The coupling simulation was performed in a fluid and solid domains under three different fouling conditions: fouling inside the tube, fouling outside the tube, and fouling inside the shell. The flow field, temperature, and pressure distributions in the heat exchanger were solved numerically to analyze the heat transfer performance parameters, such as thermal resistance. It is found that the pressure drop of the heat exchanger and the thermal resistance of the tube wall increase by nearly 30% and 20%, respectively, when the relative fouling thickness reaches 10%. The fouling inside the tube has more impact on the heat transfer performance of the heat exchanger, and the fouling inside the shell has less impact.展开更多

Junction temperature and thermal resistance are the critical parameters that determine the thermal management and reliability in electronics cooling. Metal oxide field effect transistor(MOSFET)is an important semiconductor device for light emitting diode-integrated circuit(LED IC) driver application, and thermal management in MOSFET is a major challenge. In this study, investigations on thermal performance of MOSFET are performed for evaluating the junction temperature and thermal resistance. Suitable modifications in FR4 substrates are proposed by introducing thermal vias and copper layer coating to improve the thermal performance of MOSFET. Experiments are conducted using thermal transient tester(T3ster) at 2.0 A input current and ambient temperature varying from25℃ to 75℃. The thermal parameters are measured for three proposed designs: FR4 with circular thermal vias, FR4 with single strip of copper layer and embedded vias, and FR4 with I-shaped copper layer, and compared with that of plain FR4 substrate. From the experimental results, FR4I-shaped shows promising results by 33.71% reduction in junction temperature and 54.19% reduction in thermal resistance. For elevated temperature, the relative increases in junction temperature and thermal resistance are lower for FR4I-shaped than those for other substrates considered. The introduction of thermal vias and copper layer plays a significant role in thermal performance.展开更多

A simulation program was developed to evaluate the temperature histories of the heat transfer fluid (HTF) and the phase change material at any axial location during the charging period. The results of the model were validated by comparison with experimental results of temperature profiles of HTF and PCM. The model was also used to investigate the effect of porosity, Stanton number, Stefan number and Peclet number on CTES system performance. The results showed that increase in porosity contributes to a higher rate of energy storage. However, for a given geometry and heat transfer coefficient, the mass of PCM charged in the unit decreases as the increase in porosity. We applied a new analysis method for the steam state equation to analyze the molar quantity change in steam over the course of the experiment and determined the transient steam variation. We also investigated the influence of flow rates and temperatures ofcooling water on the efficiency ofsteam condensation. Our experimental results show that appropriate increasing of the cooling water flow rate can significantly accelerate the steam condensation. We achieved a rapid increase in the total volumetric heat transfer coefficient by increasing the flow rate of cooling water, which indicated a higher thermal convection between the steam and the cooling water with higher flow rates. We found that the temperature ofcooling water did not play an important role on steam condensation. This method was confirmed to be effective for rapid recovering ofsteam.展开更多

A numerical model has been established based on the enthalpy method to analyze the phase change heat transfer process under convective boundary conditions. Phase change is not an isothermal process, but one that occurs at a range of temperature. The total melting time of the material is very sensitive to the surrounding temperature. When the temperature of the surroundings decreases 8 degrees, the total melting time increases 1.8 times. But variations in surrounding temperature have little effect on the initial temperature of phase change, and the slope of the temperature time history curve remains the same. However, the temperature at which phase change is completed decreases significantly. Our research shows that the phase change process is also affected by container size, boundary conditions, and the power source's cross sectional area. Materials stored in 3 cylindrical containers with a diameter of 38ram needed the shortest phase change time. Our conclusions should be helpful in effective design of underwater glider power systems.展开更多

The problem was solved for two main cases. In the first case, heat generation was assumed variable by fin temperature for a solid fin and in second heat generation varied with temperature for a porous fin. Results are presented for the temperature distribution for a range of values of parameters appearing in the mathematical formulation(e.g. N, εG, and G). Results reveal that DTM is very effective and convenient. Also, it is found that this method can achieve more suitable results in comparison to numerical methods.展开更多

The optimum filling ratio in terms of minimum startup power and minimum thermal resistance was 50% for DI water and 40% for methanol. The minimum thermal resistances for DI water and methanol were observed at vertical orientation. The evaporator side heat transfer coefficient for water was slightly more, while the condenser side heat transfer coefficient was appreciably more than that of methanol. Studies were also conducted for start-up time and temperature at different orientations and it was found that the PHP charged with methanol worked efficiently at all orientations.展开更多

Under forced convection by a hot/cold air and flow over a cooled/heated flat plate, the thermal boundary layer and its thickness are quantitatively visualized and measured using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. In addition, the variation in the local heat transfer coefficient is evaluated experimentally with respect to the air flow velocity and temperature. Differences within the heat transfer performance between the plates are confirmed and discussed. As a result, the average heat transfer performance is about the same for the heated plate and the cooled plate under all air velocity conditions. This contrasts with the theoretical prediction in the case of low air velocity, the reason considered was that the buoyancy at the 30° leading edge blocked air from flowing across the surface of the plate.展开更多

Our conclusions should be helpful in effective design of underwater glider power systems.
文摘A simple and highly accurate semi-analytical method, called the differential transformation method(DTM), was used for solving the nonlinear temperature distribution equation in solid and porous longitudinal fin with temperature dependent internal heat generation. Also, it is found that this method can achieve more suitable results in comparison to numerical methods.
文摘The effect of working fluid on the start-up and thermal performance in terms of thermal resistance and heat transfer coefficient of a pulsating heat pipe have been studied in the present paper. Methanol and de-ionized water has been selected as the working fluid. The minimum startup power for DI water was obtained at 50% filling ratio and for methanol at 40%. Studies were also conducted for start-up time and temperature at different orientations and it was found that the PHP charged with methanol worked efficiently at all orientations.
文摘This study focuses on the experimental measurements of the heat transfer coefficient over a flat plate with a 30° leading edge. This contrasts with the theoretical prediction in the case of low air velocity, the reason considered was that the buoyancy at the 30° leading edge blocked air from flowing across the surface of the plate.
文摘Heat pipes are most frequently used for thermal management solutions.Selection of right type of heat pipe for a specific scenario is utmost necessary for best outcomes. The purpose of this research is comparison of thermal performance characteristics of sintered copper wicked and grooved heat pipes, which are mostly used types of heat pipes.Distilled water filled heat pipes were tested through experimentation in gravity assisted position.Experimental outcomes have been compiled in terms of capillary pressure, operating temperature, thermal resistance and heat transfer coefficient.Capillary pressure is high in sintered heat pipes compared to grooved heat pipes irrespective of groove dimensions.Grooved heat pipes have lower operating temperature compared to sintered heat pipes at the same heat load.At 8 W,compared to sintered heat pipes, grooved heat pipes have 8.24% lower condenser surface temperature,4.41% lower evaporator surface temperature and 7.79% lower saturation temperature.Thermal resistance of sintered heat pipe is much lower than grooved heat pipe. The maximum relative difference of 63.8% was observed at 8 W.Heat transfer coefficient of sintered heat pipe was observed double compared to grooved heat pipe at 8 W heat load.Thermal resistance and hence heat transfer coefficient of sintered heat pipe change almost in a linear manner with respect to heat load but unexpectedly turning point is observed in thermal resistance and heat transfer coefficient of grooved heat pipe.Grooved heat pipes attain equilibrium much earlier compared to sintered ones.Varying heat loads from 4 to 20 W causes variation in equilibrium establishment time from 7 to 4 min for grooved and from 10 to 7 min for sintered heat pipes.
文摘From resolution of two-dimensional equation of heat in dynamic frequency regime, we have plotted evolution curves of temperature according to depth of material or in lateral direction. They will allow us to evaluate thermal behavior of towed material. Aim of study is to use fibers as a thermal insulating material by proposing a method for determining effective thermal insulation layer in dynamic frequency regime.
