrive to improve safety and efficiency of traffic signals through performance evaluations. 展开更多

Over the past few years, the Utah Department of Transportation has developed the signal performance metrics (SPMs) system to evaluate the performance of signalized in- tersections dynamically. This system currently provides data summaries for several per- formance measures, one of them being turning movement counts collected by microwave sensors. As this system became public, there was a need to evaluate the accuracy of the data placed on the SPMs. A large-scale data collection was carried out to meet this need. Vehicles in the Hi-resolution data from microwave sensors were matched with the vehicles by ground-truth volume count data. Matching vehicles from the microwave sensor data and the ground-truth data manually collected required significant effort, A spreadsheet- based data analysis procedure was developed to carry out the task. A mixed model analysis of variance was used to analyze the effects of the factors considered on turning volume count accuracy. The analysis found that approach volume level and number of approach lanes would have significant effect on the accuracy of turning volume counts but the location of the sensors did not significantly affect the accuracy of turning volume counts. In addition, it was found that the location of lanes in relation to the sensor did not significantly affect the accuracy of lane-by-lane volume counts. This indicated that accu- racy analysis could be performed by using total approach volumes without comparing specific turning counts, that is, left-turn, through and right-turn movements. In general, the accuracy of approach volume counts collected by microwave sensors were within the margin of error that traffic engineers could accept. The procedure taken to perform the analysis and a summary of accuracy of volume counts for the factor combinations considered are presented in this paper. 展开更多

Existing studies on modern roundabouts performance are mostly based on data fron: singe lane roundabouts that are not heavily congested. For planners and designers interested in building multilane roundabouts for intersections with potential growth i~ future traffic, there has been a lack of existing studies with field data that provide reference values in terms of capacity and delay measurements. With the intent of providing such reference values, a case study was conducted by using the East DowlinC Road Roundabouts in Anchorage, Alaska, which are currently operating with extensive queues during the evening peak hours. This research used multiple video camcorders t( capture vehicle turning movements at the roundabouts as well as the progressior~ of vehicle queues at the roundabout entrance approaches. With these video records, the number of vehicles in the queues can be accurately counted in any single minute during the peak hours. This study shows that unbalanced entrance flow patterns (i.e., ~ne entrance has significant higher flow than others) can intensify the queue and delay fo., the overall roundabouts. Then various software packages including RODEL, SIDRA and VISSIM were used to estimate several performance measurements, such as capacity. queue length, and delay, compared with the collected field data. With the comparison, it is found that all the three software packages overestimate multi-lane roundabout ca pacity before calibration. With default parameters, SIDRA and VISSIM tend to underes timate delays and queue lengths for the multi-lane roundabouts under congestion, while RODEL results in higher delay and queue length estimations at most of the entrance approaches. 展开更多
