Tree: Reducing the use of restrictive practices on psychiatric wards through virtual reality immersive technology training

BACKGROUND Restrictive practices(RPs)are defined by measures linked to physical and chemical restraints to reduce the movement or control behaviours during any emergency.Seclusion is an equal part of RPs intended to isolate and reduce the sensory stimulation to safeguard the patient and those within the vicinity.Using interventions by way of virtual reality(VR)could assist with reducing the need for RPs as it could help reduce anxiety or agitation by way of placing users into realistic and immersive environments.This could also aid staff to and change current RPs.AIM To assess the feasibility and effectiveness of using a VR platform to provide reduction in RP training.METHODS A randomised controlled feasibility study,accompanied by evaluations at 1 month and 6 months,was conducted within inpatient psychiatric wards at Southern Health National Health Service Foundation Trust,United Kingdom.Virti VR scenarios were used on VR headsets to provide training on reducing RPs in 3 inpatient psychiatric wards.Outcome measures included general self-efficacy scale,generalised anxiety disorder assessment 7(GAD-7),Burnout Assessment Tool 12,the Everyday Discrimination Scale,and the Compassionate Engagement and Action Scale.RESULTS Findings revealed statistically significant differences between the VR and treatment as usual groups,in the Everyday Discrimination Scale items Q8 and Q9:P=0.023 and P=0.040 respectively,indicating higher levels of perceived discrimination in the VR group.There were no significant differences between groups in terms of general self-efficacy,generalised anxiety disorder assessment 9,and Burnout Assessment Tool 12 scores.A significant difference was observed within the VR group for compassionate engagement from others(P=0.005)over time.Most respondents recorded System Usability Scale scores above 70,with an average score of 71.79.There was a significant reduction in rates of RPs in the VR group vs treatment as usual group with a fluctuating variability observed in the VR group likely due to external factors not captured in the study.CONCLUSION Ongoing advancement of VR technology enables the possibility of creating scenarios and simulations tailored to healthcare environments that empower staff by providing more comprehensive and effective training for handling situations.

Diminishing restrictive practices in psychiatric wards via virtual reality training:Old wine in a new bottle?

This editorial examines the application of virtual reality(VR)training to mitigate restrictive practices(RPs)within psychiatric facilities.RPs include physical restraints,seclusion,and chemical restraints,used to ensure patient safety but with varying usage rates across regions.In recent years,there has been a growing focus on the adverse effects of RPs on both healthcare workers and patients,leading to calls for its reduction.Previous research has shown the efficiency of VR training in RP reduction.This editorial will analyze the limitations of VR training in prior research aimed at reducing RP,emphasizing that the essence of RPs is a medical safety issue,calling for careful differentiation of the causes of RPs,and avoiding the use of AR technology as a"new bottle"for"old wine"to improve the quality and reproducibility of future research in this field.

Research and Practice of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Training Programs

In today’s society, the incidence of cardiopulmonary diseases is increasing annually, seriously affecting patients’ quality of life. Therefore, developing a scientific and effective rehabilitation training program is of great significance. This study first analyzes the theoretical basis of cardiopulmonary rehabilitation training, including the effects of aerobic exercise, interval training, and strength training on cardiopulmonary function. Based on this, a comprehensive rehabilitation training program is designed, which includes personalized training plans, comprehensive interventions, multidisciplinary collaboration, patient education, and regular follow-up visits. The cardiopulmonary rehabilitation training plan developed in this study has certain scientific practicability, which provides a theoretical basis for cardiopulmonary rehabilitation training, and also provides a reference for medical institutions, rehabilitation centers and communities, which is helpful for promotion and application to a wider range of patients with cardiopulmonary diseases.

Exploration and Practice of Integrating Ideological and Political Education into the“Comprehensive Practical Training in Prefabricated Building Construction”Course

This paper focuses on the ideological and political construction of the course“Comprehensive Practical Training of Prefabricated Building Construction”and deeply discusses its exploration and practice process.By building an ideological and political teaching system in line with the characteristics of“Comprehensive Training of Prefabricated Building Construction,”ideological and political elements such as industry spirit,professional ethics,and social responsibility are organically integrated into all links of practical training and teaching.In terms of teaching methods,various innovative means such as case analysis,role-playing,and group discussion are adopted,and modern information technologies such as virtual reality and augmented reality are used to improve the teaching effect.At the same time,a diversified teaching evaluation system is formulated to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of ideological and political education.This study not only enriches the theoretical research of ideological and political courses but also provides a practical reference for the ideological and political construction of similar courses,which is of great significance for promoting the overall improvement of the quality of talent training in higher education.

Exploration of the Integration of Curriculum Ideology and Politics into the Educational Pathway of Standardized Training for General Practice Residents

In recent years,the national higher education reform has proposed the concept of curriculum ideological and political education as a major element.This integration into the standardized training of general practice residents(commonly referred to as general resident training)is an unavoidable trend in the teaching field.Based on the actual situation of our unit at The First Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Medical University,this paper emphasizes the necessity of incorporating ideological and political education into the general resident training curriculum,despite the absence of pertinent practical experience in how to effectively incorporate such courses into comprehensive residential training.In our hospital,we must assess the ideological and political education in the curriculum of general resident training,proposing a scientific,reasonable ideological and political education concept system for general practice courses,integrating ideological and political education with general practice resident training,and strengthening the team of ideological and political education physicians to teach them to carry out such education,this would foster enthusiasm and initiative.Strengthening admission education and training for general practice resident training,as well as regularly hosting symposiums to share ideas and understand the mission of doctors can provide effective experience for ideological and political education in general resident training courses.

The Role of Secondary School Teacher Training in Their Teaching Practices-A Secondary Publication

This work aims to analyze the effect exerted by the initial and continuous training of secondary school teachers in France on their teaching practices.For this,we carried out a secondary analysis of data from the TALIS survey(Teaching and Learning International Survey),conducted in 2013 in 34 countries,including France.In particular,we focus on practices related to the teaching methods used,classroom management,how to communicate,and the evaluative practices of teachers.In support of binary logistic regression models,we showed that the variables related to initial training play a weak role,and even exert a negative effect on certain pedagogic practices,leading to a reflection on the renovation of this training.On the other hand,our analyses highlighted the greater weight played by certain continuing education actions.

History Teacher Training from Decolonial Curriculum Practices to Combat Racism at UniProjeção in the Federal District-A Secondary Publication

This article aims to understand the training process of history undergraduates,to see if there are decolonial curricular practices to combat racism at the Centro Universitário e Faculdade Projeção(UniProjeção)in the Federal District,to understand how coloniality has corroborated the exclusion of different epistemologies and the erasure of different cultures,and how this exclusionary process of coloniality interferes in the training of history teachers.In order to combat this practice,we are looking for alternatives that can break these suppressions carried out by Europeans.In this way,we turn to decolonial ideas that aim to break with the logic of coloniality.We can conclude that these practices are poorly developed in the institution,so we proposed active problem-based methodology and music as a didactic resource.As playful educational tools that strengthen the teaching-learning process,they are active agents in the decolonial work of combating racism,and it is essential to train responsible and ethical teachers in the fight against racism and any form of oppression.

Evaluation of the McGill‐Tongji Blended Education Program for Teacher Leaders in General Practice:The importance of partnership and contextualization in International Primary Care Training Initiatives

Purpose:Strong primary health care(PHC)systems require well‐established PHC education systems to enhance the skills of general practitioners(GPs).However,the literature on the experiences of international collaboration in primary care education in low‐and middle‐income countries remains limited.The purpose of this study was to evaluate the implementation and perceived impact of the McGill‐Tongji Blended Education Program for Teacher Leaders in General Practice(referred to as the“Tongji Program”).Methods:In 2020–2021,the McGill Department of Family Medicine(Montreal,Canada)and Tongji University School of Medicine(TUSM,Shanghai,China)jointly implemented the Tongji Program in Shanghai,China to improve the teaching capacity of PHC teachers.We conducted an exploratory longitudinal case study with a mixed methods design for the evaluation.Quantitative(QUAN)data was collected through questionnaire surveys and qualitative(QUAL)data was collected through focus group discussions.Results:The evaluation showed that learners in Tongji Program were primarily female GPs(21/22,95%)with less than 4 years of experience in teaching(16/22,73%).This program was considered a successful learning experience by most participants(19/22,86%)with higher order learning tasks such as critical thinking and problem‐solving.They also agreed that this program helped them feel more prepared to teach(21/22,95%),and developed a positive attitude toward primary care(21/22,95%).The QUAL interview revealed that both the Tongji and McGill organizers noted that TUSM showed strong leadership in organization,education,and coordination.Both students and teachers agreed that by adapting training content into contextualized delivery formats and settings,the Tongji Program successfully overcame language and technology barriers.Conclusions:Committed partnerships and contextualization were key to the success of the Tongji Program.Future research should focus on how international primary care education programs affect learners'behavior in their practice settings,and explore barriers and facilitators to change.

Practice patterns among ophthalmic surgeons in treating concomitant oculoplastic conditions in preoperative period:A questionnaire-based study

BACKGROUND Addressing oculoplastic conditions in the preoperative period ensures both the safety and functional success of any ophthalmic procedure.Some oculoplastic conditions,like nasolacrimal duct obstruction,have been extensively studied,whereas others,like eyelid malposition and thyroid eye disease,have received minimal or no research.AIM To investigate the current practice patterns among ophthalmologists while treating concomitant oculoplastic conditions before any subspecialty ophthalmic intervention.METHODS A cross-sectional survey was disseminated among ophthalmologists all over India.The survey included questions related to pre-operative evaluation,anaesthetic and surgical techniques preferred,post-operative care,the use of adjunctive therapies,and patient follow-up patterns.RESULTS A total of 180 ophthalmologists responded to the survey.Most practitioners(89%)felt that the ROPLAS test was sufficient during pre-operative evaluation before any subspecialty surgery was advised.The most common surgical techniques employed were lacrimal drainage procedures(Dacryocystorhinostomy)(63.3%),eyelid malposition repair(36.9%),and ptosis repair(58.7%).Post-operatively,47.7%of respondents emphasized that at least a 4-week gap should be maintained after lacrimal drainage procedures and eyelid surgeries.Sixty-seven percent of ophthalmologists felt that topical anaesthetic procedures should be preferred while performing ocular surgeries in thyroid eye disease patients.CONCLUSION Approximately 50%of ophthalmologists handle prevalent oculoplastic issues themselves,seeking the expertise of an oculoplastic surgeon under particular conditions.Many ophthalmologists still favor using ROPLAS as a preliminary screening method before proceeding with cataract surgery.Eyelid conditions and thyroid eye disease are not as commonly addressed before subspecialty procedures compared to issues like nasolacrimal duct obstruction and periocular infections.

Importance of etiologies of secondary diabetes:How often do we think off in clinical practice?

Machine learning applications in healthcare clinical practice and research

Machine learning(ML)is a type of artificial intelligence that assists computers in the acquisition of knowledge through data analysis,thus creating machines that can complete tasks otherwise requiring human intelligence.Among its various applications,it has proven groundbreaking in healthcare as well,both in clinical practice and research.In this editorial,we succinctly introduce ML applications and present a study,featured in the latest issue of the World Journal of Clinical Cases.The authors of this study conducted an analysis using both multiple linear regression(MLR)and ML methods to investigate the significant factors that may impact the estimated glomerular filtration rate in healthy women with and without non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD).Their results implicated age as the most important determining factor in both groups,followed by lactic dehydrogenase,uric acid,forced expiratory volume in one second,and albumin.In addition,for the NAFLD-group,the 5th and 6th most important impact factors were thyroid-stimulating hormone and systolic blood pressure,as compared to plasma calcium and body fat for the NAFLD+group.However,the study's distinctive contribution lies in its adoption of ML methodologies,showcasing their superiority over traditional statistical approaches(herein MLR),thereby highlighting the potential of ML to represent an invaluable advanced adjunct tool in clinical practice and research.

2024 National Practical Technical Training on Textile Printing and Dyeing Auxiliary Preparation Succeeds

From July 16th to 19th,2024,2024 National Practical Technical Training on Textile Printing and Dyeing Auxiliary Preparation,organized by China Research Institute of Daily Chemical and National Engineering Research Center for Surfactants,and co-organized by the Dyeing and Finishing Technology Research Institute of Zhejiang Fashion Institute of Technology and the High Fastness Plant-based Dye Research Base of China Textile Engineering Society,was held successfully in Shangyu,Zhejiang Province,with 92 representatives from 64 work units from all over China.

Exploration and Application of the Flipped Classroom Based on Outcome-Oriented Educational Principles in Vocational Nursing Practical Training

Purpose:To explore the practical effects of using the flipped classroom approach based on outcome-oriented educational concepts in nursing practical training at vocational colleges.Methods:From February 2023 to February 2024,a total of 62 nursing trainees from our school were sampled and randomly divided into a study group and a control group using a randomized controlled trial design,with 31 students in each group.The control group received conventional training,while the study group received practical training based on the outcome-oriented educational concept in flipped classrooms.Comparison was made between the two groups on assessment scores,teaching satisfaction,and self-directed learning ability ratings.Results:Statistical comparisons showed that the study group’s assessment scores,teaching satisfaction,and self-directed learning ability ratings were significantly higher than those of the control group(P<0.05).Conclusion:The flipped classroom model based on outcome-oriented educational concepts in nursing practical training at vocational colleges can improve students’assessment scores and self-directed learning abilities,and enhance teaching satisfaction,demonstrating potential for wider application and dissemination.

A Study on the Work Process-Based Practical Training Model for Basic Nursing Skills in Vocational Colleges

Objective:To explore and analyze the work process-based practical training teaching model for basic nursing skills in vocational colleges and its implementation effects.Methods:A total of 82 nursing students from our school were selected for the study,which was conducted from April 2023 to April 2024.Using a random number table method,the students were divided into an observation group and a control group,each with 41 students.The control group received conventional practical training teaching,while the observation group followed the work process-based practical training model for basic nursing skills.The assessment scores and teaching satisfaction of the two groups were compared.Results:The comparison of assessment scores showed that the observation group performed significantly better than the control group(P<0.05).The comparison of teaching satisfaction also indicated that the observation group had significantly higher satisfaction than the control group(P<0.05).Conclusion:The work process-based practical training teaching model for basic nursing skills in vocational colleges can improve students’assessment scores and enhance teaching satisfaction,demonstrating its value for wider application.

Theory and practice for assessing structural integrity and dynamical integrity of high-speed trains

Purpose–The safety and reliability of high-speed trains rely on the structural integrity of their components and the dynamic performance of the entire vehicle system.This paper aims to define and substantiate the assessment of the structural integrity and dynamical integrity of high-speed trains in both theory and practice.The key principles and approacheswill be proposed,and their applications to high-speed trains in Chinawill be presented.Design/methodology/approach–First,the structural integrity and dynamical integrity of high-speed trains are defined,and their relationship is introduced.Then,the principles for assessing the structural integrity of structural and dynamical components are presented and practical examples of gearboxes and dampers are provided.Finally,the principles and approaches for assessing the dynamical integrity of highspeed trains are presented and a novel operational assessment method is further presented.Findings–Vehicle system dynamics is the core of the proposed framework that provides the loads and vibrations on train components and the dynamic performance of the entire vehicle system.For assessing the structural integrity of structural components,an open-loop analysis considering both normal and abnormal vehicle conditions is needed.For assessing the structural integrity of dynamical components,a closed-loop analysis involving the influence of wear and degradation on vehicle system dynamics is needed.The analysis of vehicle system dynamics should follow the principles of complete objects,conditions and indices.Numerical,experimental and operational approaches should be combined to achieve effective assessments.Originality/value–The practical applications demonstrate that assessing the structural integrity and dynamical integrity of high-speed trains can support better control of critical defects,better lifespan management of train components and better maintenance decision-making for high-speed trains.

Research on the Application of the OSCE Model in Vocational Nursing Comprehensive Practical Training

The objective of this study is to examine the application effect of the Objective Structured Clinical Examination(OSCE)model in the comprehensive practical training course for higher vocational nursing.Based on the evaluation dimensions of core nursing competencies,the OSCE framework was constructed with the clinical nursing work process as the main focus and supported by a nursing case database.A questionnaire survey revealed that over 80%of students in the experimental group were satisfied with the application of OSCE in the nursing comprehensive practical training course,and more than 90%believed that OSCE assessment enhanced their theoretical knowledge and practical skills.The OSCE was also considered helpful in transforming learned knowledge and skills into professional competencies.

The eligibility criteria,training content,and scope of practice for prescriptive authority for midwives:a modified Delphi study

Objective:To investigate the necessary eligibility criteria for prescriptive authority for midwives,gather suggestions from experts on training content for prescriptive authority for midwives,and explore the scope of practice of their prescriptive authority in certain circumstances.The results of this study could serve as a reference for the development of policies on prescriptive authority for midwives.Methods:Based on a literature search and semistructured interviews,a modified Delphi method was first used to conduct 2 rounds of expert consultation on eligibility criteria and training content for prescriptive authority for midwives.This stage included nursing experts(20)and medical experts(16)engaged in midwifery in many tertiary Grade A hospitals in China.Subsequently,consultation on the scope of practice of prescriptive authority for midwives was conducted with nursing experts(18)and medical experts(14)engaged in midwifery in many tertiary Grade A hospitals in China.The suggestions from the experts were analyzed using statistical methods to confirm the eligibility criteria for prescriptive authority,training content,circumstances,scope of practice for prescriptive authority,and the prescription forms.Results:Among the consulted experts,70.59%(the highest acceptance rate)considered an undergraduate degree to be the minimum educational requirement for midwives to be eligible for prescriptive authority,85.29%(the highest acceptance rate)considered the supervisor nurse to be the minimum technical position experience necessary for midwives to be eligible for having prescriptive authority,and 50%(the highest acceptance rate)considered 5 years to be the minimum number of years of experience in the specialty for midwives to be eligible for prescriptive authority.The applicants should at least be practicing at Grade C hospitals,which was the consensus among 91.18%of the consulted experts.Among the consulted experts,100%,100%,97.06%,94.12%,and 94.12%agreed that the applicants should have knowledge in pharmacology,laws and ethics,nursing,diagnostics,and midwifery,respectively.The consulted experts confirmed 22 related course topics and identified 6 specific circumstances in which the midwives could partially practice prescriptive authority,including uterine atony,excessive uterine contraction,postpartum hemorrhage,premature rupture of fetal membranes,normal labor,and neonatal asphyxia.Under these 6 circumstances,the consulted experts commonly agreed that there were 20 medication prescriptions and 13 auxiliary examination prescriptions that could be prescribed by midwives.Of these prescriptions,51.5%were independent prescriptions,30.3%were protocol prescriptions,and the remaining 18.2%were both independent and protocol prescriptions.Conclusions:Midwives who have an undergraduate degree,supervisor nurse position,and 5 years of practice in Grade C hospitals are considered eligible to apply for prescriptive authority.Partial prescriptive authority could be granted after regulated training in fundamental theories and practices,which could improve the independence and professionalism of midwifery.

Nurses’ Knowledge, Practice, and Confidence after the Training Program on Wound Care at the Agriculture General Hospital in Vietnam

Aims: Wound care is the basic technique in patient care which has direct effects on treatment outcome. However, the Agriculture General Hospital (AGH), Vietnam, has never organized a continuing professional development (CPD) training program based on Vietnam’s Basic Nursing Competency Standards (VNBNCS) for their nurses. This study aimed to examine the knowledge, practice, and confidence level among nurses at the AGH after 12 months of implementing a VNBNCS-based wound care training program. Methodology: This descriptive and comparative study assessed the changes in knowledge, practice, and confidence scores of 43 nurses at five clinical departments before and 12 months after the training program (April 2018 to June 2019). Data were collected using a self-administrated knowledge questionnaire with 48 items, a 13-item confidence checklist, and a 16-item skills checklist. EpiData 3.1 and SPSS 18.0 were used to enter and analyze data, respectively. Results: The mean scores of knowledge (113.70 ± 14.75 vs. 129.7 ± 19.6), and practice (63.21 ± 19.99 vs. 132.07 ± 4.31) statistically significantly increased 12 months after training (p < 0.001). The mean score of confidence in performing wound care increased in all of the 13 aspects (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Nurses’ wound care-related knowledge, practice, and confidence have improved 12 months after training. This demonstrates the VNBNCS-based wound care training program developed by Viet Duc University Hospital is suitable for use in the AGH and has achieved its promising initial outcomes. This program should be duplicated in other health facilities.

The Reform Scheme of Practice-Courses Cooperation Training Pattern of Software Engineering Major of Overseas Chinese Universities

How to improve the employment of software engineering graduates, especially, how to effectively enhance the employment competitiveness of relevant overseas students in the context of "One Belt and One Road" is one of the core tasks of overseas Chinese universities. This paper proposes a reform plan for the practical training mode of school-enterprise cooperative project in the software engineering of overseas Chinese universities. The reform plan combines education concepts with practical research and development. It subdivides students and according to the characteristics of different types of students, and is carried out on campus, outside campus(in the province), and abroad(original area), which makes senior undergraduates fully understand the needs of enterprises, constantly improve their professional practice ability, and improve their competitiveness. Thus, the professional innovation and entrepreneurship ability of students is enhanced, and it also reduces the cost of employee entry.
