Transculturation expresses an effective way to introduce various cultures to the outside. By analyzing the interaction of cultural globalization and cultural localization in the movie Kung Fu Panda (2008), the paper illustrates the transculturating process of two cultures. Furthermore, the paper also points out that transculturation, differing from cultural assimilation and cultural imperialism, can enhance the equal communications of different cultures and improve the cultural comprehension, which is important in intercultural communication 展开更多

The Diary of A Madman (Kuangren r/j/), Lu Xun's first well-known short stoW and the alleged first modem short stow in vernacular Chinese, is famous for its first-person narrative by an intellectual that is suffering from a persecution complex. As acknowledged by Lu Xun himself and argued by most scholars, this short stoW was influenced by Gogol's homonymic short stow, but has developed more profound melancholy and indignation. However, as my paper demonstrates, this perspective neglects the role of Japan as an intermediary in the transculturation of madness. First, Lu Xun's initial encounter with Gogol's Diary of A Madman was through his reading of Futabatei Shimei's translation in the Japanese magazine Ky6mi. Second, the framed narrative and contrasting styles of Lu Xun's short stow, which are not features of Gogol's, might also be due to the inspiration from the Japanese genbun itchi movement in the Meiji period. Third, and most importantly, cannibalism, a major theme in Lu Xun's Diary of A Madman, was arguably shaped by the heated discussion in Japan on national character and cannibalism. My paper will trace the double origin of the depiction of madness and cannibalism in Lu Xun's work and illustrate the importance of the role of Japan in the transculturation of the stow of a madman. 展开更多

Objective:The study objective was to translate, validate, and test the reliability of the original kidney disease and quality of life-36(KDQOL-36^(TM))instruments in Odia.Materials and Methods:A cross-sectional design with a purposive sampling technique was used.According to RAND Corporation guidelines, initially, the items of the KDQOL-36^(TM)questionnaires were translated into Odia by two independent, bilingual, professional translators, and then back-translated to English, followed by tryout and field testing. The experts validated the KDQOL-36^(TM)instrument review committee for review related to kidney health conditions. The tool was implemented among 180 patients undergoing“maintenance”hemodialysis. The following tests evaluated reliability and validity:test-retest reliability with Cronbach’s alpha correlation(stability),(reliability)internal consistency, and contents validity index. Results:The Cronbach’s alpha value and intraclass correlation coefficient(ICC)score of all five domains, namely“physical component summary, mental component summary(MCS),the burden of kidney disease, symptoms and problems of kidney disease, and effects of kidney disease”of both KDQOL-36^(TM)English and Odia(KDQOL-36-E^(TM)and KDQOL-36-O^(TM))version,recommended excellent homogeneity.A high positive correlation(r=0.998)was found between the Odia version of KDQOL-36^(TM)and the English version KDQOL-36^(TM)questionnaire.The ICC score ranges from 0.889 to 0.997 at a 95%confidence interval for test-retest reliability, and Cronbach’s alpha was 0.832.Conclusion:This study explores the Odia version of KDQOL-36^(TM)psychometric properties, depicted at an acceptable level of internal consistency. The KDQOL-36-O^(TM)instrument is a valid and reliable tool for assessing the kidney disease-related quality of life in Odia-speaking hemodialysis patients. 展开更多

Purpose: This study assessed the effectiveness of three teaching methods for developing cultural competency based upon Leininger's theoretical framework with nursing students in China: case studies, traditional didactic learning, and self-directed learning. These methods were used in tran- scultural nursing teaching practices to identify the method that resulted in the greatest improve- ments in the nursing student's understanding and clinical application of transcultural nursing. Methods: The Transcultural Nursing Questionnaire(TNQ) was used for pre-and post-test comparisons of all participants in four areas of cultural knowledge and the Evaluation of Transcultural Nursing Competency(ETNC) was applied via role-play to evaluate the cultural competency of 120 of the 305 participants from three general hospitals in the PuDong New District, Shanghai, China. Individual transcultural nursing courses that focused on case study, traditional didactic or self-di- rected methods persisted for four months in three hospitals. Results: Statistical analyses of the cognitive scores of the participants in the transcultural nursing courses revealed a significant difference(P〈0.01) between scores collected before and after the teaching with the three methods. Comparisons of the three hospitals revealed that the scores for transcultural nursing cognition and simulating service assessment were significantly different(P〈0.01) for the case study nursing students. The scores of the students who were taught with the traditional didactic and self-directed methods were not significantly different across the three hospitals(P〉0.05). Conclusion: The results revealed that the case study, traditional didactic and self-directed method effectively improved the transcultural nursing cognitive levels of the nursing students. The case study method appeared to be the most effective approach based upon the TNQ pre-and post-tests and the ETNC cultural competency scores. 展开更多

The term transnational originated in the historical field when, in the late 1990s, lan Tyrrell wrote a seminal essay entitled "What is Transnational History?" and changed the course of the academic discipline, claiming that studying the history of a nation from inside its borders was outmoded because the study of history concerns the movements of peoples, ideas, technologies, and institutions across national boundaries. The study of cross-national influences and the focus on the relationship between nation and factors beyond the nation spilled over into many other fields, especially into cinematic studies. Today transnational refers to the impossibility of assigning a fixed national identity to much cinema, to the dissolution of any stable connection between film's place of production and the nationality of its makers and performers. Because there is a lot of critical debate about what constitutes national and transnational cinema, the study of international remakes is a promising method to map the field with some accuracy. This essay will analyze the journey from Hammett's novel to Kurosawa's film and then to Leone's western, and will demonstrate how the process of adaptation functions and what happens to a "text" when it becomes tmnsnational and polysemic. Because Leone is the creator of the Italian western, the one who initiated the cycle that was copied many times over for a decade, we must look at A Fistful of Dollars as a prototype, a movie that when dissected can shed light on the national-transnational dichotomy of the spaghetti western. However, before studying the prototype, we must look at the complex history of the origin of the first spaghetti western, taking into account that A Fistful of Dollars was "transcoded" by Leone from Kurosawa's Yojimbo (1961) that derived his script from Dashiell Hammett's RedHarvest (1929). 展开更多

Objective: To compare(i) the evidence-based practice(EBP) profiles and(ii) socio-demographic characteristics of nurses in 4 selected low-middle income countries(LMICs).Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 677 nurses from 4 hospitals in 4 countries(Afghanistan, Ghana, Iran, and Uganda). Results: The findings revealed that there are significant differences between the 3 EBP subscales(that is, practice/use, attitude, and knowledge/skill) across the 4 countries(P < 0.05). No significant EBP differences were identified across age groups and gender in the subscales of practice, knowledge, and attitude. Practice and knowledge subscales were significantly associated with working schedules(that is, par t-time and full-time)(P < 0.05). Analyses also revealed significant differences between attitude and knowledge subscales and working experience(P < 0.05).Conclusions: Nurses in the 4 countries have moderate practice, attitude, and knowledge/skil s of EBP. Nurses in LMICs require continuous professional development programs and suppor t to enhance their practice and knowledge regarding EBP in clinical settings. 展开更多

The paper investigates the literary connections between nineteenth-century American poet Emily Dickinson(1830-1886)and Yang Mu(1940-2020),an award-winning Taiwan Residents poet.As a fellow admirer of the Romantic poet John Keats like Dickinson,Yang Mu showed great enthusiasm for Dickinson, expressing his passion for her in a post modernist poem“September 27th's Emily Dickinson”in the early 1970s.Dickinson also sought literary guidance at the inception of her poetic career, writing to the then editor of The Atlantic Monthly Thomas W.Higginson, after reading his“Letter to a Young Contributor”in April 1862.Their works inform a shared investment between the two writers in their Keatsian aesthetics, concerns about poetic fame, and experimentation with poetic forms during times of surging national cultural sentiments.Recent scholarships by critics like Cristanne Miller,Roland Hagenbichle,Paraic Finnerty,Paul Giles and Domhnall Mitchell, among many oth-ers,have placed Dickinson's poetry squarely in a global context. In a similar vein, critics like Lawrence R.Smith,Michelle Yeh,Stephen Owen,Anthony C.Yu,and Lisa Lai-ming Wong also perceive Yang Mu as a world poet who practices bicul-turalism by blending eastern and western cultures.Building upon previous scholar-ships,the paper examines how Yang Mu plays a role of not only an admirer and a fellow poet, but also a surrogate mentor in“September 27th's Emily Dickinson”,replacing Higginson's editorial advice for and“surgical”treatment of Dickinson.Reversely,Dickinson's poem“There's a certain Slant of light”(1862)illuminates how Yang Mu's translation of this poem of Dickinson in The Completion of a Poem(1989)and his later four poems“Rays of the Searching sun”(1996)transplant Dick-inson's latc-Romantic,proto-modernist poetic quest onto his own post-Romantic,postmodern poetics. This East-West literary resonance demonstrated in these poems reveals the“cosmopolitan”potentiality embraced by both poets, shedding light on the significance of placing the transmission, circulation and evolution of poetic dialogues in a transcultural context. 展开更多

The Treatment of Other Cultures in Transcultural Writing-A Cognitive Semiotic Reflection 被引量:1

But, i... Transcultural literary studies as advocated by Italo-Australian critic Arianna Dagnino claims to investigate writers who live transnational lives and write out of a border-crossing and transcendent sensibility. But, in arguing for indeterminacy and fuzziness in transcultural novels, it fails to explain how specifically different cultures should be dealt with in this type of writing. In this essay, I draw on Per Aage Brandt's cognitive semiotic definition of cultural "sedimentation" as opposed to Raymond Williams' "analysis of culture" to help with a close reading of two Australian travel novels of the 20 th century, i.e. Margaret Jones' The Confucius Enigma and Nicholas Jose's Avenue of Eternal Peace, with special attention to how the two books handle Chinese culture. Such a reading reveals that, while both novels are set in China, the former remains satisfied with minimum cultural representation, and the latter mainly focuses on certain areas of contemporary Chinese culture instead of others. Although Avenue of Eternal Peace does dig beyond the "iconic meanings" of the Chinese culture to reveal authorial knowledge of its "symbolic meanings", the novel devotes too much of itself to the overwhelmingly "negative semiosis" of China, refl ecting a complacent attitude on the part of the protagonist/narrator/author towards Chinese culture. For this reason, neither novel meets Dagnino's criteria for transcultural writing. And the two novels start us thinking about Dagnino's theorization of transcultural writing because her emphasis on "transcending" only implies an aloofness and detachment. Brandt's defi nition of culture as sedimented symbolic meanings teaches us that genuine transcultural writers should perhaps be prepared not just to know and understand and stay at a distance from other cultures but to engage and heartily share and even partake of their sedimented symbolic meanings at all levels and learn to feel the same way about them as their native members. This is true of the third world diasporic/migrant writers living and writing in the fi rst and second worlds that Dagnino's theory of transcultural writing remains focused on, but even more of the fi rst and second worlds writing about their transcultural experiences in the third world countries. I argue that part of the intention ofDagnino's transcultural literary studies is to move beyond postcolonialism's concern over cultural unevenness and asymmetry, but this study proves that postcolonialism is not and should not be taken as completely over. 展开更多

Despite the differences in cultural, economic, and political systems,China and Australia are societies sharing rapidly urbanizing futures. This presents significant challenges for urban planning, placemaking, and the sustainability of livable urban communities.Using Chongqing as a case study, metaPLACE is an experimental project investigating how participatory urban media(large and small interactive screens, installations,fa?ades, and devices)can act as a co-designed interface between diverse communities, industries, and government stakeholders. The empirical data collected in this study is derived from a co-design workshop held in Chongqing in 2019 to explore how urban media can assist urban planners to design more livable urban places. The data indicates that there are a range of opportunities and concerns related to equitable placemaking, environment, the nature of interfaces and participation, ownership and management of data, large and small screens, and cultural and generational considerations. Our critical and comparative analysis of the research methods and cultural factors influencing the co-design process reveal deficiencies in widely accepted models of user experience design and design process used across industry and design research. This has significant implications for transcultural and interdisciplinary co-design and the establishment of a viable Sino-Australian design ecosystem. 展开更多

The paper argues that a change of the name from multiculturalism to transculturalism will not work magic if the thinking paradigm that dictates trans- culturalism is still the same mindset that dictates multiculturalism, which is basi- cally swayed by postcolonialism, a victim mentality, or what Fanon termed as a colonized mind that conceives the world ahistorically in terms of a false binarism of the West and the non-West, ignoring entirely the complexities of power relations in intercultural and intracultural interactions, and disregarding the simple facts that, as the West is not a colonizing whole, the non-West is not a colonized monolith and that, as there are diversities between cultures in the West and the non-West, there are differences within the Western cultures, within the non-Western cultures, and within each culture. I discuss the failures of multiculturalism, critique the indiscriminate application of postcolonialism, and look into the problems and risks of conceiving power relations in cross-cultural interactions along the postcolonialist binary line, which has reduced the diversified world into the West and the non-West. The transculturalist hypothesis of World Englishes is used as a case in point. My conclusion is that transculturalism can only be meaningful if it adopts "a disposition of openness, liberated from the colonized mind or the postcolonialist identity politics. 展开更多

Nicholas Jose has been advocating "transcultural writing" for more than three decades, with Avenue of Eternal Peace(1989) as an early part of his practice. In 1990, Avenue was short-listed for the Miles Franklin Prize but failed to win this Australian national award. Judged by Chinese semiotician Zhao Yiheng's reception model of narratives, this is a "message blocked" case. Using the framework of Roman Jakobson's communication model, this paper reinterprets the six constitutive factors and functions to investigate the elements that blocked the message. My main argument is that "contact", "context", and "code" jointly blocked the communication; the three Cs reflect three long-standing problems in Australian literature: the issue of cultural identity, the dark side of White Australian Dream, and the Orientalist representation of "the other" culture. The failure in literary communication analyzed also suggests that Wally's perception of China follows a Saussurean dichotomy which presupposes a closed linguistic system and excludes the role of the subject and the extra-semiotic object in signification. The Peircean trichotomy better captures the process of concept formation and is a better approach to transcultural writing in the contemporary postmodern situation. Transcultural writing challenges its readers; we need to transcend our confined nationality and persistent prejudice, and develop adequate "transnational literacy" to appreciate this new form of cultural production. 展开更多

This study examines critical essays and imaginative fiction by three key writers of the Republican period: Mao Dun, Ba Jin and Lu Yin. I argue that, while Mao Dun and Ba Jin fuse elements of classical Chinese and modem Western sources so as to create strong heroines and a critique of "new men" for the purpose of revolutionary cultural and national reform, Lu Yin foregrounds an inward examination of the self, multiple narrative points of view and a dialogical perspective which fuses her protagonists' interior consciousness with external reality as well as other characters' streams of feeling and thought. My reading of Lu Yin's texts reveals that she not only succeeds in bringing communion and solace to her readers but also creates "moments of being," markedly similar to Virginia Woolf's modernist aesthetics and Walter Benjamin's mosaic-like "moments of recognition," which allow her characters to perceive "wholeness" from fragmentary flashes of understanding. These intense moments of awareness enhance Lu Yin's dialogic imagination and enable her to create discursive feminine narratives that convey the full complexity of women's consciousness while simultaneously resisting the male realist literary discourse and strengthening her feminist-activist agenda in the national public sphere. 展开更多
