Coupled with the kinetic modeling, thermodynamic calculations were carried out to determine the γ/α phase equilibrium conditions using a para-equilibrium (PE) model. The dissipation of free energy for γ→α phase transformation due to the so-called solute drag effect (SDE) was taken into account in the thermodynamic modeling. With this modeling, simulations on the growth kinetics of ferrite in the steels containing austenite-stabilizing and ferrite-stabilizing elements (such as Ni, Mn and Si, Cr, respectively) were performed, which indicates that it deviates from the parabolic growth rate law after the initial stage of transformation. The results were compared with the experimental values given by Bradley and Aaronson, showing that this model has a reasonably good accuracy to predict the growth kinetics of ferrite.展开更多

Taking Fe-C alloy as an example, the model was used to simulate the evolution of the micro-morphology of the liquid-solid phase transition, and the effects of temperature, solute and free energy on the nucleation of pearlite after the liquid-solid phase transition were analyzed. The micro-morphology of pearlite was simulated. The simulation results show that the austenite structure has hereditary effect on the pearlite, the morphology of pearlite structure was similar to that of the parent austenite. The eutectoid structure at the front of pearlite grows toward the interior of austenite grains in a bifurcation manner and in the spherical coronal shape. In addition, the growth rate of pearlite was related to the shape of concave-convex interface at the nucleation site, and the growth rate at the convex interface was faster than that at the concave interface.展开更多

In this study, the interactions between the fluid and the plug module of the isolation tool were investigated. Simulations of the plug process and particle image velocimetry measurements were performed to study the flow characteristics. Numerical solutions for the continuity, momentum, and energy equations were obtained by using commercial software based on finite-volume techniques. Box–Behnken design was applied, and response surface methodology(RSM)-based CFD simulation analysis was conducted. The dynamic model in the plug process was built by RSM and used to evaluate the influences of the main mechanical parameters on the pressure during the plug process. The diameter of the isolation tool and the diameter of the plug module have strong influences on the process, and the length of the isolation tool has only a little influence on the plug process.展开更多

It reduces the phase speed over prediction of both Hedges′ modified relation and Kirby and Dalrymple′s modified relation in the region of 1< kh <1 5 for small wave steepness and maintains the monotonicity in phase speed variation for large wave steepness. And it has a simple form. By use of the new nonlinear dispersion relation along with the mild slope equation taking into account weak nonlinearity, a mathematical model of wave transformation is developed and applied to laboratory data. The results show that the model with the new dispersion relation can predict wave transformation over complicated bathymetry satisfactorily.展开更多

Because the RSW has the character of energy concentration and quick cooling rate, the microstructure transformation of the base metal can be confined in the least limit. The material properties and the welding parameters have significant effects on the quality of the nugget. To predict the microstracture evolution in the melted zone and the heat-affected zone, an electrical, thermal, metallurgical and mechanical coupled finite element model is described and applied to simulate the welding process of the 6082 aluminum alloy. Experimental tests are also carried out. The comparison between experimental and numerical results shows that the adopted model is effective enough to well interpret and predict some important phenomena in ierms of the phase transformation in spot welding of 6082 aluminum alloy.展开更多

However, the great size difference between the film's thickness and its planar dimensions makes it difficult to study the thin film performance numerically. In this work, a scaling transformation was presented to make the different dimensional sizes equivalent, and thereby, to improve the grid quality considerably. Two numerical experiments were studied to validate the present scaling transformation method. The numerical results indicated that the largest grid size difference can be decreased to one to two orders of magnitude by using the present scaling transformation, and the memory required by the numerical simulation, i.e., the total grid number, could be reduced by about two to three orders of magnitude, while the numerical accuracies with and without this scaling transformation were nearly the same.展开更多

By means of the operator, the differential equation is transferred to a more explicit algebraic form which is much easier than the numerical integration of nonlinear TPBVP derived from Pantryagin's maximum principle method.
